Dear Portfolio Reader,
My name is Daniela Alejandra Negrete, and I am student at Yachay Tech University. Thank you for reading the assignments done through the level 6 of English course in my portfolio. My portfolio includes 5 assignments which 4 of them are essays and the last one is a research paper. Although, these assignments were difficult, they helped me to improve my English mastery. Thanks to teacher and peer reviewers, my writing has improved compared to beginning of the level. These tasks allow me to identify the strengths and weaknesses I had at the time of writing. Despite at first, I didn’t do well on English, I quickly realized that it is possible to do well if you make an effort.
At the beginning of this semester I just wanted to finally finish English and get rid of the course, but when I started writing the essays and got my grades I realized that I have made a lot of mistakes. My grammar was terrible and for that reason I was graded with a 5 out of 10 in my first essay. For this reason, I was frightened of losing the level because I had a lot of problems with writing, but I talked with my parents and they told me I should never give up and to have confidence on myself. My parents helped me to do not give up, and they reminded me that I was given the scholarship this semester and that if I fail a single subject I would lose it.

Through the pass of time, thanks to the suggestions I had from my teacher and friends, my writing skills began to improve. It was hard for me to write, read and speak in English, even think in English which is our biggest student’s problem, but the more you practice, the better you will be. Moreover in level 6 I have learned to improve my public speaking skills by doing presentations, debates, conversation and impromptus. This takes time to get it because you polish your skills with practice and time. One of my favorite parts of the course was when I had to choose my research paper topic because I was really excited with the fact of doing my paper. So, when I picked education as a topic, I wanted to find out if college is still a guarantee in labor market because my sister received her degree and could not find a job. This was the motivation I needed to start my research
The best thing that I have learned of my work in English is that to understand something, we have to analyze the content because in that way you could define what points you are going to take and create new ideas. When you write an essay, the first thing to do is to get the information, to organize the ideas that you have of the subject, and to create an outline, these outlines are the skeleton of an essay. The most important part in level 6 were my friends because they were my ha ha moments. Despite in the short time we met, we all managed to get along and create a pleasant atmosphere in class. Several classes were very entertaining because we are all connected and we knew what to talk about and create unforgettable moments.
I think that I learned a lot in the level 6 of English with the help of my teacher and classmates because we can learn with anyone, we have to acknowledge that depend on us learn. We have to recognize the value in it and apply to our life. The most important thing I learned is that it does not

matter obstacles, only you have the desire of achieving a goal. You have to keep into your mind that there is nothing impossible to reach. I hope you like it and read my essays and see how my progress was at level 6

Is a Good Investment the College?
We live in a world with constant changes and social transformation in which youth is one of the most affected groups by the economic crisis. Youth unemployment is one of the biggest problems facing young people. This crisis affects not only young people without college degrees, also affects a young people with college degree. However, we have to think who has more opportunities to get a job. Several studies have shown that the realization of higher education is still a guarantee of employment. Education gives young the necessary tools; so that they can have a life with a purpose and improve their social position. According to Azziz, nowadays universities still guarantee a more stable life level, either in economic, demographic and social aspects. The importance of the college lies in that gives an advantage to persons who have a degree than others who do not have a degree in order to deal with problems.
According to the text Azziz talks about how many people still value a college degree, despite of various difficulties. According to the carried-out investigations by Georgetown University and Pew Research Center, people, who have a bachelors, engineer, Ph.D. degree or doctorate, will have higher incomes than other people with only a high school diploma. University has become a little vulnerable because we have read or listened stories about university youth recent graduates who are unemployed due to the economic crisis. However, the Pew Research Center achieved important results. They find three main points: declines in employment and salary was more severe for people with lower education. They search to accessing good-paying job and graduate’s college had more successful in finding work during the crisis than people without a degree. So, while the recession has been very hard for the majority of our young workers, it has been less hard on graduates. It means

that the economic crisis affects more to people without a degree than the person with college degree. The Georgetown University Center carried out research demonstrated that there will be an increase in demand for workers by 2020 (Azziz, 2015). On the other hand, we have to talk about an important factor which is the economic sources. The accessibility to the college often represents a great difficulty for people. The AASCU survey found a clear evidence about the economic factor, the economic viability of the college is extremely important for the majority respondents, especially for populations that do not have sufficient resources. Aziz tells us that we must take into consideration all these parameters. Also, we have to focus on educating to those people without a college degree. It is promoting access and viability for those who want to go to college, and they cannot attend. Secondly, the investment in the public universities offer greater possibilities in the labor market. Third, demographic and economic changes may affect students, so the proposal, against it, is the establishing of effective means to ensure and guarantee the access to a quality university to these youth. The real importance lies in willing and having access to college. Higher education guarantees a society with a better future.
Moreover, we can conclude and agree with this article because we know that education is a key to get a steady job with a good salary. The advantage of obtaining a college degree is that it allows us to compete in the labor market and prepares us to be better people. The university implies new world, where the final result is learning about it. It interacts and creates new ideas based on what they learned (Obama, 2015). The society is in a constant change where people have to develop and face the uncertain future. The labor market figures show that recent college graduates have a lower rate of unemployment than students without a degree. For example, “in a recent national survey conducted by the Pew Research Center, more than 90% of college graduates reported that college helped them grow intellectually and mature as individuals (Auon, 2011). The objective of the 2017

university is expand the horizons of students. They prepare them with new expectations and ideals, and also it helps to foster relationships with various partners. Colleges and universities are a safe way to expand economies and promote social mobility in a country. In the 1950s, the expansion of higher education in the United States helped create the American middle class. South Korea became to be one of the poorest nations to one of the richest due to the investment in higher education (Auon, 2011). In conclusion, these are the reasons why today despite having so recent graduates who are unemployed, it is much difficult to find a stable job without a college degree. The aforementioned factors as demographic, economic and social will change overtime, but people will find work depending on their professional profiles and preparation to a hard world. People with more education they will be able to generate jobs. So, every person is able to develop their own business or get a job in order to compete and create work in labor market. However, it is the responsibility of each character to the correct decision like studying at the university or just having a bachelor degree which will limit its growth and personal development.

The story of an hour
Imagine if you a writer. You would think what I am going to write because there are a lot of scenarios and each one with different themes, realities and different ways that a history can take. This is how this story tells how a woman gets the news that husband is dead, which generates a world of feelings in her before such a situation. The amazing thing about the story is that the death of her husband is a lie, it was a confusion. Dramatically changing the end of the story. Many story can change our lives as in the case of this woman. In Kate Chopin's the story of an hour, each plot in each little story can allow to realize the short stories theme. The different settings about the story revolves around three places: room, a staircase and a front door. The settings, express various feelings. The development of the scene in the room express pain, longings, of the same time happiness, and acceptance of the death of her husband. The door represents the anguish of a sister and despair. The staircase for a moment in the story express liberty, but in an instant it becomes in sadness.
When she realized that her husband has died. She walk for the staircase to her room. Several thoughts come to your mind. All around of she reminds her husband, his an absence made her think in all time that she suffered with her husband. She did not know how to accept this situation. She will not see her husband for the rest of her life. The ambience of the room bring back memories that deconcentrate her thoughts. When she separated all this. She can concentrated in her life. She saw the sky from her window thinking that now everything would change. She would be free because "She was young, with a fair, calm face, whose lines bespoke repression an even a certain strength"(Chopin,

1894). She has gained her freedom. In spite of the tragedy and suffering lived. She had the desire to be happy with this new opportunity. The death of a person will always bring pain, but the family will always be at all times. In this story Josephine the sister of Louise, who was in the moment that Louise received the news of that her husband was dead. The sister was very worried for her sister. Louise had locked himself in his room. While her desperate sister knocks her door with the hope that she would open. The anguish of the sister to not being able to do anything, because a door was crossed to him. She cried anguished thinking that her sister might commit some madness, but her sister's response was "Go away, I am not making myself ill" (Chopin, 1894). The family will always be in the difficult moments, but sometimes when we trying to help, there are obstacles that generate pain. The suffering of a family member always causes pain for the whole family. Josephine was looking for ways to help her sister, but she could not be with her. Which causes more anguish, because she didn't know what could happen to the other side of the door. In this case Louise was thought in her life and the new opportunities that had for live, but Josephine didn't know that. The family always cares about each member of the family, always looking for the well-being of each one.
When she accepts the death of her husband. She see the world with different perspectives. She thought in the spring and summer days, where she could enjoy and admire the wonders of nature. She will have the opportunities to be happy and free. After one moment Louise opened the door and she looked at her sister. Louise's gaze expresses victory but above all hope and tranquility. They both knew that everything would be all right. They go down stairs in sign that everything's fine. The staircase is a pathway that depending on the circumstances can express the victory and sadness, because in the first scene the staircase represent pain, sadness and confusion. In the second scene this

pathway express victory and new opportunities. When they thought it was over. They heard when the door was opening. In this moment Richard her husband was in front of her. Everything it had all been a mess, her husband was alive. This caused Louise to give him a heart attack causing his death. In conclusion, the different scenes in a story can express various scenarios. In this story with only three plots. Develops a story with different perspectives and realities. Showing how history can change in an instant, the author shows as each scenarios have different themes. In life we all live a different story, with different paths and situations as is the case of Louise who finds out that her husband is dead. She faces many feelings, since she suffered with her husband. This is how she thinks she will have a new opportunity to be happy and above all to be free. At the end of all this process of acceptance and happiness. The story has an amazing twist her husband is not dead and she died for this account. Each story, however short, has significant meaning and development, each scene will have its importance.

The Kiss of the Death
“And his young heart cannot help; in his veins the blood stops and freezes and encouragement lost faith embraces fall feeling the kiss of death” (Verdaguer, n.d.). In 1930 Llaudet family lost a young son who died all of a sudden, and because of that they wanted a sculpture which represents their feelings as a result of their son’s death. The Kiss of the Death is a gorgeous marble sculpture by Jaume Barba which represents tragedy and romance. The author of this awesome sculpture shows how people accept their destination and how the death welcomes them. The sculpture depicts the death, in the form of a winged skeleton, giving a kiss on the forehead of a handsome young man. The sculpture shows the death as a trip partner who guides people through a shadow valley directly to the feeling of renunciation of life. The death hugs and kisses the young man and it seems like the death was loving him. Ironically, that kiss will carry him to death´s world.
The kiss of the death transmits a tragedy feeling for anyone who sees it. The tired hands that lie on the ground show a man defeated, a man who only said “Ok, take me” and does not want to proceed. The impotence of not being able to fight against the death who seems to be his faithful lover leaves the young man dreams and desires; he could not fulfill since the death was presented to him without anticipation. This unusual sculpture is intriguingly anachronistic in a pre-Raphaelite kind of way due to the perfection in the meticulous detailing of this sculpture. Details such as Death’s hollow ribs and tunic are rendered three-dimensionally that to allow see the cavities and spaces. All these details play a strong role in knowing what the author of this beautiful sculpture wants to convey to us. Thus, for example, the position of the hands transmits a feeling of resignation, or the position of the knees that are bent down transmitting a regret in the young man, and the most important sign that is

the kiss that this winged figure gives in the forehead of the youth. All of these signs clearly have a meticulous work because in this way the author gives us an idea of what he wanted to plasm in this artwork. Due to the hard work that seems to have the kiss, this work of art is centered in the fact that this figure (the death) seems to have a great desire to be at last with this young man. This man does not want to offer any resistance because it seems that something very important for him was snatched. So, the death with apparently great passion will go with his beloved young man to his world where the young man will finally get rid of what weighs him down.
Ironically, love can be appreciated in this sculpture which at first sight only looks like a personification of tragedy as the death. The sculpture represents the death in the form of a skeleton with wings where the young man's body collapses before her. While the death who is the reason of the incident with an attitude of love gives him a kiss on the forehead and holds him so obstinately that we can appreciate the strength with she hugs the young man. A kiss represents love and it is purest and the most tender essence. The death is the causative of that young man's life will end, by kissing him and bringing him to his kingdom. How can there be love between death and youth? Maybe because the young man was willing to give himself to that love in all its fullness by accepting his fate. He was willing to give up his life to let his heart stop, and surrender to the death without thinking in consequences. Thus, regardless of the time nor the conditions their souls will be forever united in one alone. From another perspective, instead of a painful death, we can see it as a dream in which from another perspective, instead of a painful death, we can see it as a dream in which the young man falling in relaxed state and he is carried away to eternal dream in which death submerges him. A dream in which the two souls came together for eternity, eternity to which they entered together, by means of a kiss. This is how death clings to him, with a hug so strong, which ends up plunging into the dream of eternity. 2017

24
Additionally, the author of this awesome sculpture shows how people accept their destination and how the death welcomes them. Young man´s face expresses resignation because he does not try to fight against death in order to conserve his life. Falling man´s arms and kneeling position denote the voluntary surrender of man's soul. The author uses these symbols for indicating that all people are conscious of their mortality and how fragile life is; it allows us to infer that all people accept the death as something normal. Also, the kiss at the man’s forehead is the welcome of eternal rest that death gives to whom died. Another interpretation of angel of death's kiss could be that it is as a promise of death to guide and accompany us when we walk through the world of the dead. The figure of “grim reaper” has different meanings for people according to their religion, or culture. However, all of them accept the dead as something inevitable and in some cases necessary. The skeleton could be an angel (by the wings) who carries the souls of deceased to a better world or to immortality. It is a new beginning because dying is only a transition between two world and realities. Also, it could symbolize just the ending of the way because the death transports our dear people outside this world where we are not going to see them never again.
In conclusion, there are many ways in which an artist can express feelings, emotions or ideas. Barba, for example, uses a beautiful sculpture in which he represents feelings such as: tragedy and love in an unexpected way. Also, he manifests the resignation to life by accepting our mortality. As a group, we interpreted this sculpture in different ways such as: in an objective way focused on all details of the sculpture, and in a subjective way by looking for meanings for all excitements we saw. However, this interpretation is not the only one because there are many styles a person can perceive the idea of the author. Lastly, there may be many different thoughts because an interpretation is a subjective process that comes from within.

A global language
Who has not thought about the possibility of speaking an only language? This idea doesn't sound so crazy. In the past according to bible stories there was a time when people spoke the same language. The story explain that the people decided to build a very tall tower to praise themselves. This action of the people was not pleasing to God, so the lord said: “if as one people all sharing a common language they begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be beyond them. Come, let's go down and confuse their language so they won´t be able to understand each other" (source: wet Bible). If this action had not happened perhaps today we would all speak the same language, but what would be the consequences of this. The idea of a unique language would make humanity to lose its essence, each country has different languages showing the diversity and culture. All languages are a new world that helps us to open our horizons.
Language is only one piece that conforms to the humanity. In this context, imagine losing the languages of the world in order to obtain a dominant global one. Humanity would probably suffer the loss of much of the culture that accompanies those languages. The world would lose the possibility to learn about the different cultures and the different expressions that it has of the languages. According to Dan Fitzgerald as cited in "the cost of humanity would be huge. Much of the culture that goes a long with each of those languages would disappear" by (Cancio, 2016). Language is more than just a method of communication. It's a link to our personal identity. Learning a language means learning to know another culture from the inside. We can only truly understand world history and current events by knowing other cultures through their own language.

Which language would be the global language? The concept of a common global language raises the question of which language we would use. Most experts agree that the answer depends largely on practical factors that could shift with changes in political and economic power over time. These question would cause war and different conflicts between nations, because what us the best language? There are a total of 6909 distinct languages in where each country prefers its language. For example, the English is a dominant language in more than one hundred countries, but the problem is that each country prefer its language and moreover the possibility that other countries accepts this is minimum. (Cancio, 2016)
Many experts conclude that all languages come from one that already existed before. That is, each language is a modification of another. There is enough evidence to say this. For example, Greek, Latin, and Sanskrit, as evidence that modern languages share a common source (source: PBS). At present the language are disappearing at an alarming rate, Which opens the possibility that in the future we will speaks the same language. We are heading towards a world where everyone may speak the same language because of the globalization that makes communication possible among the most distant communities, where people may learn both their mother tongue and the universal language, but the probability of that is Very improbable. Language is so closely linked to culture, family and personal identity." For many people, learning a dominant language in the world is important for their future, but using their mother tongue is a connection with their past". (Cancio, 2016)
Learning a language is never easy, but like everything in life you always need practice. It's like learning to play an instrument or learning a game. We know the importance that each one has. It is
2017

important to keep in mind that learn new languages transforms encoding of brain information in a positive way, making the human being more creative, so if there are established a certain language the creativity of human beings will decrease. Taking into account the link between language and identity, it is unlikely that people will abandon their own language to another. Learning a language prepares us for a new world, in addition to increasing our culture and knowledge. (Cancio, 2016)
Our world is constantly changing, leading us to the world of globalization. Where several people predict that a few years we could will be speak the same language. The loss of different languages it would make the world lose its diversity and culture. In addition to the consequences that would occur in choosing what would be the global language. We know that learn a new language is complicated, but a value of language is very important. It not only connects us with our own personal stories, but has enormous potential to shape our future.

Abstract This paper is aimed to present the real facts of the importance of studying for getting college degrees. Currently, many people say that studying at a college is unproductive, and in order to analyze the real situation in universities this paper is presented. Thus, concepts such as: that universities are able to solve problems presented to them by themselves, or that a college degree will provide a comfortable life are developed, we will see the most important factors considered by employers. Also, this paper present a counterargument against the importance of university and the needed of be prepared for the labor market. Lastly, this paper ends with a summary of all the points developed. Keywords: college, labor market, competitive, economic crisis.
“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. (Nelson Mandela). On one hand, university is constantly changing due to the growing pressure to respond to a saturated labor market, technological advances, and an economic crisis. Competitive demands between the labor market and social necessities require new contributions by universities. This does not mean that universities are not able to achieve these changes. On the other hand, Steve Jobs, Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg are examples of influential entrepreneurs, and they have a particular characteristic in common. Then, taking into account that the main characteristic of these influential entrepreneurs of our time is that none of them graduated from university, several questions have arisen around these changes. One of these questions is that Does studying for years for getting a university degree is a guarantee to have a stable life in the future? The answers to this question are very diverse because not all people have the necessary skills to achieve success, and while some people need an academic preparation, others just may have better luck. A university is capable of

evaluating current situations and dealing with these problems. Society is becoming more active and is forcing young people to prepare in a competitive and effective way to face these changes. Nowadays, the economy has a crisis which affects people with or without a college degree. As a result, college degree has become vulnerable, but college still guarantee a more stable life, being able to access better-paying jobs in order to foster their economy.
For many years, the main reason why people went to college was only for accessing to goodpaying jobs, and having a more stable life. But, the world is changing constantly, as a result, social transformation is affecting youth due to the economic crisis. Additionally, it is important to be aware that nowadays this crisis affects people with or without a college degree. “Recent reports on global employment trends show that youth unemployment remains high and on the rise, affecting more than 75 million people globally (Salvia, 2013). Difficulties for accessing and maintaining quality jobs for young people have generated several controversies in the last decades. Thus, it is stated that a university degree has lost its value because in this high unemployment rate are mostly young graduates who have been able to culminate a career. In general, it is stated that young people constitute the social sector in a better situation to confront technological change and productive transformations of the globalization. (Escorcia, 1999). Although, this unemployment exists which might be caused due that young people do not have the opportunities to develop some skills and qualifications needed to occupy the new positions and profiles that companies demand. Nowadays, many jobs need people with a high academic profile and there lies the importance of a degree. University may have undergone changes due to the crisis, but it still remains of vital importance for individual, economic, and social development of young people.

University education goes beyond a learning process, it is an essential part for the development of the human being. It exposes people to new ideas, teaches those new ways of thinking and helps people to develop a better understanding of the world around them. University not only offers necessary skills for competing in the labor market, but also it provides the essential and ethical training of teachers, doctors, nurses, engineers, scientists, and other professionals. These characteristics make that these professionals develop necessary capacities to boost local economies, support society and make important decisions that affect the whole society. An educated population is of vital importance in today's world. It helps to face various changes that globalization has been generated, and so overcoming the economic crisis more effectively. The importance of knowledge has become an important factor in economic development and it is the center of a country's competitive advantage in the world economy. In the 1950s, the expansion of higher education in the United States helped to create the American middle class. South Korea became from being one of the poorest nations to one of the richest due to the investment in higher education (Auon, 2011). This resulted in several advantages for countries that decided to invest in education as they generated greater economic growth, a reduction in the incidence of poverty, an increase in the average salary, an increase in the share of gross domestic product, and improving health outcomes. Investment in university education is proving to be an important determinant of economic growth and development (Educational Pathways International, 2010). In modern capitalist young people have a transcendental value because they are considered like one of the key points of the strategic development of a country. Even though, young people are the hardest affected by unemployment. Today, young people confront a competitive world where the demands of productivity, and rapid technological change in the context of globalization have produced profound changes in the labor market (Escorcia, 1999). This has generated an increasing in the demands for getting a job. These demands have been overcoming more effectively by people

with a university degree who have developed skills and qualities for a global world with high demands. The Pew Research Center achieved important results about this issue. They found three main points: people with lower education suffered lower rates of employment and salary than newly graduated from universities. Recent graduates of the university were more successful in finding work during the crisis than people without a degree. Thus, while the recession has been very difficult for most of our young workers, it has been less difficult for those who hold a university degree. In times of boom and recession, the labor market figures show that graduates have a much lower unemployment rate. It means that the economic crisis affects more people without a degree. The difficult situation of recent college graduates is constantly increasing. A large number of students are unemployed. “These days, with the labor market saturated with college graduates, the time and money spent on college is often a waste (2013). Employers do not recognize the effort invested in college in order to obtain a degree. Workers are rewarded for their productivity and effectiveness. However, universities do not teach to get this, the performance will depend on the person, more than in the studies.
