Balloon Artistry Saturday, July 25 • 10:00 am - 10:45 AM Mandana Moshrefzadeh has been making balloon art for over 15 years. She is one of the best balloon twisters in the Twin Cities area! She also has a degree in Early Childhood Education, and an Elementary (K-6) teaching license. She excels at engaging and entertaining children, youth, and adults with her combination of dazzling balloon sculptures, great sense of humor, and fun personality! Her journey in balloon art began when her oldest son got a balloon kit for his birthday about 15 years ago, and during cleaning out his closet a month later, she noticed that he had not even opened it yet, so she decided to try it. Well, she went through the little book and learned the few simple balloons, then later bought another book! It started just as a fun hobby for her children and their friends, but slowly she began to get better and better. She discovered many exciting balloon sculptures to make from videos later. Now Mandana attends international balloon conventions as part of a community of balloon entertainment professionals, learning new techniques and adding to her vast balloon repertoire! Some of her clients include: 3M, Lifetime Fitness, Ecolab, National Kidney Foundation, Special Olympics, Walk to End Hunger, Volunteers of America, Stillwater Medical, and countless schools, churches, and private parties.

Poitin Irish Band SaturDAY, JULY 25 • 1:00-4:00 PM Poitin (pronounced pah-CHEEN) is a band from Fargo-Moorhead that can be seen in the pubs and clubs throughout the region. They are regular performers at the Irish Fair of Minnesota in St. Paul where they describe Poitin as: “A six-member collaborative that blends traditional Irish jig harmonies with sensitive, compassionate ballads and raucous, up-tempo and active rebel tunes. A jack-of-all-trades, Poitin has released a total of five records – each differing in approach and style, vigor and composition while retaining a culturally and historically relevant and recognizable sound.” Known for its rocking rendition of Irish tunes, Poitin – which gets its name from a word meaning “illegal homemade whiskey” in Irish Gaelic - is an Irish band, formed in 2001. Jigs and reels, ballads and drinking songs, airs, polkas and waltzes are all part of Poitin’s repertoire. It’s a blending of Irish and the traditional music of the Red River Valley, amped up, with a heavy kick. Poitin’s most recent release is their 5th CD: Banks of Red River. Featuring original music from the Red River Valley, this new recording emphasizes the connections among Celtic, French-Canadian and Métis music and culture. The band’s makeup involves players with a variety of professional and educational experience, and has an age span of forty years from youngest to oldest. Instrumentation includes guitar, fiddle, banjo, bouzouki, the Irish drum (bodhran), bass, mandolin and trapset, creating a raditional, yet modern sound. Whether it is from the Emerald Isle or Irish-influenced music from Appalachia or the Red River Valley, Poitin’s goal is to introduce listeners to the tremendous variety of Irish music.

ELVIS IMPERSONATOR SaturDAY, JULY 25 • 5:30, 6:30 PM Elvis Impersonator Brad Boice Brad Boice started his Elvis Tribute in 2005 almost by mistake. He was attending a musical impersonator show with his wife JulAnn and friends. After watching the two “Elvis” impersonators perform that night, one of his friends said “Brad you can sing Elvis better than that!” and left to talk to the band. Within moments, Brad was on stage singing “Can’t Help Falling in Love”. The Crowd loved it! Since that night he has entertained thousands of people in many different venues across the United States. From his home in Minnesota to Las Vegas Nevada, Branson Mo., Cozumel Mexico, San Juan Puerto Rico and many points in between. Brad has also been a featured performer on both Royal Caribbean and Carnival Cruise lines.

Exhibitions of Birds Cancelled for 2015 Season

PancakE Breakfast

Fairs, swap meets, exotic sales and petting zoos will not include birds

Sunday, July 26 • 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

ST. PAUL — The Minnesota Board of Animal Health today announced its directive to cancel all bird exhibitions at county fairs, the State Fair, and other gatherings of birds. The Board’s directive is effective through the end of 2015 and also prohibits birds from being included in swap meets, exotic sales, and petting zoos. Since March 5, 2015, nearly 90 Minnesota farms have been impacted by H5N2 highly-pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). The purpose of the Board’s directive is to minimize the risk of potential further spread of the virus. The risk to the public related to H5N2 HPAI is very low and there is no food safety concern. “Taking this step makes sense,” said Dr. Beth Thompson, assistant director of the Minnesota Board of Animal Health. “We need to do everything possible to get rid of this virus and preventing the commingling of birds from different farms is one way to do that.” Animal health officials met with leadership of the Minnesota State Fair and University of Minnesota Extension earlier this week to discuss the situation. “This is a critical time for Minnesota’s poultry industry, and we’ll do whatever it takes to help,” said State Fair General Manager Jerry Hammer. “The Board of Animal Health has absolutely made the right decision. We’ll use this as an opportunity to further educate people about the challenges of food production.” “University of Minnesota Extension 4-H’s priority is youth and their learning experiences,” said Brad Rugg, Extension 4-H and State Fair and Animal Science program director. “Some 4-H’ers will be disappointed that they won’t be able to show their poultry projects at fairs this summer, but we’re exploring alternate learning opportunities to offer them at fairs and will share more details as plans develop. Part of our job developing the next generation of agriculture leaders includes teaching youth best practices to ensure the health and safety of the animals they raise, and this is that learning being put into action in the real world.” Minnesota’s poultry industry has experienced the largest impact as a result of HPAI. Steve Olson, executive director of the Minnesota Turkey Growers Association and Chicken and Egg Association of Minnesota said, “We know the decision to halt poultry exhibitions at our county fairs and the Minnesota State Fair was not an easy one to make. This certainly affects the 4-H kids who plan for their projects all year long, and also means fewer opportunities for fairgoers across the state to learn about raising poultry. However, this is the right decision because what’s most important at this point is protecting the health and well-being of the birds that are being raised by 4-H’ers, FFA members, and Minnesota’s poultry farmers.” Representatives from the Minnesota Board of Animal Health, Minnesota State Fair, Minnesota 4-H and Minnesota Turkey Growers Association will provide statements and answer questions pertaining to the 2015 bird exhibition decision. What: Media availability Who: Dr. Beth Thompson, Assistant Director, Minnesota Board of Animal Health Jerry Hammer, General Manager, Minnesota State Fair Brad Rugg, University of Minnesota Extension 4-H State Fair and Animal Science Program Director Steve Olson, Executive Director, Minnesota Turkey Growers Association and Chicken and Egg Association of Minnesota When: Friday, May 15, 2015 at 10:45 a.m. CST Where: Minnesota State Fairgrounds, Administration Building 1292 Cosgrove Street, St. Paul, MN The Minnesota Board of Animal Health is the lead animal disease response agency in the state and is working with other state and federal agencies and the poultry industry to eradicate HPAI.
