Our Experts Providing In-Depth Understanding and a Sense of Wonder Among the experts who accompany you on your journey are Smithsonian scientists who are scholars in biology, ecology, geology, and other disciplines, and curators who study and interpret culture, art, and history. You’ll also find other scholars and scientists—as well as diplomats, authors, journalists, theater experts, and naturalists— who have been selected by Smithsonian Journeys for their special knowledge and charisma. We think you’ll find that the quality of our experts is the difference between an outstanding travel experience and a mass-market alternative. Meet some of our experts and read about the tours they will lead in the pages that follow and visit SmithsonianJourneys.org/Experts for more information. Hugh Shapiro is professor of East Asian history at the University of Nevada and has taught previously at Princeton and universities in Japan and Taiwan. His areas of expertise range from the history of Asian medicine to cross-cultural experience, material culture in Central Asia, life in post-socialist societies, and visual and performance art. Hugh will lead A Cruise of Japan (page 11) and a departure of The Silk Road: A Journey to Central Asia (page 18). Cathleen Lewis is curator of international space programs and spacesuits at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum, where she specializes in Soviet and Russian programs. She was chair of the museum’s Collections Committee for many years and also has interests in the history of astrobiology and the history of the African American experience in aviation and spaceflight. Cathleen will lead Inside the Russian Space Program (page 77). David Scott Palmer is founding director of the Latin American Studies Program and a professor emeritus of International Relations and Political Science at Boston University. David has a deep and broad knowledge and understanding of Latin America and of Peruvian history, culture, and people. He will lead A Cruise of Panama and Costa Rica (page 29) and departures of Legendary Peru (page 30) and Machu Picchu and the Galápagos (page 31).
Janetta Rebold Benton is an art historian with special expertise in medieval and Renaissance art and architecture. Janetta, a professor at Pace University in New York City, is currently working on her ninth art history book and has published many scholarly articles. In 2012, she spent a year in St. Petersburg as a Fulbright Senior Scholar and returns often to present conference papers at the Hermitage Museum. She has also focused on the art and architecture of England and France and enjoyed living in Paris for four years working as a professor of art history. Janetta will lead two tours in the summer of 2017: St. Petersburg and the Baltics (page 77), and London: A One-Week Stay in England (page 58). Q. What kinds of insights do you feel art history themes will bring to our travelers? A. In addition to an appreciation and enjoyment of the beauty of the art and architecture we will see, I hope people will approach art history as historical documentation of our past. Works of art are irrefutable records of social structure, economics, religious beliefs, politics, and more. The visual arts reveal the inspiration and ideas, the inventions and accomplishments of creative individuals through the centuries—shared today with Smithsonian Journeys travelers.
Q. What do you feel Smithsonian Journeys travelers will enjoy most on our new tour, St. Petersburg and the Baltics? A. This outstanding itinerary features wonders of the Baltics and Russia that may be unfamiliar even to experienced travelers. In Lithuania, 15th-century Trakai Castle, on its own island, contrasts to the Baroque exuberance of the capital, Vilnius. In Latvia, the Palace of Rundale, designed by Rastrelli, will prepare you for his extravagant Hermitage in St. Petersburg, while the medieval Old Town areas of Riga and Estonia’s Tallinn take you back in time. In St. Petersburg we will stay in my favorite hotel, the Grand Hotel Europe, the ultimate in elegance and ideally located to walk almost everywhere. St. Petersburg—with pastel-colored palaces, domed churches, and a grid of canals—is unlike any other city. The Hermitage, founded by Catherine the Great, displays one of the great art collections of the world while the Peterhof palace and gardens reflect the luxurious lifestyle enjoyed by the Romanovs. Q. What do you enjoy most about accompanying Smithsonian Journeys travelers? A. I love the people and my interactions with them! They are extremely varied in their careers, interests, lifestyles, and past experiences. Guests are assured of traveling with compatible people, which I have found result repeatedly in genuine lasting friendships based on a shared journey.
Gaze in awe upon the palace, gardens, and fountains of Peterhof, outside St. Petersburg (pages 76–78).
