Scenario
In 2049, San Francisco has tackled housing affordability and transportation challenges, embracing sustainable solutions. However, emerging issues include the impact on jobs from evolving technologies, persistent social inequality, and the need for safe and inclusive public spaces. The city is in need of a dynamic hub to reunite cultures, communities, and individuals.
Goals of the 2049 Library
The authors of ‘Biblioteket i byudviklingen argue that libraries play a significant role in the strategic development of urban areas in three distinct roles related to place, space, and relations. [1] These roles could be related to the 3 scales - interior, building and urban scale, to help define goals at each level.
A Learning Machine
The new library typology operates as a dynamic learning machine, facilitating community education. Functioning as an open-source database, it compiles various types of knowledge data such as text, multimedia content, spatial information etc. evolving alongside expanding data. In this symbiotic process, the library transforms into a learning machine, continuously evolving to meet the needs and interests of its users.

The envisioned library focuses on immersive experiences, leveraging cyber and reality technologies. Visitors have the opportunity to acquire new job-related skills, embark on immersive community tours, and foster connections by engaging with fellow community members.
