Bryan Patricio Chachalo Gómez Yachay Tech University December, 15 2016 Dear Portfolio Reader, “Learning another language is not only learning different words for the same things, but learning another way to think about things” (Lewis, n.d.). Now you are probably going to read one of the most impromptu jobs you ever read, but I'm glad to say you will enjoy it. Actually, what I want to say is that it is not a typical academic essay, it is like my professor said a way to demonstrate my Ha-ha moments on English level 6. Although, at the beginning of writing, I really had no ideas about what to write, but when I remembered the phrase my professor said, the ideas came to my brain like the thunder in a storm. When people have to decide learning something new, it is really a weird moment because people usually are afraid of the unknown. Well in my case, learning English was not an option, but I really was afraid because I had never had a good instruction on this language. When I was in level 5 I remember that when I saw my grades of my first essay I was surprised. At the end of the essay my professor, printed a phrase that said “I’m disappointed”. And at this point I realized that if I could not do this essay maybe it was because I was not giving my best, and then I decided to improve my methods of study. Actually, I think I was promoted to level 6 because my professor took into account all the effort I did instead of my grades. When Level 6 started, I was not scared because my friends told me that at this level we would not make presentations, or anything like that, but hey, that was a little lie. My skills at the beginning of the semester were not so good. And I realize that when I received the grade of my research proposal which was my first essay at level 6. I remember that the grade was 7 plus something and at the moment I thought well it is not so bad. However, when the first presentations began I realized what I already knew that I could not perform presentations because I’m really shy, nervous, distracted, and more. After all the work my classmates and I had to do, we really improved all our skills on writing and speaking. All the improvement was really thanks to the effort not only of we the students, but the effort and the confidence of our professor with us too.

Accordingly, English Level 6 was one of the best English courses I had because in this level I could polish my skills of writing and could improve my skills on speaking what I believe is or was one of my main weaknesses. And taking into account my skills of writing I can affirm I’m not an excellent writer because as you know in the learning process there is not an end point where you can say "I already know everything about a subject" because as the saying says "The only thing I know is I know nothing." Thus, I can say I’m a good writer who with more work and effort will be better than before. “Success is achieved by developing our strengths, not by eliminating our weaknesses” (Marilyn Vos Savant, n.d.). This phrase represents the most important part of the learning process that is to develop our skills, making them stronger than our weaknesses. Now I want to explain more about my works in English level 6. The most important works on this level were the academic essays and the presentations. These essays were really a tool for improving my skills in English because when I did them, after receiving the grades I knew I needed to improve. I want to mention one of them that I think is very important which is the interpretation essay. This essay was performed in group, and I think it is very important because it allows you to work with other people that have different ideas or different perspectives to yours. So, it is necessary to be able to adapt to different opinions, which is what the world is based on. I believe that learning is like cooking because after all the disaster or all the effort that comes with cooking at the end you can enjoy the food. And, I'm sure that the learning process is the same way. After all the effort, you make by doing works like essays, presentations, after all that you really taste the result that in this case is the ability to speak this language. Finally, the only advice I can give you is that if the opportunity of learning something new appears before you, take it and you will see that with some effort you will get a great reward. And this reward will be better than money because learning something new opens your mind to the world of tomorrow. I took the opportunity and now, dear portfolio reader, I can affirm you that I'm enjoying the results. Sincerely,

Is Learning a Foreign Language Worth for Everyone Today? Bryan P. Chachalo Yachay Tech University

As Mandela once said “If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his own language, that goes to his heart.” In an increasingly interconnected world, knowledge of a foreign language can facilitate social and business transactions and provide knowledge crucial for success in a multicultural environment. Learning a foreign language can expand your knowledge and appreciation of the world, endow you with critical skills necessary in a global environment, provide opportunities for international internships and study abroad. And even, according to a recent article in The New York Times, increase your cognitive abilities and help prevent dementia (Yudhijit, 2012). Wong makes an emphasis on advantages of learning a foreign language by giving us some reasons of why that is important, but he does not consider the “cons” of learning a foreign language like the possible non-retribution of the investment. In this article, Wong is trying to persuade the reader to study a foreign language, which would give a lot of profits in business, travels and more. So, in this way students could face the new experiences of life in an easier way. Wong starts remarking the importance of a foreign language for school, where now it is a requirement or at least for international schools. Thus, according to the author one reason why some students study language is because they are required to. Another aspect that Wong exposes is that nowadays to get a promotion or even to keep the job many times does not depends on language skills, but why not getting those skills in a world with globalization in full swing? In order to respond this question, Wong mentions to David Goodman-Smith, who is a manage-partner at China Study Abroad. He said that having a competitive edge on your resume makes you more valuable, and skill like speaking mandarin is very attractive for an employer. Furthermore, Wong says that learning a foreign language can have familiar reasons. He arguments that many people hail from immigrant families, and it is a reason why is very common that second or third generation learn a different language than their predecessors. Thus, these generations need to

learn a foreign language to communicate with their family. Another important point, is that language and culture go hand in hand, so if you want to know about new cultures you need to be able to understand what is happening in these new environments. So, according to Wong “To truly understand a culture, you have to know what the people are talking about.” (Wong, 2013). Also, learning a foreign language make you smarter and help to keep mental health. According to Wong, a research published in New York Times shows that being bilingual make you smarter by improving your cognitive ability. According to a Harvard study, bilingual babies show better skills than monolingual babies. A University of Chicago study showed “thinking in a foreign language helps to reduce biases in your decision-making. There's even research that has demonstrated that being bilingual can help delay the onset of dementia and other symptoms of Alzheimer's disease” (Wong, 2013) Let’s face it, you are not limited to a specific motivation to study a foreign language, many people have different reasons. Wong mention to Mark from CET, who said there are two types of students: those who did it because they were turned on by the language and culture, and those that thought they could leverage their language skills into careers in business or government. I think the lines have blurred over the years, and it's harder to see two distinct groups." (Wong, 2013) I agree in many points with Wong, but the most important is that learning a foreign language is necessary to your work. I agree with this point because the author makes a highlight at the advantages of learning a foreign language in your work even if it was not very necessary for an employee. For this purpose, learning a foreign language could be essential for people who are looking for a job because in business, as Wong explains, the employers value the competitivity between applicants. Consequently, the employers will choose who have the more valuable skills and speaking more than one language could be an eye-catcher. However, as the author mention, learning a foreign language could not be vital

for a job. Wong does not emphasize on why learning a foreign language could not be important, but I think he said that because many people think learning a foreign language is only needed to padding your curriculum vitae. Besides, what about the competitiveness? I think many people do not feel the need to improve because they are in conformity as they are, so they will not seek to be more competitive in the job market knowing that they do not need. Wong supports his proposal about learning a foreign language by giving us compelling reasons of why it is critical for nowadays people, but he is biased only on positive things about learning a foreign language. My point of view is focused on both sides of learning a foreign language, so for example, according to R.L.G. many times the parents of a student of a foreign language ask themselves if really the investment is worth. (G., 2014) They have reason because today study a second or third language can have two sides: one in which the student finds the way of applying all these new knowledges, all the investment either time, money or all you needed to learn a foreign language. The other side is in which the now bilingual student cannot apply his skills. Thus, all the investment of time, money and so on only for padding his curriculum vitae. This is not bad, but is not what you were looking for when you decided to study a foreign language. However, though you cannot find the correct way of using your skills in the language, having these skills (being bilingual) make you more valuable for employers and that can help you to find a good work or get a promotion in your previous work. To sum up, when you have to make the decision of learning or not a foreign language you must have in mind all the possible options coming with the learning of the foreign language. Either by you need these skills to improve your professional life, communicate with your family, learn about new cultures or simply because you know about benefits on health that give you learning a foreign language. Be careful with your decision because

maybe learning a foreign language is not a waste of time and could give a lot of profits in business and personal life, but people should think about if their time is being well spent.

“The History of an Hour” by Kate Chopin Bryan P. Chachalo Yachay Tech University

You need to choose the correct option when you have sad news. Many people when they have a bad message; they take it in a bad way choosing a wrong way in where they will not live happies. However, if know how to take in a correct way news, it could help you to be happier than before. Chopin described Mrs. Mallard as descending the stairs “like a goddess of Victory” because she wanted to emphasize the feelings Mrs. Mallard felt. Thus, according to Chopin Mrs. Mallard “would live for herself”; this phrase is expressing the freedom she felt. Another critical event is when Mrs. Mallard accepts the monstrous joy, but now she knows it just was a brief moment of illumination (Chopin, 1894). “Free! Body and soul free! She kept whispering” (Chopin, 1894). In “The History of an Hour” by Kate Chopin many similes are showed like above, but what is the true meaning in real life? The author to show us the happiness of many confusing situations where the real ending of story is ironic. However, Chopin shows us a weird feeling because when Mrs. Mallard heard about her husband’s death she taken as never no one has taken before. She did not refuse the news, she only accepted that and went to her room. It makes us think about how she felt in her marriage, and perhaps if she wanted that. In real life, many women live similar situations maybe because their husbands are chauvinist as I supposed Brently Mallard was. Due to men who still living in the past who believe they have right to impose a private will upon a fellow. “She was drinking in a very elixir of life through that open window” (Chopin, 1984). When someone receives a bad or sad message; After all the suffering, calm and acceptance arrives. Chopin showed us an open Mrs. Mallard’s mind. When Mrs. Mallard heard the news of her husband’s death, she felt “pressed down by a physical exhaustion that haunted her body and seemed to reach into her soul” (Chopin, 1894). Although all this pressure she felt, a

stream of blood warmed and relaxed his affliction. I can say she found the light in the darkness when she accepted why she felt happy. I think Mrs. Mallard is an example of many women in the world that need to overpass a “bad message. They need to think in all the possible things they can do because of the bad message. They are free to choose an option where they could be happy, or be sad for their entire lives. In conclusion, the story of an hour is a strong way of representing many situations of a woman life. Getting bad or sad news is very shocking, but if you do not take a rash decision you could enjoy the good side. Thus, by accepting the freedom like Mrs. Mallard did or seeing the light in the darkness, you could be able to overpass your story of an hour.

The Kiss of the Death

The Kiss of the Death Bryan P. Chachalo, Francisco A. Bravo, Daniela A. Negrete Yachay Tech University

“And his young heart cannot help; in his veins the blood stops and freezes and encouragement lost faith embraces fall feeling the kiss of death” (Verdaguer, n.d.). In 1930 Llaudet family lost a young son who died all of a sudden, and because of that they wanted a sculpture which represents their feelings as a result of their son’s death. The Kiss of the Death is a gorgeous marble sculpture by Jaume Barba which represents tragedy and romance. The author of this awesome sculpture shows how people accept their destination and how the death welcomes them. The sculpture depicts the death, in the form of a winged skeleton, giving a kiss on the forehead of a handsome young man. The sculpture shows the death as a trip partner who guides people through a shadow valley directly to the feeling of renunciation of life. The death hugs and kisses the young man and it seems like the death was loving him. Ironically, that kiss will carry him to death´s world. The kiss of the death transmits a tragedy feeling for anyone who sees it. The tired hands that lie on the ground show a man defeated, a man who only said “Ok, take me” and does not want to proceed. The impotence of not being able to fight against the death who seems to be his faithful lover leaves the young man dreams and desires; he could not fulfill since the death was presented to him without anticipation. This unusual sculpture is intriguingly anachronistic in a pre-Raphaelite kind of way due to the perfection in the meticulous detailing of this sculpture. Details such as Death’s hollow ribs and tunic are rendered three-dimensionally that to allow see the cavities and spaces. All these details play a strong role in knowing what the author of this beautiful sculpture wants to convey to us. Thus, for example, the position of the hands transmits a feeling of resignation, or the position of the knees that are bent down transmitting a regret in the young man, and the most important sign that is the kiss that this winged figure gives in the forehead of the youth. All of these signs clearly have a meticulous work because in this way the author gives us an idea of what he wanted to plasm in this artwork. Due to the hard work that seems to have the kiss, this work of art is centered in the fact that

this figure (the death) seems to have a great desire to be at last with this young man. This man does not want to offer any resistance because it seems that something very important for him was snatched. So, the death with apparently great passion will go with his beloved young man to his world where the young man will finally get rid of what weighs him down. Ironically, love can be appreciated in this sculpture which at first sight only looks like a personification of tragedy as the death. The sculpture represents the death in the form of a skeleton with wings where the young man's body collapses before her. While the death who is the reason of the incident with an attitude of love gives him a kiss on the forehead and holds him so obstinately that we can appreciate the strength with she hugs the young man. A kiss represents love and it is purest and the most tender essence. The death is the causative of that young man's life will end, by kissing him and bringing him to his kingdom. How can there be love between death and youth? Maybe because the young man was willing to give himself to that love in all its fullness by accepting his fate. He was willing to give up his life to let his heart stop, and surrender to the death without thinking in consequences. Thus, regardless of the time nor the conditions their souls will be forever united in one alone. From another perspective, instead of a painful death, we can see it as a dream in which from another perspective, instead of a painful death, we can see it as a dream in which the young man falling in relaxed state and he is carried away to eternal dream in which death submerges him. A dream in which the two souls came together for eternity, eternity to which they entered together, by means of a kiss. This is how death clings to him, with a hug so strong, which ends up plunging into the dream of eternity. Additionally, the author of this awesome sculpture shows how people accept their destination and how the death welcomes them. Young man´s face expresses resignation because he does not try to fight against death in order to conserve his life. Falling man´s arms and kneeling position denote the voluntary surrender of man's soul. The author uses these

symbols for indicating that all people are conscious of their mortality and how fragile life is; it allows us to infer that all people accept the death as something normal. Also, the kiss at the man’s forehead is the welcome of eternal rest that death gives to whom died. Another interpretation of angel of death's kiss could be that it is as a promise of death to guide and accompany us when we walk through the world of the dead. The figure of “grim reaper” has different meanings for people according to their religion, or culture. However, all of them accept the dead as something inevitable and in some cases necessary. The skeleton could be an angel (by the wings) who carries the souls of deceased to a better world or to immortality. It is a new beginning because dying is only a transition between two world and realities. Also, it could symbolize just the ending of the way because the death transports our dear people outside this world where we are not going to see them never again. In conclusion, the are many ways in which an artist can express feelings, emotions or ideas. Barba, for example, uses a beautiful sculpture in which he represents feelings such as: tragedy and love in an unexpected way. Also, he manifests the resignation to life by accepting our mortality. As a group, we interpreted this sculpture in different ways such as: in an objective way focused on all details of the sculpture, and in a subjective way by looking for meanings for all excitements we saw. However, this interpretation is not the only one because there are many styles a person can perceive the idea of the author. Lastly, there may be many different thoughts because an interpretation is a subjective process that comes from within.

What if Everyone on Earth Spoke the Same Language? Bryan P. Chachalo Yachay Tech University

“Come let’s down and confuse their language, so they won’t be able to understand each other” (Cancio, n.d.). This quote is an extract from the Bible; it makes references that centuries ago a common language was spoken for all people in the world. And according to Cancio, many experts see similarities among the new and the oldest languages. In this fact, many people believe that we headed toward speaking a common language. Furthermore, many people believe that if everyone in the world speaks the same language, many conflicts would disappear, but it is unlikely and unattainable. Languages are more related to culture, family, and personal identity that you can believe. According to CLTA-GNY as cited by Cancio, some people say, “if everyone could communicate in the same language, would that lessen the distrust and hatred between nations" (n.d.). The prominence of one language is related with the fortunate economy, or the power of a country. If one country become an influential country, it could be an eye-catcher for people to communicate in this language. And because of that, people think that the difference between countries in the world will disappear. Any person in the world and his/her society will understand each other, and that will create warmth in the world.

“Would a common world language hasten the loss of language diversity?" (Cancio, n.d.). In order to answer this question there are the thoughts of many experts interviewed by Cancio. The responses of these linguistic experts ranged from "highly unlikely" to "not in a million of years." According to Cancio, English is the language of global communication. However, this global language did not affect the diversity of other languages spoken on earth. The reason why it does not affect other languages is because it can certainly be displaced at any time due to shifting global demographics and priorities. Nowadays, uninformed people think that if we talk the same language, wars as Afghan civil war will disappear and with the tune peace will be reached. Although this idea is

valid, it is not completely true. Many ferocious conflicts between countries or regions have happened even if they speak the same language. For example, there is the conflicts between North and South Vietnam. In this fact, peace is not a reason for having a common language. Furthermore, a common language will hasten the loss of diversity even if some experts say the opposite. Taking into account the historical perspective if that, 10,000 years ago, there were 12,000 distinct languages, and now there are only the half. We can affirm that a common language really affects the diversity of other languages.

How Beneficial is Learning Foreign Languages? Bryan P. Chachalo Yachay Tech University

As once Ludwig Wittgenstein said, “if we spoke a different language, we would perceive a somewhat different world” (n.d.). Of course, if people open their mind to a new language, they are going to enjoy all the benefits that it entails. Particularly, learning a foreign language is a controversial issue. However, if you resolve on learning a foreign language, it is going to be the best option for progressing and acquiring new valuable skills for you. Some of these skills include a rapid learning, and keeping mental health. And these points are some exceptional reasons why you must have on mind learning a foreign language. The main reason why people say that learning a foreign language is productive is because it could give you a lot of money in retribution. Actually, learning a foreign language is an established “option” for students, but is it really worth? And if that is the case, what is the actual payoff of knowing more than one language? According to Albert Saiz, learning a foreign language is a “desirable skill in the workforce, employers are willing to pay for” (2002). However, there are many people who affirm that learning a foreign language is not a useful skill for getting more money. As an example of this issue, there is an article called “Johnson: What is a foreign language worth?” in the electronic magazine “The economist”. In which, the author argues that learning a foreign language is really not worth. This conclusion was taken in a vague way because what he affirms is clearly taken without a rigorous analysis, and we can even see that flaw at the end of the article. The author in that part reflects about the annual percent of salary of an employee which is 1%, which will represent a lot of profits in some years of working. Also, learning a foreign language has a critical role in the economy of a country; it is not only related to economies of foreign language learners. In this fact, R. L. (2014) argues that countries that have open trade-driven economies are the richest in the world, but in these countries bilingualism is typical and necessary. There are many reasons why these countries are rich, but the willingness to learn about export markets, and their languages are the principal ones. To exemplify this fact, this

is a research study by James Foreman-Peck in where he estimated that the lack of foreignlanguage proficiency in Britain costs the economy $80 billion, or 3.5% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), each year (2014). So, if a country invests on its foreign language teaching, it would have dynamic effects. As examples of this, there would be more and better teachers and materials. It means more people will actually master a language rather than wasting several years by having a learning that has a limited application. And of course, countries and schools will create more than just producing little machines of GDP. In addition, there are also great non-economic benefits of learning a foreign language such as fast learning. As mentioned above, learning a foreign language is not only for the benefit of getting money. There are many reasons why learning a foreign language is worth, and one of these reasons is that it expands the rate at which you retrieve and acquire memories. According to Seifi, “if we could flawlessly memorize everything we see after looking at it only once, learning a foreign language would be a much faster and easier process (2016). Unfortunately, the process of memorizing is a complex process, and due that we still do not know how to make our memories perfect, learning a foreign language still continue being hard for students. But, there are some strategies that speed up the language-learning process. Spaced repetition is one of them, and it refers to the presentation of vocabulary items throughout long-terms intervals. It helps us remember extensive vocabulary into a short period of time. Another simple way to improve our retention of words is the contextdependent learning. And what it does is that when information is remembered, our brain also saves a lot of extra information such as the environment when the memory was formed. What it refers is for example, when you remember some word because you remember the book, or the page of the book that you had read. So, why learning a foreign language improves your learning? Now probably can appear the thought that these strategies can be applied even if you are not learning a foreign language. But, it should not be a surprise, that bilinguals show

to have a greater memory capacity than monolinguals. Due to that knowing two (or more) languages, expands our ability to remember things in general. And, as Seifi emphasizes, “this makes sense when you think about what it means to speak in a foreign tongue: not only do you have to use the foreign language, but you have to inhibit your native language” (2014). Therefore, whenever you speak a foreign language, you are preparing your brain to inhibit other distractions, which makes you more efficient in your everyday life. Thus, this suggests that learning another language does for your mind what exercise does for your body. Finally, learning foreign languages even reduces the probability of having neurodegenerative diseases. Indeed, studies have shown that bilinguals have a lower risk of developing mental illnesses such as Alzheimer's. Speaking more than one language helps people to experience the onset of Alzheimer’s and dementia later than monolingual adults. As in the article “Speaking a second language may delay dementia” the author argues that, “People who speak more than one language and who develop dementia tend to do so up to five years later than those who are monolingual” (2013). A study by Edinburgh University and Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences in Hyderabad, tried to demonstrate if being bilingual have any impact on the onset of dementia. The scientists of these institutes diagnosed with dementia diseases to almost 650 patients that were examined. All of these studies were independent of potential factors influencing the onset of dementia such as: gender, person’s education, occupation, and city or country where the patient lives. The results were that effectively people who spoke two or more languages experience later the onset of dementia diseases, and even their effects are extended to illiterate people. However, scientists affirm that they need even more studies in order to determine the mechanism why learning a foreign language delays the onset of dementia. But, as in the article is presented these scientists suggest that “bilingual switching between different sounds, words, concepts, grammatical structures and social norms constituted a form

of natural brain training, which was likely to be more effective than any artificial brain training program (2013). Therefore, learning a foreign language will help to keep the mental health. Even with all these benefits, people still believe that learning a foreign language is unproductive and unnecessary because it requires a lot of time, and much unpaid investment. Thus, bearing in mind the non-retributed investment and all debts get by studying a foreign language, it is easy to accept that learning a foreign language is not a good option for progressing. In this way, when you study a foreign language, you are able to ask yourself, where is the return of my investment? In order to answer this question, we have that the profit bonus for studying a foreign language is for an American, for example, only 2%. Thus, if you make $ 30,000 per year, this translates into just $ 600 of return. R. L. argues that if you want to apply your new skill on language a non-native learner “will have a hard time competing with a fluent native bilingual for a job requiring both languages (2014). Lastly, one hour learning a foreign language is an hour spent not learning something else, but it is clear that everything has a cost. However, if you plan on how this new skill is going to be applied, it will be productive for you. Nowadays in this globalized world getting a new language is not useless. Also, all businesses in the world need communication, but not all countries speak the same language. In this fact, learning a foreign language go hand in hand with progressing. Further, learning a foreign language makes you smarter by improving your cognitive ability and it can even help delay the onset of dementia and other symptoms of Alzheimer's disease. However, taking into account the cons that R. L. argues, what you should do is finding information about the language you want to study. Because the different retributions of learning a foreign language are commonly setup by the economy of the country that speaks this language. Therefore, learning a foreign language is important for progressing and also keeping health, but if you

decide not to acquire this skill maybe because learning a foreign language can be expensive, or time consuming, you will never enjoy its benefits. To sum up, learning a foreign language can be a complex process, but it is like a training for the brain. Where people who are studying, non-native languages will develop many skills. Thus, mastering new languages provides profitable benefits. Also, in this learning process, skills such as fast learning, or the improvement of memorizing will be developed. And, even this process will help to feel the onset of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer much later in life. Now, if although the money got by learning a foreign language is still not a reason for learning new languages, think about mind’s health which, I think, everyone wants.
