Dear portfolio reader:
First of all I want to introduce myself. My name is Isaac Iglesias Palacios. I am from Quito and I am a Yachay Tech student. I am very grateful with you for take your time to read my English Language Portfolio and I hope you can enjoy it. Here you will find all the essays I made during level 6 English Course. In total there are four essays and the final research that reflects all my English progress and improvement. Each essay contains a lot of my ideas which were taken along the curse. In consequence, you can find different ideas about the topics which were developed, however I have to keep working to improve my ideas and my English. I am very excited to share you all the progress that I have had in all my English program.
I studied at “Unidad Educativa Salesiana Cardenal Spellman� high school. It is a bilingual school. We used to have forty minutes of English every day from Monday to Friday. For this reason I learned a lot of English, however the excess of English and the repeating things that teachers taught made me hate English a little due to I do not like the repetitive things and monotony. Also, one of my teachers did not teach us because he only sit and read a book while we did all the activities in our book. This thing happened for two years and I did not progress in English. Despite of this I graduated with plenty of knowledge about English language although I could have graduated knowing more English. After my graduation I was in an English course at ESPE University for six months. At this time I only remember some basic things about English such as grammar, vocabulary and listening but not writing. When I came to Yachay University, I began my English program in level 4 but unfortunately I lose the level because my attendance was
insufficient. Thus I have to repeat in first semester fourth level again. In this semester I realized that English is an important and necessary subject and people should study and be responsible in all the aspects. That was the reason why I was more responsible in English, nevertheless I kept distracting myself and sometimes I did not pay attention. It was very difficult for me to write because I cannot express my ideas in an orderly manner. In addition to this I had problems understanding the teacher's instructions. Despite this I approved fourth level in spite of my problems to organize my ideas and express it in a formal way. Then, one of my best experiences about English began in fifth level. In this semester I wanted to get my scholarship back so I dedicated as the best way as possible and I learned a lot about academic English. In fact, I improved my speaking and writing in many aspects, I was more fluid in these two features. Also, the analysis of each essay informed me of many things I did not know, in addition to doing my first research paper which made me read a lot. At first of my research I had many mistakes and for this reason I learned more with the help of the teacher who guided me and corrected my mistakes. In this semester I learned a lot but it not was enough for level six. Demotivated after not being able to recover the scholarship I began level six with “the wrong foot�. Due to I did was responsible like the last semester in addition that the schedule was very tired for me. Besides, my teacher was different from the last semester because he is very objective and stricter. However, this helped me a lot due to I have to be more responsible and dedicate more time for English and give the same importance for English as well as other subjects. The first essay was terrible. It was the worst grade I have ever had. After that I realized I had to pay more attention and become aware about my behavior. From that moment I did my homework and assignment in a better way, especially essays which were worked in class. The most difficult essay that I did this semester was the interpretation essay due to it was in groups and in this case I did not share the thinking of my partners. Finally I can say that all my way traveled along English program was awesome because I learned many things. In writing I organize my ideas better and it improves due to I increased my vocabulary especially transitive words. On the other hand, speaking is my effort, I feel that I can speak fluently if I know the topic that is developed. Everything that we learn is going to be very useful in the future. Sincerely.

The ethics of human enhancement: Are drugs really necessary in order to improve? Isaac Iglesias Yachay Tech University
Nowadays humans can improve their physical abilities as well as their capacity to think by some physical modifications in their bodies, but it is not the most ethical way. Scientists develop technology which allows people to enhance memory or reasoning capabilities. Also, humans are able to adapt in a faster way to the environment in addition to create new capacities. All these things happen by some brain modifications and alteration of biochemistry; this means that the enhancement of people is not natural. As a consequence of this, all the goals that people achieve, they do not achieve by themselves.
In an article called “the ethics of human enhancement�, it mentions that science allows people to be better than well. The author provides a list of enhancements which help the humanity such as living much longer, a different appearance to the people, improve their capabilities, an esthetic distinct. The use of drugs or a genetic modification is the way that they can do it. In other words, Andy Miah (the author) wants to express that, the enhancement of people is not natural, so it will have negative effects. To express this, he makes a comparison between people who uses technology to climb a mountain. He establishes that is the same as a shortcut because it is like climbing the mountain by helicopter and another person who climbs it by himself. The conclusion for this idea is undermine the achievement`s value. On the other hand, Andy tells the audience his disagreement with this way of enhancement due to all the achievements obtained would be by another different person. He refers another person because consume of drugs transforms the patient in someone else. Furthermore, the use of drugs may provide for consumer’s short term-gain, in other cases increase the strength or stimulate the creativity. However, drugs have side effects, these are a risk for health because human body needs always more and more, especially when consume of it is early. By last, the author intends to share his ethical point of view. To deepen he refers to the social system, how the society
reaction to this. Perhaps the society requires some rules to control it or people are able to control the enhancement, whatever of this two reasons society has to create awareness to consume in a moderate way like a global response. Andy makes an emphasis to remind the qualities of humanity due to it make the personality of the person and identity. He says that people should preserve their identity, even more the human principles.
According to the article, the author pretends to express his disagreement about the alteration of the biochemistry or some modifications in the brain. I think the same as him because the goals which people achieve will not make them by themselves. Can we imagine a person who is going to participate in the Olympic Games and he consumes drugs to increase his physical performance? I think that it is not correct. First of all, it is not fair for the other competitors, obviously for the competitors who train a lot and do all by their own efforts. Secondly, it has a negative effects because it affects a lot for the conscience of the consumer due undermine the achievement´s value. Finally, the author argues his ideas in a change of the human because the consumer transforms into someone else. In conclusion the enhancement in some cases is the same as cheating. On the other hand the modification of the brain means a lot of changes in general not only the capacities. As a consequence, it could be a change of the essence of the human. For me when a person changes the essence, he loses himself.
Andy gives an example to demonstrate the negative effects of the consume of drugs. Although this has nothing to do with drug addicts is important to emphasize the same point of view between the author and me because if we follow the idea, abusing of this products is not ethical. For example, when a student or a worker who sleeps little and
does not have enough energy to do other activities, he should consume something which makes him more concentrated is correct as my point of view. On the other hand, the early use of this substances can provoke the need to consume more and more because the effects decreases according the body's ability to receive substances. However, I partially disagree with part of the article and more exactly when the author says that biotechnology plays to be God. People always need technology to live, in this case to enhancement. We can stop a moment to think: What could happen if a baby is born without a leg? or What can an individual do if a kid needs to regenerate an organ? On one side it is correct follow the ethic, but nevertheless it is necessary to care about the human life. For me, playing to be God does not mean humans can create life or scientists can be cloning, in this case it means enhancement a person for his survival. As a last point I share the same thought with Andy due to society does not have a correct way of thinking. They have to create an awareness which should have principles about ethics. In the major of cases individuals who have power lose the control and abuse of it, in consequence that person loses himself and they are new people. People enhancement represents a big advance for the society, but if they do not use it in a right way, they could violate the ethics of enhancement. The author has the reason about the possibilities that could affect the essence of humanity. Finally, all the things that individuals do will not be by themselves. Bibliography

Marriages have evolved over time, but in some couples still exist some old attitudes. According to the story in that century many marriages were victims of the archetypes of society. This means that the attitudes in that time oppress the majority of women. Today, that costumes are still being practiced such as the lack of freedom, chauvinism and the non-independence of the women.
Some couples suffer the lack of freedom due to one of them tries to impose to do his or her things. Since that century women spent a lot of time in their houses, although it decreased some wife still spend their time in their houses instead of going to a party, going out with friends or doing exercise. This, things could happen because some men are jealous. In consequence, many women feel in their house like in a jail.
Chauvinism is a big factor for damaging the marriages because the majority of wives do not have the same rights compared with husbands. People think that the person who has to work is the man and the persona who has to cook, serve to her husband and sons and spend her time in their houses is the woman. On the other hand chauvinism has been disappearing more and more, but it never will disappear completely because some women are blind and do not realize what is happening. Although time passes chauvinism will never disappear. This happens because the fear of some of the wives is huge. Knowledge is an important fact to be an independence person. Most couples have a job which is used to maintain themselves. However a little group of wives do not have a job. In consequence they spend on their husbands. This is a big problem due to in many cases the abuse of the men is probable. In an extreme case could be violence, but a wife
depend on her husbands, so she cannot do anything to stop this. By the way, it is important to be independent no matter the age.
Although the time passes, some couples keep old costumes. This bad attitudes are hard to eliminate, it is remarkable due to people try to make it disappear for a long time and the only thing that they can achieve is decrease it. These are some reasons for believing that some attitudes since that age does not change, such as the freedom for wives and all her rights.

Currently, one of the best ways to catch society’s attention in order to transmit a message is by making something entertaining and easy to understand. Frequently, this communication system is used to let people know what is happening in the world. With this in mind, there are some problems that all human beings must need to be noticed about the pollution in order to be awareness of it. An example of the main global issues is the devastating impact in the environment which is caused by human beings. With the aim of searching a solution for this, that required that all people know about it, and then they should become aware of it. For this, Steve Cutts uses a short animation story called “Man�, in which he tries to show how each action made by human beings cause a huge devastation in the environment. To begin, it is important to know that in order to present the impact of human being in nature, there are many ways to illustrate different aspects of it. For example: pictures, books, documentaries, and short animations. Consequently, to portray some circumstances Cutts choses a short animation. In this gadget, the author exposes how human beings have been destroying their environment with the selfish aim of gaining their own comfort. To rephrase it, along the video people can see how the humanity destroys the nature because it brings to human raw material from which they can create stuff for its personal use. To understand this better, the short animation requires to be analyzed both in content and author. It is substantial to get to know Steve Cutts the author. He is a contemporaneous artist and a specialist with animation and cartoons which analyze and critique the modern human beings lifestyle. To do this, the author does a constant research and keeps himself informed. Due to this, he knows the different problems that are in the world such as: the pollution by human contamination, and the unnecessary exploitation of natural resources which include animals and plants. It is important to notice that the author defends animals,
because the majority of his video shows how human convert animals in food or objects. To exemplify it, along the video Steve exhibits the way animals are used as tasting makeup experiments, raw material for clothes, musical instruments, food and even toys. Indeed, the author makes a huge emphasis on the brutality that the industries use in order to accomplish all what is stated before. In the same way, the cruelty with which animals are exploited is one of the main reasons which motivated Steve in order to create a video in which the principal target is showing humans how they harm the environment, and with it raise awareness. This can be possible because as Dr Wayne Dyer said: “If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change�. It is true, that Cutts uses the video due to the fact that he wants draw the attention the society about the damage that is caused by human beings so, once this goal could be achieved Steve expects a social change. According to the video, a regular man walks around the nature, and every animal which comes close to him is converted into an object which makes him feel good. Then, the man keeps on taking advantage of animals to have more pleasure, and yet the nature is devastated- this fact does not matter to that human-. This part of the video exposes how the humanity misspends the natural recourse. This is the result of human being consumption, which allows the nature pollution to happen. To clarify it based on the video, when the man leaves the forest and comes into the urbanistic city. It is easy to see the nature's destruction. Granted, all this merciless lead the city to a collapse. By all means, the city becomes full of Garbage´s Mountains. In order to criticize it, the author makes a complaint. In addition, the human who appears on the video is ruthless and only thinks on the thing which contributes to his own happiness; this is a selfish but realistic feature of every
human being. This aspect calls the idea of consumerism which produces a lot of unnecessary materials which will eventually be trash. To explain it, the principal cause could be the urbanism, which leads the population growth and the increase of food and other sources demand. As a result, human beings must destroy natural habitats in order to create skyscrapers which means deserving animals, living wild animals without homes and more pollution in the environment by the machines that they used to build the cities and the factories which are working there. Accordingly, Steve maybe makes a possible prediction of planet´s future. That is to say, that he shows through a multimedia gadget the big impact that human beings produce on each simple, but very dangerous step that Steve makes around the environment. Consequently, every spectator can catch the video massage which is represented in a comic and very realistic way. Without doubt, the most important part of the video is at the end, specifically when the man arrives at the garbage mountain peak and looks very proud invert his destruction. To conclude, Steve Cutts wants to share his ideas about the misusing use of the natural resources in which animals and every living thing is considered such as raw materials. Although, the video is a cartoon and people in some cases do not take it seriously, it contains a serious massage which can impact every spectator. Steve has the reason about it. People can realize that humans have the incorrect behavior against nature they has been consuming for his own purpose all the raw materials. In consequence, the negative effects are very remarkable and the planet is being damaged day per day by the pollution and the society does not become awareness of it yet. Finally, it is important to keep in mind that the destruction is already done, so now the human being duty is to try to apologize the disturbance by making a correct and conscientious use of the different materials that the nature provides free to the humanity.

ENGLISH VS KICWA Isaac Iglesias Yachay Tech University
The global language is English and it is important to know it. People who speak this language have achieved a lot of benefits because they are great scientists or businessman. For this reason Ecuador should not replace English with Kichwa because this foreign language is very necessary in many ways for a business in international relations and it is very useful if we travel to another country.
The use of English in international relations is an important tool for the development of the economy in Ecuador. It is because the world powers speak this global language. For this Ecuadorians should learn English due to it helps to have more incomes. Also, if we want to communicate and make international relations, it is important to know how to speak it because international negotiators do not know how to speak kichwa. An important resource to travel is to know the language which is spoken in the place you want to visit. If people do not know, they should learn a language that most people speak such as English due to most of people know this foreign language.
To
demonstrate this, it is important to analyze what could happen if a personas traveled to another country. For example imagine that this person goes to China, probably he does not know how to visit a place, so he has to ask someone to locate this place. On the contrary kichwa does not work for this cases. However, teaching English instead of kichwa could avoid the cultural development of Ecuador and the inclusion for people who do not know English, but this foreign language is the global language and it is more necessary than this native language. Perhaps the use of Kichwa in Ecuador could be important to not lose roast, however people could teach both, but English in an intensive way to make relations with other countries and increase the incomes.
Maybe Kichwa can be useful to communicate with people in Ecuador and neighbor countries, but it is more useful to know English. In other words an important resource to communicate is to know the language that is spoken by most people. To conclude, Ecuador does not have to replace English with kichwa due to Kichwa does not help to the economic development of Ecuador, and the international relations could decrease instead of increase. Ecuador is the unique country which speak this language, so it only works in this country and Ecuador needs to create new relations with other countries and focus to increase incomes. References: 

Abstract This paper is aimed to provide the readers some information about the negative points of technology achievements. Many people do not realize that technology is causing a social impact and it could affect humans if they use technical devices in an incorrect way. Everyday technology advances as well as increasing the risk of using it. There will also be the details point by point about the negative aspect of technology such as: How technology devices isolate people, the privacy of each person, consumerism by society and the replacement of technological gadgets for workers. Also the paper includes something positive points about technology achievements. Key words: Technology, society, technology devices, negative point, internet.
“If we continue to develop our technology without wisdom or prudence, our servant may prove to be our executioner�. (O. Bradley, 1948). Technology is developing day by day in order to help people in many aspects such as communication, information news and some gadgets which facilitate daily life. However, society is at a point in history where very few people have given critical thought to new social realities created by technology and what those realities mean for the individual and society. It is caused due to people do not take advantage of it because they let themselves be controlled by technology instead of them controlling it. For this reason people are slaves of technology and this tool cannot be harnessed to the maximum as is the main idea of its creation. The wrong way of thinking caused by archetypes of technology makes that society use it in an incorrect way and this could have many dangerous consequences. This means that although technology has made a big progress, some people do not use it for the purpose of improvement, instead of it they use it in an incorrect way which damages the society.
Many of the electronic gadgets such as cellphones, internet, videogames consoles and television are causing people to isolate themselves from other people. This happens because most of them have at least one of the above-named electronic devices and they use it for unnecessary things that only cause a waste of time. Thus success has negative effects of society due to each of them concentrate more in social networks, TV shows, videogames instead of maintaining relationship with the outside world. In fact, it is normal to see walking on the street people with headphones and the only thing that they see is their cellphones. In consequence, they lose little by little the contact with families and friends. Currently, people can realize that in many social meetings some people prefer to be in interaction with their cellphones instead of interacting with other people or in the case of kids, they prefer watching their televisions instead of playing with other children.
In extreme cases technology make people addicted to electronic devices and it is very remarkable. As mentioned earlier the meetings with families and friends are a problem due to they are more interested in their cellphones. The major victims of this problem are teens who do not enjoy with people around them. This happens because teens are ruled by social networks. They are more interested in their Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, snapchat and others. By the way cellphones are tools that help teens to connect with these social networks. As Albert Einstein said “I fear the day that technology will surpass our human interaction the world will have a generation of idiots.� He refers that technology is dominating humanity because it controls society and makes people slaves of cellphones. In addition to the fact that adolescents get carried away by technology they are exposed to the different dangers of electronic devices.
Another negative point about technology is the risk of privacy and the unsafety which give to people. Many people have bank accounts, personal information in their social networks and mainly all the accounts that are connected by the internet. Everyone runs the risk of robbery or any type of harassment, regardless of age. Therefore it can be said that the internet is a big threat because it is a tool for hackers and people with bad intentions of making damage to someone else. For example, in the world exist a issue; many hackers who are able to invade any website with information that they are looking for. This means that people are not safe because hackers can make transfers from one bank account to another as well as exchange important information for something to buy different kind of things online. Around the world, several robberies of this type have been registered, e.g. According to Martin Evans one of the biggest cyber robberies in the history was registered in Britain. This event consisted of a robbery of a gang of Russian
based hackers that make money transfers around £650 million. The technique that they used is to try to infect networks by computer viruses, then these hackers infiltrate into banks internal computer system using a malware. Finally, this malware informs them about all the activities that the bank does, so they were informed about all the tactical movement. On the other hand another minor age group is affected by tricks on social networks. It consists in a scam about a person through a social network or some other medium. In most cases a person pretends to be someone else in order to steal, kidnap or in an extreme case commit sexual abuse. Several of these events have been reported worldwide, for example in England: “Complaints to police about alleged crimes linked to the use of Facebook and Twitter have increased by 780% in four years, resulting in about 650 people being charged last year, figures show” (the guardian , 2012). This means technology also creates danger because nobody is protected or safe in the event of a possible hacker attack. Many victims of these doings are people who do not use the technology in a responsible way, however they do everything to get these electronic gadgets
As a third point it is important to emphasize that the development of technology is generating more and more market objects which are used by most of society. In addition to pollution caused by factories, industries produce objects such as cell phones, laptops and technology objects that draw attention of people in a short period of time. This means that society wants to buy all these interesting things in order to be “fashionable” and it produces consumerism. This happens because technological devices generate innovation in very short times, generating high costs to acquire the new technologies. Nevertheless, people buy without thinking about the future debts. A very
clear example is the day of the release of the iPhone 7 when many people made long queues to purchase the product. Consumerism caused by technology make people lose control and buy cellphones, iPads, Tablets in an excessive way instead of a necessary way. On the other hand these mobile devices are not the only machines that exist, there is also more machines which work as if they were humans.
As a last point about technology achievements is the change of machinery instead of labor. Companies try to economize in the most efficient way possible therefore they try to get machines which will be more efficient. The machines are high tech and are capable of developing the same activities of a man. For this reason some companies replace their workers for high tech machines. “In Dongguan City, located in the central Guangdong province of China, a technology company has set up a factory run almost exclusively by robots, and the results are fascinating.� (Forrest, 2015). The author of this article explains that The Changying Precision Technology Company factory in Dongguan currently works with robotic arms to produce parts for cell phones. As a consequence, many employments were dismissed. At the beginning, there were approximately 650 employees, however when they were replaced with industrial machines there were 60 workers. Reasons like this make the advance of technology to have risks for society although in many cases technology serves for the development of humanity.
Taking into account, technology also helps a lot to society to improve the medicine, communication and facilitates some activities that people do which can be done in an easier way. Technology is not bad, the incorrect use of it can be harmful. Technology has been used in many fields of science that help the development of many things that society has in the present. According to Karehka Ramey “technology is applied to the
roles each individual fulfills during life. Society uses technology on a daily basis to accomplish specific tasks or interests. Modern Technology increases human capabilities and this technology has evolved with years.� (2012). Also he lists some benefits, for instance the access for information is easy to get, communication, efficiency and productivity and the most important changed the health industry. In brief, the advance of technology is important and necessary for human development. All these technological devices can be used in a negative way creating damage in different ways to some people.
For the most part, technology is necessary for human development and it helps to improve some aspects in daily activities. In contrast, many people do not use technology in a correct way and it creates danger. The best example to illustrate this is the cellphone due to the main idea of this mobile is facilitating the communication among people. Instead of it, they spent a lot of their time in their mobiles and it means people will be isolated. Each benefit has negative consequences, for example information can be gotten by everyone on internet. This is dangerous because exist issue inappropriate content or fake sites that people use to steal. As well as this example there are many more that show that the misuse of technology represents danger. Even though technology has been indispensable to the human development, it has negative consequences that affect to society. The unique responsible of this are people who use technology in an incorrect way.
To conclude, technology has achieved so much progress up to the point of being dangerous if people abuse the use of electronic devices or do not use it properly. At each point described above it is easy to realize that the technological devices are dominating the world controlling the society in different ways. That is to say these artefacts are
causing a social impact due to people do not have a control on them. However, without technology society would not have developed and would not have the devices that help humanity in medicine, to communicate and human development. Despite all this technology represents a weapon of double edge.
