Pfau Long Architecture is a member of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and is strongly committed to implementing sustainable design and construction practices. We have recently completed, or are actively engaged in, a number of green building projects, many of which exceed LEED certification standards. We believe the most important aspect of truly sustainable design is working towards creating an appropriate, thoughtful and well-conceived building design which is comfortable, doesn’t waste resources in its construction or use and is designed and built to provide lasting value. This means that we place a major emphasis on understanding the project’s needs and the environmental demands of the site to determine the best design solutions for both. The resultant building is therefore never universal but rather a unique response to the particular place and user.
“We are committed to the role of thoughtful architecture in the creation of a more sustainable future.”

STINSON BEACH RESIDENCE Addition and renovation to a 1968 beach bungalow
Stinson Beach, 20 miles north of San Francisco along the Pacific coast, serves as the setting for a young family’s beach house residence. The site contained an existing, 1,560 square foot “L” shaped bungalow, originally built in 1968. The family desired a larger house that would maintain the character of the 30-year old bungalow while enhancing the existing intimate outdoor room for family and friends to gather. The existing structure was renovated with a new kitchen, bathrooms, storage and general lighting. A new 540 square foot master bedroom and office wing was added to the end of the “L” shaped bungalow and clad in cedar wood siding while a new zinc roof was installed over both old and new wings. The existing and new concrete floor with hydronic heating, was finished with a stain to maintain the character of the existing house while upgrading the color and quality of the finish. The project involved extensive site work using the regional coastal vegetation to complement the sandy site and screen for privacy in the intimate outdoor areas. New entry gates, fences, and an integral color concrete fire pit were added.

SKELLENGER LANE Private Napa compound overlooking surrounding vineyards.
Nestled among vineyards in all directions, with spectacular views of mountain ranges beyond, this new family retreat creates a relaxing destination in Northern California. Spanning over four acres, the compound comprises a main house, guest house, and pool house served by a garage, pump house, garden shed/ceramic studio and bicycle and kayak storage building. The client desired a timeless and elegant family retreat that fosters an active indooroutdoor lifestyle appropriate to the site’s mild climate and picturesque setting. The design is a modern take on the local vernacular. With a nod to the agricultural past, the structures are simple barn-like volumes crafted of wood and steel with crisp, minimal detailing. Large operable openings punctuate the volumes and create a strong connection to the landscape and a variety of outdoor living spaces, celebrating this spectacular setting. Outdoor living spaces complement those inside the house. An outdoor dining area shares a back-to-back concrete fireplace with the living room which is connected to the dining room and kitchen. At the opposite end of the house, the family common area opens onto an outdoor porch with a built-in concrete ping pong table that can double as a large outdoor eating surface. Large, glass pocket doors open to connect the ping pong patio, rear main patio and dining patio to the indoor spaces. The landscape design further unites the interior spaces with the vineyards and mountains beyond. The plantings echo the geometric rows of the vineyards with more colorful and fragrant bands of planting closer to the house.

PEBBLE BEACH HOUSE A custom house with striking views of Monterey Bay and the Pacific
Renowned for its world class golf resort and incredible coastline landscape, Pebble Beach provides the stunning backdrop for a California family’s second home. The site is nestled among trees and overlooks Cypress Point, offering views of the famous golf course, Monterey Bay, and the Pacific Ocean beyond. Originally in construction as a spec-house, Pfau Long Architecture was hired to redesign the residence. The client desired a modern home that would exist harmoniously with its environment - the undulating landscape and the ocean. The home’s design is inspired by the mission-style architecture prevalent in the area. Each material for the house was carefully chosen to harmonize with that natural palette of the site and with each other. While these materials connect with many of the materials used in the area, each is employed in a simple, refined and elemental manner. Materials were particularly selected for their tactile and emotional qualities, with the intent to create a house that was comfortable, casual and soothing to the spirit. The resulting palette is rich yet understated - custom plaster and stucco, natural and bleached mahogany, white oak, limestone, and granite. spaces to the striking views of the coast beyond. These “views through” to the dramatic scenery are revealed the moment one enters the house.

SAN ANSELMO RESIDENCE The renovation and addition of a 1950’s hillside home.
This project for an architect’s home involves a major renovation to an existing 1950’s modern home on a 1.4 acre wooded hilltop site in Marin County. The original structure, possibly designed by the Bay Area Modernist Henry Hill, had floor to ceiling glass walls, anchored by a system of ashlar masonry walls. Expanded to 2,800 feet, the character of the original structure is updated and expanded, and the building is transformed into a low-energy use, green building. The existing building footprint and slab are reused in part of the house, while a new wing is added for an additional two bedrooms and an updated kitchen/family room. The system of existing masonry walls is carefully kept and complimented by new masonry elements that visually anchor the new wing. The new kitchen acts as the fulcrum for the house being open to both the family room and the dining living area in the old footprint. Relying on the simple clarity of its design, all of the structure is exposed, including painted steel beams, gluluam beams and vertical grain Douglas Fir panels. New floor to ceiling insulated glass provides unobstructed views between the masonry elements and the home’s resulting transparency creates the illusion of boundless space where the outdoors are an extension of the indoor experience. The massing is carefully integrated into the varied levels of the ridge top topography and incorporates extensive native and low water landscaping. Numerous sustainable design elements are incorporated such as; photo-voltaic panels, solar domestic/ hydronic heating, solar pool heating, gray water system, insulation using recycled blue jeans. low-E insulated glazing, low albido roof membrane, post-consumer products, high fly ash concrete, and FSC-certified wood.

MILL VALLEY RESIDENCE Addition and renovation to a Mill Valley cottage.
Formerly a one-bedroom cabin in the wooded enclave of Mill Valley, this rustic cottage more than doubled in size after a renovation and addition. The modern transformation of a pitched-roof cabin into a contemporary home for a family included taking the original cottage structure down to the studs and creating a large great room with a cathedral like ceiling and windows. A long, narrow addition turns off the original cottage structure housing two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a powder room and a media room. Natural materials such as cedar, board-formed concrete and zinc help integrate the structure into the surrounding environment which includes huge redwood trees traversed by a creek with Mount Tamalpais in the background.

BOHEMIAN PRESERVE Wildlife preserve and private residence.
This project is a new residence, pool and underground garage on hilltop on a 450-acre site near Occidental, California. The majority of the site is preserved in agreement with the Sonoma Land trust and shared with the non-profit Landpaths organization as part of a community trails and outdoor education resource. The site of the new residence had been disturbed by past uses, and this hilltop area is being restored with native vegetation and landforms as part of the project. The residence is carefully sited on the hilltop to use the natural shade of mature oaks to minimize the summer heat gain, but also to capture views to the different character of the site all around it. Its’ form is a very long gable roof structure that has a strong but simple presence on the hilltop. It is designed to efficiently provide all the needs of both family, and guests to the site, all in one volume. This volume has to large open-air passages all the way through the volume or “dog trots”. These serve to differentiate the bedrooms from the main living volume, but also delineate the main entry in one and a larger covered place for outdoor gathering or ping pong in the other. In the middle of the two “dog trots” is the common volume, were everyone comes together. This commons area has windows, doors and bug screens that all slide into the wall, allowing the entire volume to be totally open to the site around it on nice days. While a centrally located four sited glass fireplace object provides warmth on the cold and foggy days. The two ends of the gabled roof form are the guest area, with a communal bathroom/mudroom and two bedrooms, while on the
other end is the Master bedroom. The materials of this house reflect the visual warmth of natural wood on the inside, while a darker wood on the outside harmonizes with the bark of the trees around it. The client is an environmental educator, so particular attention was paid to all aspects of sustainability with an eye towards achieving as many pedals as possible for the living building challenge. The site has a planned photo-voltaic field for on-site power generation and provides water for irrigation from grey-water and on-site water management from wells and retention ponds. The structure uses “passive Haus” standards for a highly insulated home, natural ventilation and air to water heat pumps with hydronic slabs for heating. Wood harvested from the site has been used for the interior surfaces of the house.

SAN RAFAEL RESIDENCE New residential compound offers an artist studio, pool, and vegetable garden.
This project is a new ground up compound for an artist and family on a hilltop in San Rafael. The 1.4-acre site has views to the Marin Civic Center and Richardson Bay beyond. There are beautiful mature oaks on the site and we made sure to fit the client’s program needs around and underneath the oaks. Our design features a two-story house that tucks under the trees and there is also a dedicated artist studio with a saw-tooth roof form to wash the space with beneficial north light. The garage structure, a swimming pool, a vegetable garden, fruit trees and ample casual outdoor hanging out spaces enhance the site.

ART FOUNDATION AND PHOTO STUDIO Urban live/work studio.
As an outgrowth of the clients’ keen involvement with their work and the local arts community, the program is developed as a live/work on the scale of the single family dwelling. The building is conceived of as a ‘basic living’ space captured by the surrounding landscape. Within the boundaries of the 25 ft by 100 ft lot, gardens are developed which conceptually cover the entire site with the volume of the building inserted in the middle. A plastic unity between interior and exterior space is realized at both ends, separated only by variable transparent wood and glass architectural membranes. Heightening this unity, an earthy pallet of expressive wood structural assemblies and integrally colored concrete masonry bearing walls extend and join interior and exterior space. The main volume provides all living, eating, bathing and sleeping needs simultaneously with the office and interactive needs of a nonprofit arts foundation. Practical programmatic elements and activities are gathered to one side and stretched out along the length of the building, thereby allowing the main volume to operate as a flexible and transformable space.

SAUSALITO RESIDENCE A modern hillside home for a growing family.
This new modern hillside home was designed in response to the needs of a growing family with two work-at-home parents and its steep site with magnificent bay and City views, all within the context of a quiet Sausalito neighborhood setting. The aesthetic of the house is inspired by the Second Bay Region Tradition and expressed through the use of exposed wood structure, and simple, natural materials such as cedar siding and structural elements, stone, pigmented concrete, copper, and steel. The house is terraced down the sloped site to minimize the need for excessive cutting and filling, which consequently positions a good portion of the bulk of the house out of the view of most neighbors. Additionally, two siding patterns - a wider, darker cedar board and a narrower, lighter cedar board - help modulate the skin of the house, creating interest with a natural and subtle palette. The multi-level design also allows for a series of experiences as one proceeds down varied garden steps into the backyard below. The Master Suite is located on the uppermost level, to capture the breathtaking views of the San Francisco skyline, while the open plan of the Main Living functions occur on the street level, providing the family with a strong connection to the neighborhood and to the bay views while they engage in day-to-day activities. Children’s bedrooms and play areas are located on the lowest level, closest to the garden so that outdoor play is easily accessible. The home is finished with the finest selection of high quality furnishings and art.

SOBRE VISTA Family retreat in idyllic setting offers lake views and access.
This new residence is located in the scenic foothills near Glen Ellen offering stunning views to a small lake and the hills beyond. Our client wanted to create a weekend retreat for the family that is relaxed, simple and takes advantage of the best features on their 8 acre property. The new residence is located on a natural bluff overlooking the vineyard and the lake beyond. Our design encompasses the pool and situates everyday outdoor living spaces near it for ease of access. The design also creates a journey to the newly created lakeside “beach area” with fruit trees and recreation activities like a bocce court. The three volumes of the residence reflect three distinct program pieces, the shared communal volume and the two separate “sleeping” volumes on either side, one for guests and the other for the master bedroom. These volumes are carefully positioned to maximize the possible indoor-outdoor relationships and to nestle around existing trees. The house opens up to the views on the south east side with large overhangs providing sun protection, while the entry side to road is purposely more opaque. The exterior siding will be recycled wood siding to add to the informal and relaxed character of the Sobre Vista experience.

WINE COUNTRY RETREAT A seasonal retreat for relaxation and entertaining.
Located just above the Silverado Trail in Napa County, California the home’s design developed in response to two different desires by the owner: the desire for retreat, privacy and intimacy (owner travels frequently and ‘re-energizes’ by coming up to Napa), and the desire for an elegant place to entertain friends. The home responds to its rural surroundings in its straightforward siting, simple materials, and integration of indoor and outdoor living. Hovering cedar wood clad boxes are anchored by a lower main volume of cement stucco. A plunge pool at the end of the living space is the perfect foreground to the stunning panoramic views of the Napa Valley beyond. Anchored by a glass stair volume, the Media/ Wine Room floats above the entry to the house, and is sectionally suspended between Living and sleeping levels within the house. Site amenities include a detached garage and guest house, large jacuzzi and outdoor shower, a 5,000-bottle wine cellar, and a few carefully placed tent cabins for truly ‘roughing it’. The home is nestled into the hillside, and with its naturally weathering materials, is intended to eventually blend in with the natural palette of the hillside as seen from the Silverado Trail below. Each volume of the program has been carefully situated in order to provide the best views of the Napa Valley. The main living spaces can be opened up, with multiple sliding doors, for a fluid indoor outdoor transition – providing plenty of room for al fresco entertaining (into the wee hours of the night). A flowing water wall at the end of the living space offers a gentle masking sound to road noise on the Silverado trail below.
Natural, simple weathering materials work to compliment its natural surroundings. The steep rocky site provided an opportunity for the blurring of the boundaries between the natural landscape and built form. As such, the home has been “slipped” into the hillside, emerging from the rock here and gently touching it there. Volumes of the house cluster around a tree-like glass stair volume that vertically organizes the house. Cedar wood rain screen clad boxes connote the living volumes above, hovering on top of the main living volumes below, which modulate large open glass walls and rock colored cement plaster in relation to view. The Media/Wine Room volume floats above the entry to the house, visually supported by only two tiny diagonal columns, defining the entry below between to the stair volume and the natural rock face.
