James Karr is a highly respected biologist with expertise in zoology and environmental policy. A tropical ecologist, Jim has served as deputy director of the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama and has traveled the globe’s tropical regions to study birds and other wildlife. View the romantic landscape along the Rhine River on Great European Journey (see page 12).

John Sweets is a historian who specializes in 19thand 20th-century western European history. He has published many works on topics in modern French history and has received two NEH fellowships for his research. As a university professor, he taught both undergraduate and graduate courses with a special focus on French and German history and their interaction over time. Recently returned from our Great European Journey, John will lead the trip again in 2016 (page 12) as well as departures of France Through the Ages and Paris: A Stay in the City of Light (pages 16 and 17). Q. What do you feel are the cultural and scenic highlights of the Great European Journey tour? A. The medieval cathedrals of Cologne and Strasbourg, as well as smaller yet beautiful religious architecture in Koblenz, Heidelberg, Berne, and Lucerne provide a major theme for the tour. And bringing together both cultural and scenic highlights, the Upper Middle Rhine River Valley, a World Heritage site, features beautiful and meticulously tended vineyards rising above the river along with the striking half-timbered architecture of the villages and the castles and castle ruins that dominate the landscape. Another highlight is the very full day in Lucerne, which starts with a walking tour across Chapel Bridge with its beautiful 17thcentury paintings, continues with an excursion to Mt. Pilatus with a gondola ride up and a cog-wheel train ride down the mountain, and concludes with a peaceful boat ride on Lake Lucerne—perhaps the single day tour de force of the trip. Yet standing at the Gornergrat with a spectacular view of the Matterhorn is hard to top!

Q. What kinds of insights do you hope to bring to our travelers? A. More than 40 years of studying, teaching, and writing about European history, as well as almost six years of living in various European countries, has given me an understanding of the peoples and culture, especially of those who live in the French and German heartland of today’s European Union. I hope to share insights from these experiences with travelers who are less familiar with this part of the world. Because I have made this trip several times, I can often help out with practical matters as well. However, I am most pleased when travelers tell me that I have enabled them to see some issue from the perspective of Europeans in a way that they had not imagined before coming on the tour. Q. What do you enjoy most about accompanying Smithsonian Journeys travelers? A. One of the most enjoyable aspects is, perhaps ironically, what I learn about my own country from the travelers. Since they come from all parts of the United States and from a great variety of occupations and, quite often, have lived very interesting lives, I find that many of my preconceived notions about my fellow citizens and the places they come from undergo substantial revision as I share meals or talk with them on our bus rides or city tours. I am reminded, as I so often tried to teach my students, that many things that seem simple may in fact be very complicated. As I try my best to convey the richness and complexity of Europe’s history to the travelers, I discover that they are teaching me a good deal about my own history and its complexities.

Our ocean and river cruises feature exceptional itineraries of popular destinations worldwide as well as unique routes. And with our onboard experts and fascinating shore excursions, you’re sure to have a memorable voyage.

Choose from city stays in London or Paris, where you’ll feel like a local with accommodations in “apart/hotels” and transportation passes, and enjoy an enriching experience during planned activities. Or choose a two-center stay with our “Impressions” programs with enticing combinations like Palermo and Taormina in Sicily, England’s Lake District and Scotland’s Highlands, and several more. And our “Living In” series takes you to Aix-en-Provence, Florence, or Bali for an extended stay. Choose one or several themes—such as language lessons, cuisine, and/or art and culture—and learn from local experts.

Stand in awe before the ethereal beauty of Agra’s Taj Mahal on the popular land trip Mystical India (see page 53), by train on Northern India’s Royal Rajasthan, at the conclusion of the cruise Passage to India (both on page 52), or on Around the World by Private Jet (see page 45).

The years 2014 to 2018 mark the 100th anniversary of World War I, a conflict that became known as the Great War. Followed by another world-shattering war, World War I remains one of the most tragic—and most heroic—in modern history. For four years the war raged across Flanders, Picardy, Champagne, and the Ile de France. Travel with us in France to explore some of the most important sites of the Great War.

In 1940 British and German air forces were locked in combat over Britain. Despite being the largest sustained bombing campaign the world had ever seen, the Royal Air Force maintained its superiority. The Battle of Britain became a decisive turning point in the war and proved the strength of air power in military operations. From London and Cambridge, visit important airfields, aviation museums, and military sites, and attend the world-renowned Farnborough Air Show, a spectacular celebration of aviation that occurs only once every two years.

Highlights Include ■ Battlefields: Visit battlefields, military cemeteries, World War I museums, memorials, and monuments, as you walk in the footsteps of the brave people who sacrificed so much. ■ The Somme: See sites associated with one of the largest battles of World War I, which lasted more than four months. ■ The Marne: Trace the dramatic events and various sites of the first and second battles of the Marne, including Chateau-Thierry and Belleau Wood where Americans fought so hard. ■ Verdun: Explore Verdun, where French troops held ground throughout the war and where American troops carried out one of their most important campaigns.
