Go behind the scenes at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute on our Panama Canal Passage and Costa Rica Cruise (page 57).
Bob Szaro currently serves as a consultant to the Smithsonian on biodiversity and climate change. With expertise in ecology and zoology throughout Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America, he has studied a wide variety of animals and plants and their interaction with human cultures in more than 100 countries. He also has a passion for different cultures and photography. Bob will be an expert on our Panama Canal Passage and Costa Rica Cruise (page 57), plus several African safaris and journeys to South America. Q. What kinds of insights about biodiversity in the tropics do you plan to address during the upcoming Panama Canal cruise? A. Central America accounts for only 0.1% of the Earth’s surface but it boasts 7% of the world’s biodiversity with its two southern countries Costa Rica and Panama being the most diverse. Traveling through Costa Rica and Panama you learn to expect the unexpected. Every day something new and exciting will be waiting for us as we explore the natural treasures of the region. The multicolored splendor of flowering trees in the tropics is rarely matched in any temperate forest. Why are the tropics so diverse particularly in this region? Its geographic position, its two coasts, and its mountainous systems, which provide numerous and varied microclimates, are some of the reasons that explain this natural wealth, in terms of both species and ecosystems.
Matt Larsen is Director of the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) in Panama. Matt oversees STRI’s research facilities throughout Panama and field sites in 14 countries in Africa, Asia, and the Americas and approximately 300 employees as well as visiting scholars and students. He is a respected scientist with expertise in climate change and land-use change. Matt looks forward to welcoming Smithsonian Journeys travelers to STRI on our Panama Canal cruise (page 57) and to introducing them to STRI scientists and scholars and their Smithsonian research. Q. What do you want Smithsonian travelers to know before they visit STRI on their behind-the-scenes visit? A. STRI scientists offer unbiased information about tropical environments—from rain forests to coral reefs—for the public good. Our science serves all sectors of society in the U.S., in Panama where we are based, and throughout the tropics. As a premier U.S. tropical research platform, we host unusually large-scale longterm studies. More than 1,400 scientists and students from academic and research institutions around the world visit STRI every year. Also, I would encourage you to watch the video on the Smithsonian Journeys website (for the Panama Canal cruise) to learn more about STRI, and of course, to visit our website as well!

The years 2014 to 2018 mark the 100th anniversary of World War I, a conflict that became known as the Great War. Followed by another world-shattering war, World War I remains one of the most tragic—and most heroic—in modern history. For four years the war raged across Flanders, Picardy, Champagne, and the Ile de France. Travel with us to explore some of the most important sites of the Great War.
