BA RT S M ATE R N IT Y S E RV I CE & W E LLB E I N G H U B S , LONDON Healthcare refurbishment, 5500sqm, Barts Health NHS Foundation Trust Whipps Cross Hospital The complete remodelling of the Maternity and Neonatal unit at Whipps Cross Hospital transformed services for users of the facility and provided additional capacity to allow the service to cope with the anticipated increase in birth rates over the next 10 years. Following rationalisation of the spatial layout and a completely new interior design scheme, all departments involved - Women’s centre, antenatal clinic, birthing unit, labour ward, Special Care Baby Unit and postnatal ward - offers light, airy spaces with warm, natural finishes creating a welcoming, homely ambience. The project involves building services upgrades and acoustic improvements, to ensure the resulting environment provides patients with a comfortable space in which to receive care. Sonnemann Toon Architects were involved from early clinical planning through intricate phasing strategies, to piloting the scheme on site.

ROYA L LO N D O N H O S PITA L The refurbishment of a theatre suite and adjacent ward. An ultra clean ventilation canopy was installed in the theatre allowing an entire operating team and all their instrument tables to be accommodated beneath the canopy zone. The finishes scheme in both the theatre and ward areas was selected to correspond with the existing adjacent areas of the Hospital to create a seamless transition and continue the clean modern appearance. The Midwife led birth centre is formed of two birthing suites, both with a large plumbed-in birthing pool, two delivery rooms, three post-natal rooms and three low risk triage rooms. The neighbouring theatres and ward areas remained fully operational throughout the construction programme.

W E LLB E I N G H U B S Located across five London hospitals are spaces for relaxation and renewal dedicated to the wellbeing of everyone who works and volunteers at Barts NHS Trust hospitals, provided by Barts Charity in recognition of their steadfast commitment to patient care. Sonnemann Toon Architects brief was to transform clusters of rooms located in existing hospitals to give them a consistent and calm appearance, conducive to wellbeing and to avoid an institutional feel. Ceilings were raised, windows uncovered and views revealed. A selection of light, natural finishes and good lighting created a relaxing ambience. Interiors were enhanced by acoustically absorbent features and elegant accessories. A selection of modern high quality furniture in healthcare-appropriate finishes completed the look. The thoughtful selection of plants, books and games added by hub custodians ensured the hubs are popular places for staff to visit. Feedback from stakeholders and funders has been overwhelmingly positive.

GRE AT ORMOND STREET HOSPITAL SIGHT & SOUND CENTRE , LONDON Grade II listed, healthcare refurbishment, 3500sqm, Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust Sonnemann Toon Architects were commissioned by GOSH to design an outstanding clinical environment for outpatient care in an attractive historic building within their Bloomsbury campus. The Italian Hospital is a fine Grade II listed property and the project offered a unique opportunity to provide care and treatment to children in a less medicalised environment while returning the property to its original purpose and form. The exterior was repaired and internally the layout was reorganised to respect the principal elements of the original structure. The facility was extended, infilling at basement level and partially extending the ground floor into the courtyard to create landscaped gardens. The building services were significantly upgraded and renewable energy measures added. The Sight and Sound Centre brings together audiology, cochlear implants, ophthalmology, ENT and Speech & Language Therapy services in a uniquely warm and modern home.

G U Y ’S CA N C E R TR E ATM E NT CE NTR E , LONDON Medical fit-out, 5700sqm, HCA Healthcare UK The private patients wing in the Cancer Centre at Guy’s Hospital occupies the top four floors and is designed to offer the latest innovations and treatments including minimally invasive surgery to aid fast recovery. It is technologically advanced with such inclusions as Europe’s first integrated robotics theatre that facilitates more minimally invasive procedures and is patient focussed, projecting a calm reassurance through its design aimed at helping those in recovery to feel the best they can. Natural light is incorporated into the operating theatres and these may be considered a model for other such urban healthcare schemes. Great feedback has been received from both clinicians and patients: ‘not just first class for the UK, but internationally’ and an ‘Outstanding’ rating was achieved in the facility’s Care Quality Commission registration.
