Dear Portfolio Reader:
My name is Emil Vega. I am thankful that you are reading my English Language Portfolio. It is a proof of my progress as English language learner because it has three essays which I designed and developed throughout this semester. Furthermore, it has a research essay which was the most important essay in this semester. This collection of my work demonstrates how much my abilities and skills have grown to write good essays. Therefore, I am sure that you are going to enjoy my portfolio because I chose interesting topics for my essays. I am glad to finish this Academic English Course and I am ready to continue learning by myself. At the beginning of this semester I had many problems with the verb tense. In my response essay to “The Ethical Dilemma of Self-Driving Cars” I had a bad use of verb tense. For example, I wrote “This ethical dilemma can be handle through a research of all the possible cases” but now I know that I had to have written “This ethical dilemma can be handled through research of all the possible cases”. Currently, when I have to write I put a lot of attention on conjugations of verbs and at the end I make a review of my grammar. This response essay was my worst work of this semester. I had many corrections of grammar and spelling. However, the following essays were much better.
My development of speaking has been improved in this semester. In my first conversation with my professor, he said to me that I am one of the best speakers in the class, but I have problems with my accent and sometimes I have problems choosing the correct word usage. For example, in the conversation about “The Ethical Dilemma of Self-Driving Cars” I was using “put” when I should have said “use”. Another challenge for me was my pronunciation of the word “just”. When I used this word my professor always kept thinking about what I was trying to say and he said me that I was pronouncing the word “just” wrong. One good advice that my professor gave me was “Make your own recordings of yourself imitating famous actors. Compare your pronunciation with these actors. Before long, your accent will begin to reduce”. This advice was so useful because I am practicing that and I feel that my pronunciation is better than the beginning of this semester. The interpretation essay which was made in group was difficult for me. I could not work well in a group because I did not know what my partners are thinking nor the way that they write. However, this work helped me to understand my partners and helped to create an understanding of teamwork within me. Therefore, I learned how I should work in a group. I have to pay attention to what my partners are saying and try to reach an agreement between all of us. Overall, I have grown so much in all English levels. I got a lot of knowledge about writing, speaking and grammar. I want to continue learning and improving my abilities and skills. There are still problems with the verb tense. Therefore, I am going to read a lot because this is a good way to improve my writing. Furthermore, I have to continue practicing my speaking. For this reason, I will talk more with english speakers and practice with my partners in my regular classes at Yachay.
Thank you for reading my portfolio again. I hope that you really enjoy it. You will agree with me when I said that I grow a lot. I am ready to move out of English Language Program at Yachay and I am ready to continue my career at Yachay with a good use of this language.
Gratefully,
Emil Vega
RESPONSE ESSAY
Response to “The Ethical Dilemma of Self-Driving Cars by Patrick Lin” Emil Vega Yachay Tech
Response to “The Ethical Dilemma of Self-Driving Cars by Patrick Lin” Imagine that you are driving to an important meeting and you are late and tired, actually you need to rest, then you turn on the self-driving of your car to not lose time and rest. In the road an accident soon will happen. Are you really safe? In the Youtube video, “The Ethical Dilemma of Self-Driving Cars”, Patrick Lin shows the most interesting cases of the murky ethics of self-driving cars which are an invitation to think about who is really guilty in an accident and other interesting dilemmas about this technological advance. Lin is right to propound these cases, but I believe that it is necessary to have more details about how these ethical problems should be handled for the wellness of everybody. The video about ethical problems of self-driving cars has many good points that people have to analyze. The video was focused on who is responsible to make a predecision about what the self-driving car should do in an accident. What lives are more important to protect? Also this video gives some points in favor to this technological advance. Patrick Lin asks what is the limit of this technology, that is to say, this selfdriving car can make justice in the street choosing some to die (Ted ed, 2015). The video shows that in the future you will choose what kind of car do you want. Will a potential consumer want a car to protect his own life or will he prefer to protect his fellow citizens?. What will happen if this car starts to analyze you and your particular life? Who is responsible to make these policies of safety for this car?. All these things need to be handled properly to start down the road of ethics in the self-driving cars. Self-driving cars provide several benefits to improve the life of people. The right and smart design for self-driving cars may decrease accident rates. This technical advance can be a step more in the progress of programming. The driver can feel safer in a self-driving car. As Lin (Ted ed, 2015) admits in his video, some benefits of this car
are: “ease road congestion, decrease harmful emissions, and minimize unproductive and stressful driving time”. All these benefits make us think about the usefulness of a selfdriving car, but Lin does not say how it will be controlled. The accidents probably will happen, then there exists the necessity of creating the appropriate policies for selfdriving cars. People should be prepared for the new age of autonomous cars. Humans can react to any accident in different ways but always is a reaction at that moment. However, in another article called “The Ethics of Autonomous Cars” by Patrick Lin (2013) asks “Sometimes good judgment can compel us to act illegally. Should a self-driving vehicle get to make that same decision?”. Lin makes an interesting question because this car was programmed to take a specific decision for each situation. That is to say, the programmer must make these decisions. Then, these decisions are not a reaction at the moment as Lin says in his video. Therefore, as Lin (Ted ed, 2015) argues, this kind of reaction can be called a “premeditated death”. However, Lin could give more examples about what kind of decision can be a premeditated death. This ethical dilemma can be handled through research of all the possible cases. This research must be very accurate for the protection of life. An ethical problem is who is properly trained to choose who deserves to live or not. Programmers must to be very focused in the analyze all the cases, but who is responsible to determine the right decision?. Lin (Ted ed, 2015) asks if those responsible for these decisions are the “programmers, companies or the government”, but he never said what role have to do the driver or the rest of people. A possible solution to this question is create a application which be possible make some configurations in order to the buyers can choose their priorities. These configurations may be directed in the most important decision for some accident. However, it will probably be necessary to create or modify the traffic laws according to the use of self-
driving cars. This is important because the choice of the buyers can be treated like a homicide. Therefore, the buyers should be prepared to buy a kind of car like it, because these cars are machines that can not think, they just do what they are programmed to do. An application that allows the driver to choose what lives are more important to protect, as Lin (Ted ed, 2015) says in his video, creates a new question which Lin did not give enough details on: Do you prefer to protect your life at all costs or you prefer to protect all lives as possible? The most people probably think that is not a right answer because everybody has different priorities. However, if someone chooses himself, people will think that is an egoistic person. In contrast, if someone chooses other lives instead yourself, people will think you do not have self-love. In another case, this decision can be considered suicide. Consequently, the answer for this question need to consider many factors that can be analyzed with the possible buyers. In other words, it needs to create training courses to open the mind of the drivers to all options that they have. This preparation can make easier the choice of a kind of self-driving car. The video does not have enough details of how to handle these ethical problems. Lin (Ted ed, 2015) in his video makes these two questions: “What happen if the cars start analyzing and factoring the passengers in the cars and the particulars of their lives?, Could it be the case that a random decision still better than a predetermined one design to minimize harm?. These questions are just a invitation to think about what is ethical, but they do not have a goal to give a possible management about the problem. The video would have been more entertaining if Lin had given some advice to handle these ethical problems. However, the video has several good points like: good examples, excellent arguments, simple images that showed the essential things. Consequently, the video gives a clear grasp of ethics in the construction of self-driving cars, despite the missing details of how to control the ethical problems.
To sum up, Patrick Lin in his video showed us many point of ethics that should be considered to build a self-driving car. Remembering the scenario of the beginning, the safety in your self-driving cars depends of how many ethical points are taken in account to develop this technological advance. In the video some details about the management of these ethical problems were missing. However, everybody that see this video can understand the importance to analyze these ethical dilemmas, but nobody will know where to start. At least, this video is an invitation to think about if the technological advances are really agree with the ethical principles of our society. The future of the technological advances could make our lives easier but we need to pay a price which may be closely related to murky ethics.

INTERPRETATION ESSAY
Interpretation of “The Persistence of Memory” by Salvador Dali Estefanía Benavides - Winter Morejón - Shary Mosquera - Emil Vega Yachay Tech
Interpretation of “The Persistence of Memory” by Salvador Dali Vincent Van Gogh once said “Paintings have a life of their own that derives from the painter’s soul”. Painting is the art of the graphic representation using pigments and other substances. Painters design these works of art to convey their view about something or simply to express their deepest feelings. One of the most important painters around the world was Salvador Dalí. He was born on May 11, 1904 in Figueres, Catalonia, Spain. Dalí was among the most versatile artist of the twentieth century. He is remembered for his eccentric personality and his surrealistic technique. Salvador Dalí frequently described his paintings as “hand painted dream photographs¨. The Persistence of Memory, one of his most recognizable works, was based in time like theme, from the melting clocks to the decay implied by the swarming ants. Therefore, general interpretation is that the painting which portrays many melting clocks is a rejection of time as a firm and fatalist influence. The history behind the quality of Dalí’s paintings was born with the Surrealism in 1924. Surrealism is an artistic movement that emphasizes the unconscious. Surrealistic painters focus on a presentation of very deep reality created by the unconscious mind. For this reason, dreams are the main source of inspiration for this movement. Salvador Dalí joined to the Surrealism in 1929. He was one of the most well-known painters of this movement. In the article “15 Things You Didn't Know About The Persistence Of Memory" there are many interesting facts about Dali and his painting. An interesting factor is that he had a great influence of the landscapes of his native Catalonia. In "The Persistence of Memory", the shadow of Mount Pani, where his family had a summer house, drapes the foreground. Another interesting fact of this painting is that some critics believe that the melting clocks in the piece have a relationship with Albert Einstein's theory of relativity. Dawn Ades said in her critique,
“the soft watches are an unconscious symbol of the relativity of space and time", but Dali said that his painting has not a relationship with this fact (Puchko, 2015). The artistic painting “The Persistence of Memory” has a very interesting color combination and many unreal things. The medium of this painting is oil in canvas. The measures are 9 1/2 x 13 inches, or 24.1 x 33 cm and it is on display at the Museum of Modern Art in New York (MoMA, 2016). The principal objects are melting clocks which are hanging on three different things. The first one is on the edge of a table. Also, there is another clock on the table which has a lot of ants gathered in its center. The second thing is a dry branch where the clock looks like clothe on the clothesline. This branch grows from the table. The last one is like a bed sheet covering a fallen tree trunk with protruding branches, that gives the appearance of a closed eye. In the bottom of the painting there is a landscape. On the top there is a beautiful sunset that is a mixture between blue and orange. The second part is a very calm sea without waves that join with the sky. On the right, there is an orange and very dry crag. On the left, there is a big pool over the sand. The rest of the landscape is a desert. The color of the sand becomes darker until it reaches the inferior part of the painting. This change in color tone produces the idea that an object is casting shadow into the landscape. Note the big pool and the sea in a dessert which support the idea that this painting is unreal. Likewise, the melting clocks and the branch grow from a table in a crag over the sand. Those things has no sense in the same painting. Furthermore, the Museum of Modern Art in New York has a description of the painting which says that “Salvador Dalí frequently described his paintings as hand painted dream photographs” (MoMA, 2016). That description is very accurate because these things can only happen in dreams. This painting draws the attention of spectators who have felt passionate at first sight, and even more when they note the surrealism that it has. Furthermore, the
painting seems excellent because the contrast between strong and weak colors is magnificent. The most striking things are the three melting clocks like a symbol of the current time. In the article “The Persistence of Memory”, Sean Li (2010) says, “I see the painting as a play on time itself, the philosophical entity behind time, rather than its outer appearance.” Taking into account what Li said, we can say that the melted clocks represent the desire to stop the time and break schedules. Perhaps, the difference between these clocks is that one shows a past already worn, other shows the present which is melting and the last one shows the future which is coming. We think that Dalí tried to photograph the dreams. His goal was to bring to light the strange visions that occur in his subconscious, and manifest each detail of his dreams. It is possible that the obsession with the passing of time and the space were the most used arguments by Dalí in this painting. In the same way, the sequence of melting clocks in a disjointed landscape is an depiction of a dream that Dali had experienced. “The Persistence of Memory” shows extremely detailed areas, as well as the use of light and perspective that gives us the three-dimensional and real aspect of the scene. One of the strangest things in the painting is an object located in the center. It has not a defined shape, but we dare to think that it is a representation of himself as a sleeping and dreaming being. In contrast with our interpretation, some art critics think that painting of Dalí shows human beings like slaves of time because it governs us. Daily actions of people are determined by the time that they have. Day to day, individuals maintain an incessant fight against the time, but it does not stop for any reason. “Persistence of Memory” is a painting that tries to make us to understand that “time is limitless, but our time is limited” (Chace, 2015). However, over the years people consider time like an absolute definer. Salvador Dalí realized it and for this reason he drew melting clocks in order to express a new idea
about the time. The shape of these clocks express that time is not rigid. In other words, if we organize our time in a correct way, we can control it. It is like Gold Meir said once “We must learn to govern the clock, not be governed by it”. On the other hand, some people think that the painting is quite visually disagreeable at the beginning. This is because the painting has unattractive colors and it looks like artwork very poor in details. However, Dalí used the range of brown colors to express sadness, desolation and frustration. The idea of the lack of details is wrong because the painting has small things that mean a lot, but they are not observed with the naked eye. Even this painting is the least surreal of the entire Dalí’s art collection. The landscape, which depict the shores of its native Catalonia, can be considered as beautiful. To sum up, Dalí aims to show some interpretations of an unreal world like a dream. He wants to fool the human eye through his paintings.“The Persistence of Memory” fulfills the purpose of most of works of Dalí: causing confusing in the spectators. This painting only can happen in a dream. The emotional interpretation that this painting produces is mainly about time, which is the only real thing in the world, and it can have a fatalistic influence. The painters show their feelings through their works and Dalí made a great work because he shared his deepest dreams and emotions with us.

ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY
Is it a Good Idea to Legalize All? Emil Vega Yachay Tech
Is It a Good Idea to Legalize All? Imagine that we live in a country which marijuana is legal and you have a young son who wants to consume this drug. Do you feel that your son will be prepared to control the use of this drug? Nowadays, there are several countries where some hard drugs are legal. However, many people consider that drugs are one of the evils of the world. In contrast, Baum (2016) in his article “Legalize It All. How to Win the War on Drugs”, says, “Most of what we hate and fear about drugs - the violence, the overdoses, the criminality – derives from prohibition, not drugs”. Baum tries to explain that the cause of drugs are one of evils of the world is because they are prohibited. Baum supports the idea of legalization of some drugs. On the other hand, I consider that hard drugs like marijuana, cocaine and heroin should be banned because no one can assure us that this change in society helps to improve our lives. First, the effect of drugs in each person is different depending on the circumstances that the person is happening. That is to say, it can turn dangerous or even worse, lethal. For this reason, if the drugs were legalized we would need a group of professionals monitoring how a drug fits into a person’s life (Baum, 2016). This point is very important because the reasons which a person use drugs can determine whether these drugs are good or bad for him. In this way, legalization of all drugs is not a benefit at all. This promotes the drugs will be available for everybody and one of these people could be in a bad moment even he are thinking in kill himself. Therefore, while the drugs are not allowed the people are safer. Second, if we take the legalization of alcohol in the past as an example, we notice that it has not made great changes in our days because there are still many addicts who cause problems in our society. Baum (2016) says, “we’ll have to do a better job at legalizing drugs than we did at re-legalizing alcohol if we want to hold addiction to a
minimum, keep drugs away from children, assure drug purity and consistency of dosage, and limit drugged driving”. Taking in mind the words of Baum, we need to think that if legalization of alcohol did not produce any big help to the society what make us to think that legalization of drugs will do it. Actually, people do not follow the laws about drunk drivers. There are many accidents caused by drunk drivers. Likewise, no one can assure that legalization of drugs could improve the life of society. Drawing on the example of Colorado, which has allowed medical marijuana since 2000, this election has apparently helped to reduce crime. In Denver, city of the state of Colorado, “crime fell by almost two percent in 2014, the first year of full marijuana legalization” (Baum, 2016). The article says that if a country legalizes the drugs its rate of crimes will be lower. Furthermore, the article says that in the beginning of decriminalization there will be more consumption of drugs. When this moment won’t be popular the people leave to consume drugs and people will be quiet reducing the crimes in the society. According to the example of Colorado, we can not say that crime reduction is due to the legalization of marijuana because it is a slippery slope fallacy. Meaningly, crimes are not a direct consequence of illegal drugs. If a country wants to reduce the crimes it needs to do research on the kinds of crimes that are happening and found a good way to handle it. To support this point, we take in account the example of Portugal. In the article says (Baum, 2016), “the effect of drug decriminalization on crime in Portugal is murky. Some crimes strongly associated with drug use increased after decriminalization – street robberies went up by 66 percent, auto theft by is percent – but others dropped”. Therefore, we can not say that crime is not caused by illegal drugs.
To sum up, we can not trust in a government to decide if our son of daughter is prepared to know the drugs. The effect that drugs can cause in a person can be dangerous. Also, like the legalization of alcohol, nobody can assure us that legalization of drugs will produce good results. We should not allow that drugs will be legalized because our society is not going to be better at all.

FINAL RESEARCH PROJECT ESSAY
Ethics and Social Networks Emil Vega Yachay Tech
Abstract This paper explains several ethical issues in social networks like privacy, consent of content and appropriate terms of service. Also, it shows how the networks and their users can manage these issues. It analyzes three articles about ethical issues in social networks directed to the privacy, consent and development of their policies. It discusses the points of these articles and make some recommendations to users and networks. It has an example of an article which contends that employers can use Facebook to make a test to their employers to know whether they are able to the job. At the end, it has an opposite viewpoint of this article refuting its affirmation. You have to worry about terms of services of your social network and take care about what you are posting in it.
Ethics and Social Networks When Facebook became popular, many of my friends were Jehovah’s Witnesses. This religion has many rules and the church used Facebook to find out how my friends behavior was outside of the church. That is to say, how they behaved when their brothers of religion were not seeing. Is this a violation of privacy? Social networks have a powerful influence in the people and special influence in the youngest people. The social networks like: Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, Twitter; they are available to all of us. That is to say, even a child can have an account in these social networks. Are children able to handle these accounts? Do social networks regulate the content for eighteen years old or more? Most of users ignore whether the personal information that they post is really protected. Another question that should be analyzed is: Are people behaving ethically when they request friendships from people they do not even know? Ethical issues are current problem in the field of technology like human enhancement (Miah, 2016) and self-driving cars (Ted-Ed, 2015). Likewise, because social networks are very popular nowadays, there are several ethical issues that should be managed by the networks and their users. Social networks have several ethical issues like: Privacy/Anonymity/Confidentiality, Consent and Terms of Service/End-User Licence Agreements. In the article “Social Networking and Ethics”, there is a concern for computer science and the social networks which says, “Standing philosophical debates about whether privacy should be defined in terms of control over information (Elgesem, 1996), restricting access to information (Tavani, 2007) or contextual integrity (Nissenbaum, 2004) must now be re-examined in the light of the privacy practices of Facebook, Twitter and other social networking services” (Vallor, 2012). The ethical issues in social networks are being debated in the present days because many people are
worried about how their personal information is being managed. Social networks should have terms of service that consider the protection of information of their users. Moreover, these terms of service have to control the content of social networks because there are users of all ages. Therefore, the staff responsible for creating these terms should do research on what is the purpose of a social network and what users are able to handle these accounts. However, the most common ethical issue, and perhaps the most important concern about social networks is privacy. Good administration of privacy in social networks depends on networks and their users. The article “Social Networking and Ethics” says, “Users often minimize or fail to fully understand the implications of sharing information on social networking services, we may find that contrary to traditional views of information privacy, giving users greater control over their information-sharing practices may actually lead to decreased privacy for themselves or others” (Vallor, 2012). According to this article, the user needs to know more about what they should share in networks and networks need to control more the privacy of users to protect them. Nowadays, many users do not pay attention to what they are posting in their accounts. For this reason, networks have to make known how they are managing the privacy of the users. Also, social networks need to provide a guide for users to manage their privacy on their own. In this way, the privacy of users is ensured and protected. However, when you send or accept a friend request to strangers you are solely responsible for allowing that unknown people are surfing in your profile and viewing information that you have in your account. Taking this in mind, you have to consider your own security and keep your personal information away from strangers. On the other hand, social networks should worry about the content that people can share, like adult content, because there are kids surfing on their networks.
The second ethical issue in social networks is about consent of the content that the network and users can post. There is a paper called “Informed Consent in Social Media Use – The Gap between User Expectations and EU Personal Data Protection Law” which analyzes what is the correct set of criteria for consent (Custers, van der Hof, Schermer, Appleby-Arnold & Brockdorff, 2013). The criteria to consent what content should be in a social networks is being treated as an important ethical issue. The parents are worried about what their kids look for in the social networks. Many users post in their social networks pornographic photos. Also, some users send these photos to strangers even children. Moreover, these users do not block this kind of content, that is to say they post as public content. In this way, children are likely to encounter this kind of content. In the same way, employers have to worry about the information of their company. They can not post things that show confidential information or embarrass the prestige of their company. Indeed, users have to a lot to do with the management of the content in their networks. Therefore, networks have to find out a way to control the content that their users are publishing. For these reasons, to develop a social network you need to create terms of service which have to be analyzed and studied very hard. The creation of terms of service for a social networks is hard work for developers because they have to consider ethical issues. In the article “Ethics and Social Media: Where Should You Draw The Line?”, there is an analysis of whether ethics should be blended into social policies where Kristen Fyfe, senior communications manager at training and development association ASTD, points out the component that both ethics and social media must have in common to be successful. “Clarity is the most effective element for both ethics and social media policies," (Lauby, 2012). Social policies are very related to the creation of terms of service for a social network because these policies support the social rights of the people. Clarity among social policies and
ethics should be very close because it is necessary to understand what social policies are involved in social networks. For this reason, developers of terms of service have to do deep research on what social policies are better to protect the information of users. Furthermore, developers should consider the purpose of the network to know to which people it is directed. Perhaps, it is necessary to make a test to know who is able to have an account of this network. Also, if the network could have adult content, it will be restricted for children under 18. These things can protect the information of users and control the content that they are publishing. Nonetheless, networks cannot do a full job of protecting you and ensuring your rights to privacy. However, it is often up to the user to help ensure their own privacy. It is not just criminals that users should be wary of. Some employers use the information of social networks to do a test of personality to their candidates to the job. The article “Facebook Can Tell You If A Person Is Worth Hiring” contends that make a test of the profile of folks on Facebook can be a way to choose employees. Hill thinks that is a good idea to check the job candidates through Facebook. Hill (2012) quoted Kluemper in her article who is an author of a study published in the Journal of Applied Social Psychology, he says that a person “who is overly emotional in their postings would not be an attractive candidate”. In other words, employers look for more extroverted and cheerful people. Employers evaluate the photos, status updates, and conversations with friends, of their job candidates (Hill, 2012). However, this way to choose a good employer seems an ethical issue against the privacy of people. Nobody can access to this personal information if you do not allow it. Furthermore, this article has a very small sample of employers that form impressions of a candidate based on their Facebook page. Hence, the most of employers do not think that Facebook will be a good way to evaluate their job candidates.
Although is true that people personalize their Facebook pages a lot making it like a model of who are they, this does not mean that they are exactly these kind of people. That is to say, people spend time on Facebook because they are bored. Thus, they like many things because they want to be distracted. Therefore, this way to make a choice of an employee is not effective to judge if is a good candidate or not. Likewise, employers have no right to violate the privacy of others. This issue can be punished by the law. On the other hand, the article lacks of credibility because it has not enough evidences that the facebook was a good way to evaluate job candidates. However, the article has a sample of how many employers made an evaluation of job candidates through Facebook. There were 500 employers to ask but just 56 responded (Hill, 2012). Thus, this sample is very small, then it means that employers prefer other ways instead Facebook. In conclusion, Facebook is the most famous social network but it does not tell a lot about how people really are nor if they are good in their job. To sum up, privacy, content and terms of service of a social network are the principal points to consider when you create an account. Privacy and consent of content depend on networks and their users. In other words, users should be concerned about what they are publishing and who can view it, while networks should ensure that their content and privacy management are correct. The terms of services of a social network have to be studied in depth, considering social policies clearly to protect the information of their users. Taking in mind the anecdote of the beginning, watching people through their social networks like the Jehovah’s witnesses, is a violation to the privacy. Likewise, there are several ethical issues about how the networks and the users manage the privacy, the content and the creation of their terms of service. If you want safer social networks, it will depend on you and their policies. For this reason, you have to
worry about the terms of service of your social network and you have to think about what you can post and who will view it.
