Francisco Alexander Bravo Universidad Yachay Tech Imbabura-Ecuador. December , 12,2016 Dear Portfolio Reader My name is Francisco Alexander Bravo, and I am student at Yachay Tech specifically I am at third semester. I want to study Polymers Chemistry and then apply a graduate program in India because this country has an excellent development of this area. Thank you for reading my portfolio of level 6 English course. Here you are going to find the essays that I made during the semester, and they demonstrate how was my enhancing processes of my English skills. They include four essays and the final research project named “Positive effects of Technology in Education. When I started at Yachay I thought that it will be easy because my idea of English class was only speaking some words, writing little paragraphs and attending class as well as was the English program of my High school. However, the reality was totally different because at English Yachay program teaches English for academic, and it is so difficult to learn. Additionally, something important that I want to highlight is my feeling about English. I do not hate English, but it does not like me for this reason learning English has been very difficult for me.

The end of semester arrived, and four months have lapsed very fast. Now, I feel happy and peaceful, because I have completed one more level in my English career and I also think that I keep increasingly learning and my knowledge and English skills are developing in an appropriate way. At the beginning of level six, I had many expectations about the teacher,

classmates, contents, and teacher’s methodology, and also I felt so afraid because I did not feel ready for this English level. The second day( first day I did not attend) , I met my new teacher, and I thought he looked very cool and flexible . However, my perspective changed when the teacher gave me the first essay´s grade. It was the worst that I have ever had at this University. At this time, the unique idea that runned in my head was that I am going to fail this semester. Certainly, my writing style was horrible because in my essays I had many basic grammar mistakes, many deficiencies in punctuation, informal vocabulary, and also inefficient organization of parts of essay. It meant that I had to do my maximum effort in order to correct these shortcomings. However, currently I think that the teacher of level six was very beneficial for improving my writing because at level four and five my quality of writing was enough to approve. So, I consider that in many cases is necessary a demanding teacher for students to show more interest in class, they learn and also solve deficiencies that they have. My progress along level six was slow, but substantial in comparison with previous semesters. Why? In order to answer this I am going to make a contrast between my English level at the beginning and at the end. The aspects that I am going to consider are writing, speaking and team work. At the beginning of the semester, at writing I had many grammar mistakes such as: incorrect use of article “the”, subject and verb disagreement, incorrect sentence structure (fragment and nonsense sentence), inappropriate use of preposition “in”, ”on”, and “at”. Additionally, my writing style included an incorrect use of punctuation rules because I used to write long sentences without one comma or period. Another characteristic mistake of my essays was the use of conjunction because I used to put comma before a subordinating conjunctions instead of before coordinating conjunctions (FANBOYS). On the other hand, my speaking skills were limited, and for this reason my first presentation was boring, and

impossible to understand. Additionally, team work was another part where I had many problems at the beginning of the semester because I have the custom of fight with the members of my group. Now, I am going to explain the most relevant assignments that I consider helped for improving my English skills. In my opinion, the final research paper was the most difficult writing assignment nevertheless it was very beneficial in order to improve my writing style. The reasons are because I had to read many scientific articles, and also I had to check many grammars structures in order to avoid this type of mistakes. At level six, there were many individual and group presentations. This served me to have more confidence and correct my body language. Regarding team work, the analysis of the sculpture named “The kiss of the dead provided substantial benefit to me because it was the first time that I could end one group work successfully. This work was very interesting , and didactic because all members of my group made their part of work, and also we shared our ideas among us. My progress at level six is reflected in my current writing because my essays have excellent organization, and also now I avoid writing fragment and meaningless sentences. At my last presentation, I showed more confidence and less nervousness, and it was easier to understand because I connected my ideas in a better way. And finally, I want to highlight my progress at team work because for the first time, I did not have conflict with members of my group, and we could finish the presentation and essay with a celebration. In the near future, I hope to continue learning English because it is indispensable for my student life. Also, I realized that at fifth semester; I'm going to need to understand everything teachers teach because all fifth semester’s classes are in English.

RESPONSE ESSAY

Will Technology kill Universities? Francisco Bravo Yachay Tech University

Do learning technologies is just didactic resources or teachers of the future? Technology has advanced in the last years. Currently the machines have invaded almost all aspects of our life. New Technologies are all field of science such as Biology, Math, Chemistry and others. One of most new and useful technology is the wireless. It has connected to all worlds and allows the sharing of information. The elite universities have used it in order to bear a part in academic information and they have created Open Online Courses and other academic resources. it managed to eliminate the privatization of scientific , and proven information .In this article called will technology kill the universities? Zocalo Public Square clearly states that technology won´t kill universities. However, there are few authors Who support that the open online courses will displace the physical universities. They provided interesting reasons but their arguments were not strong and convincible. In his article, Zocalo Public Square explained different opinion of college professors such as educational technologies developers and also promoters of education as a right. This company intends to do an analysis about whether the technology as educational resource has the capacity of substituting the traditional universities or not. The organization highlights the advantage that students have currently with all information available in the web and also the open courses provided by important universities around the word. The company uses ideas of five authors: First , Andy Miah mentions presently that the technology obligates that universities reconsidering which is its role in 21 th century world because all people can get access to important and relevant information. New students want different, more flexible and

dynamic

experiences

of

learning.

Therefore

university’s

goal

should

be

preparing student to lead their learning. The computers in a nearby future will become teaching entity because they will supply the requirement of tomorrow students. In the second place Kui Xie talks about the importance of professor in the process of learning. He mentions that students not only need to acquire much knowledge or develop their cognitive skill; they

also require interpersonal experiences such as collaboration, leadership, friendship, and apprenticeship. He predicts that teacher and physical school will not be replaced by massive open online courses ;since they have limitations for instance credibility, accessibility. However, those technologies will have a positive impact in educational system and improve the effectiveness and efficiency of college..In third place Shai Reshef, founder of university of people (accredited American online university and non-profit organization ) explains that currently, the demand of Students College – eager is increasing around the world, huge number of students do not have access to universities . She considers that wireless technologies have the power of bringing knowledge to every corner of the world, but freedom of information and less cost of technologies are necessary for achive this goal . According to the point of view of Kathryn Eccles; technology has made deep changes in all sciences and also technologies have permitted the sharing of knowledge as never before. However the despite advantages that technology has over human minds; the subjectivity is the unique human feature that a computer does not have and it makes impossible for a machine to resolve all problem or satisfies the requirements of students. For this reason Kathryn Eccles thinks that technology will not replace the physical universities. And finally Hans Johnson established that a premature prediction is ensuring that technology will make obsolete to brick College. He asseverated that anybody knows whether the technology is ready to front all challenges that high education represents. The biggest problem of Open Online Course is the users; the major part of those courses is taken by graduate students. Moreover, in California a community program (online college) was applied to underserved and marginal communities. This experiment shows a better academic performance of physical college students than online college students. No way, It not means that online education does not work , on the contrary learning technologies only need to be enhanced. Andy Miah talks about the new role of traditional universities and how technology has

influenced over this role, and also she mentions that computer becomes teaching entity. I partially agree with this author because the science world has constant changes. Therefore, universities have the need of adapting and transforming many aspects in order to not be obsolete. However, I consider that computers cannot be compared with a professor. Technology is only a didactic resource. Kui Xie establishes the relevance of teacher for learning process. I agree with this author because education is not about only sharing information. The goal of education is integral development of human beings. It means upgrading student´s cognitive and personal skill, and a machine cannot make this work. Shai Reshef explains that the Open Online Courses and wireless technologies are going to permit the sharing of knowledge to all corners of world. He assures that Online University is currently the solution in order for huge number of college – eagers to get access to universities. I completely agree with this author since today many people obtain several kinds of degrees via internet. In the world there are many colleges, however, just a little percent of population achieve to get into. Online universities may be the best or unique option of get college degree for the rest of people that cannot access to traditional university. Kathryn Eccles states that subjectivity is the skill of machines does not posses. This quality permits to do a deep analysis of phenomena, and also solve problems related with mining of be humans. The absence of this skill avoids to

computer replace to human

professors. I agree with this author because humans have some unique qualities and they will never be transmitted to machines. I think the best professor for human is another human because both does not have the similar mind or does not feel the same way.

Hans Johnson assures that technology is not ready for assuming all challenges for university education. I agree because technologies need many upgrades and correct some shortcomings in order to become in self –sufficient teaching entity as a teacher is . In summary, this article is a kind of debate about whether technology in the future will displace to traditional college. Some authors think that technology will not substitute to humans teachers because computers have limitations such as lack of credibility of information, they cannot resolve human problem, deficiency in academic performance of online college students and students need interpersonal experiences. However other author explains the benefits of online universities such as accessibility for more marginal population, it permits students without access to universities to get a college degree. Nobody knows how universities will be in future. Therefore all of us should be open to changes, and leverage technology currently available.

Women At 19th Century Francisco Bravo Yachay Tech University

The 19 th century was a terrible age for woman. Since the beginning of our history have existed the chauvinism, and this ideology has affected at the same way to young and old women. Many writers who were against to chauvinism decided to make some written

about

this social problem .In the story named “story of an hour “,Mr Mallar is described as the goodness of victory. The author uses this in order to explain the women´s limitation in 19 th century. The women of that time did not have right to leave home alone, and vote. Also they could not go to school. Firstly, women of 19th century did not have right to leave home alone. Women of that age did not have freedom. They could not go anywhere without their husband of other male parent. The women were confined to home because they should be conservative and pure. Men were the unique that could go out home alone. Additionally, Women of this century have allowed leaving hone according to schedule for example a woman for any reason could go to walk in the night. Another fact for clarify the absence of freedoms is that in this age, women had the obligation of go to church every Sunday. Secondly, the vote was another right that women did not have in this century. Women were considered as entity without capacity of take good decisions. Also, chauvinist society considers a woman less than a man. Politics were dominated by male gender. The woman could not choose a leader who fights for their right. The women of this age could not be elected as president, gubernator, mayor and others. Ecuador is an excellent example in order to clarify this point. Manuela Saenz was the first woman who vote in Ecuador, and when she did that many men tried to stop her. She carried to Ecuadorian women to political life. Finally, women could not go to school in the 19 th century. All schools only accepted men because women were consider whit minor cognitive skills than men. Science was only for male gender although the history many academic women was killed by extreme

chauvinist men. Example of that was Hypatia of Alexandria, who invented the factoring method, was killed by radical religious and they burned

her library. The chauvinism has

used the knowledge as domination tool. In that age, rickets women learned about religion, and omen with low resource acquired basic and ancestral knowledge in order to make manual work and farm. In conclusion, women in the last century had many limitations such as they could not go wherever they want, they could not choose the leader that they want, and also the major of women were illiteracy. Therefore, the chauvinism avoids the development of society and science that women would have provided.

INTERPRETATION ESSAY

The Kiss of the Death Bryan P. Chachalo, Francisco A. Bravo, Daniela A. Negrete Yachay Tech University

“And his young heart cannot help; in his veins the blood stops and freezes and encouragement lost faith embraces fall feeling the kiss of death” (Verdaguer, n.d.). In 1930 Llaudet family lost a young son who died all of a sudden, and because of that they wanted a sculpture which represents their feelings as a result of their son’s death. The Kiss of the Death is a gorgeous marble sculpture by Jaume Barba which represents tragedy and romance. The author of this awesome sculpture shows how people accept their destination and how the death welcomes them. The sculpture depicts the death, in the form of a winged skeleton, giving a kiss on the forehead of a handsome young man. The sculpture shows the death as a trip partner who guides people through a shadow valley directly to the feeling of renunciation of life. The death hugs and kisses the young man and it seems like the death was loving him. Ironically, that kiss will carry him to death´s world. The kiss of the death transmits a tragedy feeling for anyone who sees it. The tired hands that lie on the ground show a man defeated, a man who only said “Ok, take me” and does not want to proceed. The impotence of not being able to fight against the death who seems to be his faithful lover leaves the young man dreams and desires; he could not fulfill since the death was presented to him without anticipation. This unusual sculpture is intriguingly anachronistic in a pre-Raphaelite kind of way due to the perfection in the meticulous detailing of this sculpture. Details such as Death’s hollow ribs and tunic are rendered three-dimensionally that to allow see the cavities and spaces. All these details play a strong role in knowing what the author of this beautiful sculpture wants to convey to us. Thus, for example, the position of the hands transmits a feeling of resignation, or the position of the knees that are bent down transmitting a regret in the young man, and the most important sign that is the kiss that this winged figure gives in the forehead of the youth. All of these signs clearly have a meticulous work because in this way the author gives us an idea of

what he wanted to plasm in this artwork. Due to the hard work that seems to have the kiss, this work of art is centered in the fact that this figure (the death) seems to have a great desire to be at last with this young man. This man does not want to offer any resistance because it seems that something very important for him was snatched. So, the death with apparently great passion will go with his beloved young man to his world where the young man will finally get rid of what weighs him down. Ironically, love can be appreciated in this sculpture which at first sight only looks like a personification of tragedy as the death. Ironically, love can be appreciated in this sculpture, although at first sight what is most observed is tragedy personified in the death. The sculpture represents the death in the form of a skeleton with wings where the young man's body collapses before her. While the death who is the reason of the incident with an attitude of love gives him a kiss on the forehead and holds him so obstinately that we can appreciate the strength with she hugs the young man. A kiss represents love and it is purest and the most tender essence. The death is the causative of that young man's life will end, by kissing him and bringing him to his kingdom. How can there be love between death and youth? Maybe because the young man was willing to give himself to that love in all its fullness by accepting his fate. He was willing to give up his life to let his heart stop, and surrender to the death without thinking in consequences. Thus, regardless of the time nor the conditions their souls will be forever united in one alone. From another perspective, instead of a painful death, we can see it as a dream in which from another perspective, instead of a painful death, we can see it as a dream in which the young man falling in relaxed state and he is carried away to eternal dream in which death submerges him. A dream in which the two souls came together for eternity, eternity to which they entered together, by means of a kiss. This is how death clings to him, with a hug so strong, which ends up plunging into the dream of eternity.

Additionally, the author of this awesome sculpture shows how people accept their destination and how the death welcomes them. Young man´s face expresses resignation because he does not try to fight against death in order to conserve his life. Falling man´s arms and kneeling position denote the voluntary surrender of man's soul. The author uses these symbols for indicating that all people are conscious of their mortality and how fragile life is; it allows us to infer that all people accept the death as something normal. Also, the kiss at the man’s forehead is the welcome of eternal rest that death gives to whom died. Another interpretation of angel of death's kiss could be that it is as a promise of death to guide and accompany us when we walk through the world of the dead. The figure of “grim reaper” has different meanings for people according to their religion, or culture. However, all of them accept the dead as something inevitable and in some cases necessary. The skeleton could be an angel (by the wings) who carries the souls of deceased to a better world or to immortality. It is a new beginning because dying is only a transition between two world and realities. Also, it could symbolize just the ending of the way because the death transports our dear people outside this world where we are not going to see them never again. In conclusion, the are many ways in which an artist can express feelings, emotions or ideas. Barba, for example, uses a beautiful sculpture in which he represents feelings such as: tragedy and love in an unexpected way. Also, he manifests the resignation to life by accepting our mortality. As a group, we interpreted this sculpture in different ways such as: in an objective way focused on all details of the sculpture, and in a subjective way by looking for meanings for all excitements we saw. However, this interpretation is not the only one because there are many styles a person can perceive the idea of the author. Lastly, there may be many different thoughts because an interpretation is a subjective process that comes from within.

ARGUMENTATION ESSAY

One Global Language Francisco Bravo Yachay Tech University

The language was born with the man and it will dead with him. Around the world there are many different languages and some experts are debating the possibility that one language replaces all existents now. However, one global language is going to have negative impact in all countries. The first negative effect of one language is that it would eliminate essential parts of culture and identity of people or communities. The communication is attached to human beings as their own conscience, for this reason the mayor part of people prefer use their native language. If someone loses his or her mother language, he or she will lose a huge part of her or his identity. Also, when they talk in their language, they feel more comfortable and expressive. Additionally, there some words that exist or have meaning in one particular language. The identity of each member of community builds its culture. According to Dan Fitzgerald as cited of Collen Cancio if the languages disappear “Which of the culture that goes along with each of those languages would also disappear” (Cancio, 2016). Currently, there are economy and ideological factors that will not allow the existence of one universal language. At globalized world the interests of countries with successful economy control how the things happen. Therefore, all big economies would try to establish their language in order to expand their empire because the language makes it easier to buy products. Also, the ideology is another obstacle

for one global language because nobody

wants that his or her language to be eliminated because it is a subordinate ideological way as at the time of Columbus happened with the American native. A good example of failure trying to establish one global language is the case of Esparto, This language was created with the goal of becoming a common second language. However, it only has 2 millions

of

speakers around the world because the people said “Why have I learned this new language?” They did not have motivation in order to do that. Those reasons are why one global language cannot exist.

However, there are many people who agree with the existence of one global language. They believe that it is going to provide many benefits to humanity. This viewpoint is certainly valid, but it lacks research evidence. This people say that one common language world permit a better communication between people of far countries, but currently there is a kind of global language, and it does not the most spoken language. There are many obstacles that English will not overcome such as demographic, economic and other issues. Also, they argue that some wars was caused by misunderstanding, maybe one global language would solve their differences and avoid the war. One example for refuting this argument is that war can happen between countries with same language such as Ecuador and Peru. In conclusion, one common language should not excite because it would delete the diversity of languages and diversity of cultures. Also, there are interest conflicts and they never are going to allow define one global language. Although, some people thinks that one common language is going to give us huge benefits certainly it represent a big lose for all countries.

FINAL RESEARCH PROJECT ESSAY

Positive Effects Of Technology In Education Francisco Bravo Yachay Tech University

Abstract This paper explains the reason why the implementation of technology in education has had positive effects. Specifically, the research focuses on three benefits provided by technology to students; they include easiness for learning outside classroom in order to help to self-learning. Another benefit is that technology has the power of sharing the knowledge to all corners of world, and it can be used as a didactic tool. This paper used four scientific articles: “Will Technology Kill Universities?”, “What it Really Takes for Schools to Go Digital”, “An introduction to current trends and benefits of mobile wireless technology use in higher education”, and “Negative Effects of Technology on Education”. The first three resources talk about how education was affected by technology; the authors of these articles argue that technology has been beneficial for education. However, the last paper explains the risks of using of technology in education. The author emphasizes that technology overload represents the worst danger for students. Keywords: Technology, education, benefits, information, learning.

“Teachers need to integrate technology seamlessly into the curriculum instead of viewing it as an add-on, an afterthought, or an event” (Heidi-Hayes Jacobs). The advance of technology has influenced the direction that the civilization took, and currently technology has become a huge and fundamental part of our lives. On the other hand; education is the development engine because a literate country is a prosperous country, for this reason first world countries increase the investment to improve the quality of education. Many of them have equipped their schools with the best technology in order to achieve the improvement of teaching methods. However, today there are many debates about the effects of implementing technology in education between people in favor and against. Certainly, both have strong arguments, but there are many evidences about the benefits provided to students by technology. Technology has produced many benefits in education because it allows students to lead their own learning, and also it works as perfect didactic resource. In addition, technology has permitted to share knowledge to everyone. Firstly, technology allows students to lead their own learning because it hands over

students a more flexible way to learn and access all the information they

need. Currently, the world is at a technological age, and students are the most active users of machines. It means that almost all of them have a computer, cellphone, tablet, and other gadgets; for this reason they can have the possibility of saving a huge quantity value information. Certainly, a notebook has the same functionality nonetheless learning gadgets save information in a more interactive way. As a result, the information is easier for analyzing, and learning. Also, students can control the rhythm of learning because they do not have the problem of understanding the information at the same classmates´s pace. It was possible classroom.

because

technology

makes

it

possible

to

move

knowledge

outside

According to the author of the article named Will Technology Kill

Universities? “Students of tomorrow will want flexible, mobile-enabled learning experiences

that are as compelling as film or theatre (Zocalo, 2015). Furthermore, technology allows students to get free access to all the information that they need whenever they want. It has been a determinant factor for pupils in order to become self-taught. In order to emphasize the influence of technology is important to mention that some years ago the unique free information source was the library, and the students were limited to study by working long hours in that place. Another alternative was buying books, but they most of the times had high prices, and for this reason many students had to adapt to the limited information that they acquire from their teachers. It meant a huge obstacle to self-learning that today technology is helping to solve it. Besides, technology works as a tool inside of classroom. Another significant benefit of technology in education is that it is a perfect didactic resource. In the classroom, the methodology used by teachers is defined according to the scope of available resources. One important fact is that technology is more functional in class than traditional teaching resources because it provides pupils access to many multimedia tools such as videos, audios, pictures, gifs, and others. It means that teachers who are users of learning technology has better methodology and efficiency of teaching than others. Moreover, learning gadgets have so many platforms, and applications which teachers can use to interact with their students even outside class hours. As a result, according to Bloggs quoted by Kim, Mims and Holmes (2016) at 17 American colleges the percentage of technology at classrooms increases of 46 % (in 2001) to 79% (in 2003); the same phenomenon happens at libraries, research centers and other college buildings. A good example in order to illustrate the way how technology as a teaching and learning tool helps students to have excellent academic performance is the case of Michell Fandino (13 years old). She was a student of East Iredell Middle School. Michell had problems with math, and also she was nearly to fail 8th grade because of this subject. However, two months later she obtained many “As in her test and assignments. All of this was possible because she used a

math platform called Moby Max, and it allowed her to understand the problem better. This case was exposed by Margaret Ramirez (2014). Many more cases as the one from at East Iredell Middle School took place after the government gave a Macbook to every student of that institution. Also, Lori Meyer quoted by Margaret Ramirez said “This is the first time in my 12 years of teaching that students said writing the research paper was their favorite assignment” (Ramirez, 2014). Another important aspect of technology is that learning gadgets have been an efficient way of saving and sharing information. The last argument in order to support that technology has had a good impact in education is because it has permitted to share knowledge whit everyone. Technology made possible information sharing to all corners of the world in a fast way. It means that students can acquire knowledge that was generated on the other side of the world. Additionally, technology might be the future school because today there is a huge number of a student that cannot access to one educational institution. In general, it happens at marginal and underserved communities, and teaching and learning technologies could be the best or unique way for the people of those places to finish their studies. As a consequence, currently there are some projects in order to make more affordable scientific data, and proven information. For instance: Zocalo (2015) in its article talks about one pilot project facilitated by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology

(MIT) named OpenCourseWare. This project

consists in free online materials such as syllabuses, tests and multimedia. Today, the OpenCourseWare has 125 millions users who have access to resources of 2150 classes. Indeed, technology has transformed positively the traditional education in order to make it more efficient and less exclusive. Shai Reshef (president and founder of University of the People) quoted by Zocalo argues that “Technology will transform higher education from being a privilege of the few to being a right for all” (Zocalo, 2015). Certainly, technology has huge quantity of beneficial applications in education. However, there are many people against

applying technology in education because they consider that technology has many shortcomings. Taking into account the fact that technology does not guarantee quality of schooling, it is certainly easy to assume that technology can have negative effects over academic performance of students. The authors of article named “Negatives Effects of Technology on Education” argue that “Technology is producing a decline in critical thinking and analysis” (Brahmbhatt et al, 2012). In classroom, computers in many cases are used on inappropriate way. It causes the increase of plagiarism and misuse of language structure within essays. Technology has changed learning priorities in students because they are only focused on acquiring information rather than understand what this information means. Also, currently technology has negative employment effects since a number of fired teachers is increasing at the same rhythm that the quantity of technology in academic institutions increases. It means that if educational institutions continue implementing more and more technology the classroom, the teacher could be disappear of schools. The people, who believe that machines have a negative impact on education made a valid point. However, there are many educational institutions around the world where students have shown improvement in their academic performance after they used learning technology. Technology has made deep and positive changes in different areas such as communication, health, education and others. Technology has allowed the advance and improvement of these areas. Specifically, in education technology has increased the efficiency and efficacy in the way of transmitting knowledge. The benefits of using technology in education are substantial because students can continue learning even outside the classroom. It is going to allow that the new generations of students become self-taught, and also people with an insatiable desire to acquire knowledge and information. Additionally, machines provide the teacher incredible tools (multimedia resources, interactive platforms,

learning app, internet and others) in order to improve his methodology. Technology as all new inventions has some risks for students. However, it provides education more benefits than dangers; this fact highlights the need to implement technology in the field of education. In conclusion, should technology be implemented in education? The unique answer for this question is yes Technology and education can coexist in perfect harmony because technology is very beneficial for students. Today, the development of technology and its application in education has provided students invaluable tools and many advantages in order to develop their ideas and knowledge. The list of benefits that technology can give to education could be infinite, but currently technology is used as a self-learning tool and also it is useful as a didactic resource. Additionally, technology is a unique learning tool with the power of sharing knowledge with everyone.
