Rosa Cecilia Medina Yachay Tech University Imbabura, Ecuador December 6, 2016 Dear Portfolio Reader: My name is Cecilia and I hope you appreciate my English Language Portfolio. I will begin talking a little bit about myself. Since I was a child I wished to speak English because I heard my aunt from the United States talking in English. I liked to see that she had mastered two languages. So, I thought that I wanted to do that someday and I used to study English on my own. My father bought books and CDs to learn English, but these resources were not enough to gain fluency in this language. Before I came to college the educational system that I had did not provide a good education in English language. However, in Yachay I succeeded in improving my fluency in this language. I think that this language is very important, but arduous to learn. There are some terms of this language that I do not know yet, so I know that I must continue learning. I started my formal education in English at school when I was 10 years old, and when I entered to Yachay I began learning English at level two with an amazing teacher, Guadalupe MagaĂąa. I think she was the best English teacher that I had because she was very gentle and put a lot of effort into making us learn. When I finished my level four English course, I attended to a presentation of the students of level six and I thought that this level would be very exciting. The students who were speaking during the presentation seemed so confident and cheerful with their developed skills in that course. So, at that time I hoped to stay at this level and give my best effort to enjoy the learning. This portfolio has my best work during my level six English course in Yachay Tech. I have included four essays and a research project that I made during my level six English course. I will tell you some of my favorite works. My first essay was a response essay and I appreciated to write this because it was about education. I chose to write about education because I not only had to read articles about this topic I could add arguments with my own experience. Also, in the crash course we learned a lot about the current education system and specially the great educational system of Finland. I think that was very interesting and helpful to talk about an exciting topic. The second essay was a literary analysis. This was little difficult to write because we made it during class time. So, we had short time to understand the reading, make the analysis and write the essay. Although the time seemed to be not enough, I could understand the reading and make the essay successfully. The third essay was in group, and it was about a painting of Salvador Dali. I loved to write this essay because the painter Salvador Dali is a great artist with a curious personality. The picture was the


Corpus Hypercubus, an impressive art because of its meaning that involve science and religion. Also, I enjoyed working collaboratively with my classmates, we could add a little of creativity of each one and mix our writing style to make a good essay. And my last assignment was a research paper, I chose to make this about a principal ethical, the openness on science. I think that it is important to pay attention to this topic because it can help to develop science and economy in the world. While I did these different works, I felt more confident about my writing and my speaking. When I liked the topic about I was writing I wrote better because I felt passion with what I was doing. However, I know I have a big road to continue learning yet. I think that you can realize that I develop some skills in my English. The homework that my teacher sent us helped me to write and speak better. My teacher was strict, so I think that it influenced a bit to put more effort to the assignments. My teacher used to say that in Level six she did not have to teach us some grammar. So, it made me feel like I had to put additional time to remember and learn something that is supposed that I had to know. Also, when I wrote some assignment I thought that it was well writing, however my friends always helped me with comments to improve it. I had the opportunity to read some writing of my classmates and I could include some new words that they used. I also could admire their own style to write. Also, when they spoke in their presentations I could see their creative way to explain different topics. In addition, the classes of career were in English too. This made us practice more and improve our writing and speaking. Because of this I practiced more and I looked for help with my aunt from United States. Sometimes when she called, we spoke in English and in this way, she helped me to improve and I felt more courageous. Finally, I would like to thank you again for reading my portfolio letter. In high school I had bad English teachers and sometimes I did not have any teacher. Therefore, I appreciated the opportunity that Yachay Tech give us to learn English with native teachers. Also, I know that I can defend myself in my career and continue to learn.

College Education Does Not Guarantee That You Will Get a Good Job “The direction in which education starts a man will determine his future in life”, -Plato. College education can give the necessary tools to people who desire to be competent professionals, but owning a college degree does not guarantee the return of more money. The article ``Don’t buy the hype, college education is not an investment´´ by George Leef, Juris Doctor and writer of several books and articles about education, addresses about the wrong idea that some people have concerning to college education. He assures that the idea that having a college degree is required to have better jobs does not happen in our current world. And I agree with his argument because many people believe that a college degree will ensure a better future, but it does not work this way. The reality is different and shocking for many professionals who often do not get work in their area. This is because our world has different problems like saturated labor market and incompetent professionals. Therefore, people should admit that college education is not the key to a better labor future because we have a saturated employment and people who get a college degree without passion.

First, Leef (2013) reminds us that to have a college degree does not ensure a rich life. This because there are different problems that stop success of professionals. He claims that Universities do wrong in trying to implant the thought of the higher education is a favorable investment. This is implanted in the minds of young people and makes them believe that a college degree is necessary to have a good job. This causes that a lot of students go to college just to get a better job after, and they do not go with true passion for their profession. So, when they finish college education some of they confront with a dreadful reality. This sad reality is related with a job that they do not

like or earning very little money. To make his idea more understandable, Leef (2013) provides an example of three students. The first student has excellent grades at college, the second has bad grades and the third student takes particular course instead of to enroll to college. The student who dedicates a lot his education achieves a better job, but the student who put a poor effort in his college education gets a bad job in a game store. And the student who dedicates to particular courses to improve specific skills achieves a better job like the first student. From these examples is easy to realize that having a higher education does not assure financial gain, but work on enhancing our skills and having more knowledge could help significantly to achieve it.

Therefore, in the opinion of Leef (2013) concerning to college education, he says that having financial success depends of your passion on what you do. To be committed with our college education or take particular courses could be more productive to get a good job. In addition, we can see examples of people who did not have a college degree, but they have success with their own business or a better work. Till Groß in his TED talk `` Forget University? Four steps to design your own education ´´, describes the steps that he took to learn by himself and made him prosper (2014). Those steps are related to be focus and in love with what we do. Therefore, if we want to be successful in any area of our life, we need to dedicate to this all our devotion and give our best effort. Actually, this is not a new idea; however, we used to forget that and we put more attention to what is saying the majority. I think that we need to take root in our minds that we can achieve a good life just if we dedicate to what we want to do.

Third of all, the article written by Leef (2013) is well structured and easy to follow to comprehend, but it could be better if he has included more updated data like statistics or experiments. The author uses a formal writing, with seriousness which gives more credibility to his message. Furthermore, he shows an inclination in favor to the idea that college education does not ensure a good job. However, his arguments are little poor because he uses simple examples to prove what he is saying is true. And he could investigate and add real information to make his writing more convincing. In addition, the article is interesting to all people who care about college education like parents, teachers or government that work on making laws of education. This is because to have a college degree and not a job represents a problem of concern. So, I think that this article is good, but it lacks some relevant information.

To conclude, we should become aware of the position of Leef (2013) about college education because it accurate to the reality. We need to change our ideas and choose our way with passion. In addition, Leef wrote his article with a positive tone, and giving simple examples to make us understand that college education is not necessary to have a good job. Although some people with higher college education has high wages that`s not mean that you have to have a college degree to earn a lot of money, because the people who have this kind of success is passionate people with their work. Also, taking the examples of others successful people without college education, is easy to see the importance of doing things with enthusiasm. So, if we want to have a college degree or not, it does not matter because what is really important is the hard work that we put in.

From this story, I can realize that it is unusual that love is what holds a marriage together. That is to say, many marriages can be together for infinite reasons. Since ancient times, even today we can find couples who are still together in marriage for different reasons and none is for love. Kate Chopin, wrote “The Story of An Hour”. This story is about a woman, Mrs. Mallard, who receives a terrible news. This news was that her husband had died. Mrs. Mallard took a strange attitude to the news. Instead of feeling sad, she rejoiced. The story “The Story of An Hour” by Chopin shows a reality of some marriages using a somewhat funny story. in a funny way. The story unfolds in a strange and fun atmosphere because Mrs. Mallard reacts in a way contrary to the expected when somebody hears serious news. This story presents an unusual anecdote of a marriage that shows not to be happy. This is because the supposed widow rejoices at the loss of her husband. When somebody that we love dies it is normal for us to feel depressed by the loss. However, in this story Mrs. Mallard experiences pleasant feeling after knowing that her husband has died. It´s as if she feels free from a jail. This setting shows that her marriage was unhappy and she had the desire to scape to this situation. Although the other people feel sad for her loss, she does not care about it and she wants to show a triumphant attitude. She feels the release of an unhappy marriage. “The story of an Hour” was written in 1894, so we can transport ourselves to that time and imagine the atmosphere in which this story unfolded. Also, Kate Chopin was widow before she wrote this story. Thus, she as a single woman had liberty to express the reality of a marriage though her written. Through her main character, Mrs. Mallard, she expresses that she has body and soul free. This means that in that epoch the

maleness had predominated and women just lived with the desire to be free. Fortunately, in our time there is more freedom for women. Therefore, women in a marriage could feel frustration, but they have the option to divorce. They do not have to wait until their husbands die. If they have an unhappy marriage they must divorce. Finally, Chopin (1984) shows a frustrating view of marriage according to its time. This is because at that time, machismo prevailed over the freedom of women. Chopin as a widowed woman, had the freedom to express herself through her writing. Her character Mrs. Mallard enjoys hearing about the news of her husband’s death. Most people think that a marriage is united by love, but this story shows that sometimes love is not a requirement to keep a marriage together. In ancient times women felt trapped in their wives’ roles. However, in our time it is easier to leave a frustrated marriage.

Corpus Hypercubus: The Difficulty of Understanding Science and Religion “The atomic explosion of August 6, 1945, shook me seismically. Thenceforth, the atom was my favorite food for thought.” Salvador Dalí Scientific concepts are clearly represented in this famous painting: at first named Crucifixion. This piece of art emphasizes the mathematical shapes, hypercube, and for this reason it was well-known as Corpus Hypercubus. This was created by Salvador Dalí. He was born in 1904, and he was a Spanish surrealist painter. Moreover, there is an interesting fact about him and that could explain his genuine interest in the mind and the supernatural world, and it is that his older brother was named Salvador too. His brother died some months after the birth of the artist. And Salvador Dalí grew up with the idea that he was the reincarnation of his brother. Dalí produced several famous paintings that settle him as a great surrealist painter. However, Dalí’s interest about surrealism decreased because of the amazing discoveries on science that occurred during the epoch between 1940 and 1950. His interest increased with the bombing of Hiroshima in 1945. And the astonishment of this event left him a great ambition to resolve the mysteries of science and religion. His passion to understand those issues make him create several paintings considered his masterpieces. In the Corpus Hypercubus, the artist put a big effort to represent the closeness that science and religion has. Therefore, the Corpus Hypercubus is one of the most popular paintings made by Salvador Dalí, because it has a modern meaning of the crucifixion, a creative use of mathematics on art and a resourceful portrayal of the relationship between science, religion and art. Corpus Hypercubus could be interpreted with certain connotations according its details. This famous painting was made with oil on canvas and the canvas measures 194.5 x 124 cm (Hornik, 7 August 2010). In addition, this painting has a main approach to Christ

suspended in a cross of cubes, Dalí uses his imagination and colors to carry the painting beyond what is realistic. The artist uses Math to tell that there is no fulfilled to the holiest Trinity. (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) because it lacks an important element that is Mary. Therefore, faith is four dimensional. The painting shows the past, present and future of Christ. Mary in front of Christ indicates Christ's birth, the cross symbolizes the present that is the crucifixion and cross floating indicates future that is Christ's future resurrection (Piderit & Morey, 2012, p.234). The painting presents as if it is moving in a parallel movement from the cross, while from another angle it seems that Christ move towards the cross. This can represent the Christian belief that Christ know everything and sees everything. The chessboard represents different ways that human being can take. The piece of art painted by Salvador Dalí has a strong relationship between “Corpus Hypercubus” and religion. The major important part of the painting is the body of Christ. The body of Christ is elevated on the air representing the most famous scene “The crucifixion”. At the bottom of the painting Mary, the mother of Jesus is seeing his body. The feeling that this scene give to all painting is faith. The Latin cross is also an important part of the painting, is placed in the ground just below the Hypercubus. The entire painting demonstrate that Salvador Dalí was inspired by the religion at the moment when he creates this masterpiece. The religion was a great part of his life. The “Corpus Hypercubus” also had a heavy relationship between it and science. Salvador Dalí was amazed by all new discoveries of his age. He tried to represent all of his passion by the sciences and he included into the painting. Salvador Dalí expressed his passion by the latest discoveries about atomic disintegration, quantum mechanics and the fourth dimension. As the body of Christ is the major representation of religion, the unfolded Hypercubus is the major representation of science. The unfolded tesseract dimension had recently been discovered by a mathematician. Salvador Dalí take

advantage of this discovery to use in his painting as the representation of the cross where Christ was crucified. Geometry is also used when Dalí painted the shadow of the unfolded tesseract on the ground. These are the ways by how Dalí tried to represent his love by science, just as he did with other paintings. Conclusion In conclusion Salvador Dalí was one of the most representative painters of his age. His pieces of art created a new theory of art that combined religion, mathe matics,

science, and Catalan culture in an attempt to revive classical values and techniques. Nuclear mysticism was named the new art theory created by Salvador Dalí. “Corpus Hypercubus” represent all the new concept presented by Dalí with the best mix between science and religion. “Corpus Hypercubus” has caused a lot of controversy. A lot of viewers see this painting as a good representation of the crucifixion of Jesus. At the same time, other viewers think that this painting violate his beliefs. Hence that this masterpiece has get so much fame in the world of art.

College Education Does Not Guarantee That You Will Get a Good Job “The legalization of marijuana is not a dangerous experiment- the prohibition is the experiment, and it has failed dramatically, with millions of victims all around the world”, -Sebastian Marincolo. My neighborhood, a gentle and hardworking man, was killed by a guy who was dominated under the effects of drugs. In Ecuador drugs are criminalized, but people can buy easily some drugs. Also, the criminalization of drugs causes the increase of violence and criminal market. In the countries in which drugs are criminalized, the rates of violence, and criminal market are higher. This because there are drug users who can easily access to buy drugs, and people who take advantage of the prohibition and create a world of terror because of the high income they get from selling drugs. Therefore, drugs should be legalized in order to decrease violence, criminal market and focus on the social and economic problem that causes the use of drugs. If drugs are legalized, users of drugs could pay less for drugs. Therefore, they do not have to steal to get money for drugs. Dan Baum, in his article “How to win the war on drugs” says that a strategy to avoid drug use is to keep drug prices high. But, I disagree with that because user of drugs will do whatever to get drugs. Legalization of drugs allow to the government control the criminal market. So, the government can cut prices, but it is necessary to instill in citizenship values and responsibility regarding the use of drugs. That is to say we give freedom to the citizenship, but also we worry giving knowledge and responsibility about the use of drugs.

A big problem that causes death of innocent people is the criminal market of drugs. This problem could decrease by legalization of drugs. Baum says “Most of what we hate and fear about drugs- the violence, the overdoses, the criminality- derives from prohibition” (Baum, 2016). I agree with Baum because people working in the criminal market take advantage of the criminalization of drugs to earn more money and grow. So, prohibition creates a new problem instead of solve the use of drugs. The leaders of countries put their attention in jailing users instead of thinking on the reasons for why there are users of drugs. Legalizing drugs is not all the work that needs to be done, the government should focus on solving the social and economic problems. Baum says that “to realize benefits from ending drug prohibition will take more than simply declaring that drugs are legal” (Baum, 2016). I agree with this because we need to create a society free of drugs by responsibility of each one. It is important to find the causes that provoke people to seek to use drugs. And once found the different causes we must work to eliminate them. We need to focus in the well being of every citizen in order to avoid they down on drugs. To conclude, legalization of drugs could give us benefits such as stop the criminal market, decrease violence and focus on solving the real problems. We have evidence that the prohibition of drugs does not work. So, we need to prove with legalization. We need to open our eyes to reality. That is to say, to realize that the real problem is in the social and economic situation of each citizen. Is necessary support legalization to focus on creating a wealthy society. Can you imagine a world without drugs because each one decide do not do it?

Abstract This paper explains the importance of supporting scientific openness. Also, this shows three benefits that stand out in the application of openness. Scientific openness is free and full access to all scientific advances and current researches, and also it gives us the facility to use the results of researches. Even though the scientific community works under another system, scientific openness opens the door to new and better opportunities. Knowledge transfer will be driven by scientific openness, also the quality and efficiency of the research process could be heightened. Another important benefit is the possibility to make better discoveries and share it for the interest of the world.

Support Scientific Openness is Needful to Create a Favorable Impact in The Academic World “He who works with the door open gets kinds of interruptions, but he also occasionally gets clues as to what the world is and what might be important” -Richard Hamming In the academic world, there are obstacles to access to some scientific data and create more knowledge. These obstacles are: the necessity of paying to access to certain information, and the scientific data that is kept in secret by some scientists. That is to say that the scientific community is not respecting an important ethical principle that is the scientific openness. This ethical principle involves aspects like sharing data, resources and ideas with others, also it allows to use this data and resources with others. In addition, this allows to create new scientific knowledge through collaboration with scientists and people outside the laboratory. For this reason, in scientific openness is important to put all data online and with an accessible format for reuse. Although the majority of the scientific community does not work with this system, openness science’s practices have gained popularity because of its benefits. Benefits such as collaboration between scientists interested in the same topic. So, scientists can work efficiently and find faster solutions and we can achieve the strengthening of the relationship between science and society. Therefore, scientific openness must be fostered because this ethical principle can help to enhance the knowledge transfer, increase the quality of research and find more effective solutions to the common problems of our society. Scientific Openness may represent a hazard for researchers, however this system gives welfare to the world. Munthe and Welin, in their article “The Morality of Scientific Openness”, remind us that a problem among the scientific community is the

theft of confidential information and this gives good reasons to scientists to keep scientific data reserved just for them. (Munthe & Welin, 1996). However, withholding scientific data delay scientific progress and community involvement in important issues. This is because other scientists could be working in the same subject and the society is not aware of the scientific advances and the current solutions to different problems. This disadvantages also trigger that scientists waste their time and resources uselessly. As the mathematician, Richard Hamming says in his quote, working with the open door can bring you great advantages. That is to say, to achieve greater advances in the scientific world it is necessary to risk the scientific openness. Scientists can share their information with other scientists and non-scientific people, obtain collaboration and at the same time be aware of the current needs of the world. The enforcement of open science furnishes an intelligent strategy to boost the transfer of knowledge. This is because the open science eradicates the obstacles to access to scientific data. According to Morey et al, in their article “The Peer Reviewers’ Openness Initiative: incentivizing open research practices through peer review�. They asserted that the scientific data and experimental materials that are to the public make possible the greater progress of science. (Morey et al., 2016) So, while more information available we have more progress in science will occur. This because all these accessible resources grant to scientist and citizens the opportunity of re-use, check, duplicate and continue these studies. I agree with Morey because having all scientific data available, we can avoid spend money on repeat experiments. Also, thanks to the transfer of data we can improve the current works. Therefore, having access to scientific data, successful and failed experiments could help people to save resources and increase innovation. This is a better way to build fresh knowledge taking

advantage of the creativity and efficiency of all interested people. The society can achieve a great blueprint to create more new products and services. Another asset of scientific openness is the increase in the quality of research. This is possible thanks to the fact that scientist may know other scientists who might be interested in the same branch of research. There is also the possibility of improving the research because each scientist brings with his own innovative ideas. Munthe and Welin argued that the scientific openness is not accepted by some scientist because the incentive system has created a competitive environment for the recognition they get in the number of publications and patents. (Munthe & Welin, 1996). There are scientists that prefer to keep their scientific works on secret and publish in prestigious journals. In order to decrease this disadvantage, Angus Whyte et al in their article “Open Science in Practice: Research Perspective and Participation� say that it is necessary to inform about the risks and benefits of openness and to support further research with incentives in this system. (Whyte & Pryor, 2011). Therefore, scientists have reason to fear open science because the same scientific community has imposed a system of incentive that delays scientific progress. The scientific community should change this system to accelerate the scientific progress. Greater access to scientific data, can lead research processes on the right path. This is because the mistakes in the investigations could be more easily recognized by other scientists. So, the scientific integrity and the progress could be furthered. Therefore, scientists should confront the risk and adopt the scientific openness to improve the scientific world. For example, Juan Pablo Saucedo, my chemistry teacher, in a lecture has told us that in the last hundred years he has not come up with relevant scientific discoveries. In fact, the scientific community is worried about the fact that science is lagging. As I said earlier, the scientific community should adopt a different

strategy to encourage scientific development. Incentives to scientists should depend on the relevance of their findings and not on the number of papers that they publish in prestigious journals. In addition, Arza and Fressoli, in their article “Benefits and obstacles of openness in science: an analytical framework”, emphasize practicing openness and share with others in a scientific endeavor (Arza & Fressoli, 2016). So, scientists need to realize that open science is a smart way to go further in the world of science. Scientific openness could help to find brainy and improved solutions to issues of common interest. This is because if there are free access to scientific data, people inside and outside the scientific environment around the world can work collaboratively. Arza and Fressoli say that while more participants in the scientific world there will be more production of scientific knowledge.(Arza & Fressoli, 2016). This argument is accurate, but some scientist feel that their work will not be recognized neither compensated in open science. Open science could give to these scientists improved solutions for their research work and more ideas to continue innovating. Destro et al, in their article “Perspective on Open Science and scientific data sharing: an interdisciplinary workshop”, say that a modern democratic society should give the appropriate value to the scientific openness. (Destro Bisol et al., 2014). In scientific openness, we can found laboratories where scientists of the whole world cooperate and share their data. In addition, sharing the scientific knowledge allows society approach this knowledge. They can consult issues such as the latest advances in science about treatment of sickness or how to stop the advance of climate change. This could facilitate the construction of new questions and problems, and know the necessities of communities. In addition, this could allow the participation of society in scientific research and motivate people to participate in experiments and information gathering. Therefore,

whole world become acquainted about several important issues about the care of our planet, nature and human beings. This could help to find solutions faster working with the collaboration of scientists and non-scientists around the world. As the research, has demonstrated, scientific openness should be supported in order to increase the knowledge transfer, the quality of researches and to find more effective solutions to the problems of the world. There are obstacles that delay the complete adoption of openness science, for example the incentives that scientists receive for publishing in prestigious journals. Also, we know that there are some disadvantages that impede the enforcement of the scientific openness like the theft of scientific work. However, sharing scientific data show greater benefits to scientist around the world. Some of those benefits are the union of complement capabilities, avoiding doubling of effort. Also, the greater opportunities to improve the research obtaining more and better products and services. Accordingly, the system should encourage process of openness science instead of discourage the collaboration. So, are we ready to face the risks associated with scientific openness for the welfare of the world?
