Lenin Rueda Castillo 6433. Abdon Calderรณn , Avenue Urcuqui, Imbabura, Ecuador December 6, 2016 Dear Portfolio Reader, My name is Lenin. Thanks for reading this my English Language Portafolio. It is a collection of my best work in English of level six and I have been a great experience because my level of English has improved in different ways. I have learnt some topics. These topics were of great help to me. First, this English course helped me to improve my skills such as: listening, writing, speaking and reading. I also can say that this course helped me to take the science classes. I am taking classes in the major of computer science. To my major have helped me to do better my presentation and that I can understand the classes with a better pronunciation. In addition, I have remembered about grammar. With it I could make my essays in a better way how you can look next. First I will write about my essay that I have written and how have helped me. My response essay first draft that was written on Thursday September 22. With it I have learnt more vocabulary and to search in more sources. On this essay a friend helped me to correct my mistakes on grammar. However, my teacher told me if I wanted to learn I should to research myself or to ask her. The first moment I thought my effort was in vain. After I taken into consideration the teacher words were for my good. Since that time I research more vocabulary and search the internet sentences that I think that have mistaken. Although tis can take me a long time. I always looked to do my best effort because in homework we

have more time. We sometimes have for one week the homework. Now I will write about response essay that was written on Thursday September 22. In this essay I have learnt about how give our opinion to a writer. For this essay We needed to read about the investment in the University. I agreed with some points that author mentioned. On this essay, I did my best. and gave to this my opinion. In addition, I learnt more vocabulary and I understood better when I read some readings of this type. Second I will write about my research paper that was written on Monday December 5. For to do this essay I needed take into consideration the next points: research question and thesis statement, research unnoted bibliography, research outline. First, I learnt of better way how to do a proper research paper. For me when we have to write thesis statement I have too mistakes, but with this course I write better my thesis statement that is the most important. I have learnt about research questions that we need to make. Besides, I learnt to do research annotated bibliography. With this I had a better idea about my paper. This is a kind of summary where we need to write the main ideas. Third, I would like write about presentation and the presentations about grammar of each group. I had forgotten something about grammar but with each presentation that we made I remembered it. The first presentation was about narrative tenses. However, I will write of the presentations that I most learnt. That presentation was about "wish". I remembered it and the way of giving the presentation was fun. I have learnt about pronunciation because teacher correct the pronunciation in each student. With this I can to do better my presentations.

Thank you again for reading my portfolio. I put in a great deal of effort into my portfolio, and I hope you enjoy reading it. I am confident that you will agree with me that I have become more proficient in English and am ready to pursue my career.

Sincerely,

Lenin Rueda Castillo

Higher Education is not Just an Investment Lenin Rueda Castillo Yachay University of Experimental Technology and Research

Higher Education is not Just an Investment “Education will always be an investment, and not an expense. Rafael Correa. George Leef claims that a college degree is not a guarantee of finding a job because today companies are looking for people with skills. Mr. Leef is the director of research of the John W. Pope Center for Higher Education Policy. He received a bachelor of arts from Carroll University in 1973 and a Juris Doctor from the Duke University School of Law. He frequently elaborates on his views about education and public policy on the Forbes page. George Leef's ideas in his article are very true. Today many young people study a degree thinking that they can obtain a job when they finish university. The reality is that it does not matter if you study in the university or not, what really it imports there are the skills of every person. Nowadays, young people should not get into debt if only they think that with a degree they can obtain any job, for it is necessary have knowledge, skills, and critical thinking. Firstly, students who are going to study a college degree must do it because they want have more knowledge. If a young person only wants to study to earn money and don’t have skills, they could not find some job. In university we can learn to improve our skills and it helps to increase the knowledge of us. At University students can ask questions to teachers about concerns that have something of interest. Many authorities from different universities still are lying to young people that if they graduate they can find work and recover the money invested (Leef, 2013). Many young people are still the university career only to earn money and think that is an economic advantage. Companies do not seek people only by the college degree, companies are looking for trained persons. University helps students develop their skills but does not ensure that finding a job. If people have developed skills can get a job even if you do not have a College Degree (Leef. 2013).

In my opinion education obtained at the University, is very valuable because if a person stands out in what he does can get good jobs. In college you learn skills that can help you perform better in any company. Some skills obtained in the University are to be able to work in a group, make reports so that anyone can understand the results, and be able to search bibliographic information from different sources. With a college degree salary may be higher than a person who does not have a college degree (Leef, 2013). However, companies are looking for critical thinking that is an incredibly important skill to have. University can to help to improve the critical thinking, but people young also can improve their skills without go to University. In the article Don’t Buy The Hype College Education Is Not an Investment it is more persuasive towards readers because this article wants to point out that a person can succeed or fail in finding a job with or without a college degree. In the article is gives examples about how the University could be good investment and that really worth considering a degree. The author gives examples of three persons in an interview. The first person was not to university and is successful in their working life without having a college degree. This person is very intelligent and have better skills than any other person who has a university degree. The second person was only to the university because he wanted to find a job even though he was always bad student, this person has no good skills. The last person is a dedicated person who thinks that university can help him increase his knowledge. Finally, university can be a great investment for many young people. It is a great investment when people want to have more knowledge and improve their skills. When young people want a college degree only to make money, they are wrong. A college degree not is an advantage economic. There are still Universities that are lying to young people who can find a job with a degree. Many people do loans thinking that they can find work only having a degree. The reality today is that companies are looking for new skills in their employees.

Critical Analysis the Story of an Hour Lenin Rueda Castillo Yachay University of Experimental Technology and Research

Heart trouble of a life The Story of an hour was written by Kate Chopin. This story is about a young woman who had a heart trouble and for this reason she died. The heart trouble is a way in which this story might be considered symbolic because in the all story should always be in quiet places. She didn't can receive bad news, and finally the heart trouble was the cause of her death. In addition, the story was written in second person and the environment was quiet. First, she was always in her house and saw the trees and the spring life. It is a nice place to keep the peace that an ill need. Moreover, she was always looking for a nice place, for example, she saw the blue sky through her windows (Chopin, 1894). When she opened the window it was comfortable and her body seemed to reach into her soul. Second, when started the story, the news of the death of her husband has given her of a way not strong. Moreover, when she was motionless, come up into her throat and shock her (Chopin, 1894). She had too news because of it she starts to cry. Third reason, the trouble heart was the cause of her death. First she knew that someday her death would come. When felt that she was waiting for something and was reaching toward some sound. Moreover, when she abandoned herself a little whispered and she said "free, free!". In her eyes had look of terror (Chopin, 1894). The heart trouble was because she had pulses beat fast. In addition, when finish the story the people said that she died for heart disease. In conclusion, this story is for problem of heart and it is a symbol that shows that these are the reason of her death. The story is in a quiet place.

Interpretation Essay: Corpus Hypercubus: The Difficulty of Understanding Science and Religion

Lenin Rueda, Osiris Romรกn, Cecilia Medina

Yachay University of Experimental Technology and Research

Corpus Hypercubus: The Difficulty of Understanding Science and Religion “The atomic explosion of August 6, 1945, shook me seismically. Thenceforth, the atom was my favorite food for thought.” Salvador Dalí Scientific concepts are clearly represented in this famous painting: at first named Crucifixion. This piece of art emphasizes the mathematical shapes, hypercube, and it was well-known as Corpus Hypercubus created by Salvador Dalí. He was born in 1904, and he was a Spanish surrealist painter. Moreover, there is an interesting fact about him and that could explain his genuine interest in the mind and the supernatural world, this is that his older brother was named Salvador too. His brother died some months after the birth of the artist. and Salvador Dalí grew up with the idea that he was the reincarnation of his brother. Dalí produced several famous paintings that set him apart as a great surrealist painter. However, Dalí’s interest in surrealism decreased because of the amazing discoveries in science that occurred during the epoch between 1940 and 1950. His interest increased with the bombing of Hiroshima in 1945. The astonishment of this event left him a great ambition to resolve the mysteries of science and religion. His passion to understand those issues made him create several paintings considered his masterpieces. In the Corpus Hypercubus, the artist put a big effort to represent the closeness that science and religion has. Therefore, the Corpus Hypercubus is one of the most popular paintings made by Salvador Dalí, because it has a modern meaning of the crucifixion, a creative use of mathematics in art and a resourceful portrayal of the relationship between science, religion, and art.

Corpus Hypercubus could be interpreted with certain connotations according its details. This famous painting was made with oil on canvas and the canvas measures 194.5 x

124 cm (Hornik, 7 August 2010). In addition, this painting has a main approach to Christ suspended in a cross of cubes, Dalí uses his imagination and colors to carry the painting beyond what is realistic. The artist uses math to tell that there is no fulfillment to the holy Trinity. (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) because it lacks an important element that is Mary. Therefore, faith is four dimensional. The painting shows the past, present and future of Christ. Mary in front of Christ indicates Christ's birth, the cross symbolizes the present that is the crucifixion, and the cross floating indicates the future that is Christ's future resurrection (Piderit & Morey, 2012, p.234). The painting presents it as if it is moving in a parallel movement from the cross, while from another angle it seems that Christ move towards the cross. This can represent the Christian belief that Christ knows everything and sees everything. The chessboard represents different ways that a human being can take. The piece of art painted by Salvador Dalí has a strong relationship between “Corpus Hypercubus” and religion. The major part of the painting is the body of Christ. The body of Christ is elevated on the air representing the most famous scene “The crucifixion”. At the bottom of the painting Mary, the mother of Jesus, is seeing his body. The feeling that this scene gives to the painting is faith. The Latin cross is also an important part of the painting, it is placed in the ground just below the Hypercubus. The entire painting demonstrates that Salvador Dalí was inspired by Christianity when he created this masterpiece. The religion was a great part of his life. He proclaimed himself as Catholic, Apostolic and Roman. The “Corpus Hypercubus” also had a heavy relationship between it and science. Salvador Dalí was amazed by all new discoveries of his age. He tried to represent all of his passion of science and he included this in the painting. Salvador Dalí expressed his passion by the latest discoveries about atomic disintegration, quantum mechanics and the fourth dimension. As the body of Christ is the major representation of religion, the unfolded

Hypercubus is the major representation of science. The unfolded tesseract dimension had recently been discovered by a mathematician. Salvador Dalí took advantage of this discovery to use in his painting as the representation of the cross where Christ was crucified. Geometry is also used when Dalí painted the shadow of the unfolded tesseract on the ground. These are the ways Dalí tried to represent his love for science, just as he did with other paintings. Conclusion In conclusion Salvador Dalí was one of the most representative painters of his age. His pieces of art created a new theory of art that combined religion, mathematics, science,

and Catalan culture in an attempt to revive classical values and techniques. The new art theory created by Salvador Dali was called Nuclear mysticism. “Corpus Hypercubus” represent all the new concept presented by Dalí with the best mix between science and religion. “Corpus Hypercubus” has caused a lot of controversy. A lot of viewers see this painting as a good representation of the crucifixion of Jesus. At the same time, other viewers think that this painting violates his beliefs. Hence why this masterpiece has gained so much fame in the world of art.

Legalize it All How to Win the War on Drugs Lenin Rueda Castillo Yachay University of Experimental Technology and Research

Legalize it All How to Win the War on Drugs “If you fight a war for forty years and don’t win, you have to sit down and think about other things to do that might be more effective” BBC Nowadays, the world has some problems with society such as drugs. Each country has started a war on drugs, but all in vain so far. In Latin America, many people have died due to organized crime, many of them were only transporting the drugs and were not producing it. Some people go jail and are sentenced draconian punishment. Each year, millions of tons or drugs are brought to United States (Baum, 2016). However, with today’s policies, some people have been disenfranchised because of a felony conviction. Each country should legalize all kind of drugs because with less organized crime, we would waste less money on building jails and with legal drugs have more inspection in drug health. Firstly, drug prohibition only gives more money to drug traffickers and each time it increases. If each country were to legalize the selling of drugs, it could be less. For example, in countries such as Portugal, organized crime continues but is less severe when compared to other years(Baum,2016). However, with the prohibition of drugs there are millions of lives destroyed and it is most apparent with poor families. Organized crime takes advantage of people from poor families and with few resources. Without money on catching drug traffickers, we could create more opportunities for jobs. When people make good income, there is no need to resort to selling drugs. Countries should waste less money on building more jails. Nowadays, jails are filled with people who have tried taking some kind of drug or people who take drugs to

other countries, but their leader remains free. Instead of building jails, each country should invest in people who are addicted. However, addiction is relatively small and the number of people who have an addiction is a million out of 319 million of the people who do hard drugs (Baum, 2016). The amount of money used to run organized crime is greater than that invested in assisting addicts. In addition, legalizing more drugs wouldn’t increase the number of people addicted. If each country has proper policy, for example to sell only a minimal amount of drugs and monitor everyone’s health with a doctor. Drugs do not have adequate health inspection in their processing. Most drugs that people try are in the worst conditions possible. If each country were to legalize them all, each lab or hospital could make drugs in adequate conditions. Today, buying off the black market is very dangerous for consumers. For example, deaths in United States for heroin that people buy on the black market is so harmful for people’s health (Baum, 2016). With prescription drugs it could be less harmful to one’s health. In order to prevent more deaths, every country needs proper policy. Finally, the war on drugs is one that we’ll never win. Countries need a solution and the best one so far is legalizing drugs. If each country were to put a proper policy into place with the legalization the drugs, money invested in organized crime could go towards aiding people with addiction, and we could give more jobs to people instead of building more jails and aid in reducing the deaths each year.

Refugee crisis from Syria in Europe Lenin Rueda Yachay University of Experimental Technology and Research

Abstract The purpose of the paper is to examine why the European Union must adjust its asylum policy to the Syrian refugees. I focus my research on the benefits that they can have by accepting refugees and as it might affect asylum rejection in the future. The first point to take into consideration is that the low birthrate in these European countries. The countries need labor in order to keep growing its economy. The refugees who come to Europe mostly are very young people. It shows itself that every time labor offers exist more for works of low qualification as well as also professionals need for the demand. Many of the refugees may occupy the jobs that Europeans don't want to take. Finally, this study finds that there are too many people who try to come to Europe as a consequence of the conflicts that exist in Syria. Traffickers cheat many of those who have come. Keywords: Syrian refugees, economy, European Migration policy

European Union needs coherent policies for Syrian refugees “The European union has miserably failed to play its part in providing a safe haven to the refugees who lost all but their lives Amnesty International’s Salil Shetty. European Union is seen by many countries of the world like one of the best models of progress. Europe was known for their territorial wars, but from the creation of the European Union the wars have diminished. Many years ago in the wars that were taking place in Europe there were many who were emigrating for asylum. Germany often in its dark past refused to give asylum to refugees. Nowadays a migratory crisis exists in most of countries that are from Europe like: Germany, Greece, and France (Laczko,2016). Most of migrants come from Syria, because there is war. The refugees that go to Europe pass through very dangerous routes in the Mediterranean Sea, considered the most dangerous in the world. This passage is the Mediterranean one that every year takes to thousands of persons looking for a better future. European Union should adjust its asylum policy for people from Syria because immigrants contribute to increase the imbalance of birthrate that exists bearing to increase the economy with more labor and avoid deaths because of tricks. The total fertility rate is not much over 1.5 children per woman, skilled immigrants fill in-demand job vacancies and with a coherent asylum policy provides a safe option for groups on an awful situation in Syria to immigrate to the European Union. First, an aged Europe needs young persons to grow the economy. One problem that is happening in Europe is that every time the Europeans have fewer children. To a future the problem of having the very low birth rate might bring consequences. One of the consequences is that without young people there is no labor to continue the production of economy of the industries. In Europe the persons pay a very high insurance. When the persons retire there will not be the one who consumes these pensions. The United Nations (UN) estimates that for the 2025 in Germany there will be 2.5 workers for each pensioner and

each time decreases more (Fratzscher,2015). There are countries where its economies are growing increasingly like Germany. Many of the Syrian migrants who come to Europe are very young persons who can fill this gap of birthrate that exists. Some persons in Europe have no children because the life is very expensive. To be able to pay the education of the children it is like getting into debt for an apartment. Between other one of the causes of the low birthrate the fact is that many people worry more about finishing their university studies. The employment positions in Europe that the Europeans cannot do must be filled so that it continues the economy. Whenever more persons exist with university title in the European countries and are employed at work places that are qualified. Many of not very quiet qualified work places need personnel so that they fill these employment positions. In the industries personnel is needed so that they fill vacancies as the cleanliness, agriculture, between others. These sectors as the agriculture are necessary to increase the income in a country. For it the refugees might occupy these jobs and continue with the income increase in every country. In addition, there are jobs that are qualified, but there do not are too many persons who fill these positions. A large number of Syrian refugees have a college degree those present themselves can occupy vacancies that the company needs. A Switzerland private bank estimated that receive a million refugees each year would increase 0,2 % of the European GDP (Aiyar,2016). Nevertheless, there are people who think that many of the refugees only come to Europe with intentions of doing terrorist acts. Besides, many Europeans have complained that the migrants occupy the jobs leaving unemployed men them. A well-known case is that of the United Kingdom that realized a referendum to leave the European Union for the migrants' topic. The Mediterranean Sea is turning into the worst deadly place of the world. Since it began the conflicts in some countries of half an east like Syria many have happened for this sea. This sea is the main route so that million refugees reach its target that is Europe. People

in search of a better life for its family they do not measure the consequences. Apparently it does not import the dangers that could exist. They want to be only in a calm place and that its children could study and have a better life. To this fact many people take advantage of these persons. There are traffickers who receive a strong quantity from the refugees promising them that are going to come to Europe in appropriate conditions. They are cheated by the traffickers and in awful conditions. Many from which they travel in these crafts are forgotten in the Mediterranean Sea. This way the Mediterranean is turning into a cemetery. Between 2000 and 2013, more than 23000 persons have lost the life (Last, 2015). The European governments have tried to create a plan of familiar reunification for the migrants who are already in Europe. With this plan Europe glides to diminish the number of dead persons and bring refugees' relatives in proper conditions. Finally, the European Union must change their asylum policies because it is necessary to solve many problems. Some problems happen in the present and will happen in the future affecting its economy. Most of Syrian's refugees are young people and they could help to increase the European GDP. Many Europeans do not want to do the jobs low skilled. Those refugees that ask for asylum can occupy those positions. In many European countries as Germany needs many professionals such as engineers. Between the refugees there are persons who have a college degree. Currently many refugees trying to reach Europe make it in a very dangerous way. The number of dead in the sea Mediterranean is an alarming figure. In addition, with coherent policies the number of people cheated by traffickers could decrease.
