Dear Reader My name is Richard Zapata. Thank you very much for reading my portfolio. This file contains some assignment and tasks. These tasks demonstrate the skills developed in the sixth level of English at Yachay University. This portfolio contains four works. I am very proud of my abilities that demonstrate my level of studies in the language to continue my education in the School of Physics. As a student I feel that my skills in language and in the use of language have grown. Also thanks to the English program, I developmented my confidence and also I learned good habits in the planning of my tasks. During the semester I have been able to practice and use the lessons in my student life to write correctly. The topics covered in this course have served me to be more fluent in expressing my ideas. A significant improvement in performance management is time to do a role. Another success in terms of my performance in usage the language to communicate. On the other hand, I can see the increase in my ability over time since my work has evolved. It is also important to note that my management vocabulary and expression are constantly growing thanks to the skills acquired in the English program. A clear example of my skills acquired throughout the English course is able to make a well-structured essay. I have succeeded in incorporating the English language into my daily life. Today, I receive classes in English in school of physics for this reason I can take full advantage of and link ideas and vocabulary. Previously, I had difficulty reading and understanding a document in English but now I understand and read more easily. A subtle suggestion to the current English program is to change the literary analysis in the study curricula by reading scientific essays. The above activity would help increase technical language and benefit students in higher education. It would also help the student to argue and object. In this way, the English program would contribute to the profecional formation of the students of Yachay Tech. Daily activities like '' Warm Up '' in my opinion are very good for sharing ideas and curious perspectives of my classmates. The research essay task was one of the favorites for me because in this activity I was able to look into investigating topics that interested me. However, I realize that learning a language implies capturing the culture and way of thinking of native speakers in the language. I also feel that I finally have the basic tools to be able to continue learning and to progress in English. I am very clear that I do not yet have an extremely high level in the language but I have the tools to increase my language skills. I say goodbye and thank you for reading my portfolio. I am very pleased to share my ideas and thoughts with you. I also hope you enjoy reading my portfolio. I am proud of my

growth in personal responsibility because it has helped me become a better student and a better English language user. Even though I've grown and am ready to move out of the English Language Program at Yachay, I will never stop learning and practicing English. I want to become an even better student.

Sincerely Richard Zapata

Ethics intrinsic human ally for a better future Richard Zapata Level 6 – 002) Yachay Tech University October 2nd, 2016

Ethics intrinsic human ally for a better future

Ethics is an agent of change which influences the behavior of people to make good decisions. Global ethics involves a profound change in public institutions that leading each country. Ethics also governs the sustainable development of science and technology. It is important to consider the lack of ethical decision-making in science and global politics. Ethics is implicit in our life, for this reason, we must rediscover it to build on its strengths. First, public institutions must make a commitment to make a positive change. According to Gordon Brown's video Global ethic vs. national interest "global ethics links ideals of patriotism and equality"(Brown,2009). Patriotism is thought that links a person to their homeland. This concept encourages people to have a sense of belonging. On the other hand, the concept of equality is to give people the same rights and opportunities. These ideals should help governments to make good decisions but this does not happen. We must also talk about the idea of global citizenly. This idea can be the start to promote the ideals of change around the world. This new concept in the organization of the planet makes us all the inhabitants of planet (PP) similar rights and obligations. For this reason, governments should restructure its short- and long-term to solve key problems such as poverty, security and education. Moreover, the ethical governs the development and implementation of scientific discoveries. Scientists have the power to change the balance of power in the world. Gordon Brown discusses technological benefits that can help coordinate efforts to help people (Brown,2009). Knowledge is power and provides economic stability to a country. A robust economy creates a competitive and high quality standards of society. Nowadays, it is

expensive to acquire and generate knowledge. A determining factor in the useful life of the oenological objects is compatibility. A scientist working in the technology area should consider the economic and social implications. When considering a country that imports technology and does not have the ability to constantly renew electronic equipment for hospitals and telecommunications. You also need to consider more critical as health aspects. In this area, also focuses the ethics and morals of the doctors or researchers. We can talk about drugs low production cost but with high demand around the world. Examples of essential medicines are vaccines and antibiotics. The lack of drugs discussed above can trigger serious diseases that can be avoided. There may be better and cheaper basic medicines to solvent these needs but not being profitable ever be available to those who really need. For this reason, it is necessary that scientists think about the ethical and moral implications of their findings. Finally, it is necessary to know the lack of ethics in politics and in science can affect society. For this reason it is necessary not to make the same mistakes. It is also necessary to remember that we are all political beings and that lives are affected by political deities. For this reason the governed have laws, regulations and a work ethic to make good decisions. (Brown, 2009). Also the lack of ethics in such sensitive areas as medicine can cause misfortunes. A clear example is the story in the article Andrew Wakefield case highlights the importance of ethics in science. Sarah Boseley discussing about "the lack of ethics in medical trials scientifically Dr. Andrew Wakefield" (Boseley,2010). World history is full of examples of bad political decisions. One of the worst is the Nazi massacre of Jewish communities in the Second World War. This example represents the two points of view that I want to discuss. The first view is the political fanaticism at that time by Adolf Hitler. Adolf was president of the Nazi party. He was an excellent speaker that caught the patriotic fervor of the German

people but their lack of ethics framework history. Others would speak of human rights abuses committed by his party. What is really important is to never let them take the political power of a nation to be unethical and moral. The second point of view, I want back to the addition of great scientific minds to Kaiser Wilhelm Society. This society would be an inexhaustible source of intellectuals to the University of Berlin. Nazi influence was noted in this institution and pollute the minds of scientists who later end up creating war machines, technology implementation and questionable medical experiments. It is clear that the lack of ethics emerged at that time. The Second World War could have been shorter if the German scientists had practiced moral in their actions. For this reason, it is important to revive the ideals and ethics to govern the behavior of influential beings in our society. In conclusion, ethics governs our behavior subtly and decision-making. We can see the ethical ideals of patriotism and equality. These ideals are strengths of people to create positive change in our lives. Also the ethical guide the implementation of scientific developments. The most influential people in our society should have a good ethical and moral sense to pursue common benefit. It is important to know the total lack of this intrinsic sense of the human being in our society to not make the same mistakes.

“The Starry Night” Ángel Gabriel Villacreses Ponce Milton Francisco Procel Mayacela Richard Santiago Zapata Gavilanes Yachay Tech University November 16, 2016

Vincent Willem van Gogh was born in Zundert, Netherlands on 30 March 1853. He is one of the most important painters of history and one of the main exponents of postimpressionism. Since he was a child he had a great inclination towards drawing, so he began to learn for himself. He managed to move forward thanks to the unconditional support of his younger brother Theo who helped him financially and disinterestedly. The great relationship between them was documented through the letters that are preserved (Editors 2015). In life Van Gogh made more 900 paintings and more than 1600 drawings. When moving to France, he worked in multiple art galleries where he acquired a unique and recognized style, which allowed him to carry out more colorful and striking works. Despite his magnificent paintings, Van Gogh did not have an easy life due to psychiatric problems. He suffered from mental problems like epilepsy, psychotic attacks, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and delusions. But these mental problems did not become apparent until 1888, at the age of 35 years, when voluntarily decided to hospitalize in an asylum called Saint-Remy-de-Provence. It is believed that the mental illness he had influenced his paintings. But critics like Robert Hughes, claims that the works were done under complete control of his mind, since Van Gogh never painted when he was sick (Naifeh,2011).

One of his epileptic episodes caused him to cut off a part of his ear and give it to a woman as a gift (Naifeh,2011). A year later, at the age of 37 years he died by a gun bullet; The causes are unknown, it is not known whether it was a suicide or an involuntary homicide. Only one of all his paintings, was sold when he was alive, since the quality of his pictures were recognized after his death. In the subsequent period it was very successful, so much that it was an important influence in the works of other great painters of 20th century (McQuillan 1989). One of his most famous paintings is The Starry Night which is a painting that was

made during his voluntary internment in the psychiatric hospital, At the time of PostImpressionism, specifically in 1889, a year before his death. This work was painted in oil on canvas, with a measurement of 74 x 92 cm, which is exhibited at the Moma Art Museum in New York (Naifeh,2011). The starry night a canvas painted during Van Gogh's stay at Saint-Remy-deProvedence. This outstanding painting is the only one of the collection "The Wheat Field"(Soto,1889). This painting is particular because it is the only one set at night. The creativity and vision of the artist was developed in different environments and climatic conditions. The development of the artist's paintings carried numerous sketches in ink or charcoal on paper. This process creation of the artist finally ends in shaping the sketch on canvas. When talking about The Starry Night it is necessary to identify the basic elements of the painting. First, the background of the picture contains the mountains of Saint-Remy. It emphasizes the form of the mountains accompanied with a trail of clouds. Also we can see next a small town where we can distinguish a church (Boite,1984). Secondly, on the left side of the painting we can see the shadow of a cypress (Soto,1889). Thirdly, we can see a starry night sky. This sky contains eleven stars distributed in the upper right part of the painting. We can also see the moon in the upper right corner corner of the painting (Boite,1984). Finally, right in the middle of the picture you can see a wait in light colors that possibly represents a galaxy or a comet (Boite,1984). After enumerating the main elements of the painting. It is important to emphasize the authenticity of the previously mentioned elements. For this we can separate the elements into two groups. The first group are real elements that are modified to achieve an impressionist style (Caldarone,2010). On the other hand we have elements added that are a creation of the artist and demonstrates his point of view on painting.

The last group consists of the moon, the galaxy or comet and the stars in the night sky (Boite,1984). In the first time when it can analyze the piece of art. It can perceive comfort and calm. At the moment of seeing the parts of "the starry night". It can observe the spirals in the dark sky of the night. The spirals hug together and dance in the sky. It transmits the sensation of movement like that the sky has life and this is the reason because these are the most striking in the painting. Next to these amazing spirals It can observe stars and the moon with a exaggerate halo and colors simulate the impression of being the sun. Furthermore, many people say that the structure of stars represents a constellation. Also it's observe a big shadow in front landscape. In the first moment looks like fire shadow but analyzing it's known that it is a tree. The tree gives the contrast for connecting the sky with the ground. On the ground there is a little town. The town has a church that represents that is a town self-sufficient. The town was draw with opaque colors that transmit tranquility and the lights on in the houses transmit to observer a feeling of nostalgia. Vincent painting is an amazing piece of art. It represents for author mystical approach to nature and its deep vital anguish because this was a difficult time for the artist then try develop his feelings. For example, he drew the painting “the starry night after cut his ear into madness attack and this painting was not appreciated by Vincent Van Gogh and it was sold cheaply. The people that bought the painting became wealthy people. In conclusion, the author only sent tranquility and calm as principal feelings. When it's see the picture, it's can felt amazement for some people has an amazing talent. Furthermore, the painting inspires to continue searching new kinds of art and paintings. The painter like him always have a place in the history and the people should to thank them because they are formed the world as it is today and they are unique in the world .

Argumentative Essay

Argumentative Essay Language affect the ethics and morality. Recent studies have focused on how people reaction when take hard decision. There was many experiments for studying how people are confronted with moral dilemmas. Also in others experiments, the volunteers were to forced taking moral verdicts. For other hand, the participants reverted the interactions between languages and emotional associations when the people learned a new language. There are strong evidence showing the relationships between the morality, ethics and language. Firstly, there are a experiment by Albert Costa in 2014. The experiment involve a volunteer were presented a moral dilemma. Volunteers must make the decision to save people to avoid being run over. The trolley is careening toward a group of people. But the volunteer is hypothetically forced to kill one person in order to save others. The result of experiments showing than 20% of respondents shore the sacrificial person. Also, both the native language volunteers take the same decision are to about 50%. Finally, the results for foreign and native speakers showing that the direct relation between People who made a decision and people using language (Sedivy,2016). Secondly, in experiment of Catherine Harris. She show a evidence for visceral response that a native language can provoke. This experiment used a electrical conductivity for measuring the emotion the volunteers. The experiments consisted in than the native speaker analyzed diferentes types of word with connotations means. the word used to have neutral meaning for example table or taboo word how for example shit(Sedivy,2016). The native speakers responses heightened arousal for taboo words compared to neutral words but the foreign speakers responded very mildly to both words. This results showing the connection between the emotional reaction and the visceral effect in the foreign speakers. The damage is in ventromedial prefrontal cortex than it is involved in emotional responding. In conclusion, the emotional interaction and the decisions are linked. The first reason is when a people may need to takes a decision with a moral and ethics effects this decision have directly relation with the language. The second reason is when people learn other language this people need to association

with feelings. This association involve a visceral response than affects the decision takes on a moral dilemma. Therefore language influences the decisions we make.

Research Paper

Premeditated reduction of the lifetime of technological products Richard S. Zapata Yachay Tech University

The next review work aims to analyze the techniques of obsolescence used by large companies to generate benefits at the expense of reducing the useful life of articles. We will briefly discuss techniques and strategies of obsolescence. The effect of obsolescence techniques on consumers is questioned and how they influence the way they behave. It will also address the economic and moral implications that affect consumers. On the other hand, clear examples of obsolescence that have occurred throughout the history will be provided. The examples and references cited have a high degree of relevance and come from reliable sources of information. A third part will discuss the environmental implications of excessive industrial production. Finally, it will give a critical view on consumption and planned obsolescence.

Deliberate reduction of the lifetime of technological products Planned obsolescence is a deliberate strategy adopted by companies to create a continuous cycle of consuming products. The main negative aspects of obsolescence affect consumers in their economic, social and cultural level. Poor quality products tend to fail prematurely with moderate use. Also the products have a series of obsolete without having update and worse yet they become incompatible technologically in comparison with it is predecessors. Objects of everyday use when they decompose to create emptiness in the lives of the people who use these products. One consequence of this is to generate a feeling of the need in the consumers for replenishing the defective product. Neverthless, this problem also affects the freedom of buyers and violates their rights. On the other hand, the obsolescence affects the perceptions about quality and aesthetics that finally decreases in superfluous and unnecessary consumption. Another problem is the industrial pollution and the accumulation of waste due to replacement of the defective item. Also obsolete technology products are thrown away and pollute the environment. Consumers should demand quality and durability of the products we buy. We should also reflect and change our buying habits to avoid contamination of our planet. First, through history there are criticism about the quality of the products that people buy. According to Maycroft (2009), the technological growth and commodification have managed to establish poor production standards. Nevertheless, these standards can be seen in modern times as the inability to repair or update articles that because of obsolescence is technically and economically unfeasible. It is convenient and almost perfect for industries to have a voracious market for new products that have a relatively low production cost and ultimately have a high selling price. An example of this situation is detailed in the 2011 documentary Dannoritzer entitled "Buy, throw, buy". This documentary talks about a famed

company that makes the Mp3 players of the first generation. This music player had a critical flaw in the energy efficiency of the lithium battery. This inconvenience began to appear at 12 months when the factory warranty expired. The company has conveniently announced a new product with improved battery but not an indemnity or change. The company in question began to have some demands from its customers. The situation was unbearable for users of the second generation began to have the same drawback. When you reach this point of the company with a warranty tester extended to your products and exchange a battery change. This new platform of technical support has resulted in a capital injection for a new source of income thanks to a defect in the battery (Dannoritzer,2011). The technological defect fits into one of the planning obsolescence planes that are detailed later in the second part. The profits obtained represent millionaire income that will later be invested more market studies and more obsolescence plans. Second, the companies allocate time and resources to carry out the obsolescence. Below are strategies for planning. Three fields of action can be distinguished. The first concerns the technical implications for gradually decreasing the quality of fundamentals component in the devices. The second also refers to technical aspects but a controlled wear to be able to have a useful life for the product. The third and perhaps best known like stylistic obsolescence perceptions appealing to people saying that a product is outdated (Maycroft. 2009). According to Taiwo (2013), the obsolescence program does not necessarily involve corrupt designers who sabotage products and seeks to harm the consumer. Rather, it involves planning to scientists and engineers seeking a balance between utility and prejudice. An example that links the first two fields of action of obsolescence is that of the printer presented in the Dannoritzer documentary. This printer presumably shows a physical damage and this notifies that it must be subjected to technical support to be repaired. Later in technical service

the owner of the printer is informed that it is very expensive to re-install the printer and it is advisable to buy another one that has improvements and is much cheaper than the repair. The owner of the printer decides to look for more information about the model and the defect in the internet. Finally, he finds a solution from a hacker that examine him of a firmware that corrupts the security of the printer's software. This firmware aims to restart the timer of use of the printer and in this way removed the lock that was thought to be physical damage at the product (Dannoritzer,2011). It is necessary to analyze moral implications. In the past, when buying a product one was owner of this object and could be inherited but nowadays, we are not owners of anything since by a previous planning our products are already obsolete and in general they become trash and are discarded. The obsolete technical aspect implies the obtaining of the date of expiration of products so that the factories and promotional agentcies give to know new products with better characteristics and better benefits. These new products are the ideal replacements that consumers acquire without knowing that they are pawns in a game of chess. Thirdly, the excessive production of products necessarily invokes the consumption of environmental resources and unfortunately implies the contamination of the environment. According to Fernadez a clear example is the extraction of minerals such as mercury, chromium, cadmium, selenium and nickel. These minerals form the majority of electronic articles. Coltan is a mineral extracted from the territory of the Congo that is used as an additive in batteries (Fernadez,2014). We must be clear that the mineral refining involves chemical processes and a great energy expenditure. On the other hand, most electronic devices possess toxic substances with high levels of purity that are possible sources of contamination if they are not recycled and treated with responsibility. But in reality, most technological waste is treated as inert waste. These technological wastes have a high toxic

potential to pollute the environment. Most technological products contain heavy metals that pollute water sources. Mike Anane environmental activist talks about the flow of electronic waste since 2003 has been growing in Ghana. Laws prohibit sending waste to third world countries, but entrepreneurs play with laws and supply second hand products. Most electronics arriving in Ghana don’t be repaired. Residents of the area remember this place overflowing with life and wildlife despite everywhere but with the illegal storage this place has become a simple dump. This place worsens the quality of life and promotes poverty (Dannoritzer,2011). Planned obsolescence in technology products is a forced sales strategy to promote the replacement of defective items. One of the main negative consequences is the economic loss of the consumer to replenish the product. We must be clear that the planning to decrease the useful life of the products aims to increase the earnings. Another effect of obsolescence is the increase in subcontracted employment than does not provide job stability and a legitimate wage for employees. Also another negative effect is the use of low quality raw material that causes waste to increase. This in turn causes the increase of environmental pollution by the increasing share of industrial production. On the other hand, the obsolescence is an instrument of the great companies to increase the economic benefits of the sale of products. As the demand for products increases, companies need more employees for factories. It is clear that more people are hired without preparation that becomes disposable and easily exploitable employees. Possibly these economic benefits increase the gross domestic product of the host country of the company. But the power that is given to foreign companies prevents the development of national companies and violates the autonomy of the country. Also this immoral instrument promotes a vicious circle of consumerism and frivolity. An intrinsic benefit of obsolescence is the

improvement of technology by companies to be able to make the product more attractive. This aggressive competition among companies does not promote the adaptation of technology by degenerating into technologically incompatible devices. In conclusion, obsolescence is a tool that companies use to increase consumption. The problem with this tool is that today it is camouflaged in our lives and serves as a motor for a growing economy. The obsolescence generates high profits for the companies but consumes economic resources of the consumers. This consumption cycle affects the environment and changes the mentality of people. The perception of the people is transformed and it is gentle to buy and to discard the objects. The central problem is pollution and resource consumption. Contamination today affects weather and public health. Companies must ensure the useful life of the products they sell and must also ensure compliance with environmental laws and regulations. Another realistic solution could be to inform the organization and the time of the products for the consumer to decide. Finally, we must adopt a more mature position to buy with criteria to avoid a superfluous and frivolous consumerism.
