About the cover

A message from the mayor

I

n Oakville, our vision is to be the most livable town in Canada.

We achieve that by focusing on four key priorities: protecting greenspace, controlling growth, and investing in high-quality facilities, services and infrastructure, and keeping our finances healthy, stable and strong. From our pristine waterfront to our thriving urban forest, Oakville’s natural heritage is one of its most distinct characteristics. That’s why we work to preserve greenspace, protect and grow our tree canopy and assure a publicly accessible waterfront that can be enjoyed by all our residents. We also help keep our residents healthy, active and engaged by investing in high-quality community services, facilities and infrastructure. In the last ten years we have added roughly one million square feet of community facilities. Additionally, we are now home to the brand new, state-of-the-art Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital.

Oakville’s reputation for livability makes it one of the most attractive places in the Greater Toronto Area for growth. That’s why we make sure that growth is controlled to what fits for the environment and the community. Our “Livable Oakville” Official Plan directs growth into designated areas, helping preserve the character of our stable neighbourhoods. Vitally, we do all this while maintaining the best fiscal health in Ontario. We’re proud to say that for nine years running, Council has set and met the goal of keeping annual tax increases at or below inflation. To learn more, visit Oakville.ca, or simply visit Oakville, and experience our unique heritage, environment and livability for yourself. Best, Rob Burton

Tesla Opens New Sales and Service Location in Oakville Tesla, the California-based manufacturer of the allelectric Model S sedan, Model X SUV and a unique set of Energy Products, opened a new store and service center in Oakville, Ontario.

L

ocated just off of Queen Elizabeth Way, the new 27,000 square-foot Store and Service Center helps to serve the growing number of Tesla owners in Oakville and the greater Toronto area. Oakville is Tesla’s third Service Center in the broader Toronto area joining locations in Mississauga and Lawrence Avenue in York. The store showcases Model S and Model X while highly knowledgeable staff onsite focus on spending quality time with each interested customer and are on hand for test drives and demonstrations. Tesla’s Model S sedan, Model X SUV and soon to arrive Model 3 offer an incredibly safe, yet aesthetically beautiful and powerful way to drive one-hundred-percent electric. Unprecedented range allows Model S to drive up to 539 kilometers on a single charge while Model X achieves 475km, and dual motors digitally and independently control torque to the front and rear wheels, providing unparalleled traction while increasing performance and efficiency. This all-wheel drive capability allows for instant response and allweather driving in icy, slick or snowy conditions – one of the many reasons why Model S and Model X have raised the bar for the 21st century vehicle. Canada was the first international location for a Tesla showroom. The first Canadian store opened in November 2012 and was located

inside the Yorkdale Mall in Toronto. The Yorkdale Mall location still exists and has proven that there is a strong Canadian market demand for Tesla to continue to expand in the country. Tesla designs, builds, sells and services all of its vehicles independently, eliminating any unnecessary steps to make the service experience as seamless as possible for owners. And unlike traditional franchised dealerships, Tesla does not run its service centers as profit centers. Instead, Tesla vehicles benefit from free over-the-air software updates that not only provide new features and functionality to customers throughout the life of ownership, but also enable Tesla to diagnose and fix many service issues without the customer having to bring their vehicle in for service. Tesla customers continue to rank the company #1 across the industry in owner satisfaction ratings. Canadian residents have access to 23 Supercharger stations placed along main highways for long distance travel. With 10 Superchargers in Ontario alone, and Grimbsy being closest to Oakville, Tesla owners can travel routes leading to Montreal, northern Ontario and into regions of northeastern United States. Tesla designed the fastest, most convenient, and extensive charging network in the world – The Supercharger Network – making owning a fully electric Tesla easy and convenient. As Tesla embarks on new locations around the world, its new location in Oakville further connects the Toronto community to its mission toward a more sustainable energy future.

Oakville welcomes a new Tesla sales and service location found at 225 Wyecroft Road Oakville, Ontario (south of the QEW between Trafalgar & Dorval Drive). This new location in Oakville further connects the Toronto Tesla community.

An Active Learning Environment Linbrook is Oakville’s all boys’ school

T

he theory that boys and girls learn differently is one that is backed up by an increasing amount of academic research. It is also what led Amber Way, the founder of Linbrook School, to start a boys’ school in Oakville. Prior to Linbrook opening in the fall of 2014, parents’ options for single gender education for their sons were limited to the city of Toronto and northern campuses. Now, families who live between Etobicoke and Hamilton are also benefitting from a unique program that develops a love of school in young men. Linbrook School is a not-forprofit, independent day school (Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8) that prides itself on the compassion and knowledge of its staff. The school’s capacity of 180 boys creates an intimate environment, where every member of staff knows every student. Linbrook’s program is designed to address boys’ need for movement and to build upon their natural love of learning through humour, competition and a customized

curriculum. In addition to a challenging academic program, boys who attend Linbrook spend a significant amount of time actively engaged in athletics, music and art. The program has been designed to offer students a wide array of experiences with teachers who are passionate about their subject area and who love inspiring boys to achieve their true potential. From the moment you walk through Linbrook’s front doors, you know you’ve entered a special place. The positive energy that spreads throughout the school is immediately evident, and the physical environment is warm and inviting. As you stand in the school’s lobby, the expansive playing fields and dense woodlot are pleasantly visible. In addition, every classroom is bright and airy, with large windows that bring the outside into all learning spaces. The boys’ work areas include ergonomically designed stools and tables, including standing work surfaces, and technology also plays an important role in engaging the boys within their lessons. In the absence of girls, boys are generally more willing to try things and take risks, including activities as diverse as hip hop dancing, knitting, karate, coding and

Within a customized curriculum, Linbrook School engages boys by embracing their natural competitiveness and need for movement. robotics – there’s even a babysitting club. Another thread that runs alongside the school’s academic and extracurricular programs is teaching the importance of helping others. Linbrook’s students often help with local charities, while “kindness challenges” encourage the boys to commit good acts.

Linbrook invites families to schedule a personal tour. Visit www.linbrook.ca to learn more and contact info@linbrook.ca with questions or comments. For families who also have girls, Linbrook has the distinct advantage of having a girls’ school directly across the road, which many of the boys’ siblings attend.

Donors Fund Vital Hospital Equipment

O

akville Hospital Foundation is asking the community to go above and beyond by supporting a $1.5 million equipment appeal for Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. Since the opening of the new OTMH, patient volumes have increased dramatically. “The growth we are experiencing today was anticipated, but it’s arrived sooner than expected,” said Denise Hardenne, Halton Healthcare President and CEO. “We are fortunate to have staff, physicians and volunteers with the skills, dedication and passion for going above and beyond and in rising to the challenge of meeting our community’s healthcare needs.” Now it’s the community’s opportunity to help go above and beyond by supporting the appeal. Due to sustained volume increases there is a requirement to equip areas

such as Critical Care Unit, Pre Op Bays, Recovery Bays, and Emergency Department exam rooms. Last November, Halton Healthcare received new funding from the Provincial Government to respond to accelerated growth in patient volumes. This welcome funding will help towards addressing increasing demand as more seniors need care, more people are visiting the emergency department, more babies are being born and more residents are requiring chronic disease management. While funding increases such as this go some way to responding to rising demand, they are only part of the solution. The $1.5 million appeal will purchase items such as: • Critical Care Unit: sleeper chairs, physiologic monitors, I.V. infusion pumps

• Emergency Department: stretchers, procedure carts, oxygen flowmeters, I.V. infusion pumps • Pre and Post Surgery and Surgical Department: stretchers, anaesthesia cardiac monitors, bladder scanners, nephroscopes and a 3D laparoscope for urology, cystoscope for gyneacology, and numerous vital signs monitors Each year, the Oakville Hospital Foundation seeks and grants funds to purchase OTMH’s annual equipment needs - both replacement equipment that came from the legacy hospital, or new technology as it becomes available.

“This equipment is not funded by government and is only available through the generosity of donors”, stated Oakville Hospital Foundation CEO Tina Triano. “And sometimes an additional urgent need is brought to the Foundation, such as this, and we look to the community to respond urgently, and sometimes additionally, as they’re able”. Come From Away impresses critics and theatre goers on Broadway

A

fter a record-breaking run at The Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto, the Sheridan-incubated musical Come From Away officially opened on Broadway on March 12, 2017 at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre. It’s garnering positive reviews and buzz from critics and theatre goers alike including being named a New York Times Critics’ Pick. Written by Toronto’s Irene Sankoff and David Hein (My Mother’s Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding), Come From Away was originally developed and produced by Sheridan’s Canadian Music Theatre Project in 2012. It was optioned by Tony Award-winning producers, Junkyard Dog Productions (Memphis, First Date), which toured the show to regional theatres including La Jolla Playhouse, Seattle Repertory Theatre, and Ford’s Theatre in Washington DC, before its Toronto engagement last fall. The Washington Post called it an “an antidote for what ails the American soul” and wrote “the Tony race for best

musical of the year just got interesting.” The New York Post called the musical “Justin Trudeau’s ‘Hamilton’”, The Stage in the UK gave it a five-star review and lauded it as “a musical that tells an unusual, unfamiliar 9/11 story with tact and tremendous feeling.” A Broadway World critic noted: “As long as Come From Away is playing on Broadway, I will recommend it to everyone. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau took in the show with his wife and hundreds of other government officials on March 15, including “first daughter” Ivanka Trump, Phyllis Yaffe, the Consul General of Canada in New York, over 100 UN Ambassadors, and scores of Canadian Ministers, MPs and MPPs. Come From Away is based on the true story of how Gander, Newfoundland welcomed 6,579 people who arrived on their doorstep after 38 planes were forced to land on September 11, 2001. The hospitality shown by the residents of this tiny Canadian town restored the faith of these stranded travelers. The idea
