All the homework that she did in this four months and how she achieve that in the middle of night with the mix of several coffee and her capacity to do the things in the last minute. So sit down, relax and enjoy Mayra’s experience in level 6 of English. Hello, my name is Mayra Jiménez and I am 20 years old. I am a student of level 6-013 and my teacher is Hamilton Quezada. I hope that you enjoy this little portfolio that I made during this semester in my level 6 of English. First of all I am going to explain how was my English course in sense of studies, then I will talk about funny moments that I keep in my mind and finally I will narrate what I learned in this four months. All of these stories will begin with questions. So, how were the classes in level 6? At the beginning of the course my teacher send us to make a presentation about our life and that was something that I really like because for me that means that the teacher wants to know who were his students. What was the most difficult homework in level 6? The final research paper was the most difficult homework because it has 5 pages and that took me like two weeks to finish it. This homework was the link of all the homework that we did across the course, for example we used: Project Proposals, Thesis, Annotated Bibliography and Opposing viewpoints and

Refutation. First we did an outline and a draft essay because we need to have very clear the idea of it. What was something that touches your heart in this class? Something that I really like was the day of Joseph’ birthday because I bought a little cake and I took it to the class, and that was something that I didn’t plan. That day I arrive at 5h15 pm, and I surprise everyone with that little cake because nobody expect that then everyone eat a piece of cake and we sang tee happy birthday song. That day was really different and special for all of us, I think. Do you feel good with your classmates and teacher? Yes, I do. I really like the people that I meet there because the majority of them were in the same classes like I was, so it was easier to be friend of them in the English class. About my teacher, I think he really works hard, he did something that I really liked and that was create a video about one class, he explain everything in that video and that was an excellent idea. Also he always tries to transmit the idea of “work hard” and I feel that is a good message for having it inside our minds. To sum up, level 6 of English was difficult for me if we talk about writing but if we talk about speaking I think that I really achieve the goals in that skill. I like my classmates and my teacher. And you will see my progress in all the assignments that are here in my portfolio. Thanks for reading this. Good luck.

Don’t buy the Hype, college Education is not an investment. Mayra Jiménez Yachay Tech English – Level 006 Hamilton Quezada 10/05/2016

George Leef create a commentary talking about Education, his article entitled “Don’t buy the hype, College Education is not an investment” has enough resources to give a real idea of how has been changing the schooling in the 20 century.

The researcher emphasizes how and in what way he is against of dozens of studies that supports in favor of education. Actual information affirms how the statistics about college degrees and earning of working has been changing in this last 40 years; also mention the differences between college academic rigor and the labor market. Now, having a degree is not enough for get a good job, because the employers need productivity and a lot of years of experience.

I strongly agree with George Leef and how he uses his personal experience in this specific topic about college education. There are three main points that are going to be explained in this response essay: College education is not an investment, examples of students that are o are not in college and the last one is how a degree affect to get a job. First point, College Education is not an investment. Academically Adrift, is a book written by Richard Arum and Josipa Roksa, explains how having a degree doesn’t add anything to their capital, that is another idea of why I accept the total idea of college education is not an investment and it is showed every day and in diary life when a lot of graduates doesn’t find any job and for that reason they had to work in some area that doesn’t have any relation with their studies.

Second point, examples of students who are or are not in the college. Student A, B and C are examples that exist in Yachay Tech. Many of the students that are like student B doesn’t know if they are studying what they really want in my case I didn’t know it until this semester that I was in the correct place and in the correct time. Furthermore, they are a lot of people (student A) that are willing to get the best score and the best knowledge from college and surely they are going to obtain all of what they want. The last case is student C, from my

own experience I had meet people who left the college and now is doing what they really want and doesn’t have any relation with studying a degree.

The last point, how does a title affect to get a good job? George said: “College itself isn’t an investment, just one way of increasing your value.”(George, 2013). Those words sum up all the essay because explain exactly what does the college in the present. Exist hundreds and hundreds of Ecuadorians that doesn’t have any job the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INEC) “Ecuador recorded a national unemployment rate of 5.7%. This means that in the country there are 448.990 unemployed.”(2016, April 15) To sum up, college education is not an investment and the three main points are enough to get the total idea of how the world has been changing in this specific topic. Education is not equal than years before and we should see a degree just like a value for our curriculum vitae.

Literary Analysis

Literary Analysis

The story of an Hour by Kate Chopin Imagine this scenery: A room, a staircase and a front door, every day the same view since you got married, something like a jail. Katie Chopin adapts her story in that “jail” and represents the life of the women in the 18th century, Mrs Mallard is the main character in the story and she shows specially two point of her entire life. One point is about chauvinism that she had to live in silence, and the second point talks about the freedom that she feels when she realized that her husband was dead. The first point, chauvinism. Since the first line, Chopin tries to let everybody know that Mrs Mallard was like a property of her husband because she doesn’t use the real name of Mrs Mallard until her sister screams her to get out of the room. The levels in what level was the man so with the woman. Then the other characters were: her husband’s friend Richard and her sister Josephine, this obviously represents that a wife just can hang out with her family or people related directly with the husband. On the other hand, women were just used to take care of the house and take care of the children, cook for everyone and do the dishes. Woman was practically a slave and even worst because they had to enjoy it. These little things were implicit in the short story. We can imagine Louse doing that every day of her life since she got married with Brantley. The second point is about freedom. This topic is more surprising than chauvinism because this feeling was entirely unknown by women. Louise thought for the first time by herself, and her first words were: “free, free, free” (Chopin, 1894). She felt her soul and her body like something new, and amazing. In that moment her face was rather indicate her a suspension of intelligent thought”, that means that in her whole like she couldn’t analyse, decide and think

by her own. After a few moments of that strong feeling, all the thoughts were like: she would live for herself, there would not power that can control her, etc. in that part of the story, Chopin wants to show what was in the head of every woman. Also, there is a setting that means a lot, the open window when Louise was alone. She was the same open window but with different eyes and that is because in that specific moment she was looking at every tree, bird and cloud with her own soul, body and head. In conclusion, every setting that was in Chopin’s story represents perfectly the reality of the women in the 18th century. These two points were the real and the unreal things that happened across this short story. Chauvinism was worst in 18th century, but until 21st century is a reality in a lot of places around the world and freedom is a strong topic for women because is something that we were and were fighting for. Date: 15 / 11/ 2016 Class: Level 6-0013 INTERPRETATION ESSAY In the episode "The D'oh-cial Network", the director, Chris Clements and the screenwriter J. Stewart Burns describes social media, facebook, because they tried to show the impact that facebook have had since it came out in 2006 and the importance that it had in the world. Then they used characters from all ages to show how facebook is involved in every step of the life that means since you are child, teenager, adult or ancient. All begin with a poor ability of Lisa to make friends and that is the main reason for why "springface" was created. Then, the addiction for this app creates a lot of situations like: traffic accidents, avoid every kind of human touch, etc.

J.Stewart Burns, the screenwriter, at the beginning of the episodie wants to transmit the reasons for why “Springface” was created, in the reality Facebook was created by Mark Zuckzerberg and his reasons were: (1)share information, (2) interaction inside the University, (3) privacy and (4)business. Instead of that in the episode Liza creates “Springface” because she wants to make friends and also because she feels alone and that would be a good idea for sharing your feelings and what is happening in your life.

Another good reason is proposed by the episode. In this case, Lisa Simpson is in a school park with some of her "springface friends". She is trying to talk with them, but no one answers or pays attention what she says. In this scene the author shows a false sense of connection that the social networks produce on people who use it because these people forget the real world and they can not distinguish the real meaningful of a relationship in the real world.

Once using social networks, people tend to want a lot of followers and friends, and in some way it produces the false illusion of being popular, something that is not necessarily true in real life. Friends mean support, love, and company: they help us overcome loneliness. One of the fears that people have in the Present is being lonely, for this reason it is not weird that people search for friends anywhere, including social networks.

Keeping with the illusion of having a lot of friends by adding people on social networks, we could realize it is an illusion when having problems or, in general, simply needing a friend in front of us. There is a lot of people that have thousands of friends and followers, but sometimes in real life, they do not have anyone very close whom they can share personal interests with. When needing someone, a person would have much less people to call than friends or followers, as in the end, at the moment we enter a social network we know that the people we add practically stay in a digital place.

One of the direct consequences of entering a social network is that we start being a part of something bigger than ourselves. Joining a group goes in the same line as having friends: people could overcome loneliness by having a distraction or being an active part of something related to other people. Being part of a group means to be accepted and share

common things, in such a way that people could see that they are not so alone; but is it really true? And is entering a social network really something helpful for us or for the world in that sense?

The bad uses of the social networks also involve when they are used. Many people do not distinguish when they should use it. It is not easy to agree about when is the right moment. It depends of the decision of each one, but there are many situations that everyone must to consider before to use social networks. Some specific situation that social networks put in danger user’s life or the society in general are prohibited by laws. Many examples are exposed in the episode, one of them is in a scene where Homero is driving a car and his family are passengers. He is modifying his state in a social network While he is driving. After that, he runs over an old man. In this example, the author puts in evidence one of the most common irresponsible attitudes of social networks users.

On the other hand, social networks are used in order to share pictures, documents, some words or just know about others. Recently, “Facebook have launched a different way to share videos with others. Their users can transmit in live all that they are recording in that moment. This is a good tool that in many cases is used in a wrong way. People use it for transmit tragedies of others. As a critique of that, in the chapter there are some firefighters in a fire. They are taking photos during the fire and they are uploaded the photos to the social network. They are not doing their work and they are not concentrated in what they really have to do.

Even that all critiques during the chapter are parodies of people who use social networks, many of these examples presented are not so far from reality. Social networks have connected

the world, but their wrong uses have created many issues in the society. Some problems have been accidents, disagreements, bullying, etc. We need to reconsidered the purpose of social networks. It is necessary rise awareness in the society in order to create responsible people of the uses of social networks. And this is possible putting in evidence their bad habits using social networks.

Argumentation Essay

Argumentation Essay

Why mandarin won’t be a Lingua Franca In 2014, Andrés Martinez’s “Why Mandarin won’t be a lingua franca”, was published by the magazine TIME. In this article Martinez discusses the main reasons how English is a good lingua franca. His necessary to understand that lingua franca is a language used for communication between grasp of people who speak different languages. For that reasons, in the world of business English is used as lingua franca. So, Mandarin is not a good language for been used at a lingua franca because already exist one. There are already three main points to defend English as lingua franca: English is the language of technologies, English is a neutral language and English is neutral for politics. Certainly, mandarin, Chinese language has a lot of good arguments to be the new lingua franca like: linguistic, economic, cultural and political arguments. Instead of that, English is a language that an estimated of two billion people speak it functional and the majority of them are not native English speakers. Then it is a fact that English is the language of technologies because already all the games, movies, etc. were made on that language. It is important to say that English is more neutral if the topic is politics. Also, French is a language that had a lot of opportunities to become a lingua franca because of the story and its power around the world but, the French community had once placed that English is perfect for global operations.

To sum up, even French or mandarin is languages that are capable to become the new lingua franca. It would be a reality in the near future and it doesn’t matter if China has a power status in the world, it doesn’t matter if Japan, Korea, China etc. surpasses the English countries in population and economics power English is the actual and future lingua franca and there is going to be a lot of reasons and arguments to defend it.
