Acorn

Project Co-housing complex Location Ankara, Turkey Year 2017 Instructor Ozge Selen Kansu Duran selen.duran@bilkent.edu.tr

1

Acorn is a co-housing complex situated in the heart of Ankara. The capital lacks green areas due to rapid urbanization and two of the largest parks are located close to the worked site. The main objective of the design is to create a space for urban farming while connecting these two parks by a green belt. It does not only aim to provide quality living space but also to increase the quality of outdoors. The dwelling is designed in a C formation to compliment the area that is used for urban farming and make the created level difference suitable for a micro climate. This open green space is followed by semi-open greenhouse facades which connect to the different type of residential units. These units differ from separate units to combinable twin units to duplex residents. Acorn is a pedestrian friendly city intervention as well as a co-housing complex.

The Kraken

Project Nautical, Aquatic Exploration and Production Centre Location Alanya, Turkey Year 2018 Instructor Meral Ozdengiz meral.ozdengiz@bilkent.edu.tr

5

The Kraken is an urban intervention to the historical city of Alanya. It is aimed to create public spaces with pathways through elevated platforms. The main objective is to merge local activity with rarely visited touristic site. The design spreads through a capillary formation of streets and alleyways and intensifies at the historic heart of the city. The dwellings emerge from the platforms, which are the main building blocks of the design, forming in organic nature.

The Aquatic Exploration and Production Cent is further developed in this project.

The Aquatic Exploration and Research Centre

The shape of the platforms are inspired by the solid yet curvy fortification walls So the shape of the Aquatic Exploration and Research Centre is obtained by pushing and pulling the solid shape, making voids and projections. The exterior shell is the continuation of the pedestrian platforms. The roof connects with the upper walkway while the entrance is accessed by the walkway through the historical shipyard. These two pathways join by a set of stairs that serve as an auditorium. The upper path also connects to the Nautical Exploration and Production Centre, not breaking the fluidity of the design.

South Elevation 8

The Aquatic Exploration and Research Centre is a three story high building that serves mainly as a museum. The exhibition space is situated underwater with interactive displays, algae farming and a labyrinth of aquariums. The idea of infinity is emphasized with the organization of this floor. The ground floor serves as a public institution with a cafĂŠ and a store along with a temporary exhibition area. The upper floor was designed for offices and workshop spaces.

The “Steam Locomotive” is a part of the complex of the offered Art & Design District in Praha 7. Parní Lokomotiva consists of four different buildings which are connected through a common square and a web of elevated surfaces. It aims to create job opportunities for young designers and artists while providing a service Prague lacks, a Market Hall. The essence of the design itself is to treasure the industrial and raw spirit of the district with a modern touch. It targets the young local population as it will become the heart of this created Art & Design District while feeding the hipster spirit of the neighbourhoods, Letná and Holešovice. Rather than serving as a touristic centre, Parní Lokomotiva aims to become a multipurpose cultural activity centre for the local youth. One of the design’s main focus is to create spaces for the artists to unleash their muse. The materials were chosen thoughtfully to complement and enhance the industrial history of Prague. It is built upon the train tracks which peak throughout the slabs. The heavy use of exposed brick and concrete with steel structure also serves the purpose.

Multiplicity vs Eclectism Project Revitalizing the historical centre, Ulus Location Ankara, Turkey Year 2019 Instructors Cristina Pallini & Giorgio Gasco Collaborative work done in the Multiplicity vs Eclectism Workshop. Worked on developing the concept and created the graphics

13

Ulus, the Old Town of Ankara, is where the urban development started and grew. This provides an opportunity to observe the profusion of the urban fabric. Ulus today is dense in terms of massing and the urban sprawl caused the historic buildings to be left in the shadows. Anafartalar building is the first shopping centre of Ankara which is also an architecture legacy of early Turkish Republic era. The main design idea is to connect then and today together. To highlight the history and provide the lacking public space in the region the design interferes with the current empty lot, creating a sunken plaza. Using the existing connection through underground, the plaza mimics the now rundown part of the Anafartalar building. The intervention acts as an extension of the existing building, with the sunken plaza it creates a social hub and an interior garden which smoothly connects with the topography. The circulation cores and the patio are designed to connect main road axis in Anafartalar Street. By benefiting the level difference, the sunken plaza is accessible through the Anfartalar building and leads to the main squares that are situated on the street level.

Cat as the Designer Project Cat/Dog Shelter Displayed 3rd Istanbul Design Biennial, Are We Human(e)?

Every design is a product of humankind; the world is designed according to mankind with almost no regard for the other living species. These species had to adopt to the living style of men but what if they were able to design as well? The aim of “Cat as the Designer is to give this opportunity to a species that is a part of our daily lives: cats. When given the thought everything that is designed for domestic or stray cats are in favour of human more that they are of cats. The design is aimed to be a shelter which satisfies the most basic instinct, survival. It is designed as a space where a cat can be safe from predators and bad weather conditions.

15

What distinguishes this design from any other shelter is that it changes continuously, the panels on the sides move according to the cat’s movements, allowing it to design its own space. The idea of using a tree as a structural element is to use nature as a design element and strengthen the connection of nature and stray cats which seems to be fading due to constant urbanization.

Design and Architecture Society is one of the biggest student-based design societies in Turkey with over 300 design students. We have four sub branches, Organization, Pafta Magazine, Tasarim Bilkent (Design Bilkent), and An Architect a Space. The sub branches and events are run by a core team which I have been a part of for 3 years. I started as an active member later to quickly rise up to be the Coordinator of Organization, where I led a team to organize design trips, such as trips to the Istanbul Design Biennial, and social events like brunches and movie nights. I also collaborated with other Coordinators to organize An Architect a Space, where we invite local architects to give us a walkthrough of an iconic building they built. During my time as the Chairwoman, I managed the core team and were able to raise up to 30,000 liras for our largest scale event, Tasarim Bilkent. It is one of the most comprehensive architecture based event under the initiative of undergraduate students. We hosted names from world-known architecture firms as Precht, SOM, Gehry Partners, Zaha Hadid Architects, SHoP Architects.
