FINAL RESEARCH PROJECT ESSAY
REFLECTIVE LETTER
Liceth Minaya Block F 1.1 December 14th, 2016
Dear Portfolio Reader, Never leave home without the desire to learn something new! My name is Liceth Minaya. Thank you very much for reading my English Language Portfolio. It is a collection of my works in English, and those show my skill as an English language learner at Yachay Tech. My portfolio consists of three essays and a research project that I designed and developed in my level 6 English course. The English language is necessary to continue in Yachay University and I consider that my learning process here was a metamorphosis as in the butterfly. The caterpillar builds his house with a lot of materials, then it becomes a beautiful butterfly. It takes a long time and in my case I built my progress by increasing my listening, speaking, and writing, these were my materials throughout this process. And now, I am the butterfly wanting to fly, sure to have the bases and a good progress in my English language because I could survive all the challenges that arose during my metamorphosis. Always I felt shame talk front of my classmates and this increased when it was in English. Even though never my fellow mocked me but always I had the embarrassment of pronouncing something wrong and fear that they do not understand the message that I wanted to transmit them. That fear and shame were present in the descriptive presentation on the work of art called the Birth of Venus. This presentation was terrible because my group never met to do the work, we always did the work online and I think if it was a team work we should have met and worked together. But I have learned that the person who does not make mistakes does not learn, and even if it seems funny, the things you never forget are those that left you a great lesson. My lesson in this presentation was that you should choose a leader
when you work in groups, found what is the objective and the methodology that will be applicated. Level six had obstacles very hard to pass, among them, I remember when I delivered my first proposal essay and I work hard last night before delivering it. When I received the grade it was disheartening to know that I got zero. But that made me understand that the homework is better done on the day you are informed, not wait for the last day and it is recommended that you follow the assignment. In the assignment is described everything that the teacher wants to find in your work. So, do not waste that opportunity. Always read the assignments before you start doing your duty. In spite of that, I did not stop and continued to strive. In my second essay, I followed the assignment and I got a seven. A seven that for many is not a good mark but for me had a great meaning and a great lesson. Every job you do needs your time and you have to do it right. And the last experience than I can share you is about to program your absences very well, in my case I chose biology as a degree and I did not plan that I had field trips in the last months. I missed seven English classes because I was sleepy or because I just did not want to go, then I needed to miss because in my field trips we went for a day and sometimes for three days. I learned that you should not miss because "today I do not wake up wanting to go to class", all classes are very important and you must go. Now I have enough absences and if I do it again I lose the English level due to absences. Although sometimes the situation seems difficult at times impossible, you must continue! Sometimes I thought that I would never be able to understand another language or worse still receive all of my classes in English. But now I can comprehend them correctly. Shame is gone of course and trust has come to tell me that perseverance and doesn't break the rules are the best friends when you want to learn another language. I really feel that I can continue to the next level in the English Program offered by Yachay Tech. I commit myself to continue
increasing my second language and never stop learning and practicing it. Thank you again for reading my portfolio. I put all my effort into this portfolio, and I hope you enjoy reading it.
Sincerely,
Liceth Patricia Minaya Gonzalez.

Response to Speech “How do You Define Yourself” “The secret to be beauty is simple, be who you are” Bobbie Brown. People have a lot of definitions for beauty but I think it doesn’t have because beauty is subjective. In the video called “How do You Define Yourself” by Lizzie Velasquez, she talks about her life with an unknown syndrome, how hard has been living with it and what are “the advantages” of having it. She expressed that her childhood was very difficult because she was discriminated by her partners for her “ugly appearance” since the first day in the school. Her physical appearance cannot be very nice but in her speech, it shows how without a "good looks" you can meet all the goals you set for yourself. I agree with Lizzie. I think that we are the only ones who can decide how the "great misfortune" affect us or benefit us in our life. There are only two people that have this syndrome in the world, for this reason, is very hard for science to find what this syndrome is. However, there are stupid people that called her “monster,” I think that they are uneducated and with poor judgment formed. Their comments about her appearance were very bad because they recommended that she should kill herself. Yes, they are stupid people. I know that. It was not easy for Lizzie to achieve her goals because many people rejected her or just did not give her the opportunity to show her talent. Velasquez (2014) confirms that “I have an amazing, amazing support system around me, who never pity me, who are there to pick me up when I am sad, and they taught me that even I am having disease, even if things are hard, I can’t let that define me”. Therefore, Lizzie never stopped or surrendered her dreams, nay, she used the bad comments as a ladder to climb and reach your goals. Society would be better if they didn’t give any importance to the physical appearance and they would look for the essence of the person. Nowadays, there is discrimination, but I think that is minor in comparison with years ago. Nonetheless, the physical appearance remains an essential factor to be accepted in certain social groups. When I said “the essence

of the person”, I refer to what is invariable and permanent nature of things. The essence is what makes a being or an object is what it is. The essence of a person is human warmth among other qualities that person may possess. There are many qualities together and it shows when treated immediately at the person. There are few people who have that essence, but if you notice and feel. I believe that it may be a gift of life and Lizzie has it. "It can be really hard to understand what defines you. Because there are times when I feel so angry and frustrated that I do not care what defines me" (Velasquez, 2014). This indicates that for her this stops in front of the public, first, she had to go through a very long process, not that his illness will bestow that gift and achieved her goals. I think that things are not easy for her or anyone, much less find that is what defines us. Find a definition for me is a real challenge. Lizzie is an excellent motivational speaker because she sounds in his speech very convinced of what he says and I do not deny she also managed to convince me. Now I think if I find what defines me, I can achieve everything I intend or want for my future. To find your essence or find that you define yourself as a person is very hard because of the essence of the person, is what you do being as such, and that gives you value above all those beings who populate the universe. And I really want that! This syndrome affects your body mass; she cannot gain weight, so she must eat as long as possible and all kinds of food also has impaired vision in her right eye, among other things. Although we see all these diseases as a misfortune or as something wrong, she takes it as a benefit. If Lizzie did not have that motivation instilled in her by his parents since she was a child, maybe she had taken all the criticism she had from the beginning of her life and who knows, maybe she would have ended her life. She never thought that she was “different” However her syndrome made her take her disease like another advantage over the rest of people. “My life was put in my hands, just like your life is put in yours” (Velasquez, 2014). I agree with her because she made her decisions and through these, she continued her life. Her

parents are an essential factor in her life, but whether she did not take charge of your life, no one else could do. Body image represents the way in which an individual perceives, imagines, feels and acts regarding his or her own body. Lizzie has an excellent perception of herself. She believes that her physical appearance doesn’t limit her dreams. She works as a motivational speaker and she is a writer too. She has goals and she fights for all of them. There is only one goal she has failed to deliver, she wants to form a family. However, I am sure that if the discrimination changes in our society, she would surely achieve it with an excellent person like her if I had the chance to talk to her, I would tell her not to give up on finding a family. Or else she can consider other options, such as adoption. In conclusion, there may be a lot of problems in our lives, but it depends on us whether we can move forward or not. Lizzie has disadvantages with her eyesight, her weight, her illness. Nevertheless, there is only one word that defines her: feisty. She has been a fighter since she was in the womb, without amniotic fluid she kept her development, she did not give up, ever. I consider that Lizzie is a true example to follow. Come on, we have all the tools to do it. The only thing we should be able to find to move us forward is what we really think defines ourselves. I already have a definition of myself, do you have yours?

Literary Analysis about “Why Don’t you Dance?”

Literary Analysis about “Why Don’t you Dance? When you start to read one story, you want to find an excellent style to continue reading. In a narrative text there are a lot of elements, theme and setting are two of them. Every time the theme or topic is very important. It can create an excellent expectation for the reader because it is a central idea for the story. The setting also is very important because you can include the historical moment in time and geographic location in which a story takes place, and it helps initiate the main backdrop and mood for a story. Those styles can be related in one section, for example in “Why Don’t you Dance? written by Raymond Carver shows that theme and settings have a strong relationship in this story. The story is about an ordinary man moved to desperation by reversals of fortune. This narrative story explains all of it; when and where the story is happening. The reader can discover or to imagine the scene because the man described all there are in his suit. The melancholic man was describing his house. Apparently, the man had recently received a disappointment of maybe the loss of his wife. His descriptive narrative shows that he is alone and nothing in his house is changed. His feelings are very sad, some things are in cartons. The theme “Why Don’t you Dance?” gives to the reader one idea about reasons or causes of why one person don’t want to dance. First of all, when you dance can be for showing your happiness. The art of dancing is the window of your feelings. For this reason a little part of the story said that “you can dance if you want to” and the boy said “well, I’m drunk” then the girl said “dance with me” to the man and she came to him with her arms wide open. All of this part show that the man has the wish to dance, maybe he wanted to express his feelings of alone. “Those people over there, they are watching” she said”. “It is okay” the man said. “It is my place” he said. Also this part, showed how the man wanted to dance. The setting in the story is development in a bedroom suite in front of the yard. The scene shows that this bedroom was alone for one period of time, but every things were in

their place. The man said “his said, he said”. This phrase shows that the man was melancholic. His feelings wanted a friend for a conversation or maybe he only wanted to stay with someone. He described all his house. When he danced with the girl, he didn’t feel alone. He said “pick something”, and he held the records out to her. The man wanted to share his things or feelings with someone. The theme and setting should always have a relationship in the stories. In the short story called “Why Don’t you dance?” shows to the reader how a middle-aged man feel and how he shared his feelings with a girl when they are dancing. Also, the author never said the reason of why the man was melancholic. The scene is very detailed in the setting style and this has a relationship with the theme. The story allows a good plot, theme and setting, but maybe the author should write a better end because it is very open for the imagination of the reader.

INTERPRETATION OF THE BIRTH OF VENUS

Interpretation of The Birth of Venus by Sandro Botticelli Alessandro di Mariano di Vanni known as Sandro Botticelli, was born on March 1, 1445 in Florence, Italy and died on May 17, 1510 in Florence. Alessandro was the youngest of four children of marriage formed by Mariano di Vanni di Amadeo and Smeralda Filipepi. Sandro Botticelli was an Italian painter of the early Renaissance-era and he contributed to the frescoes in the Sistine Chapel. Among his most important works are: The Birth of Venus, Simonetta, Allegory of Spring, Adoration of the Magi and Chart of Hell. (Stern, 2016). The purpose of the paintings of Botticelli were inspire the viewer to imagine the harmony between body and mind. The Birth Of Venus is undoubtedly one of the most famous and appreciated works of art in the world. Painted by Sandro Botticelli between 1482 and 1485, it has become a symbol of fifteenth-century Italian painting. Currently it’s shown in the rooms 10/14 of the Uffizi gallery, located in Florence Spain. Before considering the essence of the painting you should appreciate the design, colors, and material by which the painting was made. Botticelli used the technique of tempera on canvas, by which you can observe the work in detail since this technique consisted of using the diluted egg yolk, giving it a touch of freshness. Although the canvases were not very popular in Renaissance times, the painter decided to do it in this material because the wood panels did not resist moisture. The colors used by Botticelli are soft and clear that is why when contemplating the work of art you can feel a touch of gallantry and serenity to be observed. This was one of the most important painting for the art's history because previously the only naked body painted by the artists of the time was that of Eve. Typical paintings with the serpent tempting Eve with an apple to be expelled from paradise for disobeying God. That is why the naked body of Eve is associated with the shame of sin (Silberberg, 2016). On the

contrary, the birth of Venus with its radiant and naked body full of vitality is associated with giving the observer an essential idea about the appearance of beauty on earth. This painting shows a religious and mythological subject because in those time it was believed much in the power of the Greek Gods (N/A, 2009) The artist mixes the three elements of matter in his masterpiece, which are air, earth, and water that without many perspectives, but through the sea and the vegetation gives the feeling of depth in the picture. This work of art is basically the representation of myth the birth of the Venus of the Metamorphosis of Ovid wrote by the classical poet Homer, for this reason it gets it is name. We can see in the center the Goddess Venus on the sea in a great shell, to its right is Zephyr and Cloris, who are also part of the mythology, Zephyr is the god of the Wind and Cloris the goddess of the breeze to her left is the Hora Spring. Venus is painted naked with her long hair covering her intimate parts, while with his right arm tries to cover her chest, showing purity, which is also reflected in her gaze., She is on a shell because these always is related with the fertility in the woman. And also because Homer describes the birth of Venus from the genitals of the Uranus God, cut by his son Cronos and thrown to the sea in a shell and thrown by Zephyr’s breath. Hora waits for the goddess to dress her with a flowered cloak; the roses fall next to Venus, the tradition says that they arose with her. The painting has a triangle-shaped, symmetrical and dynamic composition, typical of the renaissance art, which allow Venus and its beauty to stand out, Botticelli transmits harmony, beauty and purity in his work of art. (Encyclopedia Britannica, 2010) From a personal perspective, the painting represents envy. The observer can perceive a hierarchy where the highest level is occupied by Venus. In this case, Venus represent the beauty and the perfection but appear two antagonist, the angels. They represent the envy because they feels resentment for the beauty of Venus while he feels inferior by the hierarchy

that she represents. All this arguments based in the expression of their faces that reflect dissatisfaction with her presence. The breath that he makes represents an attack on Venus but she remains calm. The woman to the left of Venus protects her from any harm she suffers. She is her protector. On the other hand, the landscape has more dark colors that the principals elements which causes us to focus in the principal figure. In conclusion, the painting exalts the beauty and the birth of a new life, the picture encloses a religious message because each element of the painting represents a Greek God. On the other hand, each detail can be observed because Botticelli worked with tempera technique to highlight the details. The painting is bathed in a golden glow that shows a world transformed by the beauty of Venus. All picture was painted using light and soft colors. The Birth of Venus is one of the most famous works of Botticelli, this work brings together the characteristics of the Renaissance style: it is narrative, exposing in this case a story drawn from mythology. It is realistic because the figures, and the objects are reproduced with the greatest care.

ACQUIRING ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE
2
Abstract Due to the high labor competition that exists today, the need to learn another language is very high. That is why the learning of the English language is high in the last decades since it is a global language. This reason has led to wanting to find a key to learning it, quickly and efficiently. Without forgetting that in the XXI century what is most tried to optimize is the time. It is for this reason that there are several methods of how to learn English. Among them the one that has attracted the most attention and caused concern in L2 learners has been: learning English while you sleep. The purpose of this essay is to clarify the effectiveness of this method, which is known as hypnopedia, offering to take advantage of time while sleeping and at the same time being a way to learn quickly. Also, this essay discusses the relationship between neuroplasticity and hypnopedia which leads to needing a state of relaxation and rest according to the age of each person so the brain can form synapses. These processes are very important for the development and communication of neurons, allowing the same the process of learning and memorization. Keywords: hypnopedia, neuroplasticity, synapses process, L2.
ACQUIRING ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE
3
Acquiring English as a Second Language. Learning While Sleeping? Imagine a world where you sleep and learn, a world where you make no effort to understand another language. Surely that would be the perfect world! Deciding what and how you want to learn sounds great. But, is this the right or appropriate way to learn a second language? According to Scott Young (2010) in his article entitled "Why Self-Educated Learners Often Come Up Short" mentions that "Many of my peers stopped learning French once their French classes finished" what it does deduce is that if you want to learn another language you need to find the proper way to do it. Not only because a new method of learning is mentioned, it means that this is the appropriate one. Hypnopedia can be considered a process of self-education since it is a method of learning in which you listen to recordings during rest time and the brain the next day remembers everything. In other words, one must have clear objectives and a strong discipline to be able to achieve it, being one of the requirements to become self-taught. However, there are many ways to learn languages very effectively, whether self-educating or attending classes led by a teacher, but to learn while you sleep is not the right thing to do, because the brain needs rest time to be able to create new connections in their neurons and process all the information acquired during the day. The latest discoveries are inscribed in what is called neuroplasticity, which is the ability of the brain to increase or decrease the number of neuronal branches and synapses, from the stimulus on the cerebral cortex. That is how it is understood that neuroplasticity is the structural basis of learning. In the article “Brain Plasticity: How learning changes your brain written by Pascale Michelon (2008) mentions that "the brain never stops changing through learning. Plasticity is the capacity of the brain to change with learning" when referring to changes in the brain the author refers to the changes caused by learning at the neural level, as these changes are made between the connections that exist between neurons
ACQUIRING ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE
4
allowing the brain to create new skills in certain parts of it. It is also explained that “Plasticity can also be observed in the brains of bilinguals. It looks like learning a second language is possible through functional changes in the brain: the left inferior parietal cortex is larger in bilingual brains than in monolingual brains” (Michelon, 2008). That's why you can say that creating new neural connections can improve the learning process and memorization in our brains. Another important aspect to consider is the synapse for the process of memorization, communication from the neuron to neuron in order to consolidate and collect all information acquired from a specific topic. In the article entitled "Biological factors that influence the learning process" written by Patricia Gómez (2012) she mentioned that the substrate of memory is the synapse, strengthening the electrical signal at the synapse contains a unit of information from which further development and increased dendritic synaptic growth, greater wealth of memory. In other words, the more effort we make to learn a physical skill or new knowledge, the stronger the synapses involved in that learning. That is to say the greater repetition of certain activity than the greater synapse in the neurons. But when do these processes occur? During the day or during the night? For the brain never stops functioning while we are alive, that is, even when we are sleeping the brain never stops synapsing. That is why sleep has been studied and classified in stages, of which one of the most important is the stage of REM (Rapid Eye Movement) which has a high metabolic capacity of the brain influencing the capacity of consolidation of information (memorization) and neuroplasticity of the brain. REM is the moment when the individual is more relaxed, although it is relatively easy to awaken it, hence its paradoxical name. During this phase the eyes move rapidly and the activity of brain neurons resembles that of when they are awake. Some research confirms the hypothesis that sleep is related to memory functions. However,
ACQUIRING ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE
5
the data collected are still insufficient to confirm that memory consolidation is dependent on REM sleep processes. However, because the sleep stage is very important in the life of the human being is why it is recommended to rest at least 6 hours a day. These hours vary according to the age of each person. It is advisable that the person before bedtime, should organize the space in which he intends to rest, turn off all electronic devices that may cause him some sound or distraction during his rest. As mentioned above, REM sleep is very light and can cause disorders if it is interrupted. Studies have shown that people who have had difficulty solving math, logic, or other problems during the day after a night of rest have been able to solve it effectively as mentioned in the article entitled “Learning in Your Sleep. We can infer that in order to be more productive we must rest the necessary time. For example in my own experience on certain occasions I have been one of those students who has sacrificed the hours of rest for wanting to learn a little more. Actually, I've never seen good results when I did not rest well. On the contrary, when I study until a certain time and I will rest, I feel more confident of being able to answer the exam. The learning method called hypnopedia "is a fancy name for sleep learning. In the mid-20th century serious researchers found positive results, and sleep-learning entered the popular consciousness" (N/A, 2012).This means that this method is effective. But do you really learn everything you want? To tell you the truth, it is not entirely effective because lying down and listening to an audio all night does not seem pleasant and up to a certain annoying part. Michael Lee tells us in his article called Hypnopaedia: Does Sleep Programming Really Work? that "a lot of people who encountered success in hypnopaedia often used the concept as an accompaniment to real actions" and I agree with him. Because I believe that in the case of wanting to learn another language you should during the day have practiced a certain way a new vocabulary and so during the night reproduce the audio while
ACQUIRING ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE
6
you sleep but with the same words learned. This method of learning is not a method that acts alone, I see it rather as an aid to the learning process. There are many people who believe that the time we spend sleeping is simply time wasted. That is why there have been some experiments to know what would be a good way to not spend this time just resting and rather do something productive. Giving as results the creation of hypnopedia. The process of learning while you sleep. This technique has not been completely refuted, but a little rejected as an effective method for learning another language. In the article called "Yes, you can Learn a Foreign Language in your Sleep, say Swiss Psychologists" written by James Vincent says that in an experiment made to 60 people of native German speaking they were made to learn some words of the Dutch language that they never before they had heard, through the hypnopedia method (2014). Half of the group is forced to stay awake listening to the new words in the Dutch language and the other half is forced to sleep listening to the new vocabulary. Testing the two groups yielded better results with the group that slept while listening to the words in the audio. Another study carried out on 20 children who had the habit of biting their nails. They were equally subdued while asleep, to hear a recording of the phrase "my fingernails have a terribly bitter taste" for repeated days. With the result that 40% of the children stopped biting their nails after the experiment. While the control group continued to bite their nails. Which supports the hypothesis that you can learn while you sleep. In the article called You Cannot Learn in Your Sleep? The author Trang Nguyen says that the term hypnopedia only "was adapted quickly in many works of literature and pop culture" which means that it is only a belief nothing real because he mentions that "the human body requires a certain amount of sleep In order to properly function "and not resting correctly you will not learn anything. Which again claims that the energy wastage that occurs in the brain during the day needs to
ACQUIRING ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE
7
be reincorporated into the rest hours. On the contrary, only the hours of rest that you want to take full advantage of would be a waste of time. In conclusion, there are many doubts about this method of learning because the research has not had enough data and the necessary evidence for this hypothesis to learn while you sleep is accepted. Although it was indicated that for the processes of synapses and of neuroplasticity that are realized in the brain for the learning and the memory are essential the hours of rest. But in the future I believe that this hypothesis can be accepted since the human being is in constant evolution, constantly changing and with much security I dare to say that we will be able to learn while we sleep. But for the time not, so long as it is not demonstrated, we must continue to rest the necessary hours and feed ourselves properly so that the learning-memory process is successful in our daily lives. Learning a new language requires these two processes (learning-memory) and as I could show it, these are developed through the process of synapse and neuroplasticity, so the best way to learn English as L2 would be to repeat a lot of vocabulary throughout the day and to reinforce listening to audios while we sleep, as long as we do not run any danger. However always returning to conventional methods is not a bad idea when you want to learn English as L2, among them are: travel to the place where the language is native, watching English movies among others. But no method will be good if you do not have the enthusiasm or interest to learn English. The key to learning is perseverance. Learning English takes time but has excellent benefits to be bilingual in this time.
