BIG-TIME FUN WITH A SMALL TOWN FEEL Don’t miss the East Otter Tail County Fair July 24-27 PERHAM FOCUS STAFF REPORT The rides, the food, the games, the animals, the shows, the exhibits, the excitement – the fair has it all. Plan to bring the whole family out to the East Otter Tail County Fair on Thursday through Sunday, July 24-27, in Perham. Some of this year’s main attractions will include an Elvis impersonator, tractor parade, chainsaw carving, magic show, demo derby and performances by The Haining Family, 60 Cycle Hum, and a six-piece Mexican Conjunto Band called Los Diamantes. There will also be exhibits by popular Minnesota photographer and public speaker Doug Ohman on display at various times throughout the day on Friday. As always, the midway will be lit up with thrilling rides and carnival games for all ages, as well as food vendors to satisfy any craving. The Children’s Barn will be full of animals for the kids to see and pet, and the exhibit buildings will be packed with artwork, handmade blankets and clothes, canned goods, homegrown flowers and edibles, and much more. FFA and 4-H livestock shows will be ongoing throughout the fair. Open Class and Scarecrow Contest registration will take place on the Tuesday and Wednesday prior to the fair. Special deals and days will include Military and Veterans Day on Thursday (Thursday also offers the only “wristband night,” from 6-10 p.m.), Senior Citizen’s Day on Friday, Kid’s Day on Saturday, and Family Day on Sunday. There is no entry fee to get into the fair, and most events are free to attend (other than events at the grandstand, such as the tractor pull and demo derby). The cost to park on the grounds is $2 per car. 4 | SUMMER SCENE JULY 2014

The East Otter Tail County Fair, in Perham, has been bringing people together for food and fun for more than a century.

THURSDAY Activities kick off Thursday with animal weigh-ins and a rabbit show in the morning. The Children’s Barn will open at 10 a.m., with the exhibit buildings following at 11 a.m. Also at 11 a.m., there will be a flag raising ceremony by area VFWs and Boy Scout troops. Starting at 1 p.m. and lasting until 7 p.m. will be a tractor show. All types, makes and models will be featured. Awards will be given out for people’s choice and judge’s choice. More animal shows and an Iron Will Expedition will go on through the afternoon. The carnival will open at 5 p.m. At 6 p.m., have a good laugh at cow pie bingo. An hour later, at 7 p.m., test out your talents at open mic night, or watch the tractor parade. Traditional bingo will be ongoing from 7-11 p.m.

Los Diamantes will play from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. at the free stage in the park. Bean bag and beer pong games will be available in the beer garden during this time. FRIDAY A 4-H swine show will start things off Friday at 8 a.m., followed by a county fair scavenger hunt from 9:30-11:30 a.m. The Children’s Barn will again open at 10 a.m., with the exhibit buildings opening one hour later. At 11:30 a.m., chainsaw artist Curtis Ingvolstad will give a demonstration in the park. He will give two more on Friday, at 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The carnival will open at 1 p.m., at which time senior citizen’s events will take place in the park. Doug Ohman will present “Escape to the Lake: Cabins of Minnesota” in the main exhibit building.

Magician Tom Anderson will entertain for Kids’ Day at the fair, on Saturday, July 26. He’ll give two shows in the park, at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Bingo will be offered from 2-4 p.m., immediately followed by a tractor pull (including antique tractors). At 5 p.m., Ohman will present “Just Down the Road: Historic Churches of Minnesota.” Elvis fans will love Friday evening’s entertainment: An Elvis tribute artist, followed by Elvis impersonator Brad Boice. Boice started his Elvis tribute show in 2005, almost by mistake. He was attending a musical impersonator show with his wife and friends, when his friends convinced him to have a go at it. He took the stage, singing “Can’t Help Falling in

Love,” and the crowd couldn’t help but fall in love with his performance. Since then, Boice has entertained thousands of people across the U.S., from his home in Minnesota to Las Vegas and many points in between. He has also been a featured performer on both Royal Caribbean and Carnival Cruise lines. He will perform at the fair at 6:30 p.m. True Elvis fans will want to arrive an hour early to catch a special tribute show. At 7 p.m., Ohman will give his final presentation at the fair, “Heart of the Farm: Barns of Minnesota.” A modified tractor pull will also begin at 7, and bingo

Elvis fans won’t want to miss impersonator Brad Boice. He’ll perform in the park on Friday, July 25 at 6:30 p.m.

Animals are always a popular draw for fair-goers.

Animal shows go on throughout the fair, including the too-cute Little Britches Sheep Show, pictured.

Exhibit buildings showcase the skills of area contributors. Artwork, clothing, flowers, jams and jellies are just a few examples of the numerous pieces that will be on display throughout the fair. Exhibit buildings open daily at 11 a.m.

will go from 7-11 p.m. Closing out the evening will be a performance by 60 Cycle Hum at the beer garden. Beer pong and bean bag games will be available. SATURDAY There’s a long list of things for families to do on Saturday. Before the carnival opens at noon, kids can enjoy a horse show at the horse arena, starting at 8 a.m. The Children’s Barn will once again open at 10 a.m., and will remain open until 10 p.m. Chainsaw artist Curtis Ingvolstad will give a demonstration at 11 a.m., which is also when the exhibit buildings will open. At noon, the carnival will open and performers with the Minneapolis-based Theatre of Fools will entertain. The Little Britches Sheep Show will take place at 3 p.m., with other small and large animal round robins also going on in the afternoon. Magician Tom Anderson will entertain families in the park at 4 p.m., followed by a state-sanctioned kids’ tractor pull at 5 p.m. Anderson will give a second show at 7 p.m. Curtis Ingvolstad will give his final 6 | SUMMER SCENE JULY 2014

chainsaw art demonstration for the fair at 5:30 p.m. Bingo will be ongoing from 7-11 p.m. The always popular demo derby will begin at 7 p.m., while 60 Cycle Hum returns for a second night to perform on the free stage in the park from 8:30 p.m. - 12:30 a.m. SUNDAY On the fair’s final day, a free-will offering pancake breakfast will be served from 8 a.m. to noon. The carnival will open at 1 p.m. A cowboy church service will take place in the park at 10 a.m. The Children’s Barn will also open at that time, with the exhibit buildings opening one hour later. A Dairy Recognition Program will begin at 12:30 p.m. From 1-3 p.m., The Haining Family will offer their special brand of “frontporch family-style music” in the park. This six-piece family band plays Christcentered, family-building music, often in the bluegrass style. Bingo will be ongoing from 2-5 p.m. Events will conclude with a Century Farm Awards Program at 3:30 p.m., and a 4-H Awards Program at 4 p.m.

For more information about the East Otter Tail County Fair, visit www.eotcountyfair.org or pick up a copy of this year’s Fair Book.

The Children’s Barn at the fair, open daily at 10 a.m., is always a big hit with kids, who love to see and pet animals like baby chicks, piglets, puppies, llamas, rabbits and more.

‘UNDER THE BIG TOP’ Circus-themed Dent Daze offers the perfect opportunity to clown around KIOWA WIESER-MATTHEWS KWMATTHEWS@PERHAMFOCUS.COM Dent’s big summer celebration is right around the corner, and this year it promises to bring people “Under the Big Top.” How? By featuring some fun, circus-based activities like buggy rides, bouncy houses, parades and face painting. It’ll also offer some circus-based food and refreshments. Events kick off at 10 a.m. with a poker run. Players must run to different participating businesses around Dent. Each business will hand out one card to a player. Once a player has a full hand, he or she can turn it in for prizes. The top three hands will receive gift certificates to local restaurants.

Kids love to get their faces painted at Dent Daze.

Back again after proving popular at last year’s Dent Daze will be bed races. Here’s how they work: teams of six people race a bed on wheels down the street and back, with four people pushing and steering while the other two ride on the bed. Those two must do a quick change of clothes half-way through the race. The first team back, wins. Teams can “soup up” their own beds to bring, or there will be a hospital bed available for teams to use, according to Jess O’Boyle of the Dent Community Club. The club is organizing Dent Daze. Each team pays a $5 entry fee to compete; that money is then pooled together into a pot that will get split amongst the top two winning teams. In other racing action, the always-popular tractor/big wheel races will be back at Dent Daze again this year. Open to kids ages three and up, all who participate get a ribbon, and winners are awarded trophies. Families can bring their own child-sized tractors, or one will be provided for kids to use. “It’s just really fun,” said O’Boyle of the tractor races. “It’s fun to watch, and it’s very popular.” Adults can sign up for a 5K walk/run. O’Boyle said this event has grown in recent years, and organizers expect a good turnout. “The 5K has become quite popular,” she said. “It’s a nice, flat course.” Some other favorite activities that will be returning this year include a parade, chicken feed and pie social, and silent auction. The chicken feed is put on by the Dent Lions Club, while the Methodist Church leads up the pie social. Both events are fundraisers. The silent auction is coordinated by the Dent American Legion, and funds raised go back to the community in the form of scholarships. These events offer “amazing food and great value, supDENT DAZE TO 14 Tractors and big wheel races for kids are always a favorite activity at Dent Daze. Every child gets a ribbon for participating, and winners are awarded trophies.

RELAY FOR LIFE IS “ARMED WITH HOPE, TO FINISH THE FIGHT” ELIZABETH HUWE EHUWE@PERHAMFOCUS.COM For the 19th year, teams will don purple, walk all night and make their mark on the fight against cancer. The East Otter Tail County Relay for Life will be held Friday, July 11 at the Perham High School track. At the 2013 relay, teams raised upwards of $70,000 for the American Cancer Society to promote research, education, advocacy and patient services. This year, their goal is to reach at least $90,000. “We’ve been about there the last few years,” said Lisa Peterson, the event’s chairperson. “It should be a realistic goal, but it will make us stretch a little bit.” For many participants, the relay lasts longer than just the one night. It all begins on July 5, with “Paint the Town Purple.” Businesses across Perham will decorate with purple to support cancer awareness and remind patrons of the upcoming relay. Volunteers will also decorate the downtown area throughout the week. On Monday, July 7, Relay Week will continue at Wild Oaks restaurant with the Survivor’s Dinner. The meal is free to all cancer survivors as well as anyone who has been recently diagnosed or is un-

dergoing treatment. Caregivers and the public are also invited to the event, for the cost of the dinner. A social hour will begin at 5:30 p.m., with dinner served at 6:30. Introduction of the honorary co-chairpersons, awards and a speaker will also be part of the dinner’s program. Tuesday, July 8 will be Bank Night. Team captains will bring the money they have collected thus far and announce their in-progress totals. Finally, on Friday, the relay itself will take place. Activities will begin at 5:30 p.m. with classic car rides, haircuts, chair massages, concessions and more. All funds raised through these offerings will go directly to the relay. There will also be a silent auction that will include a “discovery flight” from Wings Flight Training ($105 value) and an evening in the Twin Cities, complete with a private flight from Perham to Minneapolis, limo transportation, a night at Marriott City Center and dinner at Murray’s Steakhouse ($1,300 value). New this year will be a kids’ table of auction items and baskets. Many team campsites also have their own food and game offerings, said Peterson. “There’s a lot of fun stuff,” said Peterson. “It’s a night for all ages.” “One thing that will be new this year are ‘Team Challenges’ that will take place at random times,” said Peterson. “One team can challenge another, and the team that challenges or refuses a challenge

At each Relay for Life, an unbroken string of luminaries surrounds both sides of the Perham High School track, commemorating family members who have battled, or are battling, cancer.

has to ‘pay.’ Challenges will be announced over the microphone. It could get very competitive and very fun!” An opening ceremony will begin at 7 p.m. All other activities will pause in order to honor cancer survivors as they take the first lap of the night. Names of the survivors will be read as the group makes its way around the track. It will be at this time when the honorary relay co-chairs will speak. After the ceremony, activities will resume until the luminary ceremony at 9:15 p.m. Luminaries can be purchased in advance or the night of the relay and be dedicated to a loved one who has fought cancer. The Fight Back Ceremony, which focuses on education and advocacy, will be at 10:30 p.m. Teams will continue to walk and compete in activities throughout the night until the closing ceremony at 6 a.m. on Saturday. Call Lisa Peterson at 346-4747 or visit www.relayforlife.org/ottertaileastmn with questions or for more information. Survivors who did not receive an invitation to the dinner can get on the list by contacting Ruth or LeRoy Wegscheid at 218-367-2571.

Relay for Life Honorary Co-Chairs Linda Hendrickson, left, and Kathy Wouters, right, were greeted by hundreds of cheering spectators as they led the ‘Survivors Lap’ at the 2013 relay in Perham.

FISHING FOR SOME SUMMER FUN? New York Mills Summer Celebration, Lund Mania Fishing Tournament offer something for everyone KIOWA WIESER-MATTHEWS KWMATTHEWS@PERHAMFOCUS.COM New York Mills will host its annual Summer Celebration, complete with games, races, a parade and more, on Friday, July 11. Once again, the popular Lund Mania Fishing Tournament will coincide with the celebration, with winners announced Friday. The popular “Boatville Drags” will be back for a third summer due to popular demand. The drags are a race between miniature-sized Lund boats, scaled down and made to be pedaled down the street. The drags will be held outside City Hall from 4:30-5:30 p.m. Participants will be racing their boats for a chance to win a traveling trophy. Several other events are planned throughout the day, including a Free Swim Day at the Legried Community Pool from 1-5 p.m., kids’ games behind the New York Mills Regional Cultural Center from 1 p.m. onward, a petting zoo with free pony rides from 2-5 p.m., and a parade at 7 p.m. Last year’s parade had more than 100 floats, and previous parades have included numerous local bands. After the parade, the evening will conclude with a street dance featuring 60 Cycle Hum, a band from the Fargo, N.D., area. The street dance will have a $5 cover, but all other events will be free to the public. LUND MANIA TO 22 The Summer Celebration goes hand-in-hand with Lund Boats’ annual Lund Mania Fishing Tournament. Winners typically receive a Lund boat and trailer worth more than $20,000.
