LETTER DEAR READER: ____________________________________________________________

Jazmín Muñoz Yachay Tech Urcuquí, Ecuador July 6, Dear Portfolio Reader Hello, I am Jazmín Muñoz, thank you for reading my English Portfolio. Here I have collected the best information I have done during this semester. Those documents demonstrates the effort that I had during level 6, it contains four of my essays and my final project which is the most important semester’s assignment. I am proud of my achievements, because now I feel capable for have all my classes in English, which is the purpose of our university Yachay Tech, to have bilingual students In the following lines I will explain you how have been my experience in level 6, how was at the beginning and how I faced it, and how I am going to end it. Personally this course have helped me in grow as a person and also have prepared me as a professional. At the beginning I though this course is going to be horrible, last students told me that the level have a lot of work and is stressful but now I consider that yes it was a hard work but not horrible. Nowadays I have learn to write my essays correctly, it was not too difficult as I considered in the last semesters. At the present I have learn doing fast an essay in an hour and forty minutes. I have learned to work in groups, to be patient, also to choose good ideas for the essays to be perfect. I will never forget that the most important thing for make an essay is the thesis statement and the three or two arguments that defend the thesis. All of those things have improved my writing and I think is better than in former semesters. What about the speaking? The best thing, now I can speak fluently however I am shy with this but I can do it. I really liked to speak in a presentation of each essay. At the beginning
5
I was so nervous but with the time I have had to give presentation three or more times and almost at the end, me and my classmates did it with more confidence and let behind the nervously. The best of this semester was the debates that we did, I really enjoyed with that activity. Before I thought that a debate just were “give your position” but I have learn that is “to say your point of view supported in any article or in someone”. At the beginning me and my group lost the debates but with effort and organization the last debate we won, in spite of won I really liked the group work, the preparation we had for “fight”, the organization, the support that one gave to another, and the happiness that if you want you can. Finally, I think that it was a really nice experience, I really liked sharing this adventure with my classmates and teacher. I have enjoyed a lot be part of this course and in spite of hard homework, presentations, readings I have grown as a student, now I can write essays, research papers not as a professional but I can do it correctly, also I can understand better the English language and speak with another English speaker people, but principally I have grown as a person I have had a good time with my classmates, I have learn to share ideas, work in group so enjoy what you have, study hard at the end the feeling is extremely rewarding! Thank you again for reading this portfolio. I hope you like it and when you finish this course maybe you would agree with me. Now I am really happy to finish this. I am proud about me, the best wishes for you and your career I hope you have taken advantage about level 6 as I did. Sincerely Jazmín Muñoz

COGNITIVE EFFECTS
COGNITIVE EFFECTS WHEN PEOPLE LEARN NEW LANGUAGES
Jazmín Muñoz Universidad de Investigación de Tecnología Experimental YACHAY Course: L6-001 April 25, 2016

Cognitive effects when people learn new languages Did you know that learning another language help you to delay mental sickness like Alzheimer and helps you to improve your cognitive abilities? According studies of National Geographic 2013 it is possible, but what is cognition? “Cognition is a term referring to the mental processes involved in gaining knowledge and comprehension”. (Cherry, 2016) . Due to “Learning another language totally different helps increase the cognitive abilities like attention, perception, memory, intelligence and language.” Studying another language is helpful and better during the childhood, due to children are in a growing process and they can get knowledge easily (Smith, N,A). Also, this learning process help people not having in the future sickness like dementia and Alzheimer because it improves the working in some parts of the brain. (National Geographic, 2013). Finally, learning another languages also present some problems like cognitive strain for children. (Veria, 2010). In this text it will explain about the cognitive effects that produce learn another language during the childhood and adulthood. Psychology and pedagogy studies had shown that is beneficial to learn a second language during the childhood, the perfect ages for learning are during the first year of life, period when children are starting to learn and pronounce the firsts words (Windevoxhel, 2016). Children will be benefit because their brain is developing process and they can catch things easily. The benefits are divided in two forms, the first is when the brain starts increasing the neural connections and the second one is the fast learning. “Those abilities improve the cognitive effects like attention, understanding, perception, concentration and intelligence (Costa Rica Univerisia, 2015), abilities which will be useful during the academic and working life. The importance in the adulthood of have learn another language in the childhood is advantageous for people with age, due to it delay the early aging of the brain, is to say prevents
9
illness like dementia and Alzheimer. According studies did it by Bialistok (as cited in National Geographic, 2013) and others investigators shown that bilingual people have been detected with dementia four years after that the illness start, different as in people who know just one language. “So this suggest that the bilingualism is protecting to adults of age however the dementia start to attack cognitive abilities.”(National Geographic) Learning another language is not just beneficial for people, also according (Veria, 2010) it says that learning a second language have disadvantages especially during the childhood, due to it is a cognitive strain for children. “The learning of a new language limits children to learn new words”. (Veria, 2010) It says that children can learn just 20 words per month and if this individual learn two languages, the learning goes to the middle, 10 words for a native language and 10 words for the new language so it delay the fluency of the native language. For learning new things any age is good, nothing is late when you want to do it. It helps you improve your brain connection in different ways, the learning process in children is easier that in the adulthood, because they are in growing process and they catch thing fast. However studies said than is not beneficial due to is a cognitive strain for children, I think meanwhile you get knowledge it doesn’t affect you. The learning for adults it will be result some difficult due to they are not in learning process however it is possible, this will be helpful for them in the future for delay mental sickness such as dementia and Alzheimer, sickness which ones are developed in advanced ages. So the language learning have beneficial and similar cognitive effects as well as in children and adults.

BEING A WOMEN OF SCIENCE
FACTORS THAT DO NOT PERMIT WOMEN BE PART OF THE SCIENCE
Jazmín Muñoz Universidad de Investigación de Tecnología Experimental YACHAY Course: L6-001 Mayo 19, 2016 13
FACTORS THAT DO NOT PERMIT WOMEN BE PART OF THE SCIENCE “Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.” Aristotle. Did you know that is almost a century since women have been fighting for her rights, for have the same possibilities as a man? Women through the years has been fighting for the gender equality and even more for to become a scientists. It has been a difficult work due to in the world there are a lot of stereotypes that does not let women be part of science. For those reasons women are always looking for the equality of gender, women especially are discriminated in science for the cause that they don’t have the same opportunities as a man has. Also, during years females have been contributed in science, nevertheless they do not have been recognized with renown as a man. Finally Ecuador is a country with a few investigation nonetheless here there is a significant percentage with scientist women. Wording here let you know about the equality of gender in science, how women has contributed to the science and how women in Ecuador have developed the science. Female through the years have made a lot of contributions to science, woman represents just a 21% of science professors, in countries such United States. These reasons bring women face to the challenges in the word. In developed countries, still remains the inequality of gender due to women who has the same studies and doctorates cannot work with the same possibilities as a man. Also generally women paid is almost the 82% of a men salary, and even less in Europe. (Shen, 2013) This show that the women’s work is slighted however they are in developed countries in which ones should not exist imparity. In the world there is a big number of women who have contributed to science and have been forgotten as the years pass. The vast majority of people is related that scientist are generally men. If we make a fast search about the most important scientist, the result is going to be men. In Latin America there are women who have not recognize such us Marie Curie who won the Nobel Prize in Physic and Chemistry. One of the problems that the society also
14
has is not just women are slighted also the problem is woman leave the career in the middle of it for the stereotypes, they said “this work in not for me. (Iqbal, 2015) Ecuador is a small country located in the north of Latin America with almost 16.027.000 habitants (Orbyt, 2014). According UNESCO in the world there is just 28% of woman researches, and in Ecuador there is 63% men researches and only 37% of woman who are dedicated to make science, this percentage is a small compared with the percentage of the world. (UNESCO, s.f.) So women who have reached this achievements have had a hard work due to in the country there is not institutions who help students to have an under degree, it is to say for to be a scientist they should have to go to another countries and fight with the stereotypes, fight for arrive so far. Nowadays for being a women of science there are a lot of difficult however a few percentage of them have accomplished their achievements which represent 28% in the world. Women at the pass of years always have been fighting for the equality of gender, for have the same opportunities as a man. Also women would like that the stereotypes about science disappear. Although there are a lot of women who have contributed to science; they have not been recognized as a man, for example if we search about the top of scientist, the result always is going to be men as Albert Einstein, Isacc Newton, scientist with rename, but why not the society know about the contributions of Marie Curie, Esther Lederberg amazing woman who have given contributions to the science and which ones have change the world. Finally I think that those reasons are not going to be an obstacle for women, because if they have been fighting for years, they will continue doing until a day in which one the equality of gender would not be a dream and being a reality.

Running head: The Scream
The Scream Yamileth J. MuĂąoz, Kevin A. Ruiz, Ivette T. Chicaiza Yachay Tech University L6-001 June 19, 2016
18
"Sickness, insanity and death were the angels that surrounded my cradle and followed me all my life". (Munch. nd) This was one of the most important phrase that Edvard Munch used to justify the psychological-themed style in his work. There was several events which had powerful effects on the life of Munch, but one of the most significant was the death of his mother, who died when he was a child. His paintings always have shown a strong conviction toward to the tragedy, so the vast majority of his work have been represented through the expressionist movement. The most important painting was "The Scream", which was painted in 1893 and represents a strong feeling of fear and desperation, so we consider it is due to the author had a difficult life and it is expressed through this character with a silent scream. In general to define this painting we have to consider three relevant aspects such as the color, the shape and the meaning interpretation. These features make Munch paintings peculiar and unique representations of disaster and misfortune. Wording here let you know about important features about The Scream painting and how the color, shape and meaning make relevant this famous work. The work of Munch, as is characteristic of expressionism, shows strong and intense feeling, which are in perfect contrast with the colors. Munch seems to use contrasting elements to achieve a balanced composition. The straight lines seem to balance the curved lines, and, at the same time, the cold colors appear to balance the warm reds and yellows (MVLP, 2001). According to this and as is common, in the artistic field, feeling like desperation, preoccupation and fear are represented through dark or cold colors. This painting also shows warm colors, which in this case, give support to the intention of the work, because colors like orange and red represent passion and convicti on for something or someone. So for an adequate interpretation of this painting must be taken into account that warm colors give emphasis, it means greater strength, to feeling which
19
are represented by cold colors, such as depression and anxiety. Definitely the author is extremely sagacious to create a harmonic contrast to improve the expressivity level of the painting, making it a peculiar combination of opposite colors. This is a painting which has just curvaceous and linear shape. It is simply a figures combination but with a deep meaning. It is in two dimensions with width and long. The main figure that the paint has is a person who is giving a scream of despair, which is in the center of the picture. It is a painting which have a curvaceous geometric lines with two figures behind the screamer, those figures looks like two people with hat walking in the screamer direction. The screamer is next to the pier, figure that is aligned with the paint and is the one which doesn’t have curvaceous shape. Shabi, K., (2013). “The Scream” painting is mainly about misfortune as many of his paintings where personal tragedies, illnesses and failures were the principal ingredients that make up his creative work. Looking at this painting we can considerer it as a visual autobiography because as Munch said (n.d): “My sufferings are part of myself and my art.”, so when he painted it, he based on a daily situation that he lived when he was young. The twisted character of unknown sex on this painting has mouth and eyes open that express a horror scream due to the recreation of a vision that he had when he was walking with two friends at melancholic sunset. This situation allowed him to create a new piece of art where the main character was set of elements of this day, such as "air turned to blood", "faces of my comrades became a garish yellowwhite.", and "a huge endless scream through nature", wrote Munch in his diary. Vickers, H., (2013). Clearly the most important thing for artists is the message that they try to communicate to their spectators. About “The Scream”, is one of the most famous pieces of art around the world due is based in the expressionism. The painting tries to show the deepest and darkest feelings that Edvard Munch had in his life. It makes especial reference to color, shape that create a harmonic
20
combination, which establishes the perfect point between tragedy and misfortune. The colors that are shown represents the each season of the year. Finally There are many ways to interpret a piece of art because of different objective and subjective points of view, but the meaning of this will be the same if we understand what the authors want to express.

The Students Living Adaptation
The Students Living Adaptation on Campus How Affect them and how they Solve it Yamileth Jazmín Muñoz Mejía Universidad de Investigación de Tecnología Experimental YACHAY TECH Course: L6-001 July 7, 2016
27
Abstract Adaptation is a process that almost all of humans have to master in life. Since we were born we are submitted a new and constant changes, such us the first step, the first day in class, the first job and things that make our life different. Admission to the university could be an important critic point due to the student have to adapt to new people with different social status, different origin and culture (Sånchez Padilla ML, nd). Go to the university also have another factors that students have to deal with such as the alimentation, live independently, take mange personal finances, do homework. During this stage, the family is frequently absent and for them start a new life from youth to adulthood. During this process the university have a really important role in students adaptation due to they have the right to provide wellness to the university community. They have to be focused in the relationship between students, professors, and all of the members of the university. Sometimes it could turn hard for some students and can cause college dropout or deep depression. That is why the justification that those entities should take care students and be pending for not to deal with this situations. In the next lines it is going to be explain how Yachay’s students have adapted in the campus at the beginning and how they preserve the relationship with the community. Also it is explained how students keep the relationship and how they have live this experience. Keywords: freshman, adaptation, university, students.
28
Dilemma in Practice When we start a new experience in our life hardly ever is difficult have an adaptation. In this case it is going to be explained the difficulties that the university adaptation has in Yachay’s students. Young people who want to continue studying have changes in their life. When we have to choose what we want to study, we are confused. There are always questions such us Am going to love to do this? Is this a suitable career for me? Am I capable to do this? And a many other questions that are prowling our head. When we finally have chosen what we want, a new question starts; which university would be the best to study for 5 or more years? So after this situation have turned stressful chosen a good university has consequences in the student life such as live far away home, live alone, be responsible for themselves. Those difficulties are too strong at the beginning, some students can overcome the situation and can have a good adaptation in a few or large time it depends of each person. But what happens with people who cannot tolerate this situation? Those people have a hard work and have to face to their classmates, sometimes with roommates, professors. Occasionally it can be too hard but with university’s help and own will this can turned a good experience.
29
Literature Review When a university’s life start, people is submitted to a lot of changes, one of them is starting an adulthood life and let behind the adolescence and be responsible by themselves. Another changes that student are going to have is to live far away, live alone without parents, have a good grades and make new friends. Those aspects could bring a lot of problems in students such as anxiety and depression. (Diana Sarokhani, 2013) . Recently studies have shown that students that start to study in early ages have less problems to adaptation than the others students, also this show that the students which have problems to adaptation dropout the school and the others have finished, that’s why the motivation that universities should have to have with the freshmen is essential. In some universities of United States principally are focus in issue of freshmen, because the adaptation is going to be a crucial part of the university life that a student is going to have. (Al-Mahrooqi & Denman) A good amount of students are depressed in the life of a university student. They have similar symptoms, like they always want to cry, they feel alone, they do not find life’s sense. The rates of students with depression cannot be exactly due to not all of students pray for help, some of them keep the problems for themselves. This percentage is around two-third which amount is more than half. (Diana Sarokhani, 2013) When a student arrive to the university is going to face with people that don not know, people with different culture, different linguistic, different characteristics, is like a new beginning. This process have a factors that do not let students adapt to the new environment, those factors are the gender, self-esteem, the students expectations. If those factors are not how students hope they will have problems in the university and also in their daily life. (AlMahrooqi & Denman)
30
A poor adaptation could bring a lot of problems with students because deal with the new environment is not always good idea. Students could develop stress, dropouts, due to not all the students are emotionally similar and each one have to solve their problems differently. (Al-Mahrooqi & Denman) When students start the university they arrive to make their dreams real. They go with the best disposition, and after they arrive they have to face with reality that it is not the same as in the college. They have more pressure, more homework, vocational doubts, social incommodity situations that bring the student have adaptation problems and also physical discomforts those things not let student have a healthy permanence in the university. (Sรกnchez Padilla ML, n.d) As is known all of people have different kind of think, and also they have different ways for solve problems. A young with 12-14 years old have different way to think and also for give solution to their problems, also adolescents who is in age of since 18 and so on. All of them have different mechanism of mental process and also intellectual abilities which ones are developed with the time, and which ones would be used for solve problems. (Sternberg & Richard, 1994) Students have the engagement to have a communication with others. This engagement is going to build good networks. In this process the university have to work with students is not just a work of one part, all of them have to work for have benefits and help to the student have good stay. (McEwan, 2009) The university also have an important role for adapt the freshmen to the university. Start solving problems is not going to be just part of the university, also the students have an important part in this process. Universities should consider offer to the students the opportunities that they have, also they might make socialization activities for that students know each other and start a good build network relationship. (McEwan, 2009)
31
Students also have an important part in this process they should develop their abilities for start a new life, due for a freshman adapt to the university first the student have to learn to communicate with others, make friends is a useful strategic for adaptation this could be helpful for integrate to a group. Because if students don not have contact they could have an apprehension communication this refers to “an individual’s level of fear or anxiety associated with either real or anticipated communication with another person or persons” (McEwan, 2009) According said that modern students are capable for adapting a new changes. Those people have to endure the problems and solve them easily with maturity. Their view of events is extremely flexible. Those students have a global vision of situation such as be actualized with the technology, self-control, capacitive for initiative, and be capable for adapting so for them student’s adaptation is a term which refers to be a modern student. ((«Las 12 habilidades que todo/a estudiante de hoy en día debería tener», n.d.)
32
Application In the following research I considered useful to make an interview for people who could made easier my investigation. I included one person from psychology apartment in this case Jenny Rivadeneira our psychology with a kind of interview, and also I made another interview for ask three students, people who live in campus and have left their homes for to come to study. They have to adapt to a new environment such live by themselves establish a relationship with professors, and deal with the academic requirements. Implications that the vast majority of students have when they admission to the university. The tools used in this project were qualitative, due to is better understand perspectives and ideas instead of numbers. Qualitative research is designed to reveal a target audience’s range of behavior and the perceptions that drive it with reference to specific topics or issues. It uses in-depth studies of small groups of people to guide and support the construction of hypotheses. The results of qualitative research are descriptive rather than predictive (What is Qualitative Research? - Qualitative Research Consultants Association, s. f.) Which consist in make interviews, this was focus in understand and delimit the problem, understand the problems that students have at the beginning and how they solve it. This also was focus in see the important role and responsibility that the university has with students and the community who makes part of the university, for have a good stay and good relationships. I chose Jenny Rivadeneira because I considered that she was a person who always is pendent about students since Leveling, when we were freshmen she was the person who help us in motivated situations. She though us about the respect that we have to have in houses also she showed us the rights that we have and the responsibility with the university. Another fact was because she is a specialist in psychology and before I started this investigation I went to talk with her for get knowledge about her point of view of this topic and she gave me good instructions and opinions. 33
When I though who were the perfect students for make my investigation I though in three friends they are from different part of Ecuador, they live in campus and came from living with parents to live alone. I chose them for understand the process they have to adapt to new changes, to new situation to live with people unknown, to know how they endure with the situation to live by themselves and show they solve problems with maturity. For make this investigation organized and clear I use a schedule for develop the activities, and I divided in two interviews one for three students and another one for an expert from the university in this case the university’s psychology. Results The results of this interview about this search were the following. I concluded in the first question that students had different expectations before come the university. At the beginning all of them come for to make their dreams real and when they are in the university they have to face with the reality. As a student answer “I was very excited when I arrived to the campus but after, I could notice it is difficult to live by myself, and far away from my family”. Also I t is normal that students at the beginning feel nervous and have adaptation problems because they did not know nobody and they have to start making friends, and establish good relationships, it can be a hard work. But after this stage now they feel like in home. The recurrent thought that all of them have is that they could adapt and make friends. The university has an important role for freshman during the first days and also for provide a good permanence in campus. For this situation it contributes since the beginning making activities to have integration between the students. The students said that the first or most important thing is when a team explain students how is the environment in the university, they give them tips that student should to follow. As a student said “first the student welfare team helped us with talks about how our life would be and the rules that we should follow” However the adaptation of each person is necessary have a support at the beginning. I also have concluded that as in Yachay’s campus student live there they frequently have problems with roommates and for solving problems they prefer talk openly with the people involved from the beginning and after have an agreement and have a healthy permanence. One important fact is that students recognize and also the psychologist that the university comply their part with adaptation Yachay Tech have activities that develop when freshmen arrive to the campus and students admit that this help have been good during the stay, also the university not just have activities for freshmen also is dedicated for all of the
37
Yachay’s community with events that provide the relationship between students, professors an all of the administrative staff such as they present a movie each week, organize sport activities, as well as scientific conferences and also a new one that is a series of conference about peace culture. Finally the students who have answered those questions did not present the need to visit the psychology department. Also students know that if something is not good with them, they always are going to be pendant and working for students’ well-being.
38
Reflection The vast majority of students have to deal with the admission during the university stage, it can turn stressful. It also constitutes the beginning of a new life. Students have to live by themselves, live far away from parents have to create a new relationship with professors, classmates, and in this case with roommates. Sometimes they have to face with people with different social status, education, and they have to try to have a good stay there. Go to the university can make developed situation such as stress, depression. In this adaptation period students go from a personal phenomenon that are solved according the maturity of each one, for some of them the adaptation could be easier for some people but too difficult for another. Also the university have an important role for student’s adaptation it is an obligation help to freshman and all of the students have a good relationship and if is necessary some extra help give and be pending. Those changes could be too hard for all of the students who admission to the university but with the university help, and with own will the stay in the campus could be one of the best experience in life.

Student 1 Before I started the university. I thought that it could be difficult, but when I came here, -I realized that I would find good friends. This fact made everything easier for me.

Student 2 I came to make my dreams real. I was very excited when I was arrived to the campus. After, I could notice It is some hard live alone and live with my family far away because I do not have the support or the advices of my family. However, everybody has to be independent if they want to get their own live. Moreover, I just wanted to study very hard when I arrived here, and I am doing it. I personally think it is enough my family`s motivation to go on at university and become an excellent professional even when I just want to stay with them.

Student 1 At the beginning I was sad and nervous, because I did not know nobody neither their tradition. Now I feel the university like my home.
Student 2 I felt some nervous because I did not know how it would be my first day at university but it was fun. My relationship with professors and friends was very nice because here you can find different people, natives of different cities. It means you can share your different customs, your different way of seeing things, different projects, different thoughts, and you can learn of each thing that you can experiment with them.
Student 3 When I started the university fortunately, I got a good friendship with my housemates, and classmates. We never had problems for space and schedules, but sometimes we had problems with clutter in the room. Teachers helped us to understand the new world in which we would live. And the staff helped us with the needs we had.

Student 1 I had trouble with my roommate because he was not organized. So, one day I talked to him and we reached an agreement.
Student 2 Sometimes I asked my friends for help but I also asked my mom for help when I had problems.

The student have the problems of auto regulation with schedules, a lot of people realized what implies to be far away from family and come to Yachay and they miss their family, the first midterm is a crucial point they change emotionality and miss the important role that the family has in their life.
