December 8, 2016

Dear Portfolio Reader,

My name is Marlon Gurumendi. Thank you for reading my English Digital Portfolio, which is a collection of my works of the level six English course. Writing about my experience in learning English leads me to think of many admirable teachers and fun classmates. Reflecting is important because it helps me to think about how much I have learned since I came to Yachay Tech. My portfolio shows the learning I have had during my years as an English student at the high school. It consists of four essays, a reflection, and a research paper. As an English language user, I consider that this language is more specific than Spanish because when I usually write in Spanish in a piece of paper, it is a larger text than writing in English. I belong to the first generation at Yachay Tech. When I arrived at this college, I was going to take the leveling course. I found out that I would see three hours of English per day. It was too much, but I really wanted to learn how to speak and how to write in the English language. I started on level two, and my first English teacher was Guadalupe Magaña in Yachay Tech. She was an amazing teacher because she did everything she could to make me learn. I learned to write paragraphs in English, but I was not so good because before I had not written the first one. Although it is true that I am still not a good writer every day, I go a little further. As a student, I really feel I have learned so much since the first day of classes until now. When I started level six this semester, to know that I was assigned to one of the most demanding teachers, it was very important to dedicate myself a lot this semester. My teacher's name is Ercilia. Being responsible and punctual are important aspects for her. For example, if you do not present homework, there are no excuses as to why you did not do it. Therefore, the impact she caused on me throughout the semester is amazing because now I control my time to complete my activities. My ability to think in English has improved thanks to Ercilia because she ordered me to be specific, so I could answer questions of all kind. My growth can be reflected from my first essay to the last one. My first essay was the response essay. It was not so good, but I want to emphasize that writing about whether college education is the solution to get a good job, it made me broaden the perspective of perceiving the world. In a fragment of my response essay I expressed some realities as, "People without college degrees cannot work in high positions", and “attending college does not guarantee you are going to have a decent job where you will earn a lot of money”. I selected this topic because I wanted to raise awareness to readers to think why we have to attend college. My second essay was the literary analysis essay. For writing this essay, I had to read a story called The Tell-Tale Heart. It was a unique experience to write an essay about a story in which I had to exaggerate to the reader for giving emotion. For example, “he explodes and relates the crime”. My third essay was the interpretation essay which was in group. We had to

choose a painting, and talk about it. My painting was an artistic expression of GuayasamĂn. He tried to stop injustice as shown in my essay "Guayasamin reflected in his painting the fear that people had felt by social discrimination.â€? After we had to present the painting and explain our thoughts about the painting. For me, the most important thing at the time of presentation in English is knowing how to answer the questions correctly because it implies our critical thinking. My last essay was the argumentative essay about how to win the war on drugs. This essay demonstrates the progress I have had in my writing since my vocabulary has increased as we can see in a part of my text “Who guarantees that drug traffickers want to become legal." In addition, before writing the essay, we had a debate about drugs. The class was divided into two groups: one in favor and other against. It was interesting to hear the arguments of each one because I was able to learn to counteract the opposing arguments of mine. So, working in groups helped to have clearer ideas to counteract. I think that learning English would be easy if we think in English not in Spanish. Preparing the research paper was the hardest part of the semester for the percentage that represents in the final grade, and the time that is dedicated. My research paper is Ethics about Plagiarism in College Students. I chose this topic because I think we should use our own resources and not depend on anyone else. This research paper shows that I have learned my writing compared to my first essay. If you read both, you will see that I have many spelling mistakes in the first essay and in the research paper I have fewer mistakes. Finally, I want to thank all the teachers who have taught me English. Thanks to them I can understand better the language. However, my learning does not end there as I will continue learning because scientists communicate in this language. I hope you like my portfolio, and I hope it will serve you for your future. As a user of this language, I am proud of the progress I have made because it has been hard to learn how to write and speak. Thank you again for reading my portfolio.

Sincerely,

Marlon Gurumendi

Is College Education the Solution to Get a Good Job? Marlon Patricio Gurumendi Sรกnchez Yachay University of Experimental Technology and Research

Is College Education the Solution to Get a Good Job? "Education isn't what you learn, it's what you do with what you learn." Anonymous. When I was in high school, I saw people with college degrees without job. Despite that circumstance, high school sells us a path with an output to success, which is college. In the United States, most of college graduates find no job in their profession (Crotty, 2012). Most of educators say that having a college degree guarantees personal stability and the quality of life. Nevertheless, in some cases it is false because students must know that success depends on each one, studying on your own to learn about a specific topic, and college does not guarantee to have a decent job. According to George Leef (2013), who is Director of Research at the John W. Pope Center for Higher Education Policy, “…success always depended on personal performance rather than educational pedigree.” I agree with Leef’s claim that going to college is not an investment because having a college degree does not guarantee that you know what you studied, and if you have studied college, having a college degrees does not guarantee that you work on that. People need to open their eyes and not consume the idea that college is the only way to achieve a good job. Today, companies are looking for people with college degrees, but why? Because these people are prepared in specific fields and can function in any required position. However, they are not located on their same fields, companies place them in anywhere. So why study over 4 years in college? If we ourselves can generate employment for us, in other words, we can be our own bosses. That is the case of two people that they decided to leave college to earn a lot of money. On the one hand, Bill Gates who was the founder of Microsoft, and on the other hand, Steve Jobs who was the founder of Apple. They did not finish college and nobody emphasizes on these great examples.

Most of people think that college is a good investment yet and just repeat what they want to believe or what others say. As stated by Till Groß (2014), who is coach, speaker and entrepreneur, “we must be willing to work for free to gain practical experience and putting much effort to finalize with a career of your interest.” We do not need college to learn about a specific topic, and one great solution is to take education in our own hands (Groß, 2014). For example, if students want to be fast people to solve math exercises, they should practice a lot on their own to achieve it. Getting a college degree implies serious work and therefore better salaries (Leef, 2013). My experience affirms that students apply for college because people told them that to do it, they will increase their value. However, that does not always happen, since some people with college degrees sometimes do not get a work whereby college would not have been good investment. Although if the goal is to earn money, and a sports business man offers someone a big salary for being a soccer player. That person will not need to study in college because instead of wasting four years in college, that guy could prefer to earn money that maybe it will not earn in your entire life. Businesses require professionals with college degrees because it is a requirement to work and ascend of position in a business. People without college degrees cannot work in high positions because they do not arrive there by performance in factory, but by a college degree which says someone is prepared and knows how to do it. Although there are people who have not studied college and have what it requires to be in a good position in any company. We have to delete the bad idea that having college degree is the number one goal in life, since learning it only depends on us. Something I have learned is that not everyone has leadership and studying on college does not guarantee having leadership. I believe that whether a person does credits to be in a

high position in a factory where it is needed a college degree, he or she must be promoted. Even Yachay professors have said that you never know in what place you would go to work. In addition, attending college does not guarantee you are going to have a decent job where you will earn a lot of money. In conclusion, people must know that there are people who generated a lot of money and did not need a college degree to get a good job. If someone wants to learn about a specific topic, anyone can do it on their own and will not need a college to do it. People must be willing to work for free to gain practical experience. In addition, college is sometimes not an investment because having a college degree does not mean having a good job.

Marlon Gurumendi October 13, 2016 “The story of an hour” Life is full of adventure just open your mind. Kate Chopin wrote a short story called “The Story of An Hour” in which mentions that Mr Mallard had heart problem; Mallard’s wife, Louise, received the news that her husband was dead; Louise’s sister, Josephine, was imploring for her admission because she thought that Louise felt very sad because she closed the door. I consider that the author was ironic because in the beginning she mentions the heart trouble, and it after generates a doubt about what will happen with her, and then the mystery is resolved. Josephine told Louise about her husband’s death. Louise was paralyzed with the new, and she sat with a calm face without being able to breathe. After, she was walking alone towards her room, and she did not want anyone follow her. Louise was facing the open window with gaze fixed in blue sky. A vacant stare fills of terror. She wondered what love could mean, and at the same time responded that she was free of body and soul. While Josephine was trying to enter the room, Louise was happy for what was happening. Josephine was begging, and shouting for her to open the door. Louise felt the peace of being alone with the window open. Then, Josephine went out to see what happened outside. Louise quickly opened the door to Josephine after taking a deep breath to make life long. Josephine hugged her sister, and together they went downstairs. Then, Louise’s husband entered and he only saw the face of Louise. A fact of luck happened because he had been away from the accident. Josephine saw her and cried because she seemed dead. The doctors said that Louise had died of heart disease by the surprise of seeing her husband alive.

In conclusion, the author was ironic because he mentioned two deaths, one at the beginning, the husband’s death, and the other one in the last part, Louise’s death. Only one death occurred, and this fact was given because Louise had felt joy that her husband had died, but when she sees him alive, she was so surprised that her heart could not resist, and died of a heart attack.

Interpretation Essay: Ternura (Tenderness) such as an Artistic Expression of 20th Century in Ecuador Gurumendi Marlon, Luna Santiago, RiofrĂo AndrĂŠs Yachay University of Experimental Technology and Research

Interpretation Essay: Ternura (Tenderness) Artistic Expression of 20th Century in Ecuador “I dream my painting and I paint my dream.” - Vincent Van Gogh Ecuadorian identity is characteristic for a high cultural richness. Over time Ecuador has lived different times in the past Ecuadorian society suffered in highest levels poverty, discrimination and illiterate. One important aspect that it helped them to forgot it is the art in the way to express the discontent of all the population. A person who is a figure against the discrimination to natives is Oswaldo Guayasamín. He is a successful artist and characterized for his cubist style. He was born in Quito-Ecuador, his family was poor, and he was the eldest of ten siblings. In general, his pieces of art are known to develop topics such as discrimination, poverty, love and anger. Tenderness is one of the most relevant work of Guayasamin it was painted in 1989 and is an oil painting. Tenderness is an artistic expression of 20th century in Ecuador because it represents discrimination to natives, poverty extreme and mother’s love toward her sons. In this way, “Ternura” could be considered such as a way to express feelings of the real life of Ecuadorian mothers because in the painting, it is possible view feelings such as love, comprehension and tenderness. Ternura painting is part of work of art named Mientras Viva Siempre te Recordaré (While I Live I Will Always Remember You) and allows the mother love. Oswaldo Guayasamín’s work is divided in three parts each of one is characterized such as three different periods of Guayasmín’s life. The first one is named “Huacayañan”, it is a quechua word that means El Camino del Llanto (The way of Tears) all of this pieces of art represent the suffering of indigenous society and express bitter feelings. The second one is angry period constituted by 100 pieces of art, Guayasamín tried to express the feelings that natives suffered at the moment to fight against discrimination and racism. The third one is period of Tenderness that consist in

a praise of all Ecuadorian mothers, the pieces of art show feelings such as love, comprehension, tenderness and happiness. According to María Otero in her thesis to obtain her Master of Arts Art History, she said “the paintings in this series were homage to Oswaldo Guayasamín mother and to all the mothers of the word” because he felt a lot of respect for the woman that was discriminated in this period. In the painting, it is possible observe the feelings of mother because her eyes expresses love, tenderness, comprehension. On the other hand, the child’s eyes show ingenuousness while her mother embraces him. Furthermore, it is possible observe how the child is in the center of her mother allowing us to remember the pregnancy moment and how in its moment the mothers feel love for her children despite in the picture she is undernourished. Guayasamin fought to discrimination for being indigenous roots, and against what his father imposed on him not to paint (Otero, 2011). He showed the problems that were happening in Ecuador in the XX century such as the abuse and suffering, which caused on him a trauma. Guayasamin reflected on his painting the fear that they had felt by social discrimination. It explains how the mother with the head leaning protects her child firmly with her arms, and the child is scared and transmits a concern for what will happen. In the past indigenous people suffered a lot of discrimination and Guayasamín tried to fight it, today the racism and discrimination have been reduced thanks people such as Oswaldo. However, differences continue being high in this indigenous population but artistic expression is an opportunity to protest against injustice. In the 20th century in Ecuador, if people were indigenous race, they were economically disadvantaged, and did not have much to eat and suffered from malnutrition (Otero, 2011). In the painting, the ribs of the two people are notorious because they have bad feeding, they were poor, and they ate less food. In addition, it can be noticed a sample of what the most of

indigenous people passed: malnutrition, and poverty. Guayasamín painted the physical aspects of an unjust world filled of poverty and suffering induced by the world economic system (Otero, 2011). Tenderness express how the malnutrition is presenting on indigenous society, but even so mother’s love is unwavering this is the expression of feelings of all the ecuadorian mothers. In conclusion, the author painted his mother feelings in his work of art because he had a strong relationship with his mother and he observed the indigenous discrimination that produced poverty in the year 1989 when he painted his work of art named Ternura. For this reason, Oswaldo Guayamín in his painting like allow the indigenous suffering to all over the world in order to stop the discrimination and give them a greater opportunity in their studies or works with the purpose to does not have more poverty in the ingenious families. In this way, author’s painting is a way to protest the indigenous discrimination in order to be grateful with the mothers because their care their children in spite of all problems.

Marlon Gurumendi December 1, 2016 How to win the war on drugs Do we have to legalize drugs? For many years, people have been against drugs because drug consumption could increase in them. Drug dependent people suffer more frequent injuries and deaths due to accidents caused by the effect of drugs since people make bad decisions, and lose control. Dan Baum in his article How to win the war on drugs proposed legalize it all; but I disagree with him because to legalize drugs could maximize drug consumption, could increase heart disease, and could not eliminate the criminal market. Prolonged use of any drug makes people want to consume more and more drugs (NIDA, 2016). People who want to legalize drugs affirm that people would be free to choose their path. The big problem with legalizing drugs is that people do not have money to buy drugs, they could resort to hurt because they do not have money to get drugs. In Portugal, according to Baum, “some crimes strongly associated with drug use increased after decriminalization” (2016). Some people say that countries can collect taxes legalizing drugs. According to Baum (2016), “In the case of drugs, the profits could go toward treating addicts.” But, what happen if most of people are consuming drugs? The risks by drugs can be enormous. For example, marijuana kills brain cells (Levy, 2009). But, there are some drugs that can produce deaths. For example, cocaine is associated with heart-related problems such as hypertension, or narrowing of the arteries. If people want to legalize drugs, they have to be prepared because they will have to examine, license, and standardize drugs (Baum, 2016). Legalizing drugs means that drug traffickers want to become legal? Are they going want to pay taxes? People only think about consumers, but they are forgetting traffickers. Traffickers

want to control their place; they are leaders. Thinking that by finding a solution, people can cause a disaster because many countries do not have the same education that other countries. Legalizing drug is not equal to remove the black market because each country has its own laws. In conclusion, if people try to eliminate the problems caused by drugs, the drugs legalization is not answer because people could consume a drug overdose, and could become addicted. Also, some drugs can cause their death; and by eliminating the black market, you could have people addicted to drugs.

Ethics about Plagiarism in College Students Marlon Gurumendi Yachay University of Experimental Technology and Research

Abstract This paper is related to ethics about plagiarism in college students. Today, the growth of plagiarism is killing creativity in college students because they only copy sentences from fragments without quoting sources. Students should understand that if they base on other work to do theirs, they must give credit to the original author. Teachers could teach ethics to students as soon as they enter college. Ethics is important because it does that students value the effort of the original author. Capable students get lost because they are with people who plagiarize and are not punished, which leads to the other students to plagiarize. There are more reasons why students plagiarize such as maintaining the scholarship, being in extra activities, etc. However, plagiarism could be reduced, if college works as a group. Students should be willing to avoid plagiarism, teachers should teach how to avoid falling into plagiarism, and administrators should give the tools to detect plagiarism in time. Keywords: college, ethics, plagiarism, students, teachers

Ethics about Plagiarism in College Students “In the past, ideas came from the brain. Now, they come from google.” Anonymous

College students are aware that they copy and paste works extracted from websites. Plagiarism is to use another person's ideas or work, and pretend that it is yours. Teachers and administrators of each university are trying to stop plagiarism that has become very common among college students who do not know that to copy the idea of others without giving credits to the author is not being original. According to Caveon Test Security (N.D.), which is dedicated to provide services to detect, correct, and prevent test fraud, “In a sample of 1,800 students at nine state universities, 52% had copied a few sentences from a website w/o citing the source”. Plagiarism is unacceptable because it does not allow people expand their creativity since it is just like refusing to think for themselves. College students have to know that the ideas taken from different websites are not theirs, and that they should create their own works; teachers must detect plagiarism to time to correct it; finally, administrators should provide devices to detect plagiarism, and to make talks about plagiarism as soon as the students enter at college, and not when they are finishing college career. Some college students do not know what it is plagiarism, others know what it is plagiarism, but when they forget homework, they copy tasks to be able to present them. College students should be conscious that they can create everything that they imagine, and that does not need to copy ideas of others but to take it like guides (Sutherland-Smith & Saltmarsh, 2010). Each student knows the policy of their college about plagiarism, and understands that they can be expelled from college by plagiarizing. For that reason, students must be able to explain their assignments (Sutherland-Smith & Saltmarsh, 2010). Nevertheless, there is an important factor related to academic dishonesty that students may adopt such as their perception of plagiarism. If college students observe that their classmates are plagiarizing, they could fall into the same

(Scanlon & Neumann, 2002). According to Scanlon & Neumann (2002), who were professors of Communication at Rochester Institute of Technology, “…many students do go online to cut and paste text for use in their assignments.” However, technology moves along in education field, and students need the Internet to make their search. The ethics of students is important since it leads to have a perception about what to do. For example, in a classroom, when teachers ask if someone has plagiarized, students usually says no, however, they argue that they have seen how their classmates plagiarize. This is something contradictory that all of them respond in the same way, and no one confirms that they plagiarize. Plagiarism is seen as something normal between them, who rarely report it, but teachers have an opposite perception (Scanlon & Neumann, 2002). Student perceptions may be incorrect, as they say it is wrong to cheat, and then they plagiarize. Keeping a scholarship is a reason for students can fall into plagiarism. Students say teachers do not teach clearly, and they do not encourage a compromise about academic honesty among students. In addition, students have seen slides of teachers without quoting to anyone. Is this provision only for students? Students should learn what it is common knowledge. College teachers know their students and what the errors of each one of them are. Teachers can detect when students plagiarize and when they may need to plagiarize. It is more likely that a student who has low grades may plagiarize. Teachers can teach ethically the importance of being originals in their works, and how to avoid falling into plagiarism (Baer, 2007). Overcoming plagiarism means to reduce academic dishonesty. Learning, teaching, and penalizing are very important for college community because the increase in plagiarism should be reduced. Teachers should meet with their student to talk about what constitutes plagiarism and what does not. According to Baer (2007), who was an associate professor and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Librarian at Wichita State University, “There is a strong belief that one of the main causes of plagiarism is a lack of understanding.” Training students

about plagiarism, it will have a positive result in their behavior in college. The ethical use of the internet is important for students can learn to avoid plagiarism. If students think they can be originals, they could avoid plagiarism. The problem would be that when students see their bad grades, they fall into desperate acts and resort to copy random ideas from websites (Maramark & Maline, 1993). Teachers should know how to combat plagiarism, and why students plagiarize. They often assume that students learned to avoid plagiarism in high schools. Students do not know how to avoid plagiarism and think that if they paraphrase, they are already relieved of plagiarism (Baer, 2007). If the works of others are as guides for students, they have to give credit to the original author in the same way. The first day of class in their college should have a segment on the ethical use of information. Students have to learn about what is common knowledge, and teachers must place in syllabus what would happen if students copy a work from website. A solution can be that when students investigate a specific topic, they can note the bibliographies that they want to use. Teachers could be confused whether the student plagued or received help from another student. Detecting plagiarism would be easier if teachers had a plagiarism detection program. There are many technological programs that help to detect similarities in the works, and it can serve to help students to be original. Anti-plagiarism programs can be used to identify identical sentences in any document (Barrett & Malcolm, 2006). College administrators lack commitment to fight against plagiarism, and do not provide anti-plagiarism programs to teachers. This program may be important for students can forget to plagiarize because teachers could teach students to not fall into plagiarism. Having academic ethics could reduce plagiarism. However, the problem of having an anti-plagiarism tool is that it will focus on detecting plagiarism instead of teaching how to avoid it (Pino & Smith, 2003). Students could look for ways to avoid their responsibility by changing few words and deleting text they do not

need from original texts. Teachers should encourage to be originals in their class. They should be examples for students in all moment. If teachers promote academic ethics since students enter college, they will be able to see how plagiarism is reduced. Having a program to detect plagiarism could give security to students. If their peers plagiarize their work on the website, the program will detect it, and teachers will be able to punish this situation (Baer, 2007). Administrators must understand that if they are not given the attention they deserve, students who do not plagiarize could decide to plagiarize. With the program, students could avoid plagiarism due to fear of being discovered, and teachers can identify students who need help. Once teachers detect the problem, they must teach why students should quote all sources that students use. On the other hand, teachers could forget to use these anti-plagiarism programs, or students could be very busy and recur to commit acts of dishonesty (Pino & Smith, 2003). According to Pino & Smith (2003), who were professors in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Georgia Southern University, “participating in student clubs or groups in general increases one's probability of engaging in academic dishonesty. The hours dedicated to other activities make students waste time, so students in order to complete their assignment, they plagiarize their works. In conclusion, college students, teachers, and administrators must join to eliminate plagiarism which has become common among students. There are many factors that lead to plagiarism such as despair, scholarship, being in sports activities, or simply laziness, but if students are willing to improve, teachers to correct, and administrators to get the program so that teachers can detect plagiarism, college could reduce plagiarism and having highperformance professionals with a lot of creativity. To make a promise where everyone collaborates: teachers should teach about plagiarism, students learn to not commit it, and administrators give the necessary resources to be able to detect it. Ethics is important since students enter college because they learn from teachers, and they also learn from other students.

For that reason, being an example is very important. Students have to demand that their teachers talk about academic ethics, and its benefits. Teachers have to teach why students must be authentic, and in case of plagiarism they should talk to their students to communicate what is happening. There are programs that allow teachers to detect plagiarism effectively. These programs should be given by administrators of each college. College community must be united to eliminate plagiarism.
