Anne Sawyer-Aitch is providing artistic direction in this year’s Puppet Pageant. This is Anne’s 4th year with the Pageant. Opportunities abound for creative people of all sorts to help produce and/or participate in the annual large scale Puppet Pageant. As has been the case since 2011, this original play is drawn from the Finnish national epic poem, the Kalevala. The Pageant brings a major thread of the cultural heritage of the region into a contemporary drama each year. In 2013, that story included a Lund boat, 8-feet-tall stiltwalking Star Bears, and a hero mouse who saved the day. This year’s Puppet Pageant will be held Friday, August 15th, immediately following the annual Mills Corn Feed, at approximately 7:00pm. Thanks to the NYM Civic and Commerce Association for their generous financial support of the annual Pageant. A LITTLE BIT VINTAGE, A WHOLE LOT OF COUNTRY Pioneer Fest is back and under new management A little bit vintage and a lot of country describes this year’s Pioneer Fest, coming up on Saturday, Aug. 16, from 11 a.m. to midnight at Pioneer Park in Perham. Now under new management by the History, Arts and Cultural Association of East Otter Tail County, the festival is being revived and refreshed with input from the public. The popular evening concert and dance established in years past will continue this year. The lineup will feature the headlining Dan Brekke Band. Brekke, a young rising star featured at Jasper’s Theatre in Park Rapids, is a stomping good time, rousing crowds with his lively version of “Orange Blossom Special.” Oakland After Hours, by Jeff Oakland of New York Mills will open the evening. Other musical guests will entertain when the indoor/outdoor beer garden opens at the Grandview Ballroom at 5 p.m. Daytime activities between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. will include a tractor pull and antique tractor show, classic cars and a vintage and antique doll sale, bake sale and beer stand. Families are invited to bring their dogs along during the day to explore the 25-acre park and have a picnic. “Fun, free activities, especially those where you can bring your dog, are getting hard to find,” said Darla Ellingson, CEO of the History, Arts and Cultural Association. “We’ll have free outdoor games like bean bags and Frisbee; you can bring a picnic, or buy

lunch here.” The Lakes Country Mountaineers will be having their annual rendezvous campout next door, and guests of Pioneer Fest are welcome to view black powder shooting demonstrations throughout the day. “Many people have asked about our rumored antique doll sale,” said Ellingson. “It will take place inside the café building starting at 11 a.m. Everything is priced to sell below our researched value, so collectors will want to come early. Bargain hunters – check later in the day for additional discounts.” Outside alcohol is not allowed in the park. Dogs should be kept on a leash and away from tractors, and owners will be expected to clean up after them. Dogs are not allowed in buildings, on black powder shooting grounds or in the evening beer garden. There will be stations where participants can give input on future festivals and activities at Pioneer Park. With community input, organizers hope Pioneer

BLAST FROM THE PAST

Area man has impressive horse-drawn carriage collection LINA BELAR FOR THE FOCUS Clark Anderson has an amazing collection of horse-drawn carriages. It’s an unusual hobby in this day and age, but there were a couple of unique influences in Anderson’s early years that contributed to his lifelong interest. Next door to where he grew up in North Dakota, there was a U.S. Calvary remount station. It had been established after WWI, a war that took millions of horses to wage. Even in WWII, horses were used, and the remount station was an attempt to keep a good breeding stock of horses available, should they be needed again in war. This station housed three stallions, who were available to farmers for free. There was no obligation on the part of the Calvary to buy the colts, but if it

became necessary, they could be assured that the colts would be of a high quality. By 1951, the need for horses had been pretty much eliminated in warfare, but they still hadn’t dismantled the remount station. The other influence on Anderson was the many rock piles in the countryside filled with discarded pieces of buggies and wagons. At that time, buggies had so little value that it was common practice to burn them just to reclaim the metal. Anderson went to high school in Williston, N.D. There was no bussing, but the family had a buggy that had been partially restored. Anderson bought himself his first carriage when he was still a sophomore. On his way home from school, he used to stop at Erv’s Market. One day there was a semi-truck parked there, loaded with carriages that were going to Hollywood,

where they would be used in the making of popular movies about the West. Anderson talked to the driver and, with his meager savings, he bought a buggy and two cutters. The driver also had a road coach modeled after an English mail coach, but for that he wanted $700. Anderson went home and tried to borrow the money from his mother. Although that didn’t work, he wasn’t discouraged – he still had the buggy and two cutters. He sold one right away and started using the other. In the 1960s, carriages were very cheap. Anderson thinks he probably paid $25 for the buggy and $20 apiece for the cutters. Eventually, demand outstripped the supply, and prices began to soar. Things slowed a bit during the 2008 financial crisis, people started hauling them to auction houses, and prices started falling again. Today, people are showing a renewed interest and, like most antiques, the more valuable pieces are always in demand. Anderson now has dozens of working carriages. He inherited about half of them from a great aunt in Sweden whose father was a horseman in the

1920s. She had never married and she kept her father’s carriages, which were quite fancy, in a nearly empty barn. Over the years, other neighbors brought their carriages to her because she had the room, and eventually she ended up with about 50 carriages. After Anderson graduated from high school, his grandmother made it possible for him to go to the home farm in Sweden to meet the old folks. He says it was the single best thing that ever happened to him. When his aunt died, she left her small farm to the cemetery, her money to another cousin and, to Anderson, she gave her fine china and her carriages. Anderson moved the carriages to another cousin’s barn and spent the next 20 years trying to figure out how to get them to the United States. He finally brought them over by boat in 2008. He has now given some of them to his 14-year-old daughter, who is also showing an interest in horse and carriage riding. What it is like to ride in a horse and carriage? In the 1800s, it wasn’t very comfortable unless you were fairly rich and could afford one with protection from the weather. Even then, the ride was rather bumpy. The Amish buggy that is often seen on the road today is a simple utilitarian carriage of the kind that would have been used by everybody 100 years ago. It could be made comfortable in bad

weather by being totally enclosed. The buggy was never pretentious but had a simplicity of design that is still appealing. In about 1910, carriage makers were beginning to get competition from the automobile industry and started developing new styles. As the auto age progressed, the differences between the English and what we know as the Amish buggy, widened. Eventually, the auto-

mobile replaced the carriage entirely as a mode of transportation. Today, there are several active driving clubs in the Twin Cities in which a wide range of carriages can be seen. There are also about a dozen draft horse clubs, the closest being in Clarissa and Detroit Lakes, Minn. Carriage clubs host eight or nine events during the year, and members can join for a nominal fee. There is still something special about driving a horse and carriage. Boaters would compare it to sailing rather than using a motor boat. For one thing, there’s the quietness of it. And there’s that symbiotic relationship between horse and driver. Anderson said it’s a particular feeling that exists whether one is driving down a country road or in an Olympic driving competition. Anderson is an organic dairy farmer with a herd of Milking Shorthorns in central Minnesota, near Sebeka. He travels 175 miles to attend the monthly meetings of the St. Croix Horse and Carriage Society, and rarely misses. He also attends most of their monthly drives. He does not have a permanent display of his own carriages but does welcome visitors with an interest in them. For an appointment, call 218-4020134.

THE PLACE WHERE ST. URHO WAS (POSSIBLY) BURIED Celebrate Finnish culture at the Finn Creek Folk Festival ERIC HENDRICKX EHENDRICKX@ PERHAMFOCUS.COM It all started around 40 years ago when an old Finnish farmstead was donated in hopes of being preserved for years to come. That donated land is the center piece for what is now the location of the annual Finn Creek Folk Festival. On the land today is the original

farmhouse, along with other historical buildings. Those buildings have been donated by local communities in order to enhance the Finn Creek experience. There is also a replica built chapel and store on the land, made to resemble how each would look in the late 1800s. This summer marks a special anniversary at the festival, as 2014 is celebrated as the 150th year of Finnish culture in America. The Finn Creek Folk Festival was

selected as a regional outreach festival dedicated to the preservation of Finnish culture and celebration of a strong Finnish presence in the U.S. Legend has it that St. Urho (a Finnish Saint famous for driving off the grasshoppers and saving a grape crop) actually visited the area, fell ill, and, once deceased, chose to be buried at Finn Creek because he claimed the water would flow straight back to his homeland of Finland. Even those who don’t fully believe in that St. Urho tale will no doubt enjoy themselves at the Finn Creek Folk Festival, slated for Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 23- 24. The festival lineup ensures a great time with food, entertainment, culture and a bit of Finnish history. Saturday will kick off with a pancake breakfast at 7:30 a.m., with many activities to follow. The festival’s afternoon attractions will include both a garden tractor and ATV pull, scheduled to begin at noon. Musical performances will be plentiful at the Finn Creek Festival, with Saturday featuring the Saana Ensemble, a vocal group performing Finnish music, sometimes with percussion and other instruments. Also on Saturday will be the

The antique tractor pull is always a popular event at Finn Creek Folk Festival. There will also be live entertainment, a petting zoo, a kids’ tractor pull, sawmill and blacksmith demonstrations and more.

The Finn Creek Folk Festival is held on an old Finnish farmstead that was donated about 40 years ago. Since then, other historical buildings have been brought to the property. The land is home to the Finn Creek Open Air Museum, which celebrates Finnish culture. The New York Mills area is known for its strong Finnish heritage.

well-known squeezebox player Kip Peltoniemi. He is described as the last of the old-time button accordion players from the Finnish Triangle. This one-man show is said to feature accordion instrumentals, humorous songs, dubious folklore, tall tales and all-out lies. Sunday won’t be slacking on entertainment, either. The day will be highlighted by an antique tractor pull at 1 p.m., and the musical lineup will feature an abundance of performances. The Northern Lights Gospel Quartet will serenade the crowd through their gospel music, incorporating popular do-wop and barbershop arrangements. In addition to this quartet will be Ameriikan Poijat, a brass septet that has been appearing all over the U.S. at local festivals, regional tours and music conferences. In a mixture of both Finnish and American traditions, Dianne Jarvi will be performing songs as she plays the Kantele (Finnish folk harp) guitar. In addition to the events taking

place on either day, there will be plenty of activities happening throughout the duration of the festival. From 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., both days, there will be concessions with hot food choices for purchase as well as Finnish treats, homemade pies and homemade ice cream. The kids will have plenty of chances for fun. They can get acquainted with some furry friends as the petting zoo will be back again this year. Led by Shell Tumberg, the petting zoo will feature small ponies, goats, pigs, baby chickens and rabbits for the children to enjoy. A kids’ tractor pull, sponsored by the Wadena County FFA, is also scheduled for Saturday afternoon. On display during the festival will be selections from a unique Jeep collection, including a military Jeep, farm Jeep and recreational Jeep. As always, both the sawmill and the blacksmith shop on the grounds will be up and running. Fans will be able to see the sawmill in operation, and the blacksmith will be bending and forging

metals, just as was the norm 150 years ago. Look for the official Finn Creek Folk Festival posters soon to be released showing exact times for each event at this year’s festival. When the festival is not going on, the property is home to the Finn Creek Open Air Museum. The museum has regular hours during which volunteers are on the grounds and people are welcome to explore the area and visit the museum and gift shop. These hours are from 1-5 p.m. Thursday through Sunday, Memorial Day until Labor Day. The museum and festival are located three miles east of New York Mills, off Highway 106. Guests don’t have to be of Finnish descent to enjoy what this festival has to offer. The food, tractors, music and activities make the Finn Creek Folk Festival a ‘must’ for anyone looking to enjoy an outdoors August weekend in Minnesota.

A COMMUNITY CARNIVAL EVENT New York Mills’ Corn Feed and Puppet Pageant KIOWA WIESER-MATTHEWS KWMATTHEWS@ PERHAMFOCUS.COM The New York Mills Corn Feed and Puppet Pageant is back for another year of crowd-pleasing eats and giant puppets in the street. Sponsored by the town’s Civic and Commerce Association, the corn feed and puppet pageant will take place on Friday, Aug. 15. The event is organized by the New York Mills Regional Cultural Center and is free and open to all ages. “It’s a longstanding community event,” said Jamie Robertson, director of the cultural center. “It’s a time when the community businesses give back, and there’s free corn on the cob and rides for kids, and games, and people set up booths in central park.” The corn feed will be held from 4-7 p.m. in Central Park. At 7 p.m., the puppet pageant will begin in the back of the cultural center. The pageant is a relatively recent addition to the event. According to Robertson, the pageant started roughly six years ago and is put on by visiting artist Anne Sawyer-Aitch. Sawyer-Aitch spends two weeks before the pageant in a residency program at the cultural center, where she preps for the pageant and creates the larger-than-life puppets. The public is encouraged to participate in this process. “The community welcomes young and old to join in advance for the two week workshop to make puppets,” Robertson said. The workshop commenced on Monday, Aug. 4 and will continue until the day of the pageant on Aug. 15. 20 | SUMMER SCENE AUGUST 2014

The corn feed will be held from 4-7 p.m. in Central Park in New York Mills on Friday, Aug. 15.

The puppet pageant involves a number of community members, especially children, who perform in the streets downtown.

The show will be inspired by the Finnish national epic poem, Kalevala. According to Robertson, “the story will be adapted to contemporary times, putting a twist on the classic story.” In addition to the corn feed and puppet pageant, the New York Mills Fire Department will be having a car wash, free swimming will be offered at the city pool, and a performance by the band Curtis and Loretta will take place behind the cultural center following the pageant. “It’s just kind of a community carnival event,” Robertson said. The larger-than-life puppet pageant is a performance based on the Finnish national epic poem, Kalevala.
