LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER Orange is the new black, small is the new big, and — when it comes to industries bursting onto the Liberty Lake scene — pizzeria is apparently the new bank or dental office. Here’s one more for you: Guide is the new directory. The publication you are holding has taken the baton from what for most of its 15-year history was called the Liberty Lake Community Directory. It’s a natural handoff, as we have spent the past several years expanding this publication one piece at a time to become more than just the community’s go-to phone book. Wherever the word “directory” led one to picture “kitchen-drawer reference,” we have tried to add doses of “coffee-table showpiece.” And you have been our secret weapon to this end: • Your submissions: A few years back we debuted a pair of annual contests showcasing community photography and kids’ artwork, but they have since become filled with such quality and beauty we feature the submissions throughout the publication, giving it the feel of an annual yearbook produced by and for the community.
Pointing to the year ahead with some key dates
Providing community and reference information
Highlighting local residents discovering their way
• Your stories: Over time — and this year more than ever before — we have highlighted community heroes and talented local residents in these pages, each one illustrating through their own lens a piece of the mosaic that is the great community of Liberty Lake. • Your suggestions: We love to hear from you, and over the years your input has steadily improved this publication. This past summer, we took things a step further by surveying our readers and business partners. More than 90 of you helped provide input that has led to several upgrades to this year’s publication, including a brand-new section on recreation. And so the 2016 Liberty Lake Guide was formed. Our hope is that as you explore these pages, you will find that it reflects not only our community, but the pride we all feel as a part of it. We think you will find it useful — not just for reference, not just for making connections, but as a celebration of our shared home. Josh Johnson Living, working and playing in Liberty Lake P.S. Construction on two of the endeavors – a remodel of Greenacres Elementary and the creation of a brand new school, Liberty Creek Elementary – has already begun and will bring changes to some students in the Liberty Lake area. An evaluation process of school attendance areas will take place in 2016 in anticipation of adjusting boundaries for the 2017-2018 school year. For updates and more, visit www.cvsd.org.

STRUCTURING A K-2 CULTURE
CVSD Superintendent Ben Small and Jerrol Olson, planning principal of Liberty Creek Elementary, show off a school shirt during the groundbreaking ceremony on Jan. 6, 2016.
Planning principal shares insight on new LL school While construction on Liberty Creek Elementary officially began in February 2016, plans for the new school have been building in Jerrol Olson’s mind for well over a year. Olson accepted the role of planning principal for the community’s newest school in early 2015 shortly after the construction bond passed. He has a particular connection to the area, as he grew up in Spokane Valley, attended CVSD schools and has resided with his family in Liberty Lake for 15 years. He began his stint with
the Central Valley School District in 1997 and has served as principal at various CVSD schools. Even though the building will not open to students until the 2017-2018 school year, Olson has been busy planning and coordinating with a core team on the school, which will serve kindergarten through second grade students in the eastern portion of the district. He recently took time to share with The Guide about the path that led to his unique position of creating a learning
environment for young elementary students.
Choosing a career I remember taking a class as an undergraduate that required students to serve as volunteers in a local school on a regular basis. It was at that time I realized that many of the interests I had included helping others be successful in their interests. It was this experience that really drew me to education. The more I became involved, the more I was certain of this career path.
Impact of educators Many of the teachers I had over the years significantly impacted me. When I consider my years at Greenacres Elementary, I would have to praise the teachers for their patience, firmness and understanding. So many of them knew when I needed a firm hand (literally), yet also knew when to let me assert a level of independence that was part of my personality. As I went through Greenacres Junior High, many teachers were able to capitalize on my particular interests and
COMMUNITY began to specifically challenge me to achieve more by putting forth a greater effort. My experience at Central Valley High School was certainly where teachers demanded that I perform to my potential; they would not let me off the hook with anything less than my best.
Transition to new role For 11 years I served as principal at Ponderosa Elementary. I accepted the position of planning principal shortly after the passage of the bond in February 2015. Work in the role began right away as it was evident that we had a lot of work to do in a relatively short amount of time. I balanced the responsibilities of the new position with continuing as the principal of Ponderosa Elementary for the remainder of that school year.
“How can we not simply build the building, but also build a culture that is driven to assuring the success of the students we serve? That is truly the excitement of this challenge. – Jerrol Olson, planning principal, Liberty Creek Elementary
Creating a new school Planning a new school is a rare opportunity. I thoroughly enjoyed being principal at Ponderosa Elementary and Adams Elementary where I had the pleasure of working with extremely high-quality teachers who teamed with parents to maintain a keen focus on assuring the success of students. My interest in planning a new school is rooted in this very concept. How can we not simply build the building, but also build a culture that is driven to assuring the success of the students we serve? That is truly the excitement of this challenge.
Selecting a core team In planning a new school, the many pieces can be complex. To address the complexity and begin the development of building
culture, a Core Planning Team was selected. As architects worked to design the school building itself, it was the task of the Core Planning Team to share in the decision to be sure that the design supports the programs offered for students. The scope includes not only the design of the building and selection of furniture and equipment, but the development of age-appropriate programs, policies and procedures, selection of staff, and development of relationships and culture that help define who we are at Liberty Creek Elementary.
Unique setup Liberty Creek will serve kindergarten through grade 2 students. This is the first of this grade configuration in the Central Valley School District. I believe this will allow us to focus specifically on the needs and interests of these early learners
15 in a way that will ensure success as they transition to grades 3 through 5 at Liberty Lake Elementary and elsewhere.
Classroom magic For anyone who has had the pleasure of being in an elementary school on the first day of school, you recognize the nervous energy, the excitement, the anticipation that takes place as the day begins. But the real magic happens as the kids start their day inside the classroom. Each student is beginning that ever-so-important connection as the teacher welcomes each of them to their classroom. The teacher has the complete attention of ALL of the students, and for the first time they have a collective personality as THIS class. It is the start of a relationship with a teacher, or the start of a friendship with a classmate that may be remembered for a lifetime.
Mr. Olson encourages students during the groundbreaking at the site of the new school for those in kindergarten through second grade. The school, which is currently under construction, is scheduled to open in fall 2017.

MEET THE WINNING PHOTOGRAPHER…
Jonas LaPier
inspires him and how he develops his shutterbug skills.
With 10 years’ experience already under his belt, Jonas LaPier is hardly a novice in the area of photography. The Central Valley High School student got an early start, winning the state PTSA Reflections contest when he was just 7. The 17-year-old recently added another accolade to his collection when judges selected his photo titled “Victory” (featured on the cover) as first place in the 2016 Liberty Lake Guide photography contest. The Guide contacted LaPier to find out what
Q: Why did you choose to submit this particular image for the contest? A: I chose the photo of Brandon Anglin holding his bike because I thought it captured the determination of Liberty Lake residents to succeed and take part in their community. It was taken on top of Carlson Hill (Saltese Uplands Conservation Area) in late fall of 2015. Q: Are you inspired by the work of any particular photographers? A: I love the works of Ansel Adams and Frans Lanting. My brother is named after Ansel Adams so I feel a personal connection
to his name, and I love the landscape images he is famous for. I also admire Frans Lanting, as I attended a seminar where he talked about his photography experiences and learned that patience and lighting are important for creating great photographs. Q: What is your equipment of choice? A: I took the photos with an 18-55mm Canon zoom lens. However I take my camera everywhere so the most useful piece of equipment (excluding the camera) is my camera backpack because it allows me to explore new places. Q: What types of subject matter do you most enjoy experimenting with?
A: I really love macro photography when the lighting of a particular object is peculiar or eye-catching. I recently purchased a 10-18mm wide angle lens so I am excited to experiment with more landscape photography. Q: Do you have a favorite location in the area? A: I love the natural areas, especially the Liberty Lake County Park, Saltese Uplands and Centennial Trail. I enjoy taking photographs and watching the sun set on top of Carlson Hill. The view over the valley is spectacular, and sometimes the sun casts a purple hue across the mountains and Liberty Lake to the east.

AN EYE ON THE COMMUNITY
Employees of OpenEye provided the Ronald McDonald House a much-needed facelift by updating the playground, installing TV wall mounts and cooking lunch for the Spokane charity. The Liberty Lake company closes business four times per year to focus on work- or community-related projects.
It’s not uncommon for employees wearing clothing with an OpenEye logo to be approached by kids in a public place saying, “I know who you are!” They’ll go on to share how they had fun working together with employees during one of the Build a Bike events, something the Liberty Lake company has hosted in partnership with Central Valley School District for five holiday seasons. OpenEye, a developer of intelligent software and hardware systems, prides itself in making financial and hands-on contributions to many local organizations. And it has not gone unnoticed. The company was awarded a Meritorious
Service Award by CVSD in 2015 for its investment in students. All OpenEye employees – from shipping/receiving personnel to founder and CEO Rick Sheppard – are also provided the opportunity to volunteer during work hours in a mentoring program with CVSD students of varying ages. Approximately 20 employees have been paired up with students to develop a relationship over the course of the school year. “The volunteers themselves are all civically minded and appreciate the opportunity to engage and
give back to the community,” Sheppard said. “This has been an opportunity for us to lead by example and encourage other individuals and companies to get involved and find their own way to make a difference.” With a commitment to being good stewards of the community and providing opportunities for employees, Sheppard recently shared how these meaningful projects give value to students, employees and the company as a whole. Q: How did OpenEye’s partnership with CVSD come about?
A: We’ve been involved in some capacity with the school district for about five years. It began with our Build a Bike program and evolved from there. Our employees enjoyed the time they spent with students and wanted to find times to do more. Because of that positive feedback, we started talking about a mentoring program that began in the 2014-2015 school year. Q: Explain what goes into the annual Build a Bike event. A: In mid-November, CVSD selects students and provides us with a list of genders and ages to enable us to procure everything we need for the

Investing in others “We believe in being good stewards of our community. There is value not only to the community but also to our employees, giving them a greater sense of purpose in their work. Deep down, people take satisfaction in knowing that their work is not only helping them to make money, but to make a difference.” – Rick Sheppard, OpenEye CEO
program – bikes, helmets, bike locks and backpacks. When they come to OpenEye in December, we give them a presentation about what we do and why they’re here, emphasizing that the kids were selected because they worked really
hard and exhibited PACE character traits. Then we run them through a tech lab and a video lab where they can play with camera systems to identify items in the warehouse. Once they’ve run through the labs, they’re paired up with OpenEye buddies who take them to build bikes and eat lunch together. Our numbers have varied from year to year, but we had approximately 100 students come through during the 2015 event who were matched up with 80 or 90 employees. Q: How does the mentoring program work? A: We encourage our mentors to meet with students weekly, and they’ll typically spend an hour together enjoying lunch, helping with a homework project, reading
51
or providing extra tutoring. Most importantly, it’s about spending time together and being a positive role model for kids while encouraging them to work hard – letting them know that hard work will lead to success and opportunities to work at companies like ours. Q: What has been the feedback from those who have volunteered with students? A: The first year we hosted Build a Bike, I had a handful of employees in my office after work literally crying and saying it was the coolest thing they’ve had an opportunity to do throughout their careers. The vast majority who volunteered during the first year of the mentoring program re-signed up for a second year. I believe this speaks to the fact that they found it to be rewarding.
Q: Why is engaging with the community such a big part of the culture at OpenEye? A: We’ve been proud of the programs as well as the results. For a long time, our mission has been to conduct business in a way that positively impacts our employees, our customers and our community. These programs provide structure to execute that. From a practical standpoint, it gives us a better sense of purpose and a way to put our money where our mouth is. Often the easiest way to engage in community responsibility is to write a check. We’ve tried to provide employees with a hands-on approach to give back. When you take that approach, it benefits the employee as much as it does the community.
For the past five years, OpenEye has opened its doors to CVSD students for a Build a Bike event where kids are paired with employees for a time of learning and building together.

WASHINGTON TRAILS ASSOCIATION AT LIBERTY LAKE REGIONAL PARK
PHOTO: BRUCE-ANDRE.SQUARESPACE.COM
The area Located in the southeast part of Liberty Lake, the park was once home to one of the multiple resorts that dotted the lake. Visitors who came to enjoy the amenities during the early 20th century helped Liberty Lake earn its reputation as Spokane’s Inland Seashore. In 1966, Spokane County purchased the land to create the Liberty Lake Regional Park, which today covers more than 3,500 acres.
Highlights The trails are among the most popular in the
Spokane County Parks system. The 8-mile loop has a 1,200-foot gain in elevation and includes multiple bridges, creeks and switchbacks, as well as a waterfall and an old-growth cedar forest. There is abundant flora, and wildlife sightings of animals such as deer and moose are common.
Role of WTA Washington Trails Association (WTA) is the voice for hikers in the state of Washington, working to preserve, enhance and promote hiking opportunities. As
the nation’s largest statebased hiking nonprofit, the group works with volunteers to maintain trails and promote hiking as a healthy, fun way to explore the outdoors.
Recent work In 2015, WTA work groups moved the Split Creek Trail up-slope for better drainage and longterm sustainability. It was difficult work due to steep terrain and the movement of lots of rock, said WTA Coordinator Holly Weiler. Located on the opposite side of the creek from the main trail, the new trail
is extremely durable due to rock retaining walls and rock placements underfoot.
Choose your adventure A variety of trail options allows all abilities and ages to enjoy the system, Weiler said. The Split Creek Trail paired with the main trail makes a short loop, while the waterfall trail paired with the Edith Hansen Bridal Trail is a favorite longer hike. The park also provides the setting for high school cross country meets, trail runs and snowshoeing.

Remember Carry the 10 essentials, even for a short hike (www.wta. org/hiking-info/basics/ ten-essentials). Weiler is a firm believer in Leave No Trace ethics, which includes the “pack it in, pack it out” philosophy, as well as traveling on durable surfaces to protect the environment. Furthermore, park rules state that dogs must remain on a leash.
Get involved Pick up litter while hiking. Write trip reports on the WTA website to let others know what can be found along the trail. Join a WTA work party to give back as part of a group. No experience is necessary, and WTA takes care of the tools and the training, Weiler said. “It's a rewarding experience that gives hikers a sense of ownership – our volunteers always remember ‘their’ trail section – along with a sense of accomplishment.”

A NATURAL HIGH An outdoor adventure in Liberty Lake’s backyard became a reality last spring when Mica Moon Zip Tours opened for business. Developed by Rik and Heidi Stewart, the zip line course threads through forest glens, over valleys and near historic moonshine camps just a few miles from the heart of the community. While the name may refer to the illicit activity that took place in the area during Prohibition, Mica Moon’s website brags that today’s experience on the mountain is “the most fun anyone could have while being completely sober.” With last year’s attendance reaching nearly 3,000 customers, people seem to agree. Thrill seekers of all ages and abilities took to the course during its debut season for a chance to soar high in the treetops and catch a glimpse of wildlife or moonshine remnants. Grandparents zipped alongside children and grandchildren. Couples, friends and co-workers shared the experience, while anniversaries, birthdays and graduations were celebrated on the course.

AN ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE Bob Scott remembers picking up a golf club when he was 13. Along with a buddy and his dad, Scott started golfing at a 9-hole course in Pullman, continued to enjoy the game through high school and even played two years on the WSU golf team. Beginning his career in golf as a cook at Indian Canyon, Scott quickly moved up the ranks into the pro shop and then on to becoming head pro. He did a six-month stint at a coastal course, which he described as a “country club experience” that helped him determine he was more of a public course person. The 56-year-old has served as a local pro since 1992, starting at Liberty Lake Golf Course and then moving over to MeadowWood, where he has been since 1996. Scott took an unexpected break from his job last year when he was told by doctors that he had a brain tumor. His crew and community members rallied to show their support by organizing the October BS to Cancer benefit tournament that filled both county courses in Liberty Lake and bolstered
Scott’s determination to live life to the fullest. Scott’s diagnosis hasn’t slowed him down. He has traveled and skied in between treatments. After spending some time on the slopes, he said he’s looking forward to hanging up his skis and getting back to the greens with his crew and fellow golfers, who have been a support to him during this past year. Q: What are some of the memorable moments of your career? A: I set the course record at Indian Canyon in 1999. I didn’t think I would ever set a record, but it stayed for seven years. That was my claim to fame as a player. When I got to Liberty Lake in 1992, there were around 1,800 people living here. Watching the whole city evolve and grow has been wonderful. Q: What has kept you as a pro in the area all these years? A: I’ve got to admit, I love the Spokane area. It’s big enough, but it’s not a Seattle or a L.A. It’s also got all four seasons. I’m pretty much off for four months so I
can ski and then when it’s time to golf, I put the skis away. Q: Do you have a favorite hole in the area? A: The toughest par 5 in town is No. 16 at MeadowWood. Q: What do you love most about your job? A: The people. In this job, you have to be a people person. It’s what I love. I’ve been real fortunate to have a great crew – it makes life easy. Q: When did you first start having health issues? A: I had some health issues over the past couple years that doctors couldn’t figure out. And then last summer, one of my assistants started noticing things and brought it to my attention. I just knew something was wrong, and in August they determined I had a brain tumor. Then we started the process of putting in a port, chemo treatments, hospital visits. What I‘ve learned through this process is that everyone’s bodies handle things different. Thankfully, my tumor has shrunk quite a bit.
The life of a pro “There are a lot of facets to being a head pro; I do 20 different things a day. My biggest duty is to be an ambassador of the golf course and a welcoming host. To me, playing is part of it, a part of the game. But what we’re really doing is running a business.” – Bob Scott, head professional, MeadowWood Golf Course Q: The October benefit tournament had a huge attendance. How did you feel that day? A: The only time I cried in the last seven months was when my assistant told me they were having the benefit. The support has been off the charts, the most humbling thing in the world. It’s the biggest shotgun tournament they’ve ever had; it filled two courses with 370 golfers. It impacted the way I look at life in a real good way. Q: What are you most looking forward to this golf season? A: Just getting back into the same routine. Once you’re in that situation, you never know what’s going to happen. I’ve tried to be active and have a good attitude. I’m so fortunate. For me, it’s just a bump in the road.

HOLIDAY HILLS For a short period of time, residents around Liberty Lake didn’t have far to travel for winter recreation. During the 1970s, an old basketball camp located in the area known as Carlson Hill was developed into a resort for skiing and snowmobile enthusiasts. Advertised to become the “Disneyland of the Inland Empire,” Holiday Hills struggled to stay in operation and closed by the end of the decade. The remaining vacant lodge was destroyed by a fire in 1998.

SPORTS, SETBACKS MARKED FULFILLING PATH FOR FRALICH By Mike Vlahovich Guide Contributor Balky knees and disillusionment with college basketball changed Laura Fralich’s way of thinking. The former Central Valley High School basketball standout who helped spearhead the Bears first girls State 4A championship in 1993 began a globetrotting journey that took her from basketball to ultimately finding what she’d been looking for. Two decades later, she is a sports medicine physician with a resume as long as the trip that eventually brought her back to Spokane Valley. “You’ve seen it a million times over,” said Fralich, who practices out of Columbia Medical Associates’ Liberty Lake office. “Athletes maybe don’t end up where we all thought we might, for one thing or another.” As if channeling sentiment from the Rolling Stones’ “You can’t always get what you want,” Fralich added, “What we hope for isn’t what we get, but what we need.” What she originally wanted was a Division I
college basketball career. What she eventually got was something entirely different. A harbinger, perhaps, was the left knee anterior cruciate ligament tear as a junior at CV, the year before the Bears won the whole thing. After graduation and a fling at Division I St. Mary’s in the West Coast Conference, she tore up the other knee while playing at Spokane Falls Community College the following year, and her dreams went up in smoke. The injuries, Fralich said, played a small part in changing her career path. It was the grind of her freshman year at St. Mary’s that altered her perspective. That year, said Fralich, “I looked around and saw there were a lot of players as good as me and a lot better than me. There had to be more to life than basketball. I knew that when I finished, I had better figure out what that was.” Thus the idea that begat her Gulliver-like travels, including stops at eight different colleges on the road to what she was looking for.
School of hard knocks Her love affair with sports began because of a boy in second grade, she revealed with a chuckle. She liked the boy, who was playing on a YMCA youth basketball team, and she wanted to join him. “I know that sounds ridiculous, but that’s what got me into it,” she said. Once at CV, Fralich became a two-sport standout both in basketball and soccer. She was honorable mention All-Greater Spokane League in basketball as a sophomore; a first-team selection despite her injury as a junior; and in her senior year was named league MVP — this latter accomplishment while playing for a Bears championship team that was unbeaten in 29 games and not really tested at state. It was the culmination of a career that included two fourthplace state trophies and a cumulative 75-12 record. She remembers vividly the first ACL tear, coming on her birthday during the Stinky Sneaker spirit game at CV against rival University. Continued on page 110

FRALICH’S 1993 TEAM IS HONORED AT CV ON ITS WALL OF FAME.
Continued from page 108 “It doesn’t get any better than that,” Fralich ruefully deadpanned. “I wanted to play in college, and at the time I was pretty worried.” After graduation, it was off to that hoped-for Division I career. The first year proved unfulfilling, so she came home to play at SFCC and was ticketed for Cornell until she blew out the other knee six minutes into a game in front of the university’s coaches. Her playing career came to a gratifying conclusion at NAIA Division I school, The Masters College (Santa Clarita, Calif.), where she would be a Pacific Northwest All-Region team member and the school’s most
valuable player and outstanding woman athlete. “For me it was the perfect situation,” Fralich said of the lower-key experience. “It worked out great.” Bringing it full circle Biology teaching degree in hand, Fralich taught for a while but decided if she were to become a doctor she needed to begin soon. She earned her degree in medicine at Ross University, did her residency at Providence Hospital in Spokane and earned a sports medicine fellowship to the University of Massachusetts. Today she has a practice at CMA East - Liberty Lake Family Medicine, joining the sports medicine group of Columbia
Medical Associates. In addition to writing for professional publications, Fralich has worked the Boston Marathon, at NCAA tournament events, for minor league baseball teams, with various college teams and as a hotshot crew EMT (wildland firefighter). She currently serves as team doctor at Gonzaga Prep. “Sports wasn’t the endall, be-all,” Fralich said. “It was a means to an end.” Looking back on her career at Central Valley, Fralich said she’d be lying if she didn’t admit to being proud to be on the first girls’ team to finish with an unbeaten season. “I don’t recall anyone saying we needed to go
undefeated. We all had a goal to be state champions because we came so close the year before. We really thought we’d win that, too,” she said. “We played hard, had a lot a lot of fun and won a lot of games. We were just pleased to see that all the work we put in over the years paid off.” Even today, she said, more people bring up the past than she does. “It’s very flattering that so many years later, they still remember it,” Fralich said. Contributor Mike Vlahovich is a veteran Spokane Valley sportswriter and member of the Inland Northwest Hall of Fame Scroll of Honor.

ANOTHER PERFECT RUN Twenty-three years after Laura Fralich (pages 108110) led Central Valley to its first state girls basketball championship, the Bears were at it again this March, defeating Snohomish 5748 in the title game. The win capped a perfect 28-0 season for CV and represented the school’s fourth state title in girls basketball. The Bears remained poised at state, advancing despite a tough draw. (CV’s semifinal and quarterfinal victims rebounded to finish third and fourth.) And the winning tradition established by that 1993 team doesn’t show signs of slowing down, as this year’s championship game starting lineup featured three sophomores (Hailey Christopher and twins Lexie and Lacie Hull) and two freshmen (Mady Simmelink and Camryn Skaife). Other contributors included sophomores Michaela Laabs, Katie Hawkins and Kalle Crouch, freshmen Tomekia Whitman and Kate Sams, and a pair of upperclassmen, junior Courtney Carolan and senior Emily Burns, who had their seasons cut short by injuries. Pictured: Above, Laabs is followed by Simmelink as they celebrate with fans at the Tacoma Dome. Below from left, Lexie Hull, Christopher, Lacie Hull and Simmelink are interviewed by the press.
