Dear Portfolio Reader: My name is Kleber Joshua Sanmartin. Since my first day in Yachay, I have been receiving English two hours daily. At the beginning it was so difficult to learn a new language, but later you going to accustom about learning a new language. The present document going to show all of my essays worked in the English class in level 6. You can find four essays to be exact. These essays going to be in order: 1. response essay, 2. literary analysis, 3. interpretation essay, and 4. final research project essay. At the beginning of this semester I had a lot of issues about write essays. When I had to talk in English, I was shy because my level English was not good. But now I am speaking more fluently, and the essays are not difficult for me. For example, in Response essay I had problems making a good analysis which the topic in the Response Essay was “College education is not an investment“. I think that it happened because I make this essay at last moment, but the next essay I made it on time. It means that, when you don’t have pressure with the time, your ideas flow the better way. I liked having a conversation with my instructor Matthew Mackey, it was a strength for me, because I understood all of questions that Matthew made me, and I knew how to respond him. My principal struggle since I started level 6 is that I have been being dependent on Google Translate to make my assignments. In all of debates or any other speaking assignments I have been talking very well, due to my speaking and listening had improved. My instructor (Matthew) helped me with my thesis statement in the research project. It helped me so much, because the thesis statement is the most important part in the
essay, and with this I was able to do my research project. I had fun with all of the plays that Matthew made us. Especially I had fun in the Halloween party, because there was prizes, plays, and costumes. Making criticisms towards paintings or poems was difficult, but now I can say that I fulfill with one goal in the interpretation essay, because now, I read and understand contemporary articles. Furthermore I see and understand extravagant paintings which the authors give different points of view to interpret. I have improved my speaking, reading, listening and writing in this semester. In the future, I am going to use all of this skills in my investigations. I going to use in my academic life to be a good Engineer and a good professional. Thank you very much for read my portfolio letter. I hope that it portfolio has been a lot of help to you.

EDUCATION IS OR NOT A GOOD INVESTMENT

EDUCATION IS OR NOT A GOOD INVESTMENT
The last century had saw a lot of amazing changes in higher education and technologically, moreover, technical professions and college professions have been growing exponentially. Almost all people since they was children dreamed to be engineers, layers or doctors. In the actuality, having whatever of these professions is not sufficient to be successful. On the one hand, the number of people who access college is growing each day. On the other hand, the number of people who are unemployed is growing, too, around the world. George Leef expound a lot of arguments about going to college is not good in your article “Don´t Buy The Hype, College Education Is Not An Investment“. Almost all people think that if they study, they will have a good job, but this is not always true. Often, students find that after they graduate, they still cannot find good jobs. This is a struggle around the world, but it is still true that college gives you better opportunities than not going at all. George Leef (2013) believes that college will not always be a good investment and having a college degree does not guarantee somebody a job; however, going to college does give people the opportunity to improve their skills and thus have a better opportunity to succeed. Leef says that, there are a lot of professionals either unemployed or employed in jobs that don’t call for any academic preparation. It is a big reason to think that having a college degree is not a good investment, but, people do not think that college just give tools to improve your capacities and abilities. Almost all people just going to the University for obtain a good grades and thus obtain your college degree, but it should not be the goal of someone who is in the college. The most important should be improve their creativity and realize things that were not
perceived. In addition, another goal must not be just thinking in improve their lives. People must be thinking in improve the quality of life of their country. Leef states that the future won’t be similar to the past for many college graduates. For instance, in Ecuador people who have factories published in the trade for any simple work, where they pay the basic salary, however, to the people who have college degree it does not matter just win the minimum salary. In the 21st century is not enough just have a third-level degree; as a result recent college graduates are happened a lot of issues with theirs professions. While more education, more skills people will have, therefore, people will be more productivity. Leef believes that employers reward workers for their productivity. Having a college degree is neither necessary nor sufficient for their productivity. No one receives any payment for having finished college; however, all of people who finished college thinking more creatively and they always have the best ideas in theirs environment, in particular in theirs factories. If the people who go college follow thinking lineally, people do not going to progress. Leef is right in saying that articles on the plight of recent college graduates are very imprecise and misleading, because actual reality is not the same as years ago, as a matter of fact, there are more competition each day, for this reason people need to think nonlinearly; they need to think divergently. Going to college does give people the opportunity to improve their skills and thus have a better opportunity to succeed. On the one hand, Leef gives a good example in his article about three students. People need to be the student A, in other words, people who are a college students should be concentrates on theirs work and substantially raises theirs level of knowledge and skill, and thus people can find a good job in their major field and continues to advance. On the other hand, in the factories there are a few workplaces, as a result the economic crisis around the
world. The key to success does not depends just about you, it also depends of a good education in a good college (formal-education). It is true that the key to success does not depends just college students, but, college students play a leading role in their own future (self-education). Leef asserted that College itself is not an investment, just one way of increasing your value. It is very true, the college degree itself makes no guarantees. Almost all people know that all investment have some risk, although, making a sure investment with theirs education just depends of each people. For this reason, people must change your way of thinking, and it we can get change our basic system education. In conclusion, George Leef has some solid arguments about college education is not an investment, although, there are more solid arguments to think that going to college is good investment, when people know how to do it. In addition, Going to college helps people development their capacities, in other words, it helps to solve problems. Finally, college students make the most of their time to improve their performance and productivity and thus have a better opportunity to succeed. If people want to be successful need to relate self-education with the formal-education to improve their skills and thus having a good performance in any job, as a result, having an excellent future.

Kleber Joshua Sanmartin Atiaga Yachay Tech University Thursday, October 13, 2016
The end of a story always is not what it seems. In the story “Why don’t you dance?” There are many settings, and there are many characteristics of things of things that we found in the story. “THE GLEANERS” BY JEAN-FRANÇOIS MILLET
Some painters use art like a mirror that reflects the social reality in which they live! Over time, art has been used as a way through which people express particular ideas. Especially, artists like painters. Painters use art for expressing through painting personal stories and historical events. For example, in 1857, the French Jean-François Millet painted the painting “The Gleaners”. The painting is a depiction of three-peasant woman gleaning stray wheat grains of a crop earth after the harvest. In fact, Millet painted peasant people because they were considered the lowest ranks of French rural society, and he wanted to express social exclusion of poor people by rich people. As a result, Millet show us the French social reality of 19th century in which he lived. Nowadays, the painting “The Gleaners” is located in “Orsay” Museum, Paris, and the picture dimensions are 83.8 cm × 111.8 cm (33 in × 44 in). In this way, the painting “The Gleaners” by Jean-François Millet show us that poor people suffer discrimination due to fact that
some people of high status have social prejudices because they believe that their opinions or actions are more important than other people opinion. First, the colors and textures in this painting are soft and muted, which shows us their social status. The painter uses earth tones in this painting to show how close the people are to the earth. In other words, the people are close to the earth, much like people in poverty. Furthermore, the gazes and faces of the three women are obscure, which shows us that they do not have a good life, therefore, they are suffer with their social status. It is interesting the dissonance of the colors in the painting. On the one hand, in the bottom, there are tall stacks of grain, which means abundance, but it is painted with the softest colors. On the other hand, in the foreground, there are the three poor women with waste grain in theirs hands, which means poverty, but it is painted with a little lighter colors. Another important characteristic is the color of ground and grass in the foreground. The predominant brown color in the floor shows us that it does not matter the effort of the poor people, in many cases they do not progress. Second, the painting is about 1857, and it was painted after the French revolution of 1848. Millet was son of peasants and lived in France. Therefore, the artist was a poor man in a difficult situation, and he tried to show the world how difficult it is to live and work in the field. When Millet painted “the Gleaners, people of middle and upper class were against him because they did not care about low class people life. The artist tries to show us the realism of fieldwork, this is not an easy job and women used to be in charge of this. The artist himself lived in poverty because that is the only way in which he could paint the reality of the poor people around him. In other word, Millet tries to describe the discrimination that forest people suffer every day for their social status.
Third, the painting “The Gleaners” is a way to express the personal point of view of Millet. The author show us the true face of rural work, in its hardest aspect. According to Musée d'Orsay, the picture presents three women in full task, crouching to pick up the ears, represent a realistic work with its vivid colors and accentuating volumes (Musée d’Orsay, 2006). In addition, we can see the three phases of these repetitive movements imposed by this work: bending over, picking up the ears of corn and straightening up again. The wish of the author is criticize the hard condition of the gleaners. Finally, the painting “The Gleaners” by Jean-François Millet show us that there are some people who underestimate other people such as peasants because their social status. In this way, Millet is express the social condition of French peasant people 19th century through representation of women picking grain of wheat from the ground. In other words, "The Gleaners" is a realistic vision of French society post Industrial Revolution. In addition, Millet made a social critique because the painting was a way for reporting hard large hours of work in the countryside. However, the messenger about discrimination that show us Millet thought his painting is not an insignificant fact. Because nowadays, we continue live in a society with prejudice towards minorities.
For example, in Ecuador, some people who live in cities discriminates to
indigenous people who arrive to these cities for working in bad and dangerous jobs such as: candy street sellers. Social discrimination is a reality that had affected some people in the last centuries; however, we can avoid it, accepting people as they are!

Final Research Project Essay
Having a good education is the only way in the Ecuador to improve the current economic situation. Kleber Joshua Sanmartin Atiaga Yachay Technological University for Experimental Research 04 / 12 /2016
Abstract Ecuador needs to resolve big problems with its education system. The education in Ecuador could be the way to improve its current economic situation. Ecuador has a lot of mistakes about its education system, but the most principals mistakes that Ecuador has are: Ecuador do not invest in education, Student has a linearly thinking, and Ecuador do not have an educational equality. To sum up, Ecuador needs to adopt the Finland education system, because the Finland Education system has: Students with divergent thinking, an educational equality, and the Government invest so much in education. Finland economy is based in the education. For this reason Finland is the first country in education. If Ecuador taken this example for its education, Ecuador would overcome the poverty. Ecuadorian students would create more innovation projects to make that Ecuador became in a world power. A good education in Ecuador is the way for all Ecuadorians to have a good life and a good economy.
Having a good education is the only way in the Ecuador to improve the current economic situation. John Dewey once said, “Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself". Ecuador has been experimenting a lot of changes since Rafael Correa assumed the presidency. Correa has had very good ideas about the education, but the ideas don’t be enough to overcome underdevelopment and change the productive matrix in Ecuador. Ecuador must to confront big obstacles with its educative system. A way for the country can overcome the underdevelopment is to have a solid education system, in which creativity is the basis to consolidate changes in Ecuador. Ecuador needs a better education, based in creativity, equality, and self-confidence in order to build a better society, with more scientific development. Ecuador needs to invest more in education, needs to foster divergent thinking in the education system, needs to promote educational equality and needs to adopt the Finland education system in order to improve its current economic situation. The economic situation in Ecuador has had a financial crisis due to the price of oil decreased. Ecuador depends principally of oil, however Ecuador export different product around the world too. It means that Ecuador is an oil country. The price of oil years ago was more than one hundred dollars, but in the actuality just is around fifteen dollars. The economy of Ecuador is suffering a stagnation. Ecuador's indebtedness to China is approximately 8500 millions of dollars. It means that Ecuador has become economical dependent on China, but Ecuador no just is indebted with China, Ecuador is indebted with other countries like Turkey and with public and private institutions like: Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), Central Bank of Ecuador, among others. For this reason is so important change the productive matrix. Ecuador needs to have better education system to build new projects. If Ecuador doesn’t want depending of the oil, it need change the productive matrix with new technologies (Pozo, 2016).
The origin of the problem of poverty is the lack of education in all the countries. No country have had success if it have not educated to its people. It means that is necessary have education to be successful. On the one hand, people who are educated have opportunities to leave of the poverty, on the other hand, people or citizens who are not prepared, they don’t help to build a better society. The education no just help to overcome poverty, it helps to wealth creation. The big results of education in the poverty eradication is less direct, however people going to see results to long time (UNESCO, 2001). Basically Ecuador needs to change a lot of thing about its educative system. The first big problem is that Ecuador does not invest enough in education, schools do not provide good education and the country is stagnant in underdevelopment. Most importantly, teachers receive a low salary. That is why nobody wants to be a teacher in Ecuador. Arcos says that schools in rural areas have only three teachers, which shows that Ecuador does not invest well in education (Arcos, 2008). In addition, almost all public schools have poor structures with poor conditions; on the contrary, private schools offer better education than public schools. A country that does not invest in public education, it never could create wealth for itself. However, teachers play a key role in good education, so in Ecuador, teachers need to improve their skills. Ecuador needs to have divergent education and not linear education to overcome the poverty. It means that Ecuador needs to foster divergent thinking in the education system. Ken Robinson says that all of people have divergent thinking, but it mostly deteriorates a cause of education system which means that education system in all the world had obligated to students to lose creativity. Robinson says that Education needs to change paradigms. Furthermore Robinson says that people can improve education system leaving of thinking linearly and thinking with creativity (Robinson, 2010).
Robinson is right, for instance teachers in all Ecuador do not teach to think divergently, they just teach to think linearly which means that teachers just teach to memorize. A reason would be Ecuadorian teachers do not have a good preparation. Teachers do not receive good remuneration, and for this reason they do not show effort in their job. In Ecuador, teachers only teach to memorize all of the things, and they do not teach to have creativity. In addition, people with creativity are those who will create great things to overcome poverty. Ecuador needs to promote educational equality. For example in Ecuador a lot of children work on the streets, they don’t have opportunity to study, which shows that Ecuador is an underdevelopment country. Ecuador needs to fulfill with right to education towards all of children. The education should have the same level of education in all the country without discrimination. Chisahuano says that in Ecuador whom suffer more about discrimination are indigenous and peasants (Chisahuano, 2006). If poor people would have a good education, they would have an opportunity to overcome the poverty. Possibly the best ideas to be a rich country could have indigenous, or peasants or any poor people. Ecuador needs to adopt the Finland education system. Ecuador wants to change the production model through education and a successful path could be following the model of the Finland education system. Ecuador needs a better education, based on creativity, equality, and self-confidence in order to build a better society, with more scientific development. According to Wagner, Finland around 1960 stopped its economic growth, which made it its economy dependent of knowledge, productivity and skill (2012). Ecuador must take this example to change the productive matrix. Ecuador must leave to be an oil country and it became a country that depends on the good education. Ecuador needs an education that permit to people to make better technological developments (Wagner, 2013).
Ecuador needs to invest more in education to overcome the poverty, but Rafael Correa says that Ecuador is the country in Latin America that makes more invest in education. Furthermore, Correa says that in his government Ecuador has given leaps and bounds in education, which had allowed Ecuador to become a world power. In addition, Correa said that Ecuador had invested around 7.348 million dollars. All of the data that the president says are just an estimation that his minister tells him. In other words, Ecuador gives around 1.8% of gross domestic product (GDP) for education; unlike other rich countries that only invest around 1.6% of gross domestic product (GDP). Correa says that Ecuador has had important advances in education due to Correa had built new schools with better structures. Finally, Correa says that all of child and young have the same level of education in all the country (Correa, 2013). Rafael Correa, says that his administration gives the sufficient money for the education. However, People can not to see a big investment in education. For example, in rural areas there are not any teachers. All of the schools in rural zones just have 3 or less teachers, moreover, the classrooms are in very poor condition and lack basic services. A cause could be corruption, because, in many cases, people who control the Ecuadorian education steals the money; another cause could be that Ecuador has inefficient officials because is evident the excessive administrative expense, but the Ecuadorian education system do not improve. It means that people who control the education makes that Ecuador to be an underdevelopment country; so they need to work hard to improve the education and have a good distribution of money in all the country to overcome the poverty (Garcia, 2013). In conclusion, the Ecuadorian education system must confront big obstacles, but this obstacles can be resolved. The Ecuadorian education system is characterized by the lack of quality in teachers, bad structures in the schools and high schools, and the lack of a divergent thinking. The education system in Ecuador needs to be developed for that Ecuadorian
students can overcome poverty. People who have a good education have more possibilities to progress and overcome poverty which shows that education is the solution. Ecuador needs people with a divergent thinking. Ecuador needs to be a country where there is no discrimination, where there are no inequalities, and where there is good investment in the education system. If Ecuadorian students would have the Finland education, they could create new technologies to help people and help Ecuadorian economy. Furthermore, Ecuadorian students could have good projects to make progress the Ecuadorian economy.
