EVERYONE’S PARTICIPATION MATTERS We are pleased to present to you the 9th edition of Perkins Coie Diversity Year in Review. This issue highlights our accomplishments and is a reflection of the firm’s commitment to diversity: to women; LGBT individuals; people of color; and lawyers with disabilities, as well as to those who contribute to our efforts with inclusiveness. This journey has been extraordinary with the support of our longtime diversity champion, former firmwide managing partner, Bob Giles. Bob’s thoughtfulness and commitment to building a diverse workforce will be missed. We are excited to continue our work with the new firmwide managing partner, John Devaney. You will learn about John’s ties to diversity from a young age, and continuing throughout his career. We also celebrate the life of a young woman who inspired us. Sher Kung is one of the first recipients of Perkins Coie’s inaugural Diversity Champion Award. The launch of this annual recognition program could not have been possible without the vision and enthusiasm of our Strategic Diversity Committee, led by outgoing chair, Los Angeles Partner Audra Mori. It is our honor to celebrate our attorneys, staff and team who drive excellence in diversity. Each day our profession challenges us to accelerate diversity and inclusion in meaningful ways. Advancing diversity is a team effort where everyone’s participation matters. We have been working hard, but we have more work to do. I am proud of our efforts and our people. THE STRATEGIC DIVERSITY COMMITTEE ADVANCING DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION SINCE 2006, Perkins Coie’s Strategic Diversity Committee (SDC) has developed strategies and policies to advance diversity and inclusion at the firm and within the communities we serve.
In 2014, the SDC launched the firm’s Diversity Champions Awards program—an annual recognition of individuals and teams committed to diversity. In the inaugural year, four diversity champions were selected from 65 peer nominations. Additionally, a record number of first-year law students applied to our 1L Diversity Fellowship program; and the firm’s representation of diverse partners, counsel and attorneys also increased from years prior.
The pages of this Diversity publication further highlight the innovative efforts of firmwide leaders, local diversity committees and affinity groups throughout 2014. In looking ahead, there is still work that requires our immediate and long-term focus to sustain these efforts. The SDC is committed to promoting a vibrant work environment that embraces diverse people, ideas and perspectives. We are proud of Perkins Coie’s people who help us advance our common goal each day.

January 19, 1983 – August 29, 2014 Known for her work on civil rights advocacy cases, including the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) lawsuit that challenged the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy, Sher helped the ACLU set a precedent in the representation of Major Margaret Witt, a decorated solider discharged from the Air Force for being gay. Beginning as a Perkins Coie summer associate in 2008, Sher traveled to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba to assist her colleagues at the trial of Salim Hamdan before a military commission. Sher’s pro bono practice included obtaining Special Immigrant Juvenile Status and eventually a green card for a juvenile client, negotiating a resolution among small business owners regarding sexual orientation-based discrimination, representing a client in administrative proceedings seeking federal health benefits for a
same-sex spouse, and advocating for a domestic violence victim through protection order proceedings and dissolution. A tireless advocate for LGBT rights, Sher served on the Seattle Gay Lesbian Bisexual Transgender Bar Association’s Board of Directors and served as a board member of the QLaw Foundation, a Seattle-based gay rights legal affinity group. A beloved partner, mother, daughter, friend, and colleague, her courage pushed our society closer to equality. Sher Kung—an inspiring Diversity Champion. An exceptional litigator and relentless optimist, Seattle associate Sher Kung, 31, was killed in a bicycling accident in August 2014.

THE TIES THAT BIND US Meet Firmwide Managing Partner John Devaney
GROWING UP IN New York in the late 1960s as the youngest and only brother to four liberal activist sisters, John Devaney was out in the streets campaigning for the Equal Rights Amendment when he was just 13 years old.
He cut his teeth as a trial attorney in the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice, enforcing Title VII of the Civil Rights Act—the provision that prohibits employment discrimination— against state and local governments around the country. Today, from his Perkins Coie office in Washington, D.C. (where one of his featured pictures depicts Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. looking out into the crowd from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial), Devaney leads a 1,000-lawyer firm with a mission to provide the highest-quality legal service while preserving and strengthening a workplace culture of professional excellence and collaboration. Perkins Coie’s Firmwide Managing Partner is putting the concept and practice of diversity into action as a key to accomplishing that mission. “If you’ve got a diverse workforce of staff and lawyers, you’re going to provide better client service, better problem solving and better decision making, because you’re going to bring different perspectives,” Devaney said. “From a client service perspective, diversity is very important because our clients are diverse. If you have a diverse staff handling client matters, the likelihood of them bonding, to be able to relate to clients, is much higher,” Devaney said. “So much of client service is about developing relationships that allow you to get to know your client’s business and what their problems are.” AT HIS CORE
Devaney, at 57, officially assumed the role of Firmwide Managing Partner in January 2015. Before then, he was a member of Perkins Coie’s Executive and Management Committees and served from 2005 to 2010 as the D.C. office’s Managing Partner. Since joining Perkins Coie in 1988, Devaney maintained a successful practice focused in commercial litigation, political

law litigation and communications law. He became known for his work on behalf of telecommunications clients involving novel issues relating to the implementation and interpretation of the Telecommunications Act of 1996, and more recently, in matters with national implications relating to enforcement of the federal Voting Rights Act of 1965. For Devaney, issues of civil rights and diversity “are core issues.” Before he joined the firm in the mid-1980s, Devaney traveled the country as a trial attorney with the DOJ, litigating against such entities as Louisiana’s Department of Transportation for refusing to recruit and hire African Americans, the City of Gallup in New Mexico for failing to recruit and hire American Indians in local government jobs, and several Chicago suburbs for employment discrimination. He won a summary judgment motion in 1986, when his theory of discrimination prevailed, and negotiated favorable settlement agreements with those dozen suburbs, opening up their public employment to African Americans. Devaney took the Title VII enforcement program to Detroit, Michigan and sued nearly 15 suburbs there, including historically discriminatory Dearborn, and he did the same in Warren.
IF YOU’RE NOT DIVERSE, YOU’RE NOT DRAWING FROM THE BEST PEOPLE. When it came time for him and his wife Deborah Reagan to start a family, Devaney made the move from government to Perkins Coie. He joined the firm as an associate and became a general commercial litigator. He was elevated to the partner ranks around the time the Telecommunications Act of 1996 passed, which significantly reformed regulations on telephone and broadcasting companies and was the first piece of legislation to address Internet access in the United States. Shortly thereafter, Devaney became one of the country’s first expert lawyers in the legislation and spent the next 15 years in this area. Around 2010, Devaney was asked by a fellow partner in the firm’s Political Law group to become involved in a major case in Texas over voter redistricting. He co-tried the case with the DOJ in Washington, D.C. in 2012, and that team succeeded in getting the Texas congressional voting map thrown out as violating Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Since then, Devaney has had
his hand in several other high-profile voter redistricting cases, including successful cases against Florida and Virginia. FULL CIRCLE–RETURNING TO HIS ROOTS
Debunking the notion that an attorney at a big firm cannot make a living as a civil rights lawyer, Devaney in recent years returned to his roots. He returned to the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs, where he had been handling pro bono cases before he became immersed in management roles at the firm, to now serve as a member of the organization’s board of directors. Though Devaney’s first brush with diversity and civil rights issues came at an early age, he attended a somewhat integrated public elementary school, in a middle-class town 25 miles outside Manhattan, around the time of the assassinations of Dr. King and Senator Robert Kennedy. At the height of the women’s rights movement and the Vietnam War, Devaney was often pushed by his four older sisters to join the marches and protests. “That was my world. Back then, in the late ‘60s, it was pretty hard even as a teenager not to be political because of Vietnam, the women’s movement—it was a part of everybody’s life,” Devaney said. “That’s one of the reasons why I followed this path.” PROACTIVELY ADVANCING DIVERSITY
While many other law firms are still trying to sell the business case for diversity, Perkins Coie’s leaders harness the richness of ideas, backgrounds and perspectives to create business value. “Our population in this country is so diverse. If you think about having a high-quality workforce you need to draw from all populations—you’ve got to. If you’re not diverse, you’re not drawing from the best people,” Devaney said. “That’s a starting point.” “What I can do as Managing Partner, and what my colleagues in management can do, is espouse the importance of diversity to us as a firm and take concrete steps to do well with diversity,” Devaney said. “Hiring, recruiting, retaining, and making available a diverse group of lawyers and staff members to serve their clients is the most obvious thing you can do.” “When we speak of diversity, we of course are focusing on lawyers, but we’re also focusing on the importance of diversity in our staff.”

At the start of his tenure as Firmwide Managing Partner, Devaney had already met with leaders in the Diversity Department to discuss how Perkins Coie can be proactive in identifying diverse candidates in certain markets and exploring their interests in possibly joining the firm.
WE MUST RAISE THE AWARENESS OF THE IMPORTANCE OF MENTORING AND NURTURING OUR DIVERSE ATTORNEYS. As a firm that got its start in Seattle more than 100 years ago, Perkins Coie today has made its mark as a major player among the Am Law 50, with 16 offices in the U.S. and three in Asia. In its efforts to advance diversity within the firm, its unique geographic footprint presents both an opportunity and a challenge. “One thing that is unique about us is that we’re in 16 geographical markets in the United States, including some cities that have very diverse populations. One of the opportunities is that we’ve got New York, D.C., Chicago, L.A. and San Francisco,” he said. “The challenges are that we also are in markets where populations aren’t nearly as diverse as the American average, including Boise, Bellevue and Portland.” IT’S ALL ABOUT RELATIONSHIPS–MENTORING IS KEY
As the firm continues to grow, so does the need for partners to invest time in mentoring the firm’s new, diverse lawyers. “That’s where we in management have an important role—to raise the awareness within our partnership of the importance of mentoring and nurturing our diverse attorneys,” Devaney said.

Devaney highlighted the firm’s mentoring program as one of the many formal initiatives in place to nurture and support diverse associates in meaningful ways that allow them to develop successful practices and careers at the firm. “Being a lawyer at this firm, or any other big firm, you’re so busy and you’re juggling so many different things that it’s easy to just forget about mentoring. There’s no bad intent, but there’s only so much you can handle,” he said. “Sometimes, unless you have people pushing on you and saying you need to care about this and you need to pay attention to it, it’s not going to happen. It’s important for us to keep that consciousness going and make partners aware of the importance of mentoring so they’re thinking about it.” Awareness of the importance of developing relationships is also a key to success for diverse associates. Devaney’s own path to a successful practice was carved from relationship building. “It’s all about relationships and bonding with your colleagues and partners in the firm and finding some commonality with them so that it becomes more natural for them to look for opportunities for you,” Devaney said. “I encourage our diverse associates and partners to really get out there and spend time with colleagues.” In advancing diversity and inclusion at Perkins Coie, success is incremental. “There’s not going to be one eureka moment,” Devaney said. “But if there’s sustained improvement every year and you can look back in 2016 and say: In 2015, we really stepped it up; we did better. We got more diverse lawyers into leadership roles at the firm. We hired more diverse lateral partners than we did last year. We recruited more associates who are diverse. Even if the numbers aren’t huge, we’re recognizing that the trajectory is right and that we’re on a better path. To me, that’s success.”
ALL WOMEN LAWYERS’ RETREAT SPOTLIGHT WORKING CLOSELY WITH leaders of the Perkins Coie Women’s Forum, the firm’s Diversity Department presented an inspiring All Women Lawyers’ Retreat April 24-26, 2014 in Carlsbad, California. The Women’s Forum is a longstanding affinity group that works to attract, retain and promote women in the firm and to provide leadership and support on issues that impact women in the legal profession.
In keeping with the retreat’s theme of Inspire Ourselves, Empower Each Other, more than 200 (70 percent) of Perkins Coie’s women associates, counsel, partners and patent agents from around the United States and Asia turned out for three days of business development programs, interactive workshops and networking— combined with fun. “The All Women Lawyers’ Retreat is designed to offer a powerful vehicle for all of us to learn from each other, to connect with each other, to build relationships and to have our voices heard,” said Jeanne Cullen, a partner in the firm’s Chicago office who serves as chair of the Women’s Forum. In addition to the unique opportunity to gather in one place for career empowerment and comradery, the attendees were able to interact in a more relaxed environment with Perkins Coie clients and former clients such as UPS Chief Legal Officer Teri McClure and New York Public Library General Counsel Michele Coleman Mayes, the retreat’s featured guest speakers. Chairs of the firm’s practice groups and subgroups also attended the retreat, where they led discussions with attendees on success strategies, advancing in their practice areas and ways to better develop and retain women lawyers. The agenda also built in time for participants to collectively identify recommendations for improving practice groups and subgroups for all of the firm’s lawyers.
External speakers included Vernā Myers, a nationally recognized expert in diversity issues within law firms and other legal settings, Janice Brown of Beyond Law Group, and law professor Lynn Cohn, the Director of the Center on Negotiation and Mediation at Northwestern Law School. The high-level consultants presented sessions on topics such as Building a Successful Career at the Firm, Building Your Practice to Achieve Success, Taking Charge of Your Career, The Art of Asking: Getting Outside Your Comfort Zone, and Getting What She Wants—key negotiation strategies. Speakers from the firm who shared their experiences and expertise with attendees included: Alex Cole, Sarah Crooks, Theresa Cropper, Jessica EverettGarcia, Judy Gold, Tanya Henderson, Jade Lambert, Selena Linde, Julia Markley, Cori Gordon Moore, Molly Moynihan, Lucy Park, Teresa Tate, Michelle Umberger, Linda Walton, and Nancy Williams. Women at Perkins Coie make up 32 percent of all lawyers, 45 percent of associates and counsel and 21 percent of the partnership. Women hold 24 of the leadership positions at the firm—a number that distinguishes Perkins Coie and the Women’s Forum as a leader among our peers. The notable success of the 2014 All Women Lawyers’ Retreat, which set an all-time attendance high for the biennial event, contributed to the Women’s Forum receiving Perkins Coie’s inaugural Diversity Champions Team Award. “[This year’s] All Women Lawyers’ Retreat offered the best content we’ve ever had,” Portland partner Danielle Benderly said as she headed for a homebound shuttle at the close of the three-day retreat in Southern California. “We all go back to our offices with renewed vigor to make things better and make a difference.”

2014 AFFINITY GROUP HIGHLIGHTS South Asian/Middle Eastern In 2014, the South Asian/Middle Eastern Affinity Group appointed new co-chairs Partner Vivek Chopra and Counsel K.M. Das. With a focus of cross-selling and building community, the group’s new leadership will continue to build its base and identify and develop programs designed to keep members engaged.
Asian Pacific Islander Through its local office representatives, the Asian Pacific Islander (API) Affinity Group encouraged Perkins Coie offices to host programming to celebrate Asian Pacific American (APA) Heritage Month in May. Various offices participated in the celebration and held in-office programs, dinners and events to celebrate APA Heritage Month. The API Affinity Group co-hosted an APA Heritage Month event with the Seattle Diversity Committee on July 29 as part of its celebrations. The evening featured Justice Mary Yu. Appointed in May 2014, Justice Yu is the first Asian-American, first Latina-American, and first LGBT member on the Washington Supreme Court. Justice Yu shared her story and career advice for success, including the importance of mentorship, engagement and taking risks. The API and South Asian/Middle Eastern Affinity Groups also hosted an annual API In-House Counsel event on August 26 designed to provide opportunities for API members to build and strengthen relationships with in-house counsel and several clients were invited to join group members at a suite at a Seattle Mariners game. NAPABA Recognized Perkins Coie with Its 2014 Law Firm Diversity Award — On November 6-9, API Affinity Group members joined 1,500 attendees at the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association’s 26th Annual Convention. Perkins Coie led several networking and business development events at the convention, including its second annual Microsoft client dinner. Microsoft Associate General Counsel Isabella Fu and eight of her colleagues attended the dinner. During the convention, a LGBT reception honoring U.S. District Judge Pamela Chen of the Eastern District of New York and a partner in-house counsel dinner were also hosted by Perkins Coie.
Lawyers with Disabilities On March 13, the Lawyers with Disabilities Affinity Group and the Seattle Diversity Committee hosted a celebration of the one-year anniversary of the firm’s signing the American Bar Association’s Pledge for Change regarding disability diversity in the legal profession. The Washington Attorneys with Disabilities Association was a co-sponsor of the program.

The call was conducted on the request of Wisconsin State Judge Carl Ashley, who chairs the Task Force.

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT)
Women’s Initiatives
The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Affinity Group and the Seattle office hosted the Fourth Annual Perkins Pride event in Seattle on June 26. With a focus on creating business development opportunities, the group collaborated with StartOut, a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating great business leaders by fostering LGBT entrepreneurs. The keynote speaker was Conor Madigan, President and Co-founder of Kateeva, a OLED display company. Madigan shared his experience growing a successful company as an LGBT entrepreneur. Over 200 people attended the event, including representatives from clients Microsoft, Boeing, T-Mobile and Russell Investments.
Karen McGaffey, Management Committee Member, traveled to various offices to meet with women partners. McGaffey provided insight into how the firm’s statistical credit system is used in the partner compensation process, factors to consider to ensure a fair allocation of credit and ways to deal with concerns that credit may not have been appropriately allocated.
African American/Black Associate Truscenialyn Brooks and Partners Dennis Hopkins and Linda Walton, members of the African American/Black Affinity Group, attended the 89th Annual National Bar Association (NBA) Convention July 26 to August 1 in Atlanta. The NBA is the nation’s largest and oldest association of African-American lawyers and judges. The convention provides educational sessions and opportunities for attendees to make connections throughout the legal community. The convention, themed “Standing Our Ground for Justice,” set the tone for an informative convention. Attendees were able to build their networks and attend a variety of specialized seminars and workshops.
In conjunction with the Women’s Forum, the Partner Compensation Committee facilitated a diversity discussion on gender equity gap in their scheduled committee call on August 14. Stephanie Scharf, the former president of the National Association of Women Lawyers and current partner at Scharf Banks Marmor LLC, was invited to present on the current status of the gender equity gap in the legal industry. On October 6, the Women’s Forum hosted a presentation, “Best Practices for Drafting Partner Compensation Self-Evaluation Memos,” for all women partners, which featured gender expert Karen Kahn. The presentation took place in the Chicago office and was streamed to all other offices and later shared with all of the firm’s partners.

NATIONAL PROGRAMMING STRENGTHENING THE PIPELINE THE DIVERSITY DEPARTMENT hosted its second annual 1L Summer
Associate Retreat in Seattle June 17-18. The retreat was designed to help prepare and equip first-year law students with the tools necessary to be successful at Perkins Coie. Programming highlights included a keynote address with U.S. District Judge Richard Jones of the Western District of Washington. There were also success tips from former 1L summer associates, sessions on the traits and attributes of successful lawyers and sessions with practice groups representatives.

In July, Theresa Cropper, Chief Diversity Officer, hosted the annual in-office lunch for the 2014 American Bar Foundation (ABF) Fellows. The luncheon provided an opportunity for the fellows to ask questions and have an organic conversation about law school, diversity and the practice of law. The ABF is dedicated to advancing justice through rigorous research laws, legal processes, and the law’s impact on society. Perkins Coie continued our long-standing partnership with Just the Beginning–A Pipeline Organization (JTB-APO), a nonprofit organization that offers pipeline programs directly aimed at inspiring young students and increasing diversity in the legal profession and judiciary.

National Programming
Each summer, Theresa Cropper facilitates a business etiquette course for JTB-APO Summer Legal Institute program (SLI). The SLI is a two-week intensive program designed to expose students to the practice of law and prepare students for success. The business etiquette session provides an opportunity for students to develop their networking and communications skills and practice a “30-second” elevator speech. After the session, students attend an in-office reception at Perkins Coie, designed to provide an opportunity for them to utilize their newly learned skills by interacting with the firm’s lawyers, staff and members of the legal community. In Washington, D.C., the firm hosted 50 high school students and their family members on July 10, and the Chicago office hosted 90 students and family members on July 23. In March, Perkins Coie was the title sponsor of the National Black Law Students Association’s (NBLSA) 46th Annual Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Partners Bruce Dick, Richard Ross, Tom Lindley and Cori Gordon Moore, Director of Recruiting and Retention Mike Gotham and Chief Diversity Officer Theresa Cropper were panelists and speakers at the convention. The firm sponsored and organized “Careers on the Horizon: Energy and Environmental Law” and “Career Paths—Doing The Deal: The Transaction Side of Practicing Law” panels. The firm also conducted informational interviews and hosted a small informal reception for 1L students. Associates Truscenialyn Brooks and Jeffrey Walker, Senior Diversity Manager Tanya Johnson and Diversity Coordinator Faith Nunley also attended the convention. In June 2014, the Portland office hosted an informational planning lunch for NBLSA’ s upcoming 2015 Convention in Portland. Working in collaboration with lawyers in the Portland office and NBLSA board members, the firm invited members of the community—from the Office of the Governor to representatives from other Portland law firms—to learn about NBLSA, the annual national convention and how they could support the organization. In November, the firm hosted a luncheon at Harvard Law School for members of the Harvard Black Law Students Association. The luncheon was designed to provide information and expose attendees to the political law practice area. Partner Marc Elias led the discussion with the group and provided insight into the firm’s political law practice. Chief Diversity Officer Theresa Cropper and Senior Diversity Manager Tanya Johnson also attended the event.

FIRMWIDE DIVERSITY TRAINING AND EDUCATION In June, the Diversity Department held an advanced diversity education session for members of the Executive Committee and key stakeholders at the firm. The program was facilitated by diversity consultant and author Vernā Myers, Founder and President of Vernā Myers Consulting Group. This four-hour program was specifically designed to build upon previous diversity training sessions, while introducing new and strategic content to participants’ discussion regarding diversity at Perkins Coie. The program provided an assessment of where we are as a firm with diversity and inclusion, a discussion on accomplishing inclusion through cultural competency and a brainstorming session on redesigning our systems and practices where needed. In August, the Diversity Department hosted a conference call for associates and counsel with key members. The call was created to provide attendees with an inside perspective on the firm’s associate/counsel evaluation process. The discussion featured current and former Associate Evaluation Committee
members Partners Matt Gray, Teri Lindquist, Jose Lopez, Richard Ross and Deborah Phillips, Evaluation Committee Chair. The focus provided best practices and tips on how to write a self-evaluation, how to prepare for a debriefing meeting and insight into what happens during the associate and counsel review meeting. In September, the Diversity Department hosted a specialized diversity training session for members of the Partner Compensation Committee at the Partner Planning Conference in New York. Diversity consultant Vernā Myers facilitated the training. The training was designed to provide education and discussion on various diversity concepts, issues and implicit biases that committee members may encounter in their roles on firm committees. In addition, Myers conducted training for firm leadership, including members of the Executive Committee, Management Committee, Associate Evaluation Committee, and Partner Compensation Committee, as well as for hiring partners.
MOVING DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION FORWARD BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS ACROSS DIFFERENCE A Word From Our Diversity Expert, Vernā Meyers
AS A CONSULTANT, I spend a lot of time on airplanes, chatting with strangers. Often people will ask me what I do for a living, and when I say that I am a diversity consultant and my company helps organizations and communities create more inclusive, respectful and fair environments, they say one of two things:
Either, “Can you come to my organization, because we could really use your help?” Or, “You will always have a job.”

As a professional in the field for 18 years, I think a great deal about what it takes to move diversity and inclusion forward. In my work within corporations and law firms, I encounter many wellmeaning people who believe in the merits of diversity and are deeply committed to fairness. Very few of these individuals, if any, are consciously malicious or create impediments intentionally. And yet, at my company, we have spent thousands of hours listening to the stories of pain and frustration of people of color, women, LGBT individuals, and individuals from different nationalities and religions trying to survive the small slights and the larger but subtle exclusions of opportunity in their workplaces. In the workplace, I have seen policies change for the better, but the reality of who feels valued and included and who remains and advances in our law firms isn’t changing very quickly. What will allow us to substantially change the demographic landscape so that our law firms will be able to face the changing world with the talent, perspectives, creativity, and networks they need to perform well in the marketplace and represent their clients with excellence? I am convinced that we do not lack commitment to the high

principles of fairness and equity. What we lack instead is the ability to recognize, understand and appreciate differences and how those differences require our organizations and the individuals in them to change. Despite our good intentions, many of us lack the confidence, competence and comfort to build relationships across difference. Attorneys of every background come to law firms wanting to believe that the firm values who they are and the differences they bring to the table. In particular, newer generations are not willing to cover or conceal important aspects of their identity. They are looking for firms that are culturally competent—that have the ability to see and appreciate difference and the skill to adapt behavior to create resolutions that enhance outcomes for the organization and the individual. But as proven by numerous social science studies and borne out by what I have seen in many law firms is a preference for sameness, not difference. Even our brain is conspiring against us, sorting everyone we meet unconsciously into “in-groups = like me” and “out-groups = not like me.” We then behave accordingly before we even know what we have done. In order to create more inclusive environments where people of all backgrounds can bring their best, we all must work harder on increasing our cultural competency and developing culturally effective habits.
10 actions to move us closer to understanding and getting comfortable with building genuine relationships across difference: 1 Ask someone who is different from you to coffee or tea. Make sure you spend time listening to what the person is saying and share something about yourself. It’s not an inquisition. You don’t need to go into deep conversations. You are exchanging information and getting to know each other.
2 Invite people to dinner or drinks near work or at your home. Connecting outside of work shows you are interested and want to invest some personal time. In the pressure-filled world lawyers live in, this sends a strong message that you value an individual.
3 Put yourself in situations where you are in the minority. Go to

8 Avoid In-group favoritism. When you are interviewing, making assignments, assembling teams, or distributing tasks, be mindful of how you make selections. Are you applying criteria fairly or going with your “gut instincts.” Social scientists say that our “guts” are actually contaminated by our implicit biases. Look more closely before making your selection.
4 Think about who you have mentored or sponsored in your career and who your friends are at work. What can people tell about you by your associations? Do you appear to be open to difference, or does your circle convey exclusion of certain groups?
9 If you are a person of influence in the firm, decide that before

10 Learn to apologize if you make a mistake while remaining engaged. When we decide to develop relationships across difference, we will at some point do or say something that we wished we had not. But it is not the end of the world if we are willing to acknowledge the impact of the mistake and learn from it.
6 Recognize good work. Sometimes we get so busy and our jobs are so demanding that we forget to tell people when they have done a fine job or what we like about their work. When we are specific, it shows we are paying attention, and such recognition and encouragement develops a bond. Critical feedback is important, too. Don’t avoid it. When given with the motivation of helping a person develop, it is appreciated.

What inspired or motivated you to pursue your practice area? I am drawn to a transactional practice because it’s usually a “win/win” situation. Company A wants to sell and Company B wants to buy—so both parties have an interest in making sure the transaction gets done. Although there are definitely negotiations on business terms (which can lead to strong disagreements between the parties), it is by nature a collaborative process because both parties want to get to the same end result. What would your colleagues be surprised to learn about you? I was born on Hinamatsuri (known as “Girls’ Day”), which is a special day in Japan. My grandmother used to always tell me that meant I was special, and that I would grow up to be the perfect Japanese woman. She stopped saying that after I came home from college one time with my hair dyed blonde. What was the best professional advice you ever received? The best professional advice I received with regard to the start of my career was to focus only on the things I can control. If I was available, hardworking and did my absolute best, the rest would fall into place. The best professional advice I received with regard to maintaining my sanity over the course of my career (so far) was to be myself. It’s entirely too exhausting to act like the person others think you should be.

I absolutely love music, attend as many live music shows as I can, and love to support the local music scene. However, I can’t play a musical instrument or carry a tune to save my life! (But my kids can, so I truly enjoy watching them perform!) What was the best professional advice you ever received? To sweat the small stuff. What inspired or motivated you to pursue your practice area? I was an electrical engineering major in college. Although I loved my engineering classes, I also really enjoyed writing and analyzing ideas (I was a Russian literature minor). I interned at a power electronics company, and my manager asked me to analyze the performance of a current driver circuit disclosed in a competitor’s recent patent. That was my first exposure to patent law. It seemed like an ideal blend of technology and critical analysis, and I went to law school with the intention of practicing in that area. For me, patent litigation has continued to be that great blend—I’m constantly learning about new technologies while dealing with an interesting and fast-moving area of law. What would your colleagues be surprised to learn about you? Both of my daughters are named after scientist-inventors. What was the best professional advice you ever received? Make sure you really understand the client’s true objective and exposure in any matter. There are usually business motivations in play that are divorced from the legal issues we tend to focus on as litigators, and the business side often controls. Also, understand (and frequently re-evaluate) your personal definition of success.

Dennis has been a champion of diversity since joining the firm in 2012, being a role model, cultivating diverse teams, establishing a pipeline of diversity initiatives and providing external leadership involvement. Active on internal and external diversity committees, Dennis engages Perkins Coie’s summer associates by inviting them to attend diversity events to strengthen their networking skills and provides them with a better understanding of Perkins Coie’s culture. Dennis encourages attorneys in the New York office to explore diversity-related issues by organizing diversity-related events and supporting junior lawyers’ efforts to organize such events. Dennis’s representation of Perkins Coie within local New York diversity groups has earned numerous accolades personally and on behalf of the firm. Dennis was awarded the 2014 Council of Urban Professionals Award recognizing diversity among high-level minority professionals. The firm was awarded the 2014 Asian American Bar Association of New York Law Firm Diversity Award in large part to Dennis’s crafting of our submission. As a former U.S. Army attack helicopter platoon leader, Dennis understood the issues Fordham Law University Veterans Affinity group “SERV” was facing and spearheaded a well-attended reception at the New York office raising awareness for the need to hire veterans within law firms. Other Perkins Coie veteran attorneys plan to host similar events in their respective offices in 2015. You are credited with helping the New York office be and feel inclusive to both attorneys and staff. How important is inclusion to the culture of Perkins Coie? Inclusion and promotion of diverse attorneys are extremely important to firm culture. Partners, associates and staff who know they are valued become stakeholders in the firm, its goals and its success. So it is very important to make sure that everyone is included and everyone is valued. This key part of our firm culture, for which we are frequently recognized, is one of the things that sets us apart from other firms.
Your colleagues credit your external diversity work and leadership roles with increasing the presence and reputation of Perkins Coie in New York. In your opinion, how does diversity drive excellence? Ensuring the inclusion and promotion of diverse attorneys is a very important goal in the New York legal community for both law firms and companies alike. This is something clients want to see and that impacts how we do business. It ensures we bring the highest level of talent into the firm and affords us an opportunity to perform our responsibilities as good corporate citizens. It is no coincidence that Perkins and its attorneys have been recognized and honored as a firm with unparalleled diversity initiatives. There is no downside to this—diversity enhances excellence. A diverse workforce brings with it diverse, creative and robust ideas and decisionmaking. As we enhance diversity at the firm, we enrich the work product that we can offer. Mentoring others was cited as a key part of why you exemplify a Diversity Champion. What is key about diversity and developing others? It is crucial for associates to have access to multiple mentors for multiple purposes. Often diverse attorneys approach me not only for career advice or guidance, but for advice related to my experiences as an attorney of color. Any successful attorney can be a good mentor; sometimes diverse attorneys have unique experiences to draw upon which can be helpful to other diverse attorneys. I make it a point to let our firm’s diverse attorneys know I am available to mentor and guide them. Of course, I am happy to mentor any junior attorney who can benefit from my experience and perspective. I encourage other attorneys at the firm to do the same. It benefits us all.

Dina coaches attorneys at various stages of positive transition or change. Her career transitions include joining Perkins Coie as a lateral labor and employment associate and being among the first lawyers in Portland to work a reduced-hours schedule. She realigned her focus to attorney development and retention after five years of practicing with Perkins Coie. Dina’s nominators say she constantly works behind the scenes promoting the development of diverse attorneys, including women, and quietly influences others to make the firm and the Portland office a more inclusive place. Dina’s quiet input has tremendous influence; she has an uncanny knack for influencing key people to do something good. From lining up effective support for associates to brainstorming large-scale attorney development initiatives, Dina impacts diversity on both the micro and macro scales. Your colleagues say you have impacted diversity in the firm in both micro and macro ways. Please describe one micro impact on diversity. As part of my coaching work, I have had the privilege to work with dozens of women lawyers returning from parental leave. Supporting women lawyers as they reintegrate into their practice, while providing a safe place to explore new challenges, is one micro way I have tried to impact diversity. I hope the personalized and individual support I have provided through coaching has enhanced the transition experience for our women lawyers and inspired and empowered them to bring their full selves to work. How can someone described as having a “quiet” leadership style have such an impact on diversity at Perkins Coie? I have tried to impact diversity more through my actions than my words. I have not felt compelled to be loud or outspoken, just authentic and sincere in my commitment to the work. Diversity work has provided a ripe field for my natural inclinations. By offering consistency, dependability, responsiveness and, most of all, passion for diversity and inclusion, I have

been able to make an impact, which in turn has made my 14 years at the firm all the more rewarding and purposeful. When did diversity and inclusion become part of your tool box? When I started as a lateral labor and employment associate at the firm with a six-month-old baby and one of the first part-time work arrangements in the office, I gravitated towards diversity and inclusion, in large part motivated by my own personal experience. Contributing to diversity and inclusion has allowed me to establish deep connections with colleagues across practice areas, job titles and offices. These connections and relationships have bonded me to the firm all these years and have provided a sense of purpose bigger than myself. You serve on key Perkins Coie committees that enable the macro impact described by your nominators. How important is that to your work? Working in collaboration with fellow colleagues is a key part of my diversity and inclusion work. I have always enjoyed the process of bringing to life ideas generated through group consensus. The impact of group work and broad coalition is powerful. I have been able to contribute on both a micro and macro level and believe the two work in tandem towards achieving our diversity and inclusion goals. How does it feel to be recognized by your peers as a Diversity Champion? I cannot imagine an award I would be more honored to receive. Demonstrating unwavering commitment and taking action towards creating a more diverse and inclusive firm has been part of my Perkins Coie story for as long as I can remember. To be seen and recognized for this work is truly an honor. I am humbled and grateful.

DIVERSITY GLADIATORS DENISE CORCORAN AND BRUCE DICK Getting Down to Business
IF ACTIONS SPEAK louder than words, then the Business practice at Perkins Coie is speaking volumes about making progress in its recruitment, hiring, retention and advancement of diverse lawyers.
“It’s not enough to say you want diversity. You have to keep finding ways to actually accomplish diversity goals,” said Bruce Dick, the Business practice’s personnel partner. The Business practice group, one of the firm’s largest groups, advances diversity and inclusion by taking innovative and strategic approaches that not only focus on the development of the group’s existing diverse associates, but also on the rich pool of diverse talent available in the community. “The way you achieve progress on diversity is often the result of actions at the micro level rather than the macro level,” Bruce said. “Many of the important activities at Perkins Coie are conducted at a practice, rather than a firm, level. Practices do much of the hiring of lawyers. Practices are responsible for training and promoting personnel. If the actions do not take place at the practice level, how will we meet our diversity goals?” ON THE RIGHT TRACK
Bruce, together with Denise Corcoran, Director of Practice Group Services, has teamed with Theresa Cropper and Tanya Johnson in the Diversity Department on a program that tracks the Business practice’s diverse associates and counsel. The program’s goal is to understand the challenges and opportunities of diverse lawyers and to ensure their needs are met through monthly tracking. The program started around the time when Bruce, a partner in the firm’s Bellevue office, was named personnel partner for the Business practice. “One of the things that is really important is continuing to look for opportunities to advance diversity within our group,” Denise said. “For a long time, the Business practice in general was doing a pretty good job on diversity and in some cases we were doing a better job than the firm in some areas, but it wasn’t enough.” What sets Perkins Coie apart is holistically viewing diverse lawyers in categories such as billable hours, clients, firm

citizenship, committee involvement, participation in pitches, prospective clients’ requests for proposals, cross-office work, and comments from supervising attorneys, the Associate and Counsel Evaluation Committee and partnership prospects. Bruce, Denise, Theresa and Tanya evaluate whether a lawyer needs access to additional opportunities or support in a certain area and, where necessary, create and execute an action plan. The team looks at a combination of data, some anecdotal and some metric, in evaluating the attorneys and their needs. The proactive approach helps the Business practice nurture and support diverse associates and counsel. “We cannot guarantee success. What we are trying to do is guarantee access to opportunities for success for everybody,” Bruce said. “We work to make work opportunities available through inclusion on client project teams, work referrals and, in some cases, reassignment to a subgroup that has the right work opportunities.” “Because it has sometimes been difficult to identify diverse lawyers and bring them into the firm, we wanted to make sure we weren’t losing them on the back side,” Denise said. “By setting a time every month to see how they’re doing—see if they need work, resources, mentoring, training—we are able to make sure we are giving people their best opportunity to move forward.” The tracking program started about five years ago, and as a result over 50 percent of the firm’s Business practice attorneys who were elevated to partner in 2013 and 2014 were diverse. The newly elevated partners included six lawyers of color and four women. IDENTIFYING DIVERSE CANDIDATES
The Business practice recently saw success with a new initiative for lateral partner hiring, first tested with the Chicago office. The group worked with an outside consultant to prepare a robust resource listing of diverse lawyers in the associate and partner ranks at Chicago-area firms. The Chicago office recently added a partner in the Business practice with a focus on the healthcare industry. “We were looking to add breadth and depth in our healthcare transactional practice. By virtue of the list and looking for the prospects who had that background, we identified and hired a great candidate who fit the bill and he happens to be African American,” Bruce said. The firm is adopting that technique as part of its diversity initiatives and is expanding the program focusing on diverse prospects to other markets, including Washington, D.C. and New York.
FINDING THE ATTRIBUTES THAT COUNT
Steering away from a singular focus on traditional associate and counsel hiring metrics such as which law school a candidate attended or the fact that one was on law review, the group looks to add a behavioral interviewing technique to the recruiting and hiring process. With this technique, firms identifies the characteristics of successful lawyers in their groups and use behavioral questions to help determine whether the candidate possesses those desired traits. The aim of a behavioral interview is to learn how candidates have performed in the past in specific situations, by asking questions that often begin with the words, “Tell me about a time” or “Give me an example of a time.” “If you look at diverse associates as a subcategory, maybe they didn’t go to the same law school you went to, or maybe they did. But on the other hand, they may have different life experiences that mean they have some of the very success attributes we are looking for. Through behavioral interviewing we learn about their possessing the desired success factors,” Bruce said. “We believe this technique will help us do a more systematic and hopefully predictive job in our interviews. And we anticipate that it will be of value in our consideration of diverse candidates, by making sure that we are looking at the attributes that truly count.” TOP OF MIND
In the Business practice, leaders work to keep diversity and inclusion top of mind when decisions need to be made, whether the decision involves a committee assignment, attendance at a CLE event or putting together a panel to be featured at a firm retreat. “We think about diversity in many ways,” Denise said. “For it to really work, it has to become second nature. You have to always be conscious of ‘Are we looking at this with a diversity light on it?’” The firm as a whole values diversity and inclusion. But that does not mean its practices can simply look to someone else to make it happen. “Our firm’s culture emphasizes that we’re fair, collegial, help one another and value and foster diversity. The Business practice’s diversity activities are just part and parcel of that. It’s who we are,” Bruce said. “We want to walk the walk, not just talk the talk.”

BLACK HISTORY MONTH CELEBRATION — On February 18, the Seattle Diversity Committee co-hosted a Black History Month Celebration at the University of Washington Law School. The featured speaker of the celebration was Tim Wise, one of the country’s leading anti-racist writers and activists. The Seattle Diversity Committee also hosted an internal Black History Month Celebration featuring King County Councilmember Larry Gossett. LAWYERS WITH DISABILITIES AFFINITY GROUP CELEBRATION — On March 13, the Lawyers with Disabilities Affinity Group and the Seattle Diversity Committee hosted a celebration of the one-year anniversary of the firm’s signing the ABA Pledge for Change regarding disability diversity in the legal profession. The Washington Attorneys with Disabilities Association was a co-sponsor of the program. DINNER WITH AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT-ELECT PAULETTE BROWN

The dinner was held in honor of Ms. Brown’s historical accomplishment and her arrival in Seattle as the guest speaker for the Loren Miller Bar Association. LEADERSHIP COUNCIL ON LEGAL DIVERSITY (LCLD) — On June 23, the Seattle Office co-hosted an LCLD Leadership Lunch. The lunch was co-hosted by Brad Smith, General Counsel of Microsoft, and Seattle Office Managing Partner Fred Rivera. The event was designed to provide advice on professional development and an opportunity to network with preeminent leaders in the legal field. PERKINS PRIDE EVENT — The LGBT Affinity Group and the Seattle office hosted the firm’s fourth annual Perkins Pride event in Seattle on June 26. With a focus on creating business development opportunities, the group collaborated with StartOut and QLaw. StartOut is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to creating great business leaders by fostering gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender entrepreneurs. This year’s keynote speaker was Conor Madigan, President and Co-founder of Kateeva. Over 200 people attended this events including representative from clients Microsoft, Boeing, T-Mobile, and Russell Investments. SOUTH ASIAN BAR ASSOCIATION OF WASHINGTON (SABAW) ANNUAL RECEPTION — On October 3, Perkins Coie attorneys attended SABAW’s Annual Reception. Perkins Community Relations Liaison, Cyrus Habib, was recognized during the event. A NIGHT OF MISCHIEF RECEPTION — On October 16, the Seattle Diversity
Committee hosted a reception for local corporate counsel at Fremont Mischief Distillery. More than 65 Perkins Coie clients, friends and attorneys enjoyed an evening of good conversation and mingling, including counsel from Microsoft, Boeing, Outerwall, Nintendo, Zillow, Edifecs, Big Fish Games, Lockerz, Demand Media and New York Life Insurance Company, among others. IDAHO BUSINESS REVIEW’S WOMEN OF THE YEAR AWARDS DINNER — On February 18, the Boise Diversity Committee sponsored the Idaho Business Review’s Women of the Year Awards Dinner. The Idaho Business Review celebrates Idaho’s most successful women from public, private and charitable business sectors, focusing on the high points and the lessons that have contributed to their unique business experiences. GO LEAD IDAHO —The Boise office has been a leading sponsor of Go Lead Idaho and the Go Lead Idaho’s Gala for a number of years. During the gala on March 13, the Boise office’s table guests included two women clients who own startup companies; the keynote speaker, Kathy Groob (founder of Elect Women, which advocates for more women in senior business positions and encourages women to run for office); and the 12-year-old recipient of an “early leadership award” for her activity petitioning the Idaho Legislature to recognize a particular state reptile and its family. Go Lead Idaho is an organization committed to training, encouraging and supporting local women to become leaders in the community, whether in the private sector or political arena. Counsel Cece Gassner is President of Go Lead Idaho. MONTHLY WOMEN’S LUNCHES — On March 17, the Boise Diversity Committee hosted the first monthly lunch for the women attorneys in the Boise office. Going forward, the women agreed to meet once a month for lunch to foster relationships and discuss issues and topics of importance to them. 2014 ACCESS TO JUSTICE IDAHO CAMPAIGN KICKOFF EVENT — On June 5,

ACCESS TO JUSTICE IDAHO FUND RUN/WALK — The Boise office supported a team of seven people to participate in the Access to Justice Idaho FUND Run/Walk on June 14. All proceeds of the event benefited the Access to Justice Idaho Campaign, including DisAbility Rights Idaho. WOMEN’S WINE TASTING AND SHOPPING EVENT — On December 11, the
Boise Diversity Committee hosted the first of what it hopes to make an annual women’s event. The networking opportunity was aimed at helping women in the community connect with other women professionals. The event was held at the Idaho Botanical Garden and featured three local women-owned businesses, including two of the firm’s pro bono clients. The evening benefitted Dress for Success Boise Valley, a nonprofit providing professional attire and a network of support and career development tools to help disadvantaged women thrive.
WOMEN’S GOLF EVENT — On July 16, the women attorneys of the Chicago office hosted their inaugural Women’s Golf event at the Valley Lo Club in suburban Glenview. The event offered opportunities to connect with clients throughout the day and ended with a dinner and entertainment provided by Chicago comedian Amy Sumpter. B4OCI EVENT — The Chicago office hosted its annual B4OCI panel and in-office reception on August 5. The panel provided insight to Chicago area law students on successfully navigating the on-campus and call-back interview process. Attendees continued the discussions during the reception that immediately followed. THANKSGIVING POTLUCK — The Diversity Committee sponsored its annual Thanksgiving Potluck on November 13. The potluck was well attended and received by staff and attorneys.

THE WOMEN’S FORUM, ESTABLISHED in 2006, works to attract, retain and promote women in the firm and provides leadership and support on issues impacting women attorneys. Led in 2014 by co-chairs, Ellen Dial and Jeanne Cullen, and four subcommittee chairs, the Women’s Forum invites broad participation from women in all offices. Its subcommittees connect the firm’s women attorneys across offices, serve as internal consultants to the firm on women’s issues and provide input and influence in the decision making and leadership appointment processes. The nominators said the Women’s Forum leadership devoted hundreds of hours to create expanded opportunities for career advancement, increase access to firm administration, and train on partner compensation. Not only did they orchestrate the best women’s retreat yet, but their initiatives facilitated effective inter-firm networking and empowered women lawyers to take ownership of their careers. The Women’s Forum’s focus on significant firm issues and advancements enables the firm to compete for and retain the most talented women lawyers, making Perkins Coie competitive in major markets. The nominators stated the Women’s Forum’s impact is not only internal, but external as well. What does that look like? The Women’s Forum having an impact outside the firm speaks to the leadership role Perkins Coie plays in the legal industry. We are encouraged to be innovative, tackle difficult issues, think outside the box, and engage in important discussions with firm management along the way. Through this collaborative approach, we make progress and positive change happen. Perkins Coie’s participation in legal community organizations and conferences allows outside lawyers and consultants in gender diversity to take notice, learn from us, and bring ideas back to their organizations. The Women’s Forum is given credit for leadership development of women in the firm. How important is this aspect of your work? The firm takes seriously the importance of recognizing women as great and essential firm leaders. To that end, many Forum initiatives focus on identifying and providing internal and external leadership training opportunities for its lawyers, as well as initiatives to self-identify for key impact leadership positions, both short-and long-term. Additionally, the Women’s Forum gives women the opportunity to work with other women on leadership issues and challenges, and support other women in developing leadership skills. The work of the Women’s Forum has been described as innovative. How does that innovation impact our diversity and client service goals? The firm is committed to best practices in supporting lawyers in successful careers delivering innovative and excellent client service. Embracing diversity in all of its aspects is much more than the right thing to do. It is one of the most important best business practices, because embracing diversity results in innovative and creative discussions, leading to better outcomes. Innovation in the area of supporting women in their careers translates directly to firm policies embracing diversity in the workplace, and delivery of the best client service. How does it feel to be recognized by your peers for the work you do to promote diversity at Perkins Coie? To be a Diversity Champion? WOMEN’S LUNCH — On February 19, the five women lawyers in the New York office held their inaugural women’s lunch. ARIZONA SUMMIT SCHOOL OF LAW OUTLAW SPONSORSHIP — The Phoenix Diversity Committee sponsored the first meetings of the spring and summer semesters for the LGBT student organization at Arizona Summit School of Law. LANI GUINIER LECTURE — On April 17, the Phoenix Diversity Committee sponsored “A Conversation with Harvard Law School Professor Lani Guinier.” The lecture focused on the lack of diversity in law schools and law firms included a frank discussion of Guinier’s proposal to entirely rethink the law school admissions process. LGBT BAR ASSOCIATION’S INAUGURAL RECEPTION — On June 12, the Phoenix Diversity Committee sponsored and attended the Arizona LGBT Bar Association’s inaugural reception during the 2014 State Bar of Arizona Annual Convention, in Tucson, Arizona. DIVERSITY EVENT — On October 2, the Phoenix Diversity Committee co-sponsored with the ULI Arizona’s Women’s Leadership Initiative an event with Laura Liswood, Secretary General of Council of Women World Leaders and author of The Loudest Duck. Liswood’s work examines challenges to traditional workplace diversity efforts and provides innovative strategies to create effective work environments. Her discussion focused on what organizations can do in order to get beyond talking about diversity to embracing true diversity. SAME-SEX MARRIAGE BAN RULED UNCONSTITUTIONAL CELEBRATION — On October 24, the Phoenix Diversity Committee co-hosted a celebration for the Phoenix office and the LGBT community to celebrate the ruling that Arizona’s same-sex marriage ban is unconstitutional. MARICOPA COUNTY BAR ASSOCIATION MINORITY LEGAL WRITING PROGRAM — In November, the Phoenix office finished the selection
process for its Diversity Writing Intern. The intern program, sponsored by the Maricopa County Bar Association, provides a diverse local law

student the opportunity to work in a participating law firm’s offices two days a week during the spring semester. The Phoenix office’s 2014 intern was Julianne Begay, a Navajo 2L at Arizona State University. In addition, the office hosted a training session on dispositive motions for all of the interns working at law firms throughout the city. LGBT FAMILY LAW INSTITUTE REGIONAL MEETING — On November 8 and 9, the Phoenix office hosted the LGBT Family Law Institute Regional Meeting. Associate Barry Stratford, a member of the Arizona LGBT Bar Association, organized the regional meeting. The LGBT Family Law Institute, a partnership between the LGBT Bar Association and the National Center for Lesbian Rights, promotes equality and justice for members of the LGBT community. QUARTERLY ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION — On December 2, the Phoenix
office hosted its quarterly roundtable discussion. The purpose of these discussions is to foster open and honest dialogue around diversityrelated topics in a nonthreatening environment, and to strengthen understanding, tolerance, support and sense of community. MONTHLY WOMEN’S LUNCHES — The women in the Phoenix office gather monthly for lunch. Topics discussed during the lunches included a preview of the All Women Lawyers’ Retreat with Director of Professional Development Jane Rhee and a presentation from LearnVest, a financial planning startup that focuses on practical, affordable financial advice. This was also a celebration of the election of three new women partners in the Phoenix office. PHOENIX OFFICE’S WOMEN ATTORNEY DINNERS — The Phoenix Diversity Committee hosted its dinner events for women attorneys and women summer associates. The events allow attendees to enrich networks and deepen the community of the Phoenix office. WOMEN’S NETWORKING EVENT — The Portland Diversity Committee hosted its annual women’s networking event on February 27. This event provides opportunities for women lawyers and professionals in the Portland community to connect and build networks. This event is unique in the Portland community, and it has built the reputation of Perkins Coie as a firm that is supportive of the community as well as provides excellent opportunities for women to connect and build relationships. Proceeds from this event benefited the Go Red For Women campaign of the American Heart Association of Oregon & SW Washington. BASIC RIGHTS OREGON (BRO) ANNUAL BUSINESS LEADERS LUNCHEON — On April 17, the Portland office sponsored BRO’s Annual Business Leaders Luncheon. Perkins Coie alumnus Misha Isaak serves on BRO’s legal advisory committee. Isaak and Partner Tom Johnson represented BRO in a significant pro bono matter that recently received a positive ruling. On April 22, Myers led the Second Annual Leadership 360 program with 50 prominent women executives from the Portland business community. Myers also led the office’s quarterly diversity roundtable discussion on cultural effectiveness for lawyers and staff. On October 30, the quarterly roundtable discussion covered the topics of introversion, extroversion and how it manifests in the workplace. The events provided opportunities for participants to have conversations on diversity topics and issues. JEWISH FAMILY & CHILD SERVICE’S CELEBRATING OUR CARING COMMUNITY LUNCHEON — On May 15, the Portland office sponsored the Jewish

NATIONAL ASIAN PACIFIC AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION’S (NAPABA) WESTERN REGIONAL CONFERENCE JUDGES’ RECEPTION — On June 13, the Portland
Diversity Committee hosted the Judges’ Reception, the kick off event of NAPABA’s Western Regional Conference. Conference attendees as well as clients, community members, students and firm lawyers were invited to attend. OREGON ASIAN PACIFIC AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION (OAPABA) — On June 14, the Portland Diversity Committee sponsored and attended the OAPABA Gala Dinner at The Benson Hotel in Portland. The keynote speaker at the gala dinner was the Hon. David M. Louie, Hawaii’s former Attorney General. In addition to sponsoring the dinner, the committee hosted a reception that included opportunities to network with the Oregon legal community. OREGON’S FREEDOM TO MARRY SUCCESS — In celebration of the firm’s
support, led by Perkins Coie alumnus Misha Isaak and Partner Tom Johnson, in challenging the constitutionality of Oregon’s laws excluding same-sex couples from marriage, the Portland Diversity Committee hosted an in-office celebration on June 25. Anniversary Gala for The Center on October 19. The gala was attended by over 800 people and proceeds benefitted more than 40 vital community programs and services at The Center. BLACK HISTORY MONTH LUNCHEON — On February 5, the Washington, D.C. Diversity Committee hosted a lunch and documentary screening to celebrate Black History Month. The documentary, entitled “Black Is... Black Ain’t,” focuses on the debates over Black identity. In addition, the Washington D.C. Diversity Committee previewed a slideshow of great African Americans throughout the day in the office café. BLACK HISTORY MONTH VIDEO CELEBRATION — The Washington, D.C. Diversity Committee continued its celebration of Black History Month through a Connections article on the “Pathway to the Bench” videos, which showcased judges discussing the challenges they faced in coming of age during the civil rights movement and what helped them achieve their success. Also, a link to a short Nelson Mandela documentary was posted on Connections for the entire firm. BLACK HISTORY MONTH PHOTO EXHIBITION — On February 25, the Washington, D.C. Diversity Committee posted a Connections article highlighting a photo exhibition by photographer Eunique Gibson Jones. Jones’ 28-photo project features more than 40 children posing as some of the most iconic and influential black figures from the past and the present. From Harriet Tubman to Spike Lee, the children are seen dressed like the individuals they are portraying in the portraits, which also incorporate inspirational quotes from the civil rights leaders portrayed.
