Luis Estalin Pilicita Guanochanga #30 Yachay Way Yachay Tech University Urcuqui, Imbabura, Ecuador December 8, 2016 Dear Portfolio Reader: My name is Luis Pilicita. I would like to thank you for all the attention you are giving to read my English portfolio. It is a collection of my best work in English, and it demonstrates all the abilities obtained in the English language program at Yachay Tech. For this reason, here I show you all the effort that I did in my level six English course. My portfolio has four essays that I wrote with the supervision of my English teacher. It have a research paper that I worked with curiosity and an enthusiasm to learn new things. I am sure that my portfolio will interesting for someone because I have done my essays about curious topics. I did all the essays with effort and sacrifice. I am very proud of my portfolio and I think that I am ready to continue my academic career in English. As a student, I have developed my knowledge of the English language since the beginning of the semester. When I start level six this semester, I was not responsible because I didn’t had a plan of study and always I left homework for the last minute. But with the passing of time, I learned to make a plan to organize my subjects and homework. In this way, I began to be more responsible and a better student. Another thing that I learned is to define priorities in my studies. This help me to become a better student in English and in other areas of my life. This taught me that study, do my homework, and be responsible; it is the most intelligent thing that I can do to improve my life as student and in the future in my life as a professional. I feel lucky to belong to Yachay Tech University, because it has given me the opportunity to learn the English language. The English language will be to me of much utility in the next semesters and subsequently in my working life because my goal is to become a scientist and English is the language of science. The English language is one of the languages spoken in the world. The mastery of the English language gives the opportunity to travel and see the world without barriers. I began the English program at level three in April of 2015 from that date until now, I have noticed a big change in my reading, writing, and speaking of Language English. In the level six of the English Language Program, I improve my performance on the presentations to do a better job in the presentations, I improve my level of vocabulary.
In addition to the presentations, I had to have a good and fluid pronunciation. Another thing I learned is to improve my writing and analysis of essays. I am ready to move out of the English Language Program at Yachay; this not mean that I am an expert in the domain of the English language. For this reason, I have to improve my communication, writing, reading, and about all the things I have to increase my vocabulary. These improvements are necessary, because I need good communication and good writing for my classes in future that will require the use of the English language. In my opinion, the English program is no one class more in the semester. The English program is the opportunity to improve and grow as student. In the English language program I have known magnificent teachers who I have guided and helped to improve my English. Also I have known many classmates, some of them have come to be good friends who have always been there to support me. Finally, I want to thank all the people who supported me in this difficult process, and I want to thank to the people for reading my portfolio. I made a great effort to done this portfolio, I hope you enjoy reading it. Sincerely, Luis Pilicita

COLLEGE DEGREE IS NOT MEANING OF SUCCESS

College degree is not meaning of success “Education is an admirable thing, but it is well to remember from time to time that nothing that is worth knowing can be taught”. (Wilde O.) George Leef is a director of research at the John W. Pope Center for Higher Education Policy. He studied at Carroll University in Wisconsin and Duke University Law School. He was teacher of business law, economics, and logic in the University of Northwood. He frequently make points of view about education and public politics in your page of Forbes. (Leef, G. 2013). According to Leef, having a college degree is not a synonym of find a good job or having success. These are three points to stand out. Education is expensive, productivity is more important, and the academic rigor and the labor market are more difficult. George said “After graduating, people do not have nothing to show for his college years but a piece of paper and lots of debt.” (2013). I am agree with this part of the article, since currently the university is very expensive. Many students have to pay for their studies and maintenance. There are methods to cover the costs generated by the university education: one of them is to get a scholarship which will allow the student to afford their expenses; for this the student needs to obtain the best marks as possible. In the University is difficult to maintain a scholarship. Another alternative is to request student loans. Productivity is more important, “the success always depended on personal performance rather than educational pedigree….. Going to college might increase a person’s productivity, but it’s neither necessary nor sufficient for that” (Leef, G. 2013). I am agree with this point of view because it has many factors in favor of productivity. One of this

facts is that employers not reward the workers for their college degree. They reward workers for their productivity. People have to take advantages of your skills. People that like to study have to make an effort and gain knowledge. The people that decide not studding have to obtain experience and improve their job. People that have a college degree received better salary people that don’t have a college degree. But don’t is true that people that have a college degree have more opportunities of obtain an employ. In the actuality exist some professional that cannot find job. A lot of competition in the labor market and the education are more difficult, George said “Conditions today, both with regard to college academic rigor and the labor market, are much different than they were 40 years ago.”(2013). I am agree because a problem at present is that the young people think that the best option to get a good future is to have a university degree. Due to this is that there are more people who decide to study, despite that the study is not of your personal interest. This is the main reason that there is so much demand in the labor market. Have many demand in the labor market and the professional people wait to find a job in their area of knowledge or in their domain. Whereas people that not have a college degree only wait to find an employment in any labor area. This article has several points which stands out, but not completely true statements that performs. George Leef said flatly that university education is not a good investment, this is partially false. A university degree does not give you the certainty of getting a good job, but increases the chances of it. The article also makes reference in them skills of them people, but if the ability of a person is study, this person conduct your work with passion and accordingly has greater possibility of have success.

The purpose of this article is to expose how today the professional labor market is, also presents the advantages and disadvantages associated with the obtaining of a university degree. It shows several points of view to the author are important and that will be of great interest to readers. The audience of this type of articles are usually parents of family that are concerned on the future of their children. Another large group of readers are young people who are not determined to still get a college degree. The credibility of the author is reliable since it professor who shows his point of view. The author is reliable that is impervious to political trends, social and cultural rights. The Organization of the article is quite good and easy of understand since exposed their ideas in order of importance. In addition to this the language used is formal. In conclusion, the points of view that George Leef gives to know are very specific. They are: education is expensive, productivity is more important, and the academic rigor and the labor market are more difficult. I am in favor of these three points of view that the cars proposed. From my perception these variables are very important in labor and professional development of the person. These critical points will help people to realize the strengths and the weaknesses of people, such as economic, sociological and cultural factors. Get a college degree not is the only way to have success, but is an easier way of get it. It all depends on the skills and the passion that people have towards the things that do.

Analysis of The Story of An Hour
Luis Pilicita
Yachay University of Experimental Technology and Research
Kate Chopin is the name of the author of “The story of an hour”. This story is about a woman. Louise, which was afflicted with heart trouble. She was is her house when she received a message; that message said that her husband Brently Mallard had died in an accident of train. She was sad for the new when Brently Mallaerd apened the door. Louise died by her heart disease. The story of an hour shows the suffering of a woman when her husband died and this is the same in the real life because the story shows a process of suffering, a process of meditation, and a process of acceptation. In a process of suffering when Luise received the message of the death of her husband, “she wept at once, wild sudden wild abandonment, in her sister’s arms” (Chopin, 1894). It is the same in real life because, received the news of the death of a family, always is difficult of accepting. Receive the news of loss of a family member is very hard. Receive the news of loss of a family member is difficult to accept news. The people usually begin to cry and be depressed. In the process of meditation, according to “The story of an hour”. Louise remembered the experiences that she and her husband had had throughout their marriage, she was watching the sky and she was thinking about what was still to come. People usually when they lose a family member try to get away from everything that is happening. When people lose a loved one try to find inner peace to be able to assimilate the situation According to Chapin in the story said “there would be no one to live for during those coming years; she would live for herself” (1894). Life continues for this reason, people that lost family have to accept their situation and continue. The loss of a loved one is hard but is no reason for the lives of their families’ stops. Always people has to recover from these circumstances.
In conclusion, the story is based in events of the real live. The story is interesting because it has a different ending of the expected. Is a story that occurs in a short period of time and it is a history that belongs to the tragic genre.

THE PERSISTENCE OF MEMORY
2
The Persistence of Memory “Surrealism is destructive, but it destroys only what it considers to be shackles limiting our vision.” -Salvador Dalí. The Persistence of Memory was born in a world where the surrealism was opening its own road. Also known as 'Soft Watches', this painting is a famous masterpiece created in 1931 by the Spanish painter Salvador Dalí. It has only 24.1 by 33cm; and currently it is in the MoMA, Museum of Modern Art, of New York. Dalí expressed his personality through his art. In fact, The Persistence of Memory is one of the most controversial works of art because of the surrealist style used by Dalí. This is visible in three ways: The way the author related the surrealism to all areas of his life, an evident influence of Sigmund Freud in the method of paranoiac-critical that Dalí used, and symbolism behind this painting about time and space influenced by Einstein's Theory of Relativity. Salvador Dalí is the most recognized representative of European surrealism born on May 11, 1904, in Figueres, Spain. He was extraordinary precocious artist; he would entered the world of to the world of painting Impressionism with only 12 years. Then he said “I will be a genius, and the world will admire me. I may be despised and misunderstood, but I’ll be a genius...” (C Jutge, 2005). In 1929, he meets Gala, his wife and muse; then painted his most important works where develops his obsessions: sex, soft and putrid state of matter. This works were: The Great Masturbator, The Enigma of Desire and The Persistence of Memory. Some art critics say The Persistence of Memory depicts a dream state, where "the distorted clocks don't have any power in the dream world and are melting away because of
THE PERSISTENCE OF MEMORY
3
that."(Shabi, 2013). Another peculiar detail is the way Dali uses light to communicate ideas. Dalí reflected his own life and thoughts in The Persistence of Memory as part of the surrealism. Dalí´s autobiographical material and childhood memories represent many times as ready interpreted symbolism that he used in his paintings to give to them a deeper meaning. In this case, his obsession about death, decomposition, and decay permeate enhances his closeness to psychoanalytic theories, and mixing it with his extravagant personality, he made his masterpiece: The persistence of memory (The Art Story, n.d.). Because of the understanding about the human mind Dalí was ready to release to the world his own soul in his paintings, in special in his masterpiece. Even, the name of his masterpiece was only sarcasm from Dalí to give to it painting a darker meaning, and it painting gave him the privilege of being recognized around the world. In addition, Dalí was the pioneer of the paranoid-critical method to represent his way of perceiving reality. It method have a huge influence of Freud's psychoanalysis, who developed in deeply the unconscious world what it is easily denoted in The persistence of memory. The whole ambition in the pictorial domain of Dalí is to materialize the images of his concrete irrationality with the most imperialist fury of precision (Dali, Salvador, and David Gascoyne, 1935). According to Martin Ries (2008), the deep perspective in this picture suggests time past, with the viewer deserted and lost in infinity. Thereby, this picture makes overcome the subconscious of viewers questioning what reality is, achieving countless interpretations for each one. For example, the time is the key to establish a relationship between the real

world and the irrational world through of the symbolic language of the subconscious, and it has been achieved as consequence of the paranoid-critical method.
Finally, the theory of the relativity of Einstein was a new form to see the world for Dali. The painting has a deep relationship with this theory because there is a constant symbolism on soft and melting watches in the painting. “The soft clocks are an unconscious symbol of the relativity of the time and of the space, that is to say, a surrealist meditation on the collapse of our concept of an established cosmic order.” (Ades, 1974). The theory of relativity states that there is no time that has universal validity. In this way, each of these three soft clocks indicates a different hour, between 6 and 7 o'clock in the afternoon, insinuating the relativity of the concept time. In addition, the clocks, such as memory, as his memory, is have softened by the passage of the time. Thus, everything is ephemeral and fleeting except the landscape and rocks of the cliff.
In conclusion, The Persistence of Memory is a very controversial painting due to various aspects such as the obsessions pursuing to Dalí because he reproduce his life and the way in which he perceives the life in his art. Another point taken is the influence of Sigmund Freud in the paranoiac-critical method; that makes to spectators overcome and explore their subconscious. The last point is that Dali has a perspective different about the time that agrees to the theory of the relativity, which says that the time not is a measure universal. Based on all those points before mentioned it is possible to have several interpretations from the painting. In this way, interpretation is relative by the landscape, the method paranoiac-critical, the perception of the reality, the step of the time and the immortality. Surely what Dali

wanted is that each one did his own interpretation according to his experiences and obsessions of his world inside through shapes and silhouettes unimaginable and with an informative content unmatched in The Persistence of Memory. References

Legalization of Drugs Improve the Society
Luis Pilicita
Yachay University of Experimental Technology and Research
Legalization of drugs improve the society “A prohibition law strikes a blow at the very principles upon which our government was founded” Abraham Lincoln. The legalization of drugs is a controversial issue behind of that there are political, social and economic interest. Drugs are one of the principal problems in society. Many countries try to eradicate drugs but no plan is effective. Furthermore, banning things goes against freedom. The legalization of drugs is the best way to have a safe society and combat crime because legalization can reduce racial segregation, reduce the criminal marker, and the actual laws to ban doesn’t work. Legalization of drugs reduce racial segregation. According to Dam Baum “mean while the growing cost of the drug war is now impossible to ignored billions of dollars wasted. Bloodshed in Latin America and on the streets of our cities, millions of lives destroyed; of very eight black man has been disenfranchised because of a felony conviction”(2016). It try to say that drug destroy society and incentivize the racial segregation in special to black people. The legalization of drugs change the ideology of people because if drugs are not banned, people that consume and sell drugs are more accepted in the society. An example of this is alcohol. Alcohol is a kind of drug that years before was banned and had bad thoughts to people that drunk. Drunk market is one of the best business in the world. The legalization of drugs reduce the criminal market. Portugal is a country that legalized the drugs and they have good results with this legalization “a study by the Portuguese police found an increase in opportunistic crimes and a reduction in premeditated and violent crimes”(Boun, 2016). This study shows that the legalization of drugs decrease the crimes that have relation with the crimes caused for the drugs. Legalization involves the creation of new laws governing the sale and consultation of drugs. In addition to this, the cost of drugs
decrease considerably longer to be legal production, transport, and sale drugs because easier to do and don’t break the laws. Nowadays, prohibition doesn’t work “if you fight a war for forty years and don’t win, you have to sit down and think about other things to do that night be more effective” (Boun, 2016). Many governments think in the opinion of legalize drugs. Chile began a legislative process to legalize both medical and recreational marijuana use and allow households to grow as many as six plants. if the addicted persons can produce their own drug the marketing of drug could be eradicated and the society will be safe. In conclusion, legalization of drugs is the best way to combat crime because, it can reduce racial segregation, reduce the criminal market, and finally the present laws to combat the drugs don’t work; for this reason the society needs do conscience and think that the legalization of drug is the best way to have a society more safe. This mean that the government doesn’t have to spend money to combat the crime of drugs. Society have to have better education in relation to drugs.

THE FOOD GENETICALLY MODIFIED
2 Abstract
The engineering genetic consists in modify, insert or delete material genetic in a body. This science can represent a great advance for the humanity. The production of food genetically modified can be of great help to solve problems as the hunger to level world. However, the handling genetic is an idea controversial that represents several benefits, but at the same time, presents a risk dangerous for the humanity. For this reason, many people are in accordance with the idea of this research regular. In this research shows advantages and disadvantages of the consumption of the food genetically modified. With research on the topic it is noted that the genetically modified food would be very useful with increased research and development.
Key words: Gen, DNA, Engineering Genetic, Organism Genetically Modified (GMO)
THE FOOD GENETICALLY MODIFIED
3
The food genetically modified promotes the advancement and development of the society Genetically modified organism (GMO) foods are feared and hated by environmentalists and the public alike. Yet the scientific assessment of GMOs is remarkably different. Every major scientific evaluation of GMO technology has concluded that GMOs are safe for human consumption and are a benefit to the environment. (Ramez Naam). The area of genetics is not a new theme for humans, since many years ago people have been selecting the best specimens of each species and with the purpose of improving the species. The idea of genetic modification consists in selecting the best genes in each species, in order to Transplant these in other organisms and in this way improve the species. Genetic engineering is a new science that consists on manipulating, removing or implanting the genetic material or DNA of living organisms. Transgenic foods are those that have been produced from a genetically engineered organism and have genes from another organism incorporated to produce the desired characteristics. At present they have more presence of foods from transgenic plants such as corn or soy. This science could provide immense benefits for humanity in many areas such as industry, medicine and agriculture. In the field of food, the genetic manipulation could improve and create new methods for treating diseases and leave from depending of the medicine, but at the same time, it represents a lot of risk if scientist not use these procedures properly. Therefore, many people agree with the idea that this research must be regulated. The idea of genetic manipulation is a subject of controversy, due to several points of view that exist in relation to genetic engineering. Thanks to the advances of the science, scientists have observed the potential of the manipulation of the genome in plants and animals. The consumption of genetically modified food promotes the

development of humanity and improves the life of the people. Three things essential for the production of foods genetically modified are the greater capacity of producing foods, the plants are stronger, and improves the health of the people. Literature Review Through the production and consumption of food genetically modified, the hunger of the world could be eradicated. The use of GMOs in plants and animals accelerates the process of growth and increases the production of the same. According to David Zilberman “for 2050 we would need to increase current food production by 70 percent…we would need to reallocate and change our crop production pattern” (2014). The food genetically modified provide the opportunity of increasing the production of food. Designed to enhance food production is to meet the demand of wind required by people. According to the United Nations, about 21,000 people die every day of hunger or hunger-related causes. This is one person every four seconds, it is children who die most often (2015). the system of production that use currently is insufficient to cover with the power global, with the step of the time the population human increase and will be affected by the lack of food. The food genetically modified can improve the production of food and treat of eradicating the hunger to level world. Since the creation of the agriculture and livestock, humans have used the selective sorting as a method to improve the species. The method consists in select the best specimen and use it to breed and improve the specie. Scientists using the same principle develop a method that let choose a specific gene of whatever specie and implement it in another organism. Of this form, the scientists can choose a gene that improves the yield in plants. In the animals they can implement a gene that accelerate the growth. There are some genes that allow plants grow in the

dry and salty land, withstand high and low temperatures, and tolerate insects, diseases and herbicides (Freedman, 2013). On the contrary, several scientists say that current technology is not safe enough for the production of genetically modified foods. You need to get more research and development on genetically modified foods to begin production in large quantities. Global research reveals that "38 countries in the world banning the trade and growing of genetically modified food, 28 of these 38 countries are in Europe, on the contrary only 28 countries allow the cultivation and commercialization of transgenic foods . "(Sukhoterina, 2016). In many countries of the world, this prohibits the production and sale of genetically modified foods, because several foods do not meet the standards required for human consumption, as it contains certain products considered to be harmful to health. An example of this is Zimbabwe, one of the most needy food. Reject a load of corn that comes from the United States that were sent as a donation. Zimbabwe rejected the charge that maize was genetically modified (NewsDay, 2016). Hundreds of people die each day from hunger and malnutrition. Genetically modified foods were created primarily for the purpose of eradicating hunger in the world. "GMOs provide a stable and efficient way to sustain enough crops to feed the growing population of people in the world" (Lombardo, 2015). In the world there is no law that this in the life of the people for this reason the arguments raised against the production of genetically modified food is invalid. An important aspect in the production of genetically modified food is the reduction of the use of pesticides in the production of food for human consumption. Now for the production of food it is common to use many pesticides and insecticides. These pesticides are harmful to health and it is not recommended to eat foods that contain pesticides. According to the World Health Organization, the use of genetically modified organisms can reduce the use of pesticides in crops
THE FOOD GENETICALLY MODIFIED
6
as it currently incorporates resistance to them before insects through the gene for the production of toxin found in the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) (2015). "Transgenic crops that have been changed with the Bt gene have shown resistance to insect pests, thus reducing the need to spray large quantities of synthetic pesticides" (Freedman, 2013). Genetically modified plants can eventually eradicate endemic plants from each zone. "Pollen from genetically modified plants is also contaminated. When this pollen is found around other plants, even things like grass or weeds, they cross pollinate Which may have "superweeds" that have the same resistance properties as crops "(Lombardo, 2015). Loss of plants is a factor affecting the world's biodiversity. Humans eating foods containing pesticides reduce their quality of life, as it reduces human health. Foods with pesticides are not rich in nutrients and this demonstrated that the years of life are directly related to the type of food of each person. For this reason, the production of genetically modified foods provide us with an opportunity to improve people's quality of life. Pesticides to others to be harmful to human health, cause damage to the environment, that is, they pollute the air we breathe. The use of pesticides in agriculture involves a large investment of money; This money can be optimized better, with the use of genetically modified platforms that are resistant to insects and pests. Consuming genetically modified foods can improve human health. Humans need have health in their lives to be productive in the society. The food we eat nowadays contains a lot of chemicals that are harmful to health, and for this reason several food lose nutrients. Several food genetically modified are one hundred percent free of chemical as pesticides and insecticides by which is recommended the consumption of these, but in addition to this several scientific are develop as implement vitamins and proteins to them food of consumption daily. An important
THE FOOD GENETICALLY MODIFIED

example of the potential of this technology is the ‘Golden Rice Project’…The strategy of the Golden Rice Project was to introduce the correct metabolic steps into rice endosperm to allow βcarotene synthesis” (Key, 2008). Genetic engineering is one of the sciences that is in full development. One of the main objectives is to improve the health of humans. For this reason the scientists who are dedicated to the research and development of this science are looking for ways to implement vitamins to food and try to remove the genes that cause the creation of fats. Several studies about the consumption of food genetically modified shows that large fragments of DNA of food there, are capable of transfer their genes directly in the blood of which consume this type of food. In this way, they showed that GM foods do not have the same behavior as a natural food (Benzon, 2014). This fragment can cause mutations in the human genotype or you can also create DNA recombinations. Due to this reason the use of organisms genetically modified still not is in process of implementation. Several organisms that are used for plant modification have no compatibility with the human body, which is why there is insufficient evidence to state that OMG can alter the DNA of humans. This argument is partly false because traces of modified genes have been found in the blood but they are not compatible or detrimental to human health. On the other hand several GM foods can provide essential vitamins for humans. The consumption of genetically modified foods in the future can give us similar effects to the medicines but without the necessity to consume them separately, it improves the feeding and at the same time it improves its way of life. In addition, other advantages deriving from the production of genetically modified foods is that they generate more income for farmers. Agriculture is one of the businesses with more risk. Agriculture is affected by the climate, pests, the Sun, among others for this reason farmers are at high risk of losing their crops. Due to these factors the farmers need to protect their crops

with plagiarized, herbicides, insecticides, etc. These chemicals are a great investment for the farmer; with the use of plants genetically modified can decrease the use of pesticides and in this way reduce the cost of production. Several plants genetically modified already have with genes that les allows resist climates varied and intense, besides to resist pests (Zilberman, 2014). Of this way the food will be of more easy access and them people may access and dispose of them with more ease; so decreasing bad nutrition in the world. Conclusion In conclusion, genetically modified foods give us an opportunity to improve the techniques used for food production. Genetically modified foods allow us to think about the future. The development and research of this type of food will help us feed more people in the world, stop using chemicals, pesticides, etc. Finally take care of our health. Genetically modified foods are a useful tool but unfortunately still under development and need much research even to be safe enough for human consumption, but there are several foods that are already produced under the use of transgenic seeds, that gives good yield and greater profit to farmers. For this reason, it is important to continue with the investigation of the genetic manipulation; But the first scientific have that establish standards for the study and development of the manipulation genetic. Now genetically modified foods are not very accepted by that humanity does not conceive the idea of producing food in a laboratory. With the passage of time humanity to the food genetically modified, will see as an alternative to problems related to food.
