A bs t r a c t

This portfolio presents an exerpt of my previous works, as an inverted timeline starting from my diploma project, to the working experience I had in Danemark at BIG, to earlier work I did during my master's degree. It is for that reason divided in three parts that cover those three distinctive periods: the year 2015-2016 where I went back to school in Paris to finish my studies, the period 2014-2015 where I was a design assistant at BIG, and back to the master's years in Paris from 2012 to 2014. My personnal work circles the idea that theory should be inherent to the practice of architecture, and navigates around this presupposed line of fracture of the architectural field, questionning the validity of this binar perception. The different projects I developed tend to state that contexts are conceptual realities. I believe architecture is a non closed system, that is in pertual movement and perpetual questioning because it is taken in a greater reality that exceeds it. It should not be a monosemic domain, because it needs to grow with the contradiction of other domains. Art, politics, technologies, constantly reset the field and the subject of architecture. The belief in a unique dominant speech that caracterised modernity has faded away. Jean Fronรงois Lyotard's analysis of postmodernity states the fragmentation of meaning as a contemporary condition; globalisation has paradoxally broken up with any universal narrative, producing a uncertainty that is important to adress. Opposing forces should not resolve themselves in forms, but rather should syncretise eachothers in situations. Rather than a unique building, a formal answer, I believe that architecture should aim at producing polysemy and insuring plurality, at adressing both the large territorial scales as well as local conditions. I believe in the very small, in the local, in culture and in history, in a certain sense of place. In considering architecture as a condition, as a margin for events to happen inspite of architecture. In differences and in contradictions.

Favignana, its old tonnara, now become a museum, that still carries an atmosphere charged with fishermen screams, with tuna smell. The indolent pace of this small village located on a fragile island subjected to a double insularity, the island of another island, Sicily. Favignana, living with Sicily the great agitations of History, accompanying them, even exhausting itself following. Favignana, the large voids of its abandoned quarries, vestiges of a vanished era, like so many manifest absences of an history that was at play somewhere else, once its tuffa stone had been used to build the palaces of Palermo. Favignana, today, its thousands of tourists that populate its shores in summer, and its old sailors converted into guides. The island of Favignana bears the marks of an economic use of its land, in pure waste. The project makes the praise of these territories, of their uses, of their usury, while trying to update something beyond the fascination for the suspended time of their history; it tries to think, therefore, to what could be a future for the island based on a new economy of its territory. The four buildings that I develop all participate in the same langage, all decline the same logic, that of the excavation of the matter, where the remaining full forms the rational program that offers a new economic opening to the island, while the void is deployed, depending on the context, above, below, beside or inside, as a necessary margin to these programs. By generating buildings larger than their mere program would need, the project creates an emptiness at the heart of the recovered matter, organizes absences, liberates breathing space. And by doing so, it sets up inconsistencies, contradictions. Criticism margins. Rather than the obvious, it seeks to stage the uncertain.

Design Assistant Copenhagen Date : April 2014 - July 2015

I spend almost a year and four months working at BIG in Copenhagen, before going back to school for the final year of master and passing my diploma. I had the opportunity of working on a lot of different projects, each with there own particular scales, programs, contexts, and from the Skematic Design phase to the Detail Design. I assumed different roles in the office, from model making to 3D renderings, from sketching to producing final material like plans, sections, diagrams. I was also in charge for a few weeks of one of them, which taught me a great deal about work organisation, laying out final material and building a relevant narrative. They each taught me a lot thanks to the variety of subjects and clients, as well as diverse team organisation and structures. But mainly what it offered me to witness was the particular way this office always makes the accent on the project as a narrative process, and how the culture of project they implemented in all their offices around the world they manage to maintain inspite of their endless enlargment.

We interrogated to what extend can those programs interact, and came up with this geometry made of superellipses shapes that roll and unroll between different cores of buildings, linking and sometimes bridging to connect the programs together.

The composition is made with seven core buildings, organised in three different and specific geometries, all linked together by bridges. We treated the facade in order to empahsize the unity of all those elements, therefore we chose a ribbon system that un rolls horizontaly around all the buildings in one stripe of wood.

We places the hotels and office at each end of the plot, and put in the middle all the potential in between links between those two programs : the sport center, the convention center, and the business center.

There was a necessity both from the developer and the local context of the Alps to use sustainable materials, so we chose burned wood for its thermic and structural properties, as well as for the local craftmenship and expertise.

I spent the last month of this work experience working on a commission for a mix used development area in France near the border of Geneva. The plot was part of a larger development for a new neighborhood in the city of Ferney-Voltaire. The program was constituted by the assembly of two hotels, a sport center, and offices.

MIXED-USE TOWER LA DÉFENSE, FRANCE 28 I have been working for this competition for six months. The status of this project in La DÊfense in Paris was rather specific, because it was not a publicly launched competion as usually in France. It was a publicprivate partnership where we were teaming up with a developer and a contractor, as well as needed to come up with a financial scheme to submit a bid proposal to the EPADESA, organism in charge of the managment of the area. The project was extremely challenging, as it would have been one of the first mixed program tower with housing in France. The program was constituted with two hotels, offices, and housing. We figured that a simple and appropriate answer would be to seperate formally those programs in different boxes to show this diversity, which would at the same time allow us to work on this idea of suspended ground floors. So we worked a lot on the dimensioning of the four different floorplates to be able to have this impression of staggered and dancing boxes. We also worked a lot on the difining of the different in between spaces, and we decided to do suspended garden that would each have a specific echosystem and material treatment according to their height from the actual ground floor. A tower is like a mountain, and need to express the same diversity rather than being a monolith.

I worked for five months on a serie of commissioned projects for an area of Hualien, in Taiwan. From images for 'mountain", a housing project, to hotel projects, to this container hotel project. THis was the most important one because I ended up in charge of the last presentation material. This project had no particular brief, which made it all the mode harder. We did two different versions of it previous to this one, but the client was unsatisfied both times. We then dicided to make a catalogue like book, and study all the stacking possibilities we could have on the site. We broked down the internal organisation of the container to four quatergories, with with we came up with a serie of statcking system, all scalable to different sizes. We did a serie with squares, but focused mainly on circular stackings. We submitted two books, one containing the container catalogue, as a DIY proposal, and a proposal for one of the mainy possible application on site. The proposal embodies the scaling logic at heart with the stacling systems, and proposes a hotel as a gradient from main house to smaller pavillions.

I worked for one month and a half on this competition for the new headquarters of TAZ, a left oriented newspaper based in Berlin. The program was really interesting because the client was extremely particular. It was an office program, but that needed to be a bit more than that, to capture the essence of the attitude of the newspaper. We came up with this idea of multiplicity in unity, and formed the project around this idea of bundle. Independant pieces linked together to create un unique identity. It was the beginning of my intership at BIG, so I essentialy did models, from the study models to experiment with different ideas and shape, to the final ones at two different scales. I also helped out on detailing, mainly for the green strategy of the facade, for the courtyard treatments and other things.

COPENHAGEN BUSINESS SCHOOL MASTERPLAN COPENHAGEN, DANEMARK This project was the first one I worked on at the office. I jumped in to help out for the last three weeks of the competition, and mainly did diagrams and sections of the building. I got to see how team work opperate in this particular office, how division of work makes a project fo smoother, but also how every part of the team is valued and listened to. Their is no great hierarchy, and every opinion counts, and a great flexibility of mind is crucial in order to be able to question at any time the assumptions of the design. We in fact ended up changing the scheme the last two weeks, to make it the closer it would be to the urban narrative we wanted to implement in this masterplan project. The fact that is was in Copenhagen was a great opportunity for me to discover how the nordic cities are made, what are their particularity, and also to research the history of the campus figure was very exciting. This masterplan proposal for the extension of the business school was offering this idea of thickening the circulation axes with pockets of spaces on each side. We came up with this shape as a smooth checke, that alternates void and full.

URBAN METABOLISM

System components

This project is an urban proposal for the city of Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang, and question the generic growth of cities currently undergoing in China. It proposes to adress the city by the small scale, which could stitch up the highly contrasted chinese urban fabric and recreate urban qualities. The site for this project is a significant fraction of land, a sub urban area of 10 hectares that hosts the leftover of an industry and the illegal settlement of people migrated from nearby rural areas, surrounded by residential high rises, as so many signs of its future development. A site yet promising, next to the Grand Canal, a major cultural heritage figure of chinese territory.

I therefore chose to implement a circular system of exchanges and uses, and to question the specific typologies, overlays and combinations that may exist between very diverse practices within a limited space. In what way industry still has a place in a tertiary society, how activities and housing can cohabit together to produce urbanity, how closed loop operations allow for a greater urban quality and diversity. The project confronts the context of the high-speed production of the city, and seeks to create an autonomous time, an ecological cycle that multiplies and overlays uses. The intervention offers a dual architecture, one temporary and flexible which hosts cultural and industrial uses, and the other perennial, material, which has 400 units of housing, and services. Inbetween those two, the soil protection is a prerequisite for the metabolic running of the site: agriculture, storage of products, an area of ​​transportation of waste and fertilizers, an agricultural high school, a market that allows exchanges, and a cultural center for this new urban programmatic model.

THE WEIGHT OF SUSPENDED TIME The project questions the capacity of cities as architectural entities to contain their own material of renewal. This is the case of Chandigarh, Indian city of Punjab, whose standards and corbusĂŠennes chartres froze the development of the city in the purity of the original intent, and are now being questioned, sometimes overwhelmed, by logics of informal development. This dynamic appears very strongly in this paradoxical context of an affluent city in India, an European theory in Asia, a capital of modernity in a country still very much attached to its traditions, and finally in the enconter of a modernist international identity, now very much historicized, with a local identity in permanent evolution. The intervention is located on the Capitole of Chandigarh, which is the place of staging for power, for the democratic ideals of Nehru, and for the metaphysical inspirations that are at work behind the project of Le Corbusier. Willingly positionned at the head of the city, it has now become an empty place, where time feels suspended, but whose boundaries are precisly being eroded by another temporality, that of the very dense urban activities of a city in mutation. The project seeks to establish the opportunity for a new perception of this territory and heritage, for an experience of the route, of the distended space and the effects of scale set up between void, people, buildings and the line of the Himalayas. It therefore develop an architecture that formalizes the course, and alternates building, structure, landscape, and soil treatment : a path for perception, that questions the incompleteness of the initial project of Le Corbusier, the democratic and social ambition of this place, the urban development of villages on its outskirts, and finally the urban anchor of this floating head of power.

CHARTIER CORBASSON

Housing Project Conflans-Sainte-Honorine, France

48 During the four months of this internship, I had the opportunity of working on several different types of projects, and it gave me a good glance at how much architecture can undertake different forms. The first project I worked on was a housing project, a preliminary draft for a private client. Constituted of 30 units, the main axis for this design was the integration to the surronding environment: a park, a public plaza and an ancient castle now a museum. This particular situation inspired the idea of an hill-shaped building, merging itself with the park and adapted to the topography. Afterwards, I worked on two successive projects of exhibitions. The first one took place at Archilib Gallery, and exhibited 500 drawings, images and photographs on the most recent project on the office, the Chamber for Commerce and Industry of Picardie, in Amiens. The idea was to coat the walls with a layer of paper, each A3 format fixed to the other like fish scales. The second exhibition took place at the Maison de l’Architecture of Paris. It was a collective exhibition, divided in two parts: the students and the professionals. The office was in charge of the scenography of the professional part, whereas a collective of student assured the one for the other part. In Vitro proposed a glance at projects of research developed by 30 firms, from more extablished ones to just emerging ones.

Recherche libre, appliquée ou expérimentale en architecture Consacrée à l’architecture des rêves libres, In Vitro comprend deux zooms sur deux générations d’architectes. En premier lieu, carte blanche a été confiée au bureau de coordination des étudiants des sept écoles d’architecture de la Région Ile-de-France. Il vous invite à un parcours initiatique, sorte de voyage à Rome via internet, Grand Tour du réel et du virtuel qui approvisionne aujourd’hui la sensibilité des architectes du futur. En second lieu, la Maison de l’architecture en Ile-de-France a voulu proposer une mise en scène de recherches actuelles collectées dans une quarantaine d’agences. Il s’agit de témoigner de cette façon qu’ont des Hommes et des architectes d’aujourd’hui d’accueillir le monde, de ramasser les rêves usagés pour en façonner de nouveaux. Ainsi toutes générations réunies, l’architecture a-t-elle à nouveau l’occasion d’exprimer sa volonté, d’avoir « l’âme fraîche et de grands travaux », de « ne jamais désespérer mais de faire infuser davantage », de produire cet imaginaire dont on a tant besoin, cette poétique dont la ville a tant besoin, cette utopie comme appel à un nouvel univers de formes. La Maison de l’architecture est ravie d’accueillir des projets qui n’attendent plus rien à part peut-être une reconnaissance et de pouvoir vous offrir à l’occasion de cette exposition un très beau voyage. Le temps de la profession Alors que la profession d’architecte est de plus en plus sollicitée au travers de concertations, d’ateliers de travail ou de manifestations culturelles, pour son expertise et sa capacité de médiation dans le débat citoyen, l’exposition In Vitro proposée par la Maison de l’architecture en Ile-de-France met en lumière auprès de la profession et du grand public, les projets de recherche que développent librement les architectes en parallèle ou en amont de leurs réalisations.

Loin de leur production classique, quels regards portent-ils sur la société ? Quels sont les ferments qui fécondent leurs imaginaires, leurs réflexions ou influencent leurs productions ? Quelles pistes explorent-ils pour donner naissance à leurs futures réalisations ? En dehors des chemins tracés par la commande publique ou privée, ces initiatives traduisent la richesse des approches, des centres d’intérêts, parfois des opportunités à saisir. Poétiques, écologiques, urbaines, sociologiques, technologiques ou simplement militantes, elles symbolisent le rôle transversal de l’architecte dans notre société, sa capacité de questionnement et d’anticipation. Sans catégoriser les travaux présentés, In Vitro révèle, entre les lignes, l’influence de ces recherches sur la production des architectes mais aussi les stratégies de développement qu’elles initient ou accompagnent. STUDIO

Conversion of a studio composed of two bedrooms "chambres de bonnes". To benefit from the double exposure East-West of the appartment, the bathroom opens directly onto the corridor and is closed by a sliding door in sanded glass. The strong color of the flooring emphasizes the luminosity and therefore the impression of amplitude of the space.
