Jonathan Jaramillo L006 – 11 Portfolio letter I am Jonathan Jaramillo, I am from Ibarra, Ecuador. Actually I am cursing fourth semester in Yachay Tech, I am studying a lot of subjects of different areas, it means, subjects of different schools like differential equations, programing, geology, physics and statistics. All these form a complement to the general studies that students receive in Yachay. English teaching have been a great help because it give the students a lot of capacities to get better in our futures works developing skills like listening, writing, speaking and reading. The subject I like is biology, but I want to study biomedical engineering with the purpose to develop new technologies to improve the health of people. Leaving aside my pleasures, the objective of this portfolio is create a memories or recompilation of all my work in level six, it means, my progress along the time in English, for that reason this portfolio contents some essays in which each one has a little more difficult of previous essays, also these essays was written with the purpose of improve our abilities to write, organize and analyze different topics, developing our capacities in English. This course of level six was similar to the other previous courses in which the purpose was improve each days, but at the same time it means that all semesters we wrote essays, read texts and listened teachers and we repeat all these activities in all semesters for this reason think that was very boring. I hardly ever make different activities to learn English in different ways of essays, also I think that always students had to follow a patrol in essays to have great calcification and if we do not follow those patrols we lose the semester because always those essays had the majority ponderation of the course. Well, I do not blame the teachers for the ways they take to teach English, they only abide rules neither the system, rather all this is relative, depends how each one see and perceive the teaching of English, so in my personal opinion I think that all English was good because I started to learn English in this University since the level one “the


basic�, I remember that people who was in superior levels says us “donkeys of one� because we only knew the basics, I like the English in the beginning but with the pass of levels all was very monotone and boring. About all skills that I learned and improve this semester was pretty notorious specially in writing and speaking because how I says previously I always learn the same, like how to write a better essays and how to cite correctly, I learn some vocabulary but for myself. I remember that in one week we have the homework to write new vocabulary in a platform, and the next day the teacher chose a person of the course and that person had to say the learned words, it was very interesting, but the bad notice is that we only make that activity for one week, no more. Like the majority of time in the part of speaking we had to prepare a presentation after present an essay, I lost the scenic panic because we have already to 3 expositions and then my body and my brain got used to it. I would have like to practice more my speaking talking about other themes like wishes of people, more science and everyday things but all these in an improvised manner because in this ways people improve talking finding new ways to express ideas. Finally, all this time, around two years, learning English help me us to discover new people, new ideas, new thoughts and new world. English is one of the most important spoken language around the world and for me because it is a requirement to develop science in other countries. I will still improving my English the rest of my life with different activities that I considered right and facilitate my learning because I think that the finished of level six implicates the beginning of English learning, also I have the idea to take this language like a principal in my life. Technology applied in our life

All people each day increase the capacity to expand the knowledge around the world and increase the technology to satisfy the necessity of humanity. Nowadays technology take our live in the majority of aspects, it means in our daily life, for example our computers to make jobs in our kitchens , the good and all around us and this is good in different ways because technologies was created to help us in our work, schools and medicine, but other people, like Dr. Wimber in his study, say “The photographs reduce the intelligence”(2003), it means that the constant use of technology like our cellphones reduce our capacity to remember things and it make us less smart. Smartness is the capacity to solve any king of problems. So I think that technologies like internet, smartphones make us smarter. Technology allows us to access a lot of knowledge in only few seconds. According to Dr, Maria Wimber, she believes “The internet simply changes the way we handle and store information. So the Google Effect makes us good at remembering”. So this is good example to explain the concept of smartness because internet give us the capacity to find information, it means develop and improve the ability to think something or a problem and after that find the solutions to any problem. I that smartness, is not only the capacity to remember things and have a lot of knowledge, rather is our ability to make things and solve problems. I think that the part in which technologies form a part of our live in something natural in which we are involved, in fact in the future our minds could be replace with technology with technology that makes all for us. The “Google Effect” is not only a product of technology, it existed in the past. According to Genevieve Roberts “The Google Effect is a theory that says we have a kind of difficult to remember things by the fact that we will find the answer in the Internet with


only one click� (2015). I think this theory of Google Effect is true because each day we are making more dependent by technology and for this reason we forget things that we learn, but at the same time I do not agree with this theory because I think that is only a tool that we use to remember things, it means, is only a transition of technology that humanity takes, for example in the past people use books to save information and they access to those books to find information and in the case in which they did not remember some information they went again to find information. People always have investigated in mediums to remember things, the only fact in the present is that the capacity to remember things is worse than in the past because the technology makes it easier to find information, so the fact is that we create a model according to our capacities and opportunities. People are in a constant change and we cannot make anything to change the natural course of nature. Some people think that technology is the worst thing that happened us because it make us more stupid each day, but I think if we do not make anything to change the past we will always live in a state in which we not change, is the nature of the man find new way to change the world, in a better or less ways because all action that humanity makes, establish a point to develop of society and the world. So the technologies like Internet do not make us more stupid rather is a way that we use to increase our knowledges and make us more conscious about different situations around the world. In conclusion the internet, computers, smartphones and other kind of technologies are making us more intelligent because these allow us to access any kind of information that we can use to our benefit with the condition if we know where find information also it allow us to meet new things that we can use in our daily routine, Furthermore the people are in constant change to develop more technologies that help us to be better each days. So I think that the evolution of technology is natural process that humanity experiments

Response essay to Don't Buy The Hype, College Education Is Not An Investment Education is one way or sometimes even the only way that we choose to get money and find a job, economic support, a family and life, but in the real world education is not the only investment to earn something rather there are a lot of ways in which people can be successful around the Earth there are a lot of successful people that broke the ordinal system of education in which people go to school, after college and then get a job but at the same time there successful people that continue with studies all the time to be better each time. People like Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak contributed to create one of the most important company of computers and they were the pioneers in leave the university. Don't Buy The Hype, College Education is an article written by George Leef who says that the college is not a warranty to be successful and get a job in the future also the educational value of college is questionable (Leef, 2013). Education is very important but it does not warranty to get jobs. The article is about different points of view about how education could be very important but at the same time how education is not a good investment. Leef mentioned how different people have a different perspective about college and how this affect the future of this people and he says three principal examples about the college and if college education is a good investment. I agree with the author when he says that “College itself isn’t an investment, just one way of increasing your value.”(Leef, 2013).I think that he says the truth because the college will not guarantees the economic future of the people. The main idea of this topic is that people cannot trust in the college degree like warranty to save the future because college allows us to have a knowledge about the situations that we will deal in the future but college do not give us all abilities to solve problems in our work. Studies do not warranty the employed of people because the people who contract others do not pay for approved course rather for the abilities that people have. In


nowadays people preferred students think that university will be their situation this mean they think the university will guarantee their job and after that they will earn a lot of money but this is not in all true because people need to develop a certain of abilities to apply in the real world. Honestly I agree with the author because he spoke about critical and real points of view about college investment in which he spoke about people that make enough effort to be successful and people who do not make and improve the abilities to be successful in work and I think that this is correct because the majority of people can make anything with their lives to be successful and earn a lot of money and be millionaire. This idea is very relevant because this allow me to have several ideas about the “taboo� of education. Why taboo? Because people think education is the one way to be successful and this is true, but the majority of people with this though say that only careers that people study in University are very important and this generate and ideas of despise others like arts music cinema and dance. This is related with the main topic sentence because a students create the idea that “They will not be anyone successful if they do not begin in the university and they will be poor only if they make other activities like arts music cinema and dance. For example in Ecuador some parents do not let their son s to develop certain of abilities between art or science this mean that parents create a mentality in students that do not let them to understand the importance of all that students choose because any activities allow us to develop some of abilities but the idea of this is that parents do not believe in arts, the only important thing is college and nothing more. This is the reason because students prefer to go to college and finish a career in college, but in some cases people do not put all interest in study and after they do not get a job and after that they ask why the college do not help them if they study. But the truth is that they do not like the college and do not develop skills to affront the real world. In fact, in real world the


majority of bosses would prefer people that could explain things in which they are capable to make instead people that only prefer to trust in their title to obtain a job with that piece of paper. There are some possibilities in which students are involved like people that studied hard, others that do not have skills and others that leave the college to make others productive activities. The majority of people think that if we do not begin in the university will be unsuccessful because we will not make nothing for help society but I think that this is an error because can develop their own abilities to improve something to help the society. The author says there are three ways in which people are involved and these are the examples in which he explained the situation of people that go to college and people that do not go to the college. Those opinions are good for me because he explain how real are their position in a students that make students with good effort, also people who do not make a good effort and finally people who create their own business. I agree with the first instance because I think that people who makes a great effort to be successful in this life deserve a good recognition about all things that they make in their studies and their like, the majority of these people prefer to develop a certain of skills to be better each day and this is good because when they graduate at college they will be able to make a serial of things related with their job or their life, for these people the studies are very important the rest of their life because they find to be better with their selves and their make college a good investment to approach each second to gain experience to the future and be successful. Honestly I agree whit second point of view in which the author says that the people who do not study with effort and do not develop skills will not get a job because people that do not make an effort to learn something new that will benefit their selves will not enlarge their mentality to get something new. In general these kind of people go o classes


but they do not prefer to make an effort to study or learn new things only go to classes. Due their do not learn and develop skills in the future they pain the consequences because they think that with a tittle they will get a job in anywhere. For example, wealthy people think that they are reach they do not study and after that buy a title but they do not think that in real life they need abilities and a lot of experience to make a good work. These kind of people should to learn to study and value the studies, learn abilities and be prepared to the real situations that occur in real world. About third point of view of the author in which he says about people who leave the college but develop abilities to begin a nurture by themselves , also I am agree because we can use our abilities to create something that can help us or can help the society to be better or improve somethings that help others. This point of view is very relevance because it make a jump very distance in compared with the two others because here the people do not go to the college rather they prefer to make a venture in which they are able to make things to help or innovate in the society. One perfect example of this is the people who leaves the university to improve or create something that revolutionize the world like Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak who revolutionized the world with their inventions about computation, but some importance in this point of view is that people not only should leave the college rather they need to develop a certain of skills to apply in life. Studies also allow people to have some abilities and knowledge and this is very important to have a critical mind and this is the beginning to have criterion about what abilities we want to learn. Throughout all this writing I have spoken about people need to develop skills to be successful in a job but is important to recognized that studies also is a process in which we are learning new things each days and education allow us to create and form a mind to criticize all that around us, education also let us to have knowledge about things that occur in the world. All education form our mind as we grow and this is


important to have choices about what we want to do with our lives, in this case education let us to have the base to form any kind of knowledge it means whit education we can learn all different things that schools teach us but we can make a choose about what we want in life if we want to study hard to be a great professional or not study but use the skills in which people are better and help others. I agree with that Leef manifest. All things that he says are correct because he does not criticizes the thoughts that other have about education rather he exposed several opinions that he has about advantages and disadvantages that college has. I like the ideas that Leef says because it motivates me to understand that college is very important to create a critical thought about things that around me, I think that we can make any kind of things to be successful but at the same time education is very important in life. In conclusion, college education does not warranty the successful in work, there are a lot of possibilities and a lot of things that we can make to be successful but it should be emphasized education is an important factor to learn about a lot of things that people find around the world. There are a lot of ways in which people are involved like people who go to the college and make a great effort to be better each day, those people acquire new abilities and get a god job, other people that do not make nothing in the university and they have difficulties to get job and do not be successful and the other people who leave the college but apply their abilities in somethings to improve those things and be successful. So we will make a lot of things with our life to be successful and get a job and is very important to study because studies allow us to expand our knowledges.

The last opportunity What would you do if you had only one night of life? (Bradbury, 1951). The last night of the world is a story in which there are two people who discuss about one dream and how this could be related with real life. The author of his story tries to express one idea of a lot of ideas about the end of the world and this author also tries to explain very relevant aspects like love, life and fear. The principal theme in this story is uncertainty and Bradbury use these literary elements to demonstrate his theme: Conflict, imagery and plot. The conflict between two or more people is that they do not have a critical thought, In this story, the author express conflict because he says that one character of the story has a dream, and other character have the same dream, after that the majority of people in the story have the same dream, but they do not know if that dream is true. I think that this is true, because the majority of people in the story express an idea to the end of the world and they say that this dream is true, but at the same time they do not know the true, they only accept it because some kind of people have the same dream. Honestly I think that those people did not know anything because they did not have things to support that they said, this is the reason because there is a conflict in the story that do not allow the characters to know the truth about their destiny and this is uncertainty about things that could happened. Imagery in story allows me to understand the different feelings that the author want to express through the characters. In the story the author talk about different things like feelings that express the characters between them. For example in the story he author says that the characters express their love in the las minute like “Good night” “dear….”. (Bradbury 1952, page 6).Honestly, in the last part I can interpret those feelings because the author has the capacity to transmit the ideas and thoughts, but at the same time it


makes me understand that the characters only accept their destiny and feel fear at the last minute of their lives like all humanity in the world. It is much related with uncertainty because they have an idea about the end and express all feelings in the las day but they make those actions because they think that it is the last minute but it could not be for them. This kind of story exist in a lot of parts rather it means that there are a lot of stories that talk about the end of the world. The plot of the story is how a dream that all have, could make the majority of people believe that is the end of the world. This have a plot in which author explain several things for example how two people understand that one day in which they are drinking coffee could be the end of the world because one of them have a dream and after that everyone that the character know have the same dream. (Bradbury, 1951). In conclusion the author tries to express several themes, but I think that the principal is uncertainty with his story because he speaks about the end of the world and how people in this story express their feelings about it. The author uses some literary elements in the story like conflict, imagery and his plot about characters and their feelings. The author tries to explain that contain several things of fantasy, I do not think that his story could have happened in real life. So, that is only a story that allows us to understand and practice very well the literary elements.

Interpretation Essay to “The Garden of Earthly Delights� Hell is not an option because we all are going to pass by there. The author of this painting was Bosch, a Dutch painter who gain a great recognized fame in the period of 1450 and 1516, all this because he had an extraordinary capacity to invent and create a lot of figures (Biography, 2016). Some of the few works that he has, have different thematic, but all have a common point and these are themes related with religion like born, death, God, spirits, paradise, hell and others. The most important paintings are The Last Judgment, The Hay Way, The Seven Deadly Sins and the Four Last Things and finally the Garden of Earthly Delights (Biography, 2016). The philosophy of Bosch tells us that the salvation of the soul after sinning is only possible through suffering and as a consequence most mortals have as destiny an eternal damnation (Herranz, 2013, p.1). Then we can say that the works of Bosch always show us that punishment because of the bad actions. This painting gives us to understand that humanity must take into account the actions they take each day as these will greatly affect the future that we expect. We begin by interpreting this painting from a global perspective; That is to say that it affects the whole planet, as a problem with regard to global warming. The work of Bosch, "The Garden of Delights", is a triptych that shows in a first panel a virgin nature where plants and animals are not affected by the hand of man, this is a time approximately before the boom of the industrial revolution in the year 1770. Then a second panel represents the high consumption of man from the earth's resources. For example, oil exploitation and deforestation. With these actions it is expected that the planet will have other problems in the future. Finally, in the last panel, humanity is condemned for its own actions because there are no longer resources to survive and the planet is dying. If we see


our current generation, we are on the second panel and we know perfectly well where we are headed by the actions we are taking. The second interpretation is much related with the idea of Christianism. The first panel represent the garden of eternity in which God created a man in his image and after that created a woman from the man, this panel is very important because it means the life and connivance in peace between human and the environment, but after that occur the sin in which the humanity betray the confidence that God gave us. The second panel of the painting represents an opportunity that god give the humanity to reconsider the foul that humanity make in the paradise, but this is impossible because the garden is a place in which humanity are involved in a lot of temptations. The third panel of this painting try to represent the hell in which we are destiny, this part is very dismal because shows how the humanity will suffer for the eternity, also represent the suffering in different ways, for example there are tortures in which people are used like musical instruments, others are involved is catastrophic situation in which they are devoured by other beasts and others. So this painting represent the history of religion like we know and how we believe. The last interpretation of this painting is that, it represents the evolution of humanity in the world and Universe. The majority of people tends to see the painting from left to right, but if we observe in the opposite direction we have other point of view in we can see first the hell, after that the garden and finally the heaven. So in the first panel in which we can see the hell, we interpret this part like the beginning of the humanity in the sense of evolution, it means, at the beginning humans were not civilized, they did not know nothing that we know in nowadays, a period in which they are in chaos with the only objective to find food, survive and have a lot of offspring. Then the central panel of the painting, represents all achievements that humanity have created from the past to the present either good or bad for us. For example, people created tools that allow


them to satisfy their necessities and improve some technologies to facilitate the work, not only for work, now our technology get moving very fast to create more and more technologies to help us to make different activities. The central panel also represent our present in which we are involved, it means, social problems, also the principal mean of this part shows us that we remain being beasts that think we are better than others species in the Earth that only find pleasures to satisfy our morbid wishes, be greedy and find more. For two parts it could be good or bad for humanity, because is our nature find more to our development but if we do not make in the correct way we could found our own destruction. The third panel of the painting represent the maximum point of humanity expression in the way of evolution, it means that the humanity reached a state in which they perfects because they develop all necessary tools that allow them to know all mysteries around the Universe, so with this they become in superior beings, being considered gods of all around us forms that they were once. In conclusion, we can interpret the painting of Bosch, “The Garden of Delightsâ€?, from different perspectives. We can represent painting as a problem with regard to global warming and man's consumerism towards earth´s resources. On the other hand, we see this painting as religious iconography clearly visible in each of the panels. Also, we associate this painting as the evolution of man from a precarious state without any knowledge to a different state led basically to perfection. In this painting, Bosch tries to suggest to viewers that The good future is not marked by the good actions that we do, rather the correct way that we take each day trying to meet our needs. This allow us know several perspective about ideologies and how we adapt to determinate systems.

Education as a model around the world. Imagine a place in which education could be the best answer to get out of a country in which the education is poor, you cannot make investigation and all days you are obliged to make things that you do not want to make, so the solution is the education of Finland. According to PISA test around the world, Finland is located in the top 10 of the best education, especially in areas of language and math’s, all this because they have another methodology to teach in schools and home. (2011). For example the education is personalized in which teachers respect the pace of learning of students, also students have time to make all because the teaching days are shorter than other places of education and other important fact is that they do not study to compete rather they work in a collaborative way. Also Finland have improved in the literacy science during the time because the society and families give a great importance the theme of teaching and give the confidence to the teachers to make all necessary to change the life of students. The principal idea is about how is the teaching in Finland and how it has allow to have an incredible development in knowledge and technology on the country and how it has served as a model in other countries to improve themselves, further the Finland model education applied in our country and their influence in our future generations. Finland model education is one of the best around the world due to the innovator and different method to teach in schools. Finland have created an education in which all people are including, since the little students until the adult people, all this have allow create inclusion around this country also better transmission of the knowledge. According to Lea Pulkkinen one of the best pillars to reach this good education was the education starts at seven years because the authorities of schools think that the education in home


and care of the children in their first years are very important to the future, further the education in Finland begins at seven years because they says since the point of brain development the age of seven years is the correct age to begin the learning. (2012). I think this is correct because we have the obligation to teach our children in a correct way, it means, teach them how is the world, the values, the rules of society and help them with any king of questions that they could have, is very important to give the children the capacity to make questions about all that around them because in the future they will become in people who analyze a problem in different ways and it helps them to find correct solutions. Furthermore, I think that one the best pillars to make this education not only was the attention in education rather the union of other kind of institutes and the collaboration of that society, it means, the helps of schools, government, inversions and the service of health, a good combination of all these factors contribute to create a good environment not only for students and children instead all people in that country, all this allow to give the same opportunities of development. According to Lea Pulkkinen in Finland is very important the theme of health because they are interesting in the formation of the child since they are in the belly of mom, they propose a lot of alternatives to the care of babe and mother, also when start the education of the children, in schools there exists nurses that helps with health of the children, also Finland was the first country to begin to serve free food in schools. (2012). I think that all these services like health attention, freedom and good feeding should be within reach of all and the governments should make all necessary to accomplish this factors to create a good inclusion and society. We should adopt this model because it would help us to improve the education of our country and in consequence of this, the valor of good society that have different knowledge and develop of new technologies. The education in Finland has a lot of


advantages regarding to relation with students, teachers and parents because the parents are with their sons the majority of time and this let the children develop more abilities to socialized with their environment, I think that we would give more importance the theme of family due to the family play roll very important in development of the children and our country not only should make emphasis in the education because the social problems also are involved in life and makes us take decisions depending our situation. For example a child who lost his father in a divorce has other kind of trends, it means, the child could be more depressive, develop attitude that do not allows him to have a good relation with others. According to Lea Pulkkinen the investigation shows that when parents have dinners with their sons sometimes in the week helps the children to have a better vocabulary and successful in schools. I think that government in Ecuador should promote activities in which parents are involved with their sons in a lot of activities, not only in home, rather in schools, because this allow the children to have better development in academy and social ambit. According to Donald Clark the education in Finland is not good because their principal argument is that this country only pay attention to education and do not is focused in social problems, and also clear out with statistics that this country have a lot of problems in schools in social ambit, for example still exist rape and harassment in schools. I think this article attack in a strong way the education in Finland because it says that Finland is not in the first place of the best education but is in the top ten of the best education around the world, also I think the majority of countries have problems like rape or harassment but at least Finland has tried to avoid these faults because since 2011 they implemented a program called Kiva Koulu to avoid problems in schools and social life. This country is not perfect but it tries to be better each year implementing new strategies to improve not only studies and technologies also improve the life of people who lives in that a place.


Ecuador is a country that tries to improve the education because one of the principal ideas of this country is that the education is the only way to improve like society we are, but there exists some mistakes that we could change with new reforms. Along the time our country have tried to build a better education system and it done it, but like always have some mistakes that do not allow to be better each days, I think that one problem of our country is that we always find competition, it means, that we always have to be better than others and it will be better for us, but I think that we should implement an education in which since the beginning we foment the equality and equity and the help for others in which all could have the same opportunities to progress. Also other problem very related with the other is that in our country the education evaluate the works that we make and sincerely I disagree because the majority of times it represents that we the majority of times work to obtain a grade or a price but we do not work for acquire new knowledge or help others. For example, students of universities, only studies for time to exam and after that they forget all learned because they only are focused in pass the semester, also the theme of grades affect very much some students, because it implicates a lot of things, it means, if a student obtain a bad grade in the majority of cases they generate anguish, stress and affair because that grade could means the loss of semester and it implicates other things like loss money and time, other defect is that a lot of people and students think that grades represent their intelligent and that is not like that. In Finland, the education is different to this country because they do not have lessons that measure their intelligent they only works in their projects and the evaluation is the progress that they have all days, also they are educated not with the purpose of created a competition, rather they foment the fellowship and the help to create a better society together. Other defect of this country and not only this rather other countries is that the


education in schools and university foment the science, this is good, but not when this is the majority that foments, it means, the other areas like music, dance, cinema and others are displaced and their relevance in the society is less importance, the schools teach the science in the first instance and arts in second. I think this is wrong because it generates a belief that arts are bad or less important and also this kind of education do not give us the opportunities to develop our maximum potential, because not all are good to make science or art. Finland with their education system develop different areas in schools giving importance all subjects, and this is interesting, because not only are focused in science or art rather they focused in others like programing, carpentry or even cook. We could learn about this society and take some of those ideas to improve our education and society to be better each day. In conclusion, Finland have stablished a society based in good education because it helps them to reach improvement of the society and this has served as model to follow in other countries and our country also should prove this method to enhance the education and society. Finland have developed an education system very good that changed a lot of aspects like relationship, education, science and culture. We like a country could implement that model to change mistakes that we are making in our daily lives, Ecuador is a country that offer a lot of opportunities to progress the change to improve ourselves, but at the same time we need to take consciousness about things either good or bad that happened surround us and in base to the observations that we make to our environment make good decisions to improve our environment, technology, relations and society.
