Dear Portfolio Reader,

Before all, I need to communicate you a little secret: I am really bad when I try to express and write my ideas and feelings in a paper and even more in English, but I will make my better effort for you, my appreciated reader. The world is a gorgeous place where you can surprise yourself in each second. What is your world? Are there borderlines in it? or Is it an infinity place? For a long time I thought that only my family, school life, books and my pets were my world, but after five semesters in Yachay Tech University1 my perception has changed. I have realized that there are a lot of amazing things that many people do not notice, and knowing other languages (in my case English) allow you to cross your borders. In my case, I discovered to some of my best heroes in science: Tesla2, Turing3, Avogadro4, Schrödinger5, Musk6, etc. The problem was that I never heard about them in my school; it was a big mistake in my first steps in my second home. When I began my school life, I just wanted to meet great heroes or built crazy things (e.g. the gravity’s clock). However the school life really 1 A nascent university in Ibarra - Ecuador. 2 The man who changed the world with electricity. 3 The father of this device (computer o cell phone). 4 Remember: The Avogadro’s number (6.022^23) is an enormous amount of whatever thing. 5 No one knows if her cat is dead or alive. 6 He is an Terrestrial Martian.

disappointed me because it was not what I expected. My childhood motivation disappeared with time and a lot of boring subjects. Never let your motivation alone, it is the most faithful companion for achieving your goals. Now, I want to introduce you one quote of my ordinary differential equation teacher Antonio Acosta, he said me: “If you work hard in something you will make it good, but if you work passionately you will be happy.” It explains why I used to have good grades in my middle and high school English class, but after all those years I could not improve my English skills. The main reason is that I did not have any kind of motivation, consequently I used to forget everything about English in a short time. The main problem with learn English or whatever subject in elementary school was that I didn’t know how it works. Rules, rules and more rules, and exams for obtaining a grade that describe my works. My English teachers in school should had begun their English classes with interesting information, for example: “The major part of information is writing in English; science, music, movies, games even jobs”. I think my school teachers could show me a more amazing english world. Nowadays, I can find a lot of new things and emotions learning english, and knowing different points of view related with a new language excite me. If you don’t believe in my words you can convince yourself with musical band like “Radiohead” or “Lifehouse”, maybe you can read amazing books like “Why we can’t wait” by Martin Luther King, Jr. or discover unique and crazy experiments in channels like “colinfurze” or “CrazyRussianHacker”. I show you a little piece of my English world, and I hope you also share your experiences with your friends or family; maybe someone around you miss out on great things for not knowing that they exist. The following portfolio contains other examples of interesting things that I learned this semester (2016- 2017) . Thank you for reading my letter, José Serquive

Response Essay

Intelligent Artificial Now and Tomorrow and Their Possible Implication in the Future JosĂŠ Seraquive Yachay University of Experimental Technological Research

Intelligent Artificial Now and Tomorrow and Their Possible Implication in the Future “Artificial Intelligent” is a paper written by Patrick Lin, Keith Abney & George

Bekey. The authors present trouble about the growing technology and the issues that it could carry in the future. Also, the paper describes the relationship between human and robots as truly dangerous in several scenarios where ethics and responsibilities don’t have a clear owner. The intention of the paper is generate a positive debate about the incoming robotics revolution, and it is supporting in three main pillars: “what is a robot”, “robots today and tomorrow” and “ethics and social issues”.

«Bill Gates recently observed that “ the emergence of the robotics industry [...] is developing in much the same way that the computer business did 30 years ago”» (Intelligent Artificial, pg.1). The are many ways to judge the current technologies as: Internet, virtual reality or social networking, nevertheless their relationship with the real world is unclear. For example computers generated: cyberbullying, spread of pornography, illegal traffic or addiction to social network. These are some examples of social problems produced by the technology and computer business. Now, what will wait about the robotic industry? What is a robot? Robots are machines that sense, think and act in the real world. If a machine wants to be autonomous, then they need to take information of their environment to interact with it. Robots are more than toys under control, they are capable to take decision and act upon different conditions. So, we can make a differentiation about robots and different technologies as: computers, smart-phones or operating systems. Now, we know a possible definition, but we do not know specifically what a robot will become after several years. It is not easy to find an answer to this question because there are still many other things to discuss about it, for example: If a machine will have free will, is it different of a human?

Robots today and tomorrow Machines can replace all works of people, at least those jobs that are dangerous, dull or dirty. Machines don’t have emotions, feel tired or pain. Besides, they can work all the time making repetitive assembling. Even more they can arrive to inaccessible places where people surely will die such as the ocean floor or surface of Mars. In some countries such as Japan robots have been replacing the human work in the last century (1 of 25 workers in Japan is a robot). They complete jobs like elderly-care or help in medicine. Robot’s market has grown in the last years, then we find robots like: Roxxxy or Predador available for different works; personal care and companions and national security respectively. Ethical and social issues The second revolution of machines is incoming and with it a revolution of moral and ethics issues. There are three main parts to discus in this paragraph. Safety and errors.- Any person is not except to commit an error, therefore a machine is not the exception. Consequently, today we have a large history of robot’s tragic accidents under the responsibility of people, but in the future if robots have more responsibility than a human, then how can we judge a machine if it falls or breaks the law? Law and ethics.- Norms and Laws around the world are different and confuses. Then, there is a deepness in how we will apply international standards to robots. For example, meanwhile USA justifies the robot Predator's attacks in Pakistan as legal acts, other countries disagree. So, USA tries to find security for their nation through drones. Social impact.- Robots are better than humans in almost everything, i.e. they do not feel fatigue, sleep and emotions. For this reason the main problem in the future will be lost of jobs as a consequence of an automated world where machines might control our daily life.

What is a robot? the paper tries to answer this question progressively through all the document, specifically it makes one difference between the concept: robots today and tomorrow, improving our critical thinking about the future. The first definition shows in the text was: “A computer with sensors and actuators that allow it to interact with the external world”. Consequently they generate a debate about ethics and social issues that robots will generate in the future. In general, I coincide with their points of view about the near future with robots and their effects along the paper. For example: First, in the introduction there is a debate about the correct definition of the word “robot”, after a clear explanation about the terminology they obtain as a result: “A robot has the capacity to operate in the real-world environment without any form of external control”. (Intelligent Artificial pg.1). Second, in the first second part called “Robots Today and Tomorrow” the authors support the different ways that machines will replace the human work, also present the most advances robot’s function until today from having sex (replacing sexual partners) to teach any subject. In addition, the authors give us a widespread view related with the use of machines, to illustrated: robots with biologically based, integration man-machine (cyborgs and patients with artificial body parts ), creation of A.I., etc. I consider that indirectly the paper questions us: “When might we consider robots as machine with thinking?” , “Someday will robots have the same relevance that a human?” Questions remain in our head without answers. Third, the last point in the essay is complex (ethical and social issues) because it touches many debatable points. “Safety and errors ”,“Laws and ethics”, “Social Impact” contemplate different scenarios where point out a society with losses instead of earning. I agree with the three points to cover in this paragraph. But, I want to highlight that the robot’s ethicals and social issues incoming will be produced by the own hand’s humanity. Consequently, there are questions: Is impossible to judge a machine by their actions? Even if

it is the most advanced A.I. Who will be punished if a machine fail? To summarize robots are a complex human creation, they have a clear differentiation of other devices because they can sense, think and act with own autonomy, also they are capable to relate with the environment, even more making own decision. Robots can make almost every task better than people in the world. According with the last part we have benefits of robots work for labor services, military industry, medicine until personal care and companions. To clarify, we should make a comparison with the Internet development in the last years and robot industry, therefore is logical to think in negative and dangerous effects (as we see in the first part). We will have the moral responsibility to assume all consequences, not as a person or group but rather like society.

Literary Analysis

The story of an Hour JosĂŠ Luis. Seraquive Yachay University of Experimental Technological Research

The Story of an Hour

“The story of an hour” is a story wrote by Katya Chopin. She introduce us a women called Mrs. Louis Mallard with heart trouble, in the story She is the main character and she has the mission to discover a new meaning of life without her husband. The author present us an analogy between the Louis’s heart problems and the repression of all women in the XVII century. Also, hers heart problem is a symbol of irony in her life. For explains it in a better way I will support my thesis statements in three main points: The position of women inside the society in the last centuries, the “joy” that kills until today in the society, and why the author mentions the heart trouble in the first paragraph. Some limits that all women had in the last years are related with the stupid domination by men. Before, in a marriage the husband would has all the possession of the couple, then it even meant the human rights of his wife. In the case that the head of the house died then his wife will obtain all the possession even her freedom. The author involves all the history around it, in consequence the feelings of Louis has sense (She just want to live in freedom for the rest of her life) in the development of the history. Another point to notices in the development of main character’s emotions is that Louis cried of happiness when she found out her husband’s dead, thereby the author can suggest domestic violence in this point. Through years years women had been undervalue because they are consider the weak gender, for example: The plagiarism of Marie Curie’s research and the late arrive of women vote. The phrase “The joy that kills” has different meaning inside the lecture, then I can relate it with emotions that Louis experiment through the develop of the story. Also, I can say that the phrase is ironic because at the end she died to say her husband alive. She was so happy after image her new freedom life, she said “Free! Body and soul free!” and the author

said that “she was drinking an elixir of life through that open window”. But the life surprisingly always finds a way to get rid of dreams of people. The last part is related with the Louis’s heart problems, the first paragraph in the lecture define the heart problems like a medical issue, but after read all the lecture I consider that it is a consequence of a constant psychological oppression. In other words is a symbol that all women suffer even nowadays, a psychological abuse by his partner. For example, several years ago women would not have access to medical supplies or medical treatments without husband’s authorizations. “The Story of an hour” is a memory of all women that try to change their situations of life looking to have the same rights as men. In conclusion the lecture has a symbolic message behind the story. First, it shows us the inequality in the past centuries (XVII) where all events spin around men, then the machismo is a commonly theme. Second, the lesson of the life about freedom and the cruel reality, in other words the main character learn the most hard lesson of life a fake happiness. Third, the life is a constant fight for all people, women, men, children, and old people, then all of us might do our best effort to life.

The Mind Of A Schizophrenic Person JosĂŠ Seraquive Yachay University of Experimental Technological Research

The Mind Of A Schizophrenic Person

Figure 1: Draw by Schizophrenic person (Anonymous). Many times schizophrenic people seem to have deep and interesting thoughts, but it is difficult to interact and understand them. For this reason, this kind of people many times are ignored by the society. Years ago, in a sanatorium was found an interesting painting made by a patient with schizophrenia; and by analyzing it, we can comprehend a little the mind of a schizophrenic. This painting transmits the constant and painful fight inside the mind of a schizophrenic person. The author painted a body with two heads fighting each other, which represents that schizophrenic people have different personalities. Also, the body looks haggard showing that this combat causes serious injuries in these people. According to Mental Health America (2016), “Schizophrenia is a serious disorder which affects how a person thinks, feels and acts. People with this disease have usually problems to distinguish what is real and what is imaginary, and they cannot develop socially in a normal way. Contrary to common thinking, the majority of people with schizophrenia are not violent. Even the causes of schizophrenia are unclear, three are the most popular hypothesis that explain the causes of schizophrenia. These are: genetics abnormalities in the brain’s chemistry or structure, possible viral infections and immune disorders, and the environment. Statistics from U.S. found that around the 1% of the population of this country has schizophrenia (NIMH, 2016).

The people’s behavior with schizophrenia depends on the level of developing of the mental disorder; for example in some cases they may sit for hours without moving or talking, others can even talk about visions. The most common symptoms behind schizophrenic people are hallucinations , it means that they have sensorial experiences, and it can occur in any of the five senses. Thus, they see people or objects that are not there, smelling odors that no one else detects, and feeling things like invisible fingers touching their bodies when no one is near. As a consequence of the behavior described in the last paragraph, the painting looks like a human being without ears, then we can deduce that the author of the painting maybe can’t hear to his hallucination. In contrast and according to the sensations produced by mental disorder, the author incorporated three main senses on the painting: touch, taste and sight. Two heads and arms around his body, the tongue in the right head and the exorbitant eyes suggest some of his hallucinations. The injuries of the picture represents the damage that schizophrenia causes on people. It is very clear that the picture shows an injured body because one hand is pulling part of skin from the other head. Additionally, the other hand is strangling the neck. It is a clear representation of the painful problems that are caused by the mental disorders of schizophrenia. Mostly, these issues are social or psychological. The strange behavior of some kind of schizophrenics is negative for social relations, because it causes that friends and relatives get away from the schizophrenic. It means that people with schizophrenia suffer a serious problem that is isolation. Another problem of schizophrenics is that they usually cannot differentiate real things from unreal things. They lose this capacity because of constant hallucinations. It is very dangerous because it can drive somebody to madness. These are just few problems that people with schizophrenia to face. This situation is very painful. It is the grief that this painting is showing.

In conclusion, every element of the painting represents a part of the world of schizophrenics. The author painted: skin, eyes and a tongue that are related with senses. It shows the many hallucinations that schizophrenics suffer. These different hallucinations cause different personalities. Another important element of the painting is the fight and the injuries. These elements represent the painful problems that schizophrenics have in their lives.

Argumentation Essay

A Universal Language JosĂŠ Seraquive Yachay University of Experimental Technological Research

A Universal Language

According to the page web “Science” the author Collen Cancio said “Every language that has ever existedd is just a modification of something before it ” The spreading of knowledge is the strongest reason to have a universal language. Any person of any country should have access to all information in the world about any topic. The consequence of it are very significant, one of them is getting a better education system. Countries with more technologies and more educational tools have the opportunity to share their education methodology to countries with lack of appropriate education system. Another benefit could be the people's job opportunities like a consequence of a common language. If the major of people has a common language is easiest get a job. For example, academic tools like Academia.com or Coursera.com are page web that offer different courses in the most relevant languages. It clearly that not all people could follow some of this courses due to the language. Communication is a fundamental part of societies according to Cancio in his article he tell us a story of the Bible where people work together to built a higher tower as a symbol of human power. This history could be false or not, but when any nation has a better communication, it works better. Presidents of different countries could make better covenants for the benefit of people. people from different parts of the world should not need to depend on someone (translators) to expand their productions. Some people could say that one universal language could not help in education and spread knowledge because in a major part of the world the education is private and cost. It is a truth fact, but we need to consider that always there are free educational tools available on the Internet. The main idea behind the educational tools is that all of there should be in a common language for everybody.

In conclusion, one universal language has more benefits inside a society for reasons like the development of people in education and communication; it should allow that any person can have access to better job opportunities according to their abilities in any part of the world. Nations with better communication should work better in order to increase the economy and people's lifestyle

Ethics In Human Intercourse With Intelligent Artificial In A Near Future. JosĂŠ L. Seraquive Yachay University of Experimental Technological Research

Abstract The paper explores one of the most criticized themes until today related to the growing technologies. To be more specific, the growing technologies will converge to develop a sex robotic partner. In this paper points in favor of the construction of a robotic sexual partner are presented; some of the most representative impacts that will have this new technology are social benefits. To understand this goal, three main ideas are developed in the paper, which helps us to understand the idea of integrating robots into human life: we need to understand how the implementation of feelings in a robot is fundamental for builting connection (empathize) with people, the benefits of sexual robots in the society (instead of human sex workers) and possible trouble with the implementation in our day to day. Keywords: sex, robots, emotions, intercourse, awareness

Ethics In Human Intercourse With Intelligent Artificial In A Near Future

“Robotic love will work, but only because we are so bad at finding a more true love.” − Sullins

Technology and globalization have the potential to improve or worsen our lifestyle in society. If we look back, technology had transformed our point of view about social problems: Internet addiction, especially to online gaming and pornography (continues to ruin real lives), social networking, cyberbullying, etc. Technology always has been involved in ethics and social issues, in consequence, we might think that in a near future we will face new ethics and social issues about next technologies. In the coming years, one of these problems will come with the development of robots with artificial intelligence; to be more specific, we will be to build robots with the capacity and purpose of maintaining a human emotional relationship. Nowadays the exponential development of new technologies and their application in our life will allow us to create a potential couple through robotic and programming. In addition, the transition of people to this new era of robotics will be very fast and almost without changes due to the interaction already formed with machines (smartphones and computers). The direct consequence of technological advances in artificial intelligence (AI) will allow us to produce sexual partners for people (female and male). This fact means that: relationships, emotions, love, even more, sex will acquire a new meaning inside a society, contrasting with our current beliefs. In order to understand the ethics and social implications incoming this essay will focus on three main points: robots that imitate emotions and feelings like human, robots and sex with humans and issues of sex robots. First of all, we need to consider some information. In the report “Future of sex” written by Dr Ian Pearson, he talked about the role that robots will take in our lives as early as 2025. He believes that human intercourse with robots instead of humans will be common by 2025. Also, according to the study by 2030 relations between humans and robots will be

common as viewing adult films on the Internet now. By 2035 most of us will have toys (robots) that will interact with virtual reality. Dr. Pearson also believes that intimate robot relations will overtake relations over humans by 2050. If the future that awaits us is according to D. Pearson we must understand the implications that the future brings, therefore knowing about new technologies now will allow us to make better decisions today to improve the future. There are many relevant factors about a sexual and emotional life with robots and their social and ethical impact within society (Orton, 2015). In relation to the feelings and emotions of robots, Sullins (2012) said: “David Levy has provocatively argued that there is nothing about human love and sex that could not be engineered into a suitably designed robot in the relatively near future (p.1). The principal design strategy for robot-human interaction is to work toward a complete integration of robots with their user and environment. The future programmers will make robots to mimic and manipulate human emotions to evoke loving or amorous reactions from their human users. However emotions are the strongest feeling within human behavior, and they are ambiguous and abstract feelings to understand. For this reason, the techniques of effective calculation follow in great strides developing better techniques that simulate the emotions. Sullins thinks that once a robot's adaptation be almost perfect to society, then a robot will develop social and psychological tendencies so real that they will look human. The adaptation of robots inside the society will be as reported by Sullins "Robotic love will work, but only because we are so bad at finding a more true love. As an illustration, there are movies like ex-robot, I, Robot, and Bicentennial man that represents the human emotions and robot interaction. For this reason, it is possible to think that maintaining a sentimental relationship with robots is not a very distant idea in the future. Taking into account the previous information, we need to consider that robot relationships for some people could be cataloged simply as the use of a "sex toy" or pay for

the "sex toy"; in other words escorts. This is known as “the world’s oldest profession”, and is one that continually attracts controversy because of the ethical issues involved in selling sex. There are arguments such as prostitution harms women, exploits women, spreads sexual diseases, leads an increase in organized crime, spread drugs problems. In contrast, robots that will built to sexual purposes will bring with them more benefits than sex-human workers nowadays. The most direct benefits of the sex bots are: robots will help prevent human trafficking (human sexworkers), reduce sexually transmitted diseases, and avoid unwanted pregnancies. First, a consequence of sexbots workers is that they will reduce the overexploitation that women and girls suffers who are mostly forced to work in this sector (The direct consequence of Moore's law tells us that each two years technology's prices suffer a reduction because always there are better and new technologies in developing),in addition, if prostitution is banned through the relevant agencies and technologies (sexbot) reduce their price, it is possible to think of a drastic reduction of people involved in this business. Second, the most significant health benefit for the clients who pay a sexbot instead of a sex worker is that “they can assure themselves of freedom of infection of sexually transmitted diseases. The sexual hygiene of a robot could and should be undertaken by the clients” according to Levy (p.3). Third, the pregnancy rate will be drastically reduced because the sexual instincts will be diminished with a sexual robot partner. There are a lot of issues to take into account about the robot development in the future. Then we need to consider that the study of robotics has taken a new dimension, so the Artificial Consciousness (AC) is a research concerned with “The study and creation of artifacts which have mental characteristics typically associated with consciousness such as (self-)awareness, emotion, affect, phenomenal states, imagination, etc” (Levy, p.5). A robotic sex partner could be used for activities that people can not or do not want to engage with other people, the path of socialization disappears and human interaction will be reduced. Then one day robots will

have more awareness than the people around us; the development of Artificial Consciousness is a clear example of this. Robots does not age and does not consume various resources; theirs behavior could be shaped and there is the possibility of variety. According to Levy a robot could change both emotionally and physically a lot, which would be like having different persons in one. On the contrary, some people against robot-human relationship consider an offensive acts to keep a human-robotic intercourse because this idea contrasts with their believers. In those cases, factors like religions and traditions are strong among elderly. The campaign (CASS) argued that the development of sexual robots will only increase the production of prostitution in cities; consequently, women and children will be perceived with inferiority. Even more, the developed of sex robots will reduce the human empathy that can be only development by an experience of mutual relationship. Another opposite viewpoint is people warn about the harm to the individual user that could suffer concerning this kind of relationship. Gutiu (2012) argued that the harm to the user will be “caused by repeat exposure to a dehumanizing form of sex and intimacy. Negative effects include seclusion from society, stunted emotional development, and an inability to compromise or handle rejection. A person’s need for sex with a robot could suggest a sign of physical and emotional withdrawal from efforts to connect intimately with humans. The interaction with machines can suggest asocial habits of users as well as their lack of will to overcome personal and social challenges. Some of the opposition's claims may be valid, but traditions like religious and cultural belief have been overrated and questioned in the last century due to the develop of new technologies and researches. The idea of sex robots contrasts with those traditions because sex robots will be able to increase the number of happy people about their sex life, and this fact breaks with some ideas of self-respect in most of the beliefs (Scouts, 2016). Taking

account this information is necessary emphasized in that people prefers to relate with a robot because for some reason they do not feel able to relate to a human partner. For example, physical disabilities, health problems and even lack of trust in individuals are qualities to highlight and those are motives that may encourage people to isolate themselves to others. Nevertheless, is possible to imagine that sex robots may have the potential to help reintegrate asocial individuals, by providing a safe environment for users to gain comfort and familiarity with an artificial partner. Robots like RI-33MAN, PaPeRo, and CareBot. PALRO, QRIO, and other edutainment robots follow this idea and provide companionship (Lin, 2011, p.3). Therefore a sexual robot will not promote a person to be asocial rather they will help to integrate to society. Nowadays robots have overcome the test of Turing successfully (BBC New 2014); it means a huge step in the development of an AI capable of thinking like a human. According to this result, future generations of robots will have a better development in the perception of the environment, besides improving their answers within any emotional situation (empathy). In this way, it would seek to help people with problems related to their integration into society. In addition machines will not undervalue or dismiss respect towards women and children, rather it helps to avoid overexploitation of women and children (see robots and sex with humans). In conclusion, with the arrival of new technologies, the creation of robot sex will be a real fact. Then robot prostitution inevitably becomes a topic of discussion. The availability of sexual robot partners will be of significant social and psychological benefit for society, but at the same time there are important ethical issues to be considered relating to sexual partners.
