PORTFOLIO LETTER
Jeremy Zenteno I-2 Yachay Tech University Urcuqui, Imbabura, Ecuador
December 8, 2016
Dear Portafolio Reader
I am Jeremy Zenteno. Thank you very much for reading my English language portfolio. It is a collection of my best work in English, and it demonstrates my ability as an English learner at Yachay Tech. I am one of the first generation students at Yachay Tech and its mean several problems related to organization of university such as classes, houses, teachers, and other problems that makes us time in Yachay Tech a little bit more difficult than other generations of students. In addition, the consequences of these problems are many even related to English classes that are the worst, due to when we were in leveling course we did not have a defined leveling of English, and in first semester English classes was deleted as subject its means a lot of wasted time English learning and understanding difficulties, be behind schedule in contrast to other students. In fact, the students that did not have a good level of English might fail two levels that means one year of classes and less understanding of material in English. But, not of all is bad, in classes we developed a lot of techniques to improve our skills and we made English our second language, with patient and excellent teachers that helped us every day and give us good feedback to correct our mistakes when the teachers give back the exam. I was designated in level three when I start the english course in Yachay. Every essay or presentation that I have had in this english course I try to persuade and report about a huge problem that I think we have to become aware or a topic that is related to my career. For example, this academic period I focus on environmental awareness because I want to implement a culture of recycling on Yachay Tech, and I have shown the problems and the terrible consequences that human species activities produce. In fact, I wish that just one of some of the ideas that I presented was useful for someone in the class because the problems that will come are bad and we have to be ready.
When the semester starts my first goal was to be more fluid when I talk, and understand easily when I hear sentences or in a conversation do not have any problem of communication. I wanted to understand a entire movie without subtitles, because I can listen and understand some words, but I do not understand the complete idea of the conversation or the sentence, and I want to take some online courses related to my career in English. But, I have had a problem in this semester and it is the time that I have to practice English, due to in this semester I take the career and I have not had sufficinet time to practice enough English to approach entirely my goals that I proposed to myself at the beginning of this semester. However, I practice every day and I try to read a lot of papers and books in English to understand several words that are important in my career. During this semester I improved many skills very much, for example, at the beginning of the academic period was difficult to me organize several ideas and also writing these ideas. In speaking, I improve some skills because I can use transitions words in sentences more easily and give better ideas when I talk, and improve very much my pronunciation because several words I did not pronounce clear and people cannot understand the ideas that I want to give. For example, one day in Quito two girls wanted to go to “Plaza Foch” in the “Ecovia” public transport, the problem was the ticket-taker cannot give them a good explanation about the address, due to his pronunciation was very bad, then I near to these two girls and talk with them and I can give a good explanation about the address that they want to go, and while we traveling they talk with me about their lives and their travels, and this experience help to me to improve my skills in speaking because I could get a normal conversation with a native English speaking. In speaking, I feel god but no satisfied, due to I still not speak fluently and give a clear idea in English and that is a problem in class, debates, and presentations because I cannot give the completeness or the real idea that I want to give, but in conversations I am more fluency. In writing, I improve several skills to give an understanding essays, make a good slides to my presentations, give a good feedback with constructive criticism to help my classmates and in the future they do a better job in their essays and presentations. My strength as a writer is using one of the best tools that teachers teach us it is the brain storm that helps to organize your ideas and get a clear idea that you will focus when you write your essay. As a speaker is easy to organize some ideas and speak for example, the movies and TV series that I have watched until now help me to learn some phrases and ideas then when I speak about some topic or talk with someone these phrases help to me to get a good conversation. Every essay and presentation that I have done in this semester have a purpose in this semester I try to persuade about human species pollution and the consequences. I think I get my objective, because the ideas about the consequences are terrible, and I organized my ideas very good to attract the attention of the class and persuade about my topic, in addition, every presentation and essay I want to people to get the new way of thinking about pollution and animal extinction, and
do several little actions related to recycling and animal care, in fact I try to present what I love and what I want. Thank you again for reading my portfolio. I put in a great deal of effort into my portfolio, and I hope you enjoy reading it. I am confident that you will agree with me that I have become more proficient in English and am ready to pursue my career.
Kinds regards,
Jeremee Zenteno

1 Running head: RACISM AND INEQUALITY IN SCHOOLS THE BAD FACTOR IN SOCIETY.
Racism and Inequality are a Big Problem in Educational System Where the Affected are Students Jeremee Zenteno Sanchez

As Nelson Mandela mentioned “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”. In fact, education must be equal for all students regardless the race of student, economic status and other kind of racism. Linda Darling-Hammond is Professor of Education at the Stanford Graduate School of Education and CEO of the Learning Policy Institute. He wrote and edited more than a dozen books and more than 300 articles on education policy and practice. Her work concentrates on school reestablishment, teacher education, and equity in education. (Stanford,2016). According to the article “Unequal Opportunity: Race and Education” that published it on spring 1998. In this article Darling think the society and governments have to be against racism and inequality in schools, in contrast Darling claims equality education and identity distribution of money for all schools in country. As an personal experience, when I was a child, me and my sisters have a great friends they are Afro-American people, they have a lot of money because they father was a famous soccer player. Then, we request to their father if he could matriculate to their daughters in our school because in this time our schools had a good prestige. The problem became when the rector denied the matriculate to their daughter, because the rector said this schools in not for Afro-Americans or indigenes. According to Darling inequality and racism is a great problem in educational system that still continues today. White or non/Asian people have more opportunities to study than afro/American or Latin people because some of the lives in a communities or places where they do not contribute a lot of money in property taxes and quality of schools are not adequate. Students with low resources cannot enter a high quality schools. Based on social status students obtain different kind of quality education, as consequence their knowledge are not good or not
3
have enough knowledge that they should have in comparison with other students in high quality schools. Teachers also do not have a good education or are not prepared enough to teaching in class. In addition, schools do not have enough materials, books, laboratories, and technology to make a didactic and interactive class.(Darling,2016) Spending money inadequately produces a worst result in schools as a space in classrooms, high level qualified teachers, high quality curriculum and also materials in classes. According to economist Helen Ladd the difference between the high and low record schools was interpreted by teacher qualifications and classroom size than by poverty, race, and parent education (Darling,2016) Schools in low resources places have less expected to get a teachers with a significant degree to teaching in a good way and efficient curriculum include they do not understand about skills and problems that each student has in class because monthly salary in poor places are very low than other schools. In fact, we can see the skin color or race do not affect in any way to intelligence.(Darling,2016) The factor that affect to students is the quality of education no other kind of factors as racist people thinking that people with other skin color or poor people do not have the same intelligence than other people as white or Asian. Students that graduated in poor or low resources schools may not continue their studies in college, because their knowledge that obtain through school are non-enough to accept in a college. Then, they should work in another area that is not necessary have an academic education. In other schools which have good teachers in their classrooms, materials and technology will have a good effect in their students, for example some of students that finish in their schools normally attend college and will have a good job where can earn a better salary than others.(Darling,2016)
4
In fact, the article that Linda Darling-Hammong “Unequal Opportunity: Race and Education” are very interesting about the racism and inequality. The purpose is inform about this problem that have a bad results in our society, also persuade that all of us have to oppose to this problem and together find a solution. Audience, is public in general like as students, teachers, and others who want to understand and learning about it problem. Language that Darling uses in this essay are formal and is easy to follow the ideas and understand what Darling wants to said and the main idea of the article. Linda Darling-Hammond in her article focus in racism and inequality in schools in fact, people who have a lot of money have a quality education. But the great point of view of her are teachers and curriculum are the principal factor in quality of schools. Teachers in several schools have a bachelor degree but it degree is no necessary or efficient to teaching in school because these teachers do not know much about students skills and problems in fact, teachers with bachelor’s degree are no enough efficient to help students to increase their knowledge.

RUNNING HEAD: INTERPRETATION TO THE SCREAM
“The Scream” as a symbol of tragedy by Edvard Munch Chandi Villarroel Franz Alexander, Imaicela Ordóñez Gloria Ginela, Zenteno Sanchez Jeremee Paul. Yachay University for Experimental Technology and Research
“The Scream” as a symbol of tragedy by Edvard Munch
1
“The Scream” as a symbol of tragedy by Edvard Munch "For as long as I can remember I have suffered from a deep feeling of anxiety which I have tried to express in my art"(Edvard Munch Quotes, n.d.). With this phrase, Edvard Munch reflects the conception of his artworks through the experience of pain, hatred, love and other emotions. Edvard Munch was a renowned Norwegian painter belonging to the expressionism movement, due to the drama and intensity that include his works. His life was marked by tragedy and anguish for family losses, for that he tries to capture that in his paintings. One of his most outstanding works is " The Scream ". "The Scream" was painted in 1893 in Paris. Munch made different versions of this painting. Currently the most famous version is in the National Gallery of Oslo. All versions show a desperate man and along with him the world around him. “The Scream” is considered a symbol of tragedy due to the way in which painting is related to author's life, characteristics that involves this painting and the interpretation of each detail that composes the painting. “The scream” symbolizes tragedy and despair because it may reflect the difficult life of Munch who saw his mother and his sister die of tuberculosis. His other sister had bipolar disorder. In addition, he was educated by a fervent religious father (The Scream, 1893 by Edvard Munch, n.d.). As a result, Munch was psychologically anguished when he was developing “The Scream”. Based on Munch’s diary, Munch had his inspiration on January 22, 1892 when he was walking with two friends on a bridge. There the sunset produced feelings to Munch that caused him a panic attack. In Munch words “I stood there trembling with anxiety—and I felt a vast infinite scream through nature.” (Paulson, n.d.). So, the motivation of Munch to paint “The Scream” is the scream that he felt. Maybe that scream came from a slaughterhouse or an asylum since at that time, his mentally ill sister was hospitalized in an asylum nearby to the place showed in “The

Scream” as well as a slaughterhouse. So, Munch could have been motivated by the shouts of the slaughterhouse or the asylum (Shaby, 2013). The techniques used in this painting has the intention to emphasize the tragedy of this painting. For this, Munch used mixed oil, tempera, pastel and crayon on cardboard and measures are 91 cm by 64 cm. The main elements of the painting are a cadaverous person with its hands on its face simulating a scream or evading some noise with despair. In the back, there are two people who look indifferent to the situation and the scene is developed in a sad scenery in landscape of a lookout or bridge. In his work, he used warm and aggressive colors, predominant orange and blue to create a cold and sad environment. The strokes are in the form of vertical curved and diagonal lines so it can delimit each element and space that make up the painting. "The scream" uses as valuable tools the relationship between lines and colors to reinforce and transmit the feeling of anguish and melancholy in the painting. The 1895 pastel-on-board version of the painting was sold at Sotheby's for a record US$120 million at auction on 2 May 2012 (The Scream, 1893 by Edvard Munch, n.d.). “The Scream” is the second most famous painting in the world after “Mona Lisa” by Leonardo da Vinci. In addition, “The Scream” has many interpretations due to its expressive design. For example, one of they are related to nature as major figure of the painting. However, the principal interpretation is existential anguish of the modern man in the transition of the nineteenth century to the twentieth century due to great technological advances. This existential anguish is showed in the feelings of loneliness, discouragement, and desperation of “The Scream”. This interpretation has logical sense because in the picture we can see a shocking person with his eyes extremely opened who release a terrible scream; two figures on the bridge; and a boat. In fact, everything has a sense of heavy horror. In “The Scream” painting, colors try to show feelings as

anguish and desperation. Also, other important thing is that the painting express a sound, a scream. (Sooke, 2016) In conclusion, “The Scream” has a psychological and psychological motivation. Psychological, as it is the anxiety of the author due to his difficult childhood. Physiological, as it is the hearing of a scream coming from a slaughterhouse or an asylum. In addition, the important facts of the painting are the feelings and the sound that it express through its colors and strokes drawn. On the other hand, the painting has several interpretations due to its expressive design. The principal interpretation is existential anguish of the modern man which are his feelings of loneliness and his desperation.

Argumentation Essay
Running head: DRUGS LEGALIZATION THE WORST CURRENT PROBLEM IN SOCIETY 1
The Problems Related to Drugs Legalization and the Probably Solution Jeremee Zenteno Yachay University of Experimental Technology and Research Lvl 6 019
THE HUGE PROBLEM WITH DRUGS 2
“Only tiny percentages of people who have sample one of the big four (cocaine, methamphetamine, heroine,..); Have used that drug(marihuana) (Baun, 2016). With this quote I try to give an example about the *dangerous of consume drugs due to if you consume drugs, you probably will be used other kind of drugs. In history people have consumed drugs, and society look that people as unproductive and bad people, in addition drugs is a polemic topic in the world and in this essay I focused in three points to support my ideas. In fact, I disagree with Dan Burn’s article for three reasons ; Mafia or black market will not disappear, legalized drugs could not reduce the crimes, and the bad consequences of the people that are drug addict. Due to for these three reasons I support the idea of disagree about the drugs legalized. Legalized drugs could reduce crime related to drug business, but not reduce the violence, murders, vehicle accidents, and different kind of crimes that happened under the influence of drugs(Baun,2016). Many people say the crimes related to drugs will disappear if drugs are legalized, but how about the criminals who do crimes under the influence of drugs. Maybe drug trafficking could reduce and other kind of crimes if drugs are legalized. For example, think about the next episode; you go with your family to your house after a great Sunday in this moment a car crash your car and your family die, except you the man who has driven the car was under the influence of drug. The black market or mafia will not disappear if drugs are legalized. Obviously mafia currently are focused on drug trafficking and all other business related to drugs. In several countries and more in Latin America drug trafficking could be related to governments or presidents in countries, and the money that drugs generate could help the economy of the country. The problem is if the drugs are legalized, mafia will disappear. Due to drug trafficking are one of many business of the mafia and black market. For example, Al Capone in EEUU was the most famous criminal, but he did not work with drugs, his business was illegal alcohol. In fact, if the drugs are legalized mafia or black market will take the control of other illegal business as human trafficking.(Baun,2016) People who become addicted to drugs, most likely lost their job easily, their families abandon or expel them, are infected by terrible illness related to drugs or sex, and other several consequences that affect in bad way the daily life of the addict. The future of an addict are not the best, and it is not easy to rehabilitate, almost always after a therapy people get a bad psychological effects, for example, some people commit suicide, kill other people and other bad consequences. Currently several parents are addicts that means they are a bad example for they children, and it means probably these children will be addicts in the future. The future of teenager addict is not good it could not have a good job, could be homeless, or could kill other people just for drugs. In fact if the drugs will be legalized, several teenagers become addicts, and it is not efficient for a society even for a country. (Baun, 2016)
THE HUGE PROBLEM WITH DRUGS 3
In conclusion, I disagree about legalized drugs and I take several ideas of the essay “How to win war drugs” by Dan Baun. Legalize drugs could reduce crimes related to drug trafficking, but do not decrease the number of crimes under influence of drugs. The black market and mafia related to drugs business will not disappear if drugs are legalized because are one of many business that mafia have. The future of teenagers addicts will not be better, they will not have a good job, could become criminals and other consequences. The solution is not legalized drugs, but legalized a small amount of drugs that people can have without a problem, for example, in Ecuador people just can get a small amount of marihuana. This solution could help to reduce the business of drug trafficking and black market that mafia controlling.

Final Research Project Essay
Running head: THE SIXTH MASS EXTINCTION DUE TO HUMAN SPECIES ACTIVITIES 2
The Worst Consequence of the Human Species Activities: The Sixth Mass Extinction Jeremee Zenteno Yachay University of Experimental Technology and Research
THE SIXTH MASS EXTINCTION 3
Abstract Since the human species appear in the world a lot of problems come with them, for example; air and environmental pollution(oceans and continents), and kill several species of animals without a reasonable reason are the principal problems. The consequences related to the destruction of the earth and extinction of species of animals are innumerable and tragic, in addition these activities could increase every year without control
until the human species induce the new mass
extinction. Obviously the earth has had five mass extinctions in its history, but the similar mass extinctions as currently are: Ordovician-Silurian and Cretaceous-Tertiary, due to melting of poles and annihilation of many species of animals and plants. Several solutions are proposed to avoid these problems but are there efficient solutions? and if people know the consequences about these problems and want to practice these solutions.
Keywords: mass extinction, pollution, environmental destruction.
“Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty (Albert Einstein). The earth has had five mass extinctions that happened by natural events. For example: the Ordovician-Silurian extinction occurred about 439 million years ago due to a drop in sea levels as a consequence the glaciers are melted, the Cretaceous-Tertiary extinction happened about 65 million years ago, the consequence was gradual climate change (International, 2011). But, currently
human species produced
the sixth mass extinction that will be massive,
catastrophic, and extensive. In addition the sixth mass extinction induced by humans is 100 to 1000 times faster than others and the worst of all, some consequences are irreversible it means several solutions just will reduce the impact of the consequences but do not finish it. Human
THE SIXTH MASS EXTINCTION 4
species are producing the sixth mass extinction in our planet 100 to 1 000 times faster than other mass extinctions that happened on earth. As a consequence, in twenty to thirty years we will not have the Amazonas region, north and south poles will melt completely, species in the oceans will disappear, water will be scarce, and other consequences related to environmental destruction and extinction of animals will happen(International,2011). These consequences have been produced by the human species as a result, the human species will be extinct in a few decades(Corporation,1994). The causes are: human-induced climate change, overpopulation, and environmental pollution (reforestation, burning of forests, trash in the oceans). As a consequence earth will lose a great number of species and humans will not have food and water to survive.
Human- induced climate change is due to the daily activities of the human species so in other words, human activities produce an excess of greenhouse gases; generally carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide. In fact, these gases behave like as greenhouse and catch heat from the sun, and as result temperature in earth increase, glaciers melt, several species die, and other catastrophic consequences(Fund,2016). In 1997 the industrialized countries met to establish the Kyoto Protocol about Climate Change. This agreement that would require the nations of the world to work together to tackle the causes of climate change. Kyoto Protocol become official law in 2005, is established a reduction less of 5% of carbon dioxide than in 1990 (emission of carbon dioxide was 20.878 million tons per year). As a consequence, in 2011 several countries of Europe reduced their emissions of carbon dioxide 14.9% less than their emissions in 1990, and some of this countries become to use other kinds transport as bicycles and other kind of fuel as biodiesel to reduce bad emissions. The Kyoto Protocol has had a good result, but the worst problem (carbon dioxide emissions) is caused by countries who did not sign the agreement. United Estates renounced this agreement in
THE SIXTH MASS EXTINCTION 5
2001 the causes was; the Kyoto Protocol will affect the economy of the country. China and India were not taken in consideration in 1990 for this agreement due to in this time carbon dioxide emissions of these countries was not meaningfully related to the other countries as the United Kingdom. Currently, China, India, and United Estates are the countries who emits more carbon dioxide in the world. For example: China in 2013 produced 11 000 million tons per year of Carbon Dioxide, that means 30% of the total production in the world, also the emissions by China could be duplicated in 2040, United States in 2013 emitted 5 800 million tons per year, India in 2013 emitted 2 600 million tons per year. In fact, these countries most help with climate change due to huge amounts of carbon dioxide emissions and related to the other countries, gas emissions from the other countries are short (Shutterstock & Daniels, n.d.).
Overpopulation in earth is a current problem because while human species growing in number then several consequences happening in the world, for example some ecosystems have been destroyed, several species of animals lost their habitat, currently places designated for agriculture are less than before, more people need energy every year and resources are not enough to satisfy all populations, and the worst problem is water in a few years become scarce as a result hunger and illness increase in the world. In fact, the problems and causes could be millions, but human species do not do something significant to avoid these problems. (International, 2011) If people think the solution for overpopulation is distribute to people around the world, is wrong. According to the specialist of ONU Gerhard Heilig, the abusive use of available resources and the destruction of nature can be avoided through the controlled expansion of cities. Some countries control population growing in different ways. Abortion(controversial topic) is legal in 54 countries and produces 53 million per year(International, 2011).
THE SIXTH MASS EXTINCTION 6
The number of population grows every year, and human species try to feed to all world in fact destroy many lands for agriculture and research methods for more efficient production process to satisfy
the necessity. As a consequence the human species continue increase every year.
Abortion is the worst way to reduce the overpopulation, due to a woman runs the risk of die. (Corporation, 1994)
Around of us have many ecosystems, but every ecosystem has a kind of contamination produced by human. For example; cities covered with smog, rivers overloaded by organic and inorganic trash, excess of illumination in countries and other contamination that is easy to find around us. In fact, the contamination has a bad impact in the world and as a one effect of sixth mass extinction(Fund, 2016). People in the world, mostly want to reduce contamination and make some solutions to reduce the environmental pollution. For example: reuse plastic in those houses, buy a car that does not emit an excess of gasses, does not abuse fertilizers, and other little actions that we can do to reduce pollution, could see insignificant, but if we teach these habits to other people the result will be very significant. People help to reduce the environmental pollution, but the greatest contaminants are the companies in the world, due to companies throw trash in the oceans, rivers ,and lands, pesticides and fertilizers, in addition the amounts that companies throw increase in the last 50 years, and air pollution comes mainly from power plants and cars .
In conclusion, we have a three big problems that help to development of the sixth mass extinction that has been happening in the world. Gas emissions are a problem that some countries help to avoid for example, Kyoto Protocol the idea is very good, but the major polluters did not sign the agreement or resign the agreement. In overpopulation the major idea that analysts
THE SIXTH MASS EXTINCTION 7
propose is build a controlled cities and other like as abortion, but while population increase human species destroy indiscriminately several ecosystems without a control and do not think about the future consequences that it brings. Environmental pollution that people help to reduce the contamination implementing good manners and habits, but big companies do not want to reduce environmental pollution due to actions to reduce its pollution will impact its economy. In fact, all of us are a part of these problems very day we contaminate in some ways but we do not matter nothing because we do not see the problem that we generate and the consequences. What do you think if you know that your grandsons will do not see a north and south poles and several species of animals, might the oceans will be enough contaminated and people cannot enjoy the oceans, will not has enough water to drink whatever they want.
