THE FACULTY OF ENGINEERING
W
e offer applied science and/or research based study programmes. Close co—operation with companies in Denmark and abroad. And focus on real life problems taken directly from industry. Our students thrive academically and personally. Why? We challenge them by involving them in project work, developing both their academic and personal skills. Whether on campus or in a company, students often work in small groups of between two and four people. This is the preferred method, because it gives students the chance of achieving the best innovative results. Companies worldwide often require their graduate engineers to work in this way. The faculty is internationally renowned for its expansive research environment and close links with industry. Research at the faculty varies greatly, from areas such as product design and software development to advanced robot technology and artificial intelligence. The Faculty of Engineering has more than 2,000 students and is highly international, with students from all over the world. As an engineering student you become part of an informal and inspiring study environment where it is easy to make new friends. You will gain considerable practical experience thanks to the faculty’s practical approach to learning. Classes are small, with often no more than 20 students, so you have time to discuss issues in depth with your teacher.
TWO CAMPUSES The Faculty administration and four institutes are placed in Odense and one institute is in Sønderborg. The institutes are: ¹¹ Institute of Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology and Environmental Technology (Odense) ¹¹ The Maersk Mc—Kinney Moller Institute (Odense) ¹¹ Department of Industrial and Civil Engineering (Odense) ¹¹ Institute of Sensors, Signals and Electrotechnics (Odense) ¹¹ Mads Clausen Institute (Sønderborg) ¹¹ The Maersk Mc—Kinney Moller Institute (Odense)

The global development is creating a need for employees with practical understanding of the integration of IT into business administration. It will not suffice to rely exclusively on employees with qualifications limited to the fields of programming, systems maintenance or traditional business administration. Rather, the enterprises need employees with additional knowledge of the analytic, business-related and strategic significance of IT—employees whose outlook is practical and projectoriented as well as cross—curricular, involving all members of the organisation. To fulfil that need, we have developed an International Bachelor Programme in Economics and IT with all courses taught in English. This combined programme is characterised by the following strengths: ¹¹ The programme is based on a number of courses and teaching methods that provide a unique combination of theory and practical experience. ¹¹ The programme includes six months of internship with a business enterprise or organisation.

Master of Science in Public Health An increasing number of children suffers a lot from overweight and obesity. The average life expectancy for the Danish population is relatively low. Certain groups in our so called equal oriented society have a relatively short and very disease tormented life. What are the underlying causes for these developments— and what can be done to prevent them? What can be done to improve health and well being for all? The first semester introduces you in core modules in the art and science of public health, advanced epidemiology and biosta-
tistics and evaluation methods using problem-based learning, lectures, project work and skills training.

What will our future bring?
These and many other questions are dealt with in the Public Health programme. A new, dynamic, complex and analytical branch of health sciences, where policy is connected with statistics and mathematics, behavioural sciences with physiology, anatomy and ethnology, and where environmental health is as important as critical reflections.
Can lifestyles diseases and a decreasing birth rate put an end to prosperity in European economy? Will global warming it will bring back malaria to the Nordic countries? And why does it seem that prevention campaigns have such a limited effect? Medicine alone can´t treat ill health. Knowledge of economics and society is also need-

The Danish societys experiences together with the internationals communitys great challenges of demanding future scientists to be able to integrate and combines the scientific basic disciplines in new and untraditional ways. Furthermore, scientists of tomorrow will have to communicate and cooperate across traditional disciplinary boundaries even more. The more knowledge we generate about means of action and effects of existing solutions, the better the solutions of tomorrow’s problems will be. Therefore the Faculty of Science at the University of Southern Denmark has developed the new MSc Honours Programme in the Interdisciplinary Science Studies. Our faculty comprises four departments with outstanding research and dedicated teaching ¹¹ Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology ¹¹ Department of Mathematics and Computer Science ¹¹ Department of Physics and Chemistry ¹¹ Institute of Biology The Danish society is experiences together with the international community great challenges demanding future scientists to be able to integrate and combine scientific basic disciplines in new and untraditional ways.
