Portfolio Letter Bryan Herrera Romero Yachay Tech University Imbabura, Ecuador
December, 14th, 2016
Dear Portfolio Reader,
“Facing our weaknesses, makes us better. When I was in high school, I did not know the importance that English had in our lives. In high school, I never wrote a five paragraph essay because our teachers just focused the learning in grammar. For this reason, I did not dedicate much time to this subject because it was not interesting for me. While passed the time, some of my classmates entered in an English Academy to guarantee them to learn English in short time and outside of the traditional ways. Of course, they understood to teacher much better that some classmates because they knew some techniques to improve English little by little of a funny way. In my case, I just studied English in the schedule of class but the way to teach never liked me because it was the bored way where we sat down in the chairs and completed a sheet grammar until the class finished and no more. Therefore, when I came to Yachay Tech, I was really worried because I did not have a good base in English and still more worried because all my new roommates were very prepared to receive English classes. In that moment came to my mind all the time that I could have taken advantage to learn English and now was impossible. However, this thinking has been changing in each semester because I have learned a lot things like: grammar, participate in class and work 4
in group, I have improved all my weaknesses like listening, writing and speaking, I have enjoyed to learn with some games like: kahoot and scrubble. Therefore when I was in level three, I had a very good teacher who learn us basically grammar like: sentences in different times, modal words and the structure of the first three paragraph essay, but also teacher offered us a little time to participate in class giving our opinions about any topic. In level four, we began with deeper essays and expositions from two to five minutes about that topic. Thanks to expositions, teacher in level four help us to correct the pronunciation about some words. For example: Instead to pronunciate mast (must) I used to say must. Also our teacher proposed a little time where we should improvise about any topic to improve our speaking. Level five, it was more interesting because we began with complete five paragraph essay about topics or events of the real life and proposed a possible change or solution for the treated topic. Here we learn to play struggle to increase our vocabulary. Finally, level six required more work and attention than the previously levels described, however this level was the most interesting due to the assignments focused in an idea different to the others topics like: literary analysis, interpretation essay, argumentative essay, debate and multimodal presentation for midterm where we could express our topic of different ways in a free style. Therefore, level six is very important but overall very interesting because it can know, learn and improve our capabilities and knowledge. For example: our teacher, in each assignment, organize us in groups where we had to discuss the topic with our classmates and offer different ideas and opinions before to begin to write the essay. In that moment, I understood that the work in group is maybe a very important point to learn English because is a way where all can participate with opinion and critical thinking.
5
Also, doing comparison when I came to Yachay and now, I have achieved advantages in a lot aspects. First, I have learned grammar that have help me to write from a poor essay, a normal essay and finally an almost perfect essay because I improved my writing so much. Second, my listening has improved much because at the beginning I could not understand the most of things that I listened of other people but now I understand much better. Fourth, my reading improved much because thanks to the teacher, we know how the pronunciation of a lot of words is. Despite of my improvements in my English, I feel that I still have to improve more things like my speaking because in some cases, I cannot pronounce the words correctly and this is a true problem because people cannot understand me very well and my listening because I cannot understand people very well when they talk me quick and I confused the ideas, maybe because is necessary to know a very broad vocabulary to understand the words. The best way to learn English is to practice ourselves and trying and trying until to achieve our purpose. I recommend you that work in groups because it is an efficient way to interchange ideas and opinions, you must participate in class because of this way you improve your speaking and listening, you must to listening music in English for long time, watch videos in English with subtitles in English to relation the words, download English programs to offer much options to learn of funny way like: conversations in English, grammar, listening and speaking. An important thing is that in some cases is necessary to break the rules to consider a best way to learn English. All these events will help to improve our skills and to strengthen all our weaknesses.
Sincerely,
Bryan Herrera

Response to “The Ethics of Human Enhancement” Bryan Herrera Yachay Tech

Response to “The Ethics of Human Enhancement”
Could the human enhancement make unconscious people without capabilities to think or to make decisions? In the article “The Ethics of Human Enhancement”, Andy Miah explains about the progress of the science to improve the capabilities of the people through brain modifications. However, Andy mentions the possible consequences and unethical responses to would come with the use of several methods. I agree with Miah because there are scientific methods that have moral concern due to that some methods interfering in the reasoning capabilities, but I believe that Miah should give more examples about the possible consequences of unethical methods. Andy Miah argues that “Recent scientific advancements increasingly allow humans to improve everything from memory to appearance” (Miah, 2016). He mentions that the science suggest several ways where the technology could improve the capabilities of people through brain modifications. Miah give us to know some points of view about human enhancement. First, he talks about of capacity of technological methods to increase the memory, reasoning capabilities and alterations in the appearance of a person to make more attractive and distinct (Miah, 2016). Second, Miah talks about the biology like the main branch to manipulate something at will because the biology has become one of the main field of science where the researches have allowed the development of society. Third, he talks about the most important point to achieve a goal that are the means by which the people improve themselves (Miah, 2016). It has a lot coherence because all in the life has a beginning and an end but between this, always there is a process where people learn and learn every day more, introduce knowledge to the mind, gained experience and therefore they are formed as person. In this point, Miah give us an example about this important topic. If a mountaineer reaches a summit using
9
a helicopter, it isn’t a true achievement because in this method the mountaineer doesn’t do any effort to improve your skills and therefore he cannot gained experience (Miah, 2016). Fourth, Miah talks about ethical concerns, he explains that “this argument holds that some uses may be morally undesirable forms of enhancement because, essentially, they transform the patient into someone else” (Miah, 2016). It wants to say that there are certain methods to enhancement that don’t follow the right principles of the human ethics. Basically, he talks about psychopharmacological substances that people can use to feeling relaxed, calm and improve their skills, for example: antidepressant medications or use of drugs. These methods are ethical concern because in the beginning it could help to the people in their reasoning capabilities but it could bring major consequences later. However, the questions would be if people are prepared to accept these changes and forget the familiar methods like education, exercise, good diet because of any way, it can transform to people who would act unconsciously and reflect serious disabilities later. Therefore, human enhancement can give a lot facilities to the people in short time. On one site, the science advancement in the human enhancement would be a dream fulfilled to many people because the science offers methods that could help in the health of people and it would be very convenient to everyone because it improves the lifestyle of people and it increasing the lifetime of people. On the other hand, the human enhancement relates with some unethical methods that people could use to achieve anything. These methods are an ethical concern because it could interfere in the behavior of a person due to the unconscious brain modification. Of this way, some enhancements might promote success early in life, but lead to serious disability later like secondary effects.
10
The purpose of the article is to show how the science advancements offer to develop multiple capabilities in the people and even to know the importance to be well informed about the disadvantages that some methods could produce in a person. It is a topic of much importance due to the power of interest that it produces in people. But, is the article presented of a right way to produce interest and intrigue in people? For this reason is necessary evaluate the article point by point to understand very well. First, we started talking about the credibility of the article like the main point to produce interest in readers. In the case of this article, we can look true things about the topic because Andy Miah talk about real events in the society and the possible consequences. So, it article is very credible. Second, organization and publication present a good structure because it begins with a short introduction about the topic. Then, he talks about the human enhancements through the use of science advancements, he talk about how the science and technology can help us to develop skills. After that, he talks about the possible disadvantages and ethical concern to use some methods. Even he shows the respective supporting details and then he expresses a short conclusion. So the organization is very good because is easy to follow the ideas expressed in the article. Also he uses an understandable language with a mix between known and unknown words. Finally, we can look Bias (counter argument) because in the beginning, he talks about good things about human enhancement but then, he talks about the ethical consequences to use methods to improve capabilities in the easiest way. In conclusion, Miah’s article is good for many reasons. The structure of the article is good due to the organization of the ideas to tell us about the topic and he supports this with details and any examples. The information that he offers us is based specially in the topic and the way to express the ideas is very coherent because he begins with the pros of the science advancements in the life of people and then he
11
mentions Bias or counter arguments to show the disadvantages to use possible methods. Also, the information is true because, he underlying your points of view and it draws the attention of people. The thesis refers to the moral concern due to the methods that produce unethical changes in people. For these reasons, I agree with the information provided for the author of the article because he has coherence in the things that he says and he presents real information supported with details and possible recommendations for people. However, will be recommendable that Miah expresses examples of the real life of people who failed or achieved great things with human enhancement because it would produce more interest in people to know deeper information about the topic.

LITERARY ANALYSIS
14
Explain the relationship between plot and theme in “Happy Endings” A happy ending is linked to a happy death. What is behind a happy ending?. Margaret Atwood’s literature has a different way to write where she offers some short stories with happy endings. The stories approaches in two characters as john and Mary who have to live interesting stories but these approach just in a end that is the death. For example: In the storie F, the more interesting end, the final of the paragraph, Atwood does emphasis in their death writing: “John and Mary die. John and Mary die. John and Mary die”. The way that Margaret Atwoods introduces her topic is very interesting but maybe the ending is monotonous because each storie have a different context but a same final. Therefore, the theme of the stories is death. Although each storie has a different topic, the ending always is the same. For example: In the storie A, Atwood tells the storie of John and Mary since they got married until they eventually die. In the storie B, Atwood tells a storie where Mary falls in love with John but he is very bad with her, so she decides to drink aspirins with whiskey and she dies. John gets married with other woman and they follow the storie A to end in death too. All the stories are similar in Atwood’s literature. However, why the author chooses this ending in all short storie?. The personality and attitude of each person can influence in stories. For example: a typical phrase that Atwood uses is “continues as in A” to focused in the main idea, maybe monotonous. Therefore, there is a relationship between plot and theme. Atwood knows perfectly as give to know his main point because in ech paragraph she tells the same ening that is the death. However, it linked to some short stories to give more sense to the literary essay and it linked enhances the main point of the stories. Perhaps, reading the same ending is boring but it is improved through the topic of each storie. So, the 15
stories are connected of an elegant way and it is important to show a complete structure in the literary. Therefore, the stories show a context very interesting full of tragedy. Atwood begins each storie with a new topic and different development of the same. For example: The storie A, John and Mary get married, they learn new experiences and finally they die. The storie B, Mary falls in love with John but he not, so they form a dangerous relationship about an imposible love. The storie C, John falls in love with Mary where John is an older man than Mary who is a teen woman. The storie F, Mary and John are agents in Canada where they die together but it is another ending. In conclusion, the literary essay of Atwood is very interesting because she tells short stories with a different topic to produce that people focused in the stories. Perhaps the ending is monotonous but it improves with the short introduction. Of this way, the relationship between plot and theme is important and very neccesary in the literary to produce more interesting in readers. However, the essay’s tittle “Happy Endings reflects other ideas when people read it for first time. Therefore, for Margaret Atwood, the concept to happy ending relate live in loving and die in loving without matter the problems and mistakes in the past.

Interpretation of the Painting "Alcoholism"
P.Kuczynski 2006
Nowadays, artists have started to use art as paints, songs, etc. to conscientize society about the problems that the addiction represents. In this case, the painting “Alcoholism” by Pawel Kuczynski shows an amazing representation of how alcoholism can “hook” individuals and make them dependent. The author uses a proper technique and the correct hue tone to express the idea. Pawel Kuczynski was born in Poland on August 12, 1976. He has won 95 prizes for his satirical images and cartoons since he specialized in graphics at the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznan. He started his art in 2004 and in 2005 he won an award from the Polish Caricaturists Association. He lives and works as a police officer in Poland. The combination of these elements makes the painting an iconic picture and clearly achieves the objective to conscientize society about addiction problems. In the painting we can see, first of all a person who is drinking a bottle of a red liquid that represents alcohol, also this person is using a jacket to protect himself or
19
herself for the cold. You can also see that the more the person drinks, a hook tied to a hook come close and slowly approaches to his or her mouth, Around the person we can see a dark place and the only light is produced by the bottle. The person drinks the contents of the bottle with great enthusiasm by which he or she raises it above his or her head reflecting a great despair. Also we can see that is this person has a sickly skin color. This painting shows and presents a lot of symbolism. It is especially hard for those one that have problems with alcohol or with any addiction, this painting produces in us a feel of depression and isolation, especially because the person seems like he or she doesn’t care anymore the damage that they suffer from drinking that bottle. The empty and dark room that surrounds this person represents how is his or her life, lack of hope and empty of happiness, this room appear as the greatest fear of the person, loneliness is the only thing that has, the bottle shines because the person gives it a special value and that liquid becomes the thing that was missing so much. The author is capable to express a lot of things with a little painting and give to people an open field to think and imagine anything. Just in the moment when we saw the painting for first time, our body shuddered at the understanding the meaning of painting because it is a real conflict that people have to face in the daily life where people have to decide between two options: taking the right decision or enter into the world of addiction. Furthermore, exists a feeling of impotence to know that the alcohol can interned within our body and control our will without asking us to do anything. Now, thanks to the painting, we have a lot of feelings stored in our memories that will be useful to know the facility by which people can enter in a bad world where is difficult to get out. Of this way we can be conscious of damage at which we are exposed and think many times before making a decision.
20
Only the bottle looks red, one of the meanings of this color is that it represents the power, the liquid called alcohol is a power that subjects the person to an addiction, when a person is dominated by this power his will is lost Until they lose the consciousness and that person can commit actions that the person fails to remember. The hook is attached directly to the bottle, it does not need any force that pulls it like a fishing rod, and this represents the ease as many people can be hooked to the alcohol and once subjected, people cannot be free easily and even there are foundations to help them get out of this problem. In the painting we can see that the bottle is not supported with both hands, we can observe only one hand, this represent the easy with that a person can get what he wants, even that there is no impediment or law that prevents it even a bottle of alcohol is more cheap that a book. There is not a face visible in the painting, for example it can be a woman or a boy or a man, this represents how alcohol is a problem for society, as any member of a family could be a victim of this addiction, which in many countries. In conclusion we can say that if one has willpower and if you want, you can stop taking with the help of support centers family understanding. The painting is capable to produce some feelings in our body like: depression, isolation or impotence at understanding what it represents in the life of a person and the facilities by which people can to enter in a world of addiction. This painting shows a great impact to society on how free is to have a bottle of alcohol as a fishing rod and how people can be trapped in that hook so that their consumption is progressive, and also as people we have the freedom to break the rules of society by consuming alcohol and causing chaos in the family. One deduction at the end, is a reasoning of how an addiction can produce in a person the false sense of hope and happiness while in the reality it is destroying a life.

FINAL RESEARCH PROYECT ESSAY
23
The Relationship between Personal and Professional Ethics Bryan Stalin Herrera Romero Yachay Tech
24
Abstract This essay is focused on defining the relationship between personal and professional ethics. As a first point, this essay shows the definition of personal ethics like the values and ethics codes that are instilled in childhood. As a second point it defines the concept of professional ethics like rules and regulations that people have to follow in a workplace. Then, these ethics are linked to define the relationship between both like a true challenge for people due to the possible advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, this research required taking in consideration the opinion of distinct people according to their needs and experience of life to obtain a reasonable result and to make the corresponding decisions. According to the survey given to 20 people of the Yachay Tech University, it determinates that people prefer to realize unethical business in a workplace for necessity due to that they receive any kind of bribe instead to prioritize and support their personal and professional ethics. Therefore, the solution is to develop a program to guarantee professional help to people who are vulnerable to making bad decisions due to ambition. The way to help them would be through motivational speaking and possible recommendations. However, there exist multiple problems to requiring making right decisions due to that people are vulnerable in a workplace because each person controls different important information of a company. Also, employees are not taking in account interference in business matters and therefore they feel excluded from the professional environment and they can tend to making bad decision to harm a lot of people. Finally, a relationship between personal and professional ethics must be present in all environments in a society because it is essential to form real human being with capabilities to reflect both personal and professional ethics.
25
Relationship between Personal and Professional Ethics Marco, who is a worker in a telecommunication company, needs information contained in the computer of Tomas who is the accountant of this company. As Tomas isn’t in the office, Marco decides to enter in the computer of Tomas with a known password to take the necessary documents but when he looks that Tomas is doing dealings with the competition. This event gives rise to a difficult dilemma where the worker does not know if he should report about the dealings with his boss or not say anything because he could be accused to violate the privacy of a member of the company and obtain confidential information (MobilinkCareers, 2013). Furthermore, is possible that illegal business can be conducted for company heads. In this case, does it make sense to give up your personal ethics to benefit the status or condition of a company whose businesses are not ethical, just to keep your job? What would you do? Ethics is an important topic to everyone around the world due to multiple troubles to require the decision between a right or wrong situation according to the ideas or beliefs of people. However, there are a lot factors that can interfere in making decisions. On one side, there is the personal ethics to show the moral and values of a person. On the other hand, the professional ethics where people follow imposed rules for a company or as member of a profession. The relationship between personal and professional ethics influence strongly in the making of decisions when a professional dilemma demands wisdom to choose between a right or wrong thing where people give up to their ethics due to any kind of bribe received. First, personal ethics refers to a person’s personal or self-created values and codes of conduct. According to web site TheyDiffer that is (a page conformed for writers and contributors who try to explain of the more simple way the differences that people have trouble to understand about events of the daily life), they say that “ethics
26
are instilled in an individual, with a large part having been played by their parents, friends, and family (TheyDiffer, 2015). In childhood people learn some values that are reflected in each event in the future. For example the more outstanding values are the following: People will always speak the truth, people will respect all elder people and will never hurt anyone purposely and they will follow all their values and conduct codes. Of this way, personal ethics is an aspect very important to form people with capacities to think, to reason and to act according to their principles and beliefs where they act of efficient way to know the difference between what is good and what is bad. Second, professional ethics are the values and principles that are introduced to an individual in a professional organization to benefit them. Professional ethics involve some imposed rules for a company or as member of a profession where each employee is strictly to follow these because they do not have a choice. According to the web site Buzzle that is a formerly popular article directory, used primarily for online article marketing and self-publishing yet that is a trusted source of information, they talk about the work of employees in a company, they say that “Your personal views and concerns about any topic will not be of much help in a corporate setting, how well you follow the protocol of the company is what will matter here (Buzzle, 2016). For example, employees have to respect some rules in a company like: punctuality to get to work, time management to work, no gossip in office time and safeguard company privacy. This is the most important point for a company because it must be a priority all time. Also there are companies to ask their employees sign a legal document guaranteeing that they do not discuss about work issues outside of the company. The most of companies demand respect to ethical codes because is very important have faithful employees inside of a company who can follow imposed rules and treat the business with the major confidentiality.
27
Therefore, the relationship between personal and professional ethics is a true challenge due to multiple events that require decision-making. Is a true challenge because there are several differences between personal and professional ethics due to that are two different environments that respect different ethical codes. According to Saipriya Iyer, who is a writer of web site Buzzle, she says that “This subject is highly perceptive, since every individual has a different perspective. However, what is more important is that you learn to follow these ethics in your personal as well as professional life (Buzzle, 2016). Therefore, it is impossible to say that one is better than the other or that we can follow one and not necessarily the other not necessarily because following both is essential, for this makes better human being for themselves and for the society. For example: if you work in big company and you look that the way to operate of the company is not correct because there are wrong or illegal business. In this moment you must to apply both personal and professional ethics to resolve this problem. Personal ethics is useful to know that is incorrect what the company is doing and not continue doing this. On the other hand, professional ethics are necessary to report these bad acts and getting things done right. The relationship between personal and professional ethics is a topic very controversial for people because there exist both advantages and disadvantages within this relationship. However, it is necessary to know what is correct and what is incorrect previously to making decisions according to thinkings and beliefs. Furthermore, it is very necessary to know the opinion of people about this topic and try to search for more pertinent solutions. The best way to know the opinion of people is through survey where the people help to answer some questions according to their opinion, beliefs or experiences that they have lived in their life and through these making decisions to trying resolve the ethical dilemmas in a professional environment. The survey was given to 20 people between students and employees in Yachay Tech
28
University who offer their opinions and knowledges. The questions were focused in real life experiences where survey recipients had to make hard decisions both personal and professional. The first question was: What do you think that must be more important? (Figure 1). The second question was: Why do you believe that employees are fired from a company? (Figure 2) and the third question was an example about an ethical dilemma in workplace (Figure 3) where people answered this according to their ethics. The survey is a very important point in the research because it asks to know many different perspectives of people who give your point of view according to life experiences. The more interesting question was the number three, where the surveyed had to put in the place of the character and response according to your beliefs. The shown story was about an unemployed person who had the responsibility to maintain your family. To a few time, this person achieves a good work with a lot of advantages and benefits but a day the employee receives a proposal to makeup important documents to win a lot of money of a quick way but illegal. The options to response were: first, thinking in your family and to accept the business, second not accept the business and third to denounce the boss. The result was awesome when the most of people, approximately 55% of people, choose the first option, therefore, the most of people prefer to give up to their personal and professional ethics to search the benefit of their families no matter what way. Therefore, it is necessary to search a solution to resolve this problem where people give up to their personal and professional ethics to comply to imposed rules to benefit to other people. According to the results, people should receive the right help and recommendations to know: how must they reaction to a problem, situation or dilemma.
29
Of this way, the plan would be to build a program where people can receive professional help. This program will have many benefits and facilities because it will offer motivational speaking in companies, factories, stores or offices. For example: people can receive motivational speaking about: personal and professional ethic, psychology, values or rights to act front a difficult situations. Even they might have the help to this program to sue a person or company when they are victims of threat. Perhaps the right help could be the first step for that the people keep their personal ethics above all and choose the right response. However, it is clear that is very difficult to relate a professional environment with a personal environment because the personal opinions and thinking of the employees is not important and it does not contribute in the purposes of a company and it can be counterproductive for the business. Of this way it is difficult to relate personal and professional ethics to making decisions because in some cases people are not heard due to that the companies are in charge to know what is better for the business. According to Stacy Zeiger, who is a writer of the website Chron that try matters of small business, she say that “Often a lack of ethics appears because of poor planning and faults elsewhere in the business. If employees are expected to meet unreachable goals, they could engage in unethical behavior to reach those goals (Zeiger, 2016). Also, if a lack of ethics in business becomes public knowledge, the company loses credibility and restore its image take a lot of time and money because customer confidence is the most important point for a company. Despite of that, this way to think can be changed through the proposed program to offer the right help and recommendations inside of companies. To prevent unethical behavior, set realistic goals for employees and a factor very important is consistently monitor employee performance to avoid that people can be bribed for administrates of
30
other companies or to avoid possible temptations to making bad decisions. Of this way the purpose of a company can be improved and directed all in legal ways where all the business are backed of great privilege and can be supported for all the members of company. In conclusion, ethics is an important topic to everyone around the world due to multiples troubles to require the election between a right or wrong situation. Is necessary to analyze each point since two different perspectives: personal ethics that refers to values and ethical codes of a person and professional ethics whose values and principles that are introduced in a professional organization. The relationship between both is a true challenge because required that people are conscious of what is right and what is wrong at the moment to making decisions. However, there are points against of this relationship when employees are vulnerable to receive any kind of bribe of the competence and doing illegal business due to bad direction of company heads. Finally, there exist multiple dilemmas in the daily life, especially in the professional environment where employees have to face some problems and reflected your agree or disagree about anything according to personal and professional ethics.
