Dear Portfolio Reader:

My name is Sebastian Gallegos. I thank all the readers of my English Language Portfolio for taking the time to read the work of my level 6 semester. My English Language Portfolio consists of four essays with subjects of a great variety, a research project developed throughout the course of English and a group of reflections at the end of the course. My English Language Portfolio not only shows my work over four months of study, it also shows the progress and perseverance in obtaining new knowledge and forms of research. Every semester is different, but this was chaotic for me, because I began my third semester and sixth level English program. No semester is easy, all subjects deserve dedication and effort. Personally, I have always been responsible for my assignments, but this semester was the opposite. I had a large number of personal problems which took me a lot of time, but I was always responsible for delivering on time all my tasks. Especially with my English course since they all had a due date. At the beginning of the semester I was not really used to perform various tasks in English, or even remembered the structure to do it. I had to work a lot in the realization of the thesis statements and the correct use of citations to not make plagiarism, paraphrasing was difficult for me sometimes. I remembered that while giving the finishing touches to an English essay something happened to me which I do not know what it was, but confused me, I do not know if it was the stress of so much to

do and so many problems above, but I used the MLA rules instead of the APA standards. After this error, I put much more attention to the essays. I never made this mistake again and I improved a lot in my writing skills. My favorite was the Interpretative Essay in which I played a song that I like a lot and encouraged and inspired me a lot for the interpretation of the letter. I have greatly improved my writing in English as well as identifying the main ideas of the paragraphs in a reading. Nevertheless, I need to move forward in the English language to have no inconvenience when I receive all my university subjects in the same language. I have good communication in a conversation but I need to improve my oral presentations.. Thanks for reading my portfolio. I hope it will be entertaining for all of you, I put my best in each of the tests to be of your greatest pleasure. I am aware that I have become really good in the English language to correctly deal with my career.

The connection between the language and how we think Sebastian Gallegos Yachay Tech April 29, 2016

The connection between the language and how we think Throughout the years, evidence of development in a variety of languages in all the regions of the world can be seen, this has led to significant contribution into the communities and countries where those languages were developed. At present, there are thousands of languages and each one has great importance, both for society at large as well as particularly their respective speakers. Based on her main purpose, Gross appeals to logos with a widespread group of strong examples, in order to persuade her intended audience about the current evidences of differences between each language around the world. For instance, she points out that in Chinese you have to provide additional information of a person, when you are presenting a family member. This feel wandering between the connection and how we think and behave represents the current concern for which which she designed a study of “future languages” and “futureless languages”. In the article “How language can affect the way we think?” Jessica Gross inquiries into the connection between language and critical human thinking, especially

in making

economic decisions. “Future languages” distinguish between past, present and future, but “futureless languages” use the same phrasing to talk about events of yesterday, today or tomorrow. There are significant differences in economic decisions between English and Chinese, but in the wide field of the connection of languages and psychology are few fascinating examples. First, the navigation in Pormpuraawans which is an Australian Aboriginal community, they refer to an object as “northeast” or “southwest,” and she states: “speakers of such languages are remarkably good at staying oriented and keeping track of where they are, even in unfamiliar landscapes.”(Gross, 2013) Second, the evident blame reflected by English speakers. She explains that English speakers are more likely to remember who broke something and bent toward blame, than Spanish and Japanese speakers. Third, color among Zuñi and Russian speakers, they have different abilities to distinguish colors;

Zuñi can’t differentiate between yellow and orange but Russians have separate words for light blue and dark blue. Several studies about how languages influence into economic decisions have provided several examples of this connection. About 33% of the world’s languages discuss in absolute terms the space than relative ones used in English. On a research trip to Australia, the Pormpuraawans “not only knew instinctively in which direction they were facing, but also always arranged pictures in a temporal progression from east to west.”(Gross, 2013) An evident lifestyle example is when the author notes that in English, people often say that someone broke something even if it was an accident, but Spanish and Japanese speakers tend to say that the thing broke itself. In a study of Boroditsky, English speakers were much more likely to remember who accidentally did something wrong. Boroditsky argues: “there is a correlation between a focus on agents in English and our criminal-justice bent toward punishing transgressors rather than restituting victims.”(Gross, 2013) The third detrimental example is called “Color among Zuñi and Russian speakers”. Let us think about the following example: the ability to distinguish colors is not the same in all languages. The Zuñi speakers can not differentiate between yellow and orange, on the other hand, Russian speakers have separated words for light colors and dark colors. For example Russians says “goluboy” for light blue and “siniy” for dark blue. According with the study, Gross concludes that: in order to discriminate blues close to the goluboy/siniy threshold, they are better than English natives. Lastly, throughout her work the author’s attempts to establish the connection between languages and how we think and behave is manifested. Furthermore, the author analyses relations between the languages and the decisions at the moment of managing money. In the world, there are two big groups of languages, the “future languages” which distinguish the past, present and future, and the “futureless languages” which does not have different phrases

for yesterday, today or tomorrow events. Such as, the relation between languages and the way of thinking are really important in the moment of taking decisions, it is better to know the native language of each one of us and a universal foreign language, in order to be heard by all.

Child Poverty and Access to Education: Adding Up the Hidden Costs on the U.S.-Hispanic Community Sebastian Gallegos Yachay Tech May 19, 2016

Child Poverty and Access to Education: Adding Up the Hidden Costs on the U.S.Hispanic Community Throughout the years, evidence of industrial development in the United States which is mainly directed toward improvement in the quality of life of individual citizens can be seen, and there has been a constant and significant progress into the development of new techniques for a variety of purposes. However, Child poverty and education concerns still appear such as an upsetting social matter among American society, especially into the Hispanic population, even though the government has been trying to heal the split between its own economic growth and its educational development. The rapid progress into economic patterns gives huge advantages; nonetheless, this development has meant the growing of one of the most controversial social concerns, child poverty. In fact, the industrial advance involves a widespread group of changes which are not necessarily beneficial at all to the community. It is often said that an industrially developed country is directly related to the prosperity of each and every citizen. But what does it actually mean for an isolated population such as the Hispanic community and in what sense is it supposed to represent the key contributor to a real educational improvement into American society in the short and medium term?. According to the position of President Obama and his sympathizer thinkers, the recession represents the main obstacle to achieve a real and complex development which emerged since 2007 under the George W. Bush administration. This principle establishes to bolster the economy by lowering the current and future economic burden facing Americans between and specific strategy in which “the President has put forth an emphasis on health care, social security, and income security. The budget for the 2012 fiscal year allots to these areas 22.62, 20.04, and 14.48 percent of American tax dollars, respectively (4).

But is it logical?. In a statistical analysis showed that the poverty of children in the Hispanic population are outperforming children in both black and white populations, the study was conducted by the Pew Hispanic Center. This upsetting data reflects a possible root of the real problem as well as its solution. Let’s touch base in the annual budgets, for example, the 2012 fiscal year budget allows the 19.27 percent to national defense, nonetheless only the 2.77 percent of U.S. taxes to education and job training. Based on this data, we can realize that the real problem is established on national taxes distribution as well as the categorization of priorities that American society presented in general. Perhaps, a key missed into the child poverty could be originated from a current issue of the American Education System. Is it actually an American pattern to prioritize several aspects such as defense instead of education to its citizens? This controversial doubt does not affect only a Hispanic population; indeed it is a general concern for American citizens too. Candidates for the presidency in 2012 in the United States had different views on the issue, Ron Paul of Texas prefer homeschooling in addition to providing a tax credit for it. On the other hand, Gary Johnson of New Mexico wanted to stop funding education by eliminating the Department of Education, he said that the federal government is not responsible for providing education. Claiming that the competition will enhance the quality of education. (7). The reality of these distressing facts can be clearly identified by the specific and indisputable political and cultural thinking from political leaders, which at the same time reflects a huge group of citizens that unfortunately have adopted the same passive and delegated sort of thinking that tends to push Americans to a single choice, private education. This fact isolates who cannot contribute to themselves economically and in consequence this upsetting reality leaving the majority of the U.S. population without an appropriate educational preparation, especially in the

case of a minor population such us the Hispanic community which furthermore still reflects several discriminations from American Commissions as well as the population in general. Indeed, several studies reflects that “Child poverty is less severe for families with parents who have graduated college, so the focus needs to be on increasing the number of college graduates and creating jobs for those graduates in this cohort (8) , and this significant contribution is a reality not only for Hispanic population but for the American society too. The current economic problem is a social problem at the same time because the exasperation presented by an industrial generation for gaining financial security is breaking the logical and rational thinking about the right contributors for a real prosperity for both the present and future.

The best day of my life Sebastian Gallegos Yachay Tech June 16, 2016

The best day of my life This is a song titled "the best day of my life" and has at its author the American pop rock band "American Authors". I wanted to tell this story of how no matter what is going on, whether you are stuck at your job or having a bad day, there is always an escape from that, there is always an opportunity to heal the split between our goals and any possible drawback, and there is always a way to make any day the best day of your life. It is about escaping reality and entering into that dream world. Sometimes we do not want to give something up because we are afraid of moving on. We stay anchored in the past and then we just see our lives go by without us can do something. In this interpretation is important to note the video of the song as both goes hand in hand with a better understanding, not only hearing also visual. In the video, a man and his fluffy monster friend spend time drinking and getting lost in the streets and parks. It seems he has a lonely and boring life. All he has to make time go by is an imaginary friend and a bar. Is that the best day of his life? In verse one, the song start by saying that he had a dream so exhilarating that he felt as if he actually touched the clouds “I jumped so high, I touched the clouds”. He sings of how reached out and danced with monsters in his dreams “We danced with monsters through the night”. This can be used metaphorically to show that he danced with his enemies, or that he is going mad. In the pre-chorus he does not want to give up his dream of a place so happy by waking up and no one can blame him when one looks at the status of the world and he wants to forget it too, albeit temporarily “I’m never gonna look back…please don’t wake me now”. The chorus is one of the most important parts of the entire song, is the part that emphasizes the whole meaning of the song in a short sentence “This is gonna

be the best day of my life”. He says that this will be the best day of his life, meaning that he had a great day or the thought of dancing with monsters brightened up his day or lastly, that he is still asleep and dreaming of a great day. In verse two he sings of how he enjoyed the night with his friends until the sun crashed the party bringing it to an end. This means that he enjoys his dreams so much that the idea of living in the real world is not in the slightest bit appealing “I howled at the moon with friends, and then the sun came crashing in”. He brings out the point that in dreamland there are endless possibilities, where everything that people dream of can come true or be with whom one dreams about “But all the possibilities, no limits, just epiphanies”. And in the last part of the song, the bridge, he says that the dreams keep calling him and he does not want the party to end. He says that the dreams keep calling him and he does not want the party to end. If we live our life to the fullest, then every day can be the best day of our lives. It doesn´t really take much, just our attitude towards everything we do and say because never is enough when we are pushing ourselves to seek to reframe the way toward the achieving of our goals. We really only have and appreciate the present. We can only live one day at a time. It is up to us to make it worthwhile. Now is the time to ask yourself: How do I imagine the best day of my life? What makes me have a good day? How do I live every day?

Should be censorship practiced in school? Sebastian Gallegos Yachay Tech June 27, 2016

Should be censorship practiced in school? If we think of "censorship" broadly speaking, could be defined as the use of power about to control the free speech of others, and to maintain the established order. Situating today, think where the power is, who have it, who exercise it, what kind of power is at stake (material, symbolic, economic ...). The answers that emerge are very broad and could evoke different situations. Placing ourselves in the case of the United States where the first Amendment of the Constitution gives freedom of expression to all its citizens, but this itself is vulnerable in an everyday aspect of governance: censorship in school. Censorship appears daily during lessons and moments of playground, in more "hard" materials and artistic subjects. We can cite the case happened in Tinker v District. Des Moines School in 1969 in which: “The US Supreme Court ruled that Students have a First Amendment right to express their own ideas, at least if they do so in a way that does not fundamentally interfere with their school's functions(Petress K.). The case revolved around a couple of children between thirteen and fifteen years old, who decided to wear a black bracelet to school in protest at the Vietnam War and in support of Senator Robert F. Kennedy in his incentive to extend the truce in the war. At this moment the protest was not of importance to the school authorities, but when more schoolmates observed joined the protest were arrested and punished the boys with black bracelets. Within an institution, ideological state apparatus par excellence, many things happen invisibly in the eyes of those who pass. However, they do not perceive at first glance does not mean it will not happen. For this reason, many students look forward to an important moment in the school system to make themselves heard, the best time to

be heard is in speech.. For Bethel High School, Pierce County. Washington. a student gave a speech for the nomination of a wheelhouse of students to one of his companions. "The theme of the speech was replete sexual double meanings with metaphor, this was more suggestive than authority’s school and the student could allow was suspended from school”. (Petress K.) This clearly prohibited the use of vulgar and offensive terms in school, but when the expression is contributed by young college students and the subject of critical debate becomes sensitivity it is necessary the consent of all participants. And not that the case is resolved in court where the final decision is that only a judge makes a law in general but not specific to a particular case comply. Within the educational material that exists in schools in the United States a lot of books have been banned for containing racist material towards people of African descent or to Native Americans and how they were treated in the history of the nation. “The Yellow Medicine East School District [Minnesota] pulled the book: Little House on the Prairie on the complaint from a single parent that the book contains racially about Native Americans offensive materials.”(Petress K.) But perhaps the story has changed since the time it was written the book? They did not remain racial slurs towards all kinds of people than the United States, not only to African descent. Is best for school children and youth from schools grow up knowing the reality that exists in the history of a country, a nation, or the same planet? No need to hide the reality and let them know what the system wants it known, it may in the past have made mistakes but can teach the young that those mistakes were or are being reparatory need that these children are the change so that does not happen again the same error. We must say NO! to the existing control over free expression when a student is not respected in their difference, in their uniqueness; when a student is required to be who is not and speak in a language that is not its own; when a teacher is imposed a way

of seeing reality and is prohibited from talking about "certain things"; when the only correct answer is expected; when no matter the outcome and development; when administrative emergency outweigh the educational or human emergencies.

Ethics behind Modification of Human Embryos Sebastian Gallegos Yachay Tech July 7, 2016

Ethics behind Modification of Human Embryos INTRODUCTION "For the first time in history it has changed the entire genome of a human being from an embryo" (Campillo, 2015). This had a great impact when it came to light thanks to genetic engineering that claimed a breakthrough worldwide. The UK was the one who took the initiative to open the door to the genetic modification of embryos. In England the first modification will be made in order to better understand its development, the news was greeted with joy in the scientific community. The decision was made after researchers in China admitted to have altered the genes of human embryos to correct a blood disease a year ago. To introduce this report, let’s examine the definition and history of genetic engineering. Genetic engineering involves the manipulation of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid); this process is of a great importance, for the restriction of enzymes that are capable of recognizing a specific sequence in the DNA chain and break this location for using ligases entering a new DNA fragment to modify the sequence. In 1938 the experiment in which DNA fragment was entering the nucleus of a cell embryo batrachian, an enucleated oocyte, in order to verify the hypothesis that each of the cells of an early embryo contains all the instructions for the complete set of development for an individual. At that time there was no idea of what the DNA sequence was, but the idea was first applied successfully by Robert Briggs and Thomas King in 1952, in Philadelphia. The experiment was performed in the cells of embryonic frogs package where dissociation was achieved for tadpoles to be able to swim; after these successful tests were later conducted in adult animals. From the birth of genetic engineering, there have been many ethical issues that would cause a stir in the scientific community. To discuss these issues in a responsible manner, it must be clear that in referring to the embryo it does not indicate a fetus in human form. The embryo cell state comes after fertilization when the zygote, the union of the sperm and the egg begins to divide. This stage lasts until the eighth week, until which, it is just a mass of cells that will differentiate gradually. In this phase, scientists use the embryos that could not be implemented to carry out their experiments, test their hypotheses and perform the necessary tests.

The basic issue to be discussed is the "children a la carte". Taking into account the fact of a control population and a genetic predisposition as well as private, political and military interests. There continues to be great controversy over embryonic genetic modification. The problem has always been that once you start to research and experiment, who draws the line? On the other hand, who are you to tell someone that their suffering has no solution because of fear?

LITERATURE REVIEW The fact is quite clear that genetically modified embryos are now a reality, defining what this means for society and taking action on the consequences that this entails are obligations for all of us as society. Today researchers are providing much more versatile tools by applying new genetic modification techniques used in human embryonic stem cells for studying early human progress and disseminating their potential use in medicine. In this review we will define what methodologies are in force for genetic changes in human embryonic stem cells, with a literature included from the last years. Techniques for genetic modification of human ES cells TRANSFECTION â—? Electroporation: It is the most commonly used mechanical method to introduce DNA into a variety of cell types. This technique allows the passage of foreign DNA through pores formed transiently in the cell membrane caused by electrical impulses. The method has proved quite effective in mouse embryonic stem cells, but the first tests on human embryonic stem cells did not obtain the results expected to show a survival rate of about 1%. Despite the high rate of cell efficiency and relatively low mortality it is so far the only proven method to achieve homologous recombination. â—? Chemical reagents: in the first tests of transfection of human embryonic cells, three reagents commonly used in the transfection were used. There was no information on the rate of survival for human embryonic stem cells, but seen very little cell death following the protocol described.

VIRAL TRANSDUCTION Usually, this technique is more efficient and results in less damage to the transfection cells. Tests have been conducted with several viruses, to permit transient or stable expression of exogenous genes into embryonic stem cells. In transient expression, adenoviruses are effective in mouse embryonic stem cells if appropriate promoters are used.

NUCLEOFECTION It is a mechanical method for delivering DNA. The technique uses a combination of electrical current and solutions to specific cells and allows the direct introduction of plasmid into the nucleus, leading to a higher gene delivery. This technique has been applied to human cells and has been shown to be better than any other method of transfection. “The most successful application of mouse ES cells is perhaps the generation of knockout mice, by using mouse ES cells with ablated genes. The technique to achieve gene ablation in mouse ES cells, i.e. homologous recombination, has been brought to human ES cells with success using modified transfection methods.” (Zwaka and Thomson, 2003). Embryonic genetic modification has a circumstantial impact on the design of babies in the laboratory. There are a number of issues when dealing with the subject. Rather we talk about the features that should have the technology to be accepted, the medical and nonmedical techniques could be used in this question; what benefits, damages, likes and moral acceptability could be and how it influences the demographic and religious context in society. A study in a cultural sample of medical students in the United States describes the determinants of attitudes students have towards preimplantation human embryos. “Attitudes to “designer baby” technology were highly correlated across different applications (e.g., medical versus non-medical) and different dimensions of judgment (e.g., perceptions of benefits and harms, and preference for prohibition). High correlations between different dimensions of judgment have also been reported from the Eurobarometer surveys.” (Gaskell, 1997).

Gender, religion, and some extent, the American origin is three characteristics that predict attitudes by observing all applications and dimensions of judgment. “The acceptability of chromosome insertion is about as expected given the mix of medical and enhancement uses that was specified. Thus the respondents did not make a major distinction between acts (insertion of „good genes‟) and omissions (non-implantation of embryos with „bad genes‟).” (Meinsenberg, 2003). Thus moral objections could be playing an important role in the destruction of genetically modified embryos, though, nonreligious, ethical objections are most important to the rejection of germline engineering. From the study it was concluded that women were more likely to reject the use of technology and this was in relationship to their willingness to be more religious than men. Highly religious respondents were less likely to prefer being born genetically selected, less willing to use this procedure to their children, and more likely to opt for the ban. Inhibitions on active and aggressive interference with other people are present in all humans, and they are a cornerstone of moral intuitions in our species. At present, designer babies are still quite critical of but we have a clearer view of their advantages. Speaking germline we mean to the ovum and sperm are combined to form an embryo. When editing the DNA genes could eliminate certain diseases and pass these changes on to future generations, so it could save to the families from severe illnesses such as cystic fibrosis. Moreover, they could be integrated into the germline genes that provide lifelong protection against infections, Alzheimer's and aging effects if possible. CRISPR is a technique for modifying embryos discovered just 3 years ago, and is currently used by biologists in a generalized manner to alter either DNA or single letter sequence. The system has an accuracy never before seen, so it is expected to be a new method to create gene therapies. "The idea is that doctors can correct faulty genes directly, for example in the blood cells of a patient with sickle cell anemia. However, this type of gene therapy would not affect germ cells and a change in the DNA to future generations would not be transmitted. "(Regalado, 2015). For now, caution and ethical questions have been winning the game but all these statements were made before the existence of CRISPR so engineering of the germline any precision is now feasible. "We believe that new technologies allow genome editing use in individuals who are interested not only in vitro fertilization to have children, but also to have healthier children in

the event of a genetic disease in the family" (Regalado , 2015). It can ensure that CRISPR could eliminate the lethal effect of an ovum correcting these mutations before generating a child. For many scientists the progress that has taken over genetics and biotechnology shows that modifying the germ line will be inevitable in the coming years. Clearly, security issues would be the main concern before further testing could be conducted in rats, rabbits and monkeys probably to make sure that they are normal. But if the benefits are higher than the risks at the end, medicine decides to use it may happened exactly the same with in vitro fertilization when it appeared, no one knew whether the baby would be healthy at 50, but someone should dare to do . "This is historical medical advances that could be as important to this century as the vaccines they were for the past" (Regalado, 2015).

VIEWPOINT DISCUSSION I totally agree with the authors referenced in the literature review, as both authors attach great importance to the problems and controversial criticisms that exist on the subject and expose fully valid and well supported arguments. I always agreed with the genetic modification of human beings. For the same reason, do a search for sources of information on the subject thanks to which achieves much more information that unknown and so form a good specific viewpoint on each topic. I am in favor of medical or non-medical of GM human embryos, I think everyone would agree to save a baby from a fatal disease and thus a future family not lost his son and even better if you can alter the germline and eliminate hereditary diseases. On the other hand, there is the non-medical part of the genetic modification, with the aesthetic talking about designer babies. The only comment I have about it is, if we are able to choose which religion our son should be brought up, why can we not choose the type of eye color or hair that we want our son to have? Just imagine a case of many examples that can exist; an expectant mother African Americans who experienced racism for many years going to want that the unborn child does not go through the same thing that happened to her, if it was possible that her child was born with a lighter skin tone, I think that mother would choose that time only thinking of her son.

We must accept that the genetic modification of human embryos is now a reality and thus the criticism and opposition continue, they will be able to prevent the growth of the field of genetic engineering. As long as the benefits outweigh the risks, there will be new technologies and experiments; we must accept that if you do not take risks, you will not be able to save hundreds if not thousands of lives; nothing in life is 100% secure.

CONCLUSION We need to accept that genetically modified embryos are already a reality, decide what this means for society, and begin to act on it in a mature way. There are a variety of techniques for DNA modification but the most effective and recently discovered is CRISPR. Cultural and social aspects such as moral ethics and religion affect somehow genetic engineering. We are in an era of transformation and renewal, it is difficult to accept changes that often are needed, especially when it is for development and improvement of the human being. Do not think that is something distant. Perhaps your neighbor`s next child might be genetically modified.
