PORTFOLIO LETTER Nicole Espinosa Hidalgo. Yachay Tech University Yachay – Ecuador December 15 th, 2016

Dear Portfolio Reader,

First of all, thank you for taking the time to read my assignments. I am Nicole Espinosa a student of the 3rd semester at Yachay Tech University. In this opportunity, I am glad, and in the same way I feel nervous to show you all the assignments that I developed during my last English level. At this step of my university life, I could notice that this level is about writing a lot of essays and speaking on different presentations. Frequently, doing this could be boring but through the pass of time, I realized how useful it is because each project contributed to improve my English skills.

At the beginning of this level, the last one, I was worried about how difficult it could be because I only saw the few essays and presentations that I had to do. This fact stressed me because I should be able to make a different kind of essays, which frequently are accompanied with presentations. For these reasons, I noticed that English level 6 focuses on improving and developing writing and speaking abilities of each student. Along the different assignments that I had to do, it means through the summary and response, the literary analysis, the interpretative and argumentative essay until my research paper, I learned and developed new writing skills which improved my English learning. It is well known that in order to become any language speaker, the abilities of

PORTFOLIO LETTER writing, speaking, and listening should be well developed. For this reason, in level 6 students can improve the writing and speaking capabilities.

Talking about classes, it was dynamic and I really enjoy it, especially when the professor taught us some idioms. These ones fortify my speaking and make it sounds fluent. In the course, I really like to work in groups because by this way my classmates and I have the chance to exchange ideas. When we work as a team, it means during the Interpretative essay, I realized that working in groups could be worthy because it is an opportunity in which I can see my classmates English abilities, and when they have problems in something that I know, I can help them.

Each task that I made, and which is presented here, represents my English progress. Along it, I had mistakes, but each one of them teaches me something new. As a quote says: “Making mistakes does not mean you are a failure. It just means you are trying and learning in life. It is important to mention, that doing the different assignments are only directed to practice how to write in English, and enhance this aptitude. Practicing once again and again is the way on which people can guarantee the learning even if they make mistakes because frequently the errors are the best teachers.

I hope you enjoy my different assignments and on each one of them, you can notice my progress or find something new and interesting.

Sincerely:

Nicole Espinosa H.

HOW DOES OUR LANGUAGE SHAPE THE WAY WE THINK?

HOW DOES OUR LANGUAGE SHAPE THE WAY WE THINK? Languages and New Vision of Life.

Nicole Espinosa H.

Yachay Tech University

HOW DOES OUR LANGUAGE SHAPE THE WAY WE THINK? Around the human beings life are multiple ways to communicate. Language can be considered as one of them. Knowing this, it is important to keep in mind that around the world exist many different languages. An especial feature of each language is the fact that each one has been developing according to diverse facts such as: the geographical localization, the culture, and the human behavior. Then, according to Federico Fellini “A different language is a different vision of life. As a consequence of it, the different languages put to human beings a barrier when they want to transmit a massage. For that reason, Lera Beroditsky mentioned on her article How Does Our Language Shape the Way We Think?, that all languages differ between them in innumerable ways. Therefore, the communication between people not always transmits the accurate information due to the language, specifically into the grammar differences, the lack of vocabulary, and the different perceptions. Along the first section Beroditsky emphasizes that language is so fundamental to human being experience. Next, the writer states that an important component of the language is the grammar. For instance, in order to understand what the transmitter tries to say an English speaker should be alert and mark the verb tense. In other cases such as Russian speakers, they need to indicate the verb tense, and also the verb information about completion and the gender. But in contrast, Indonesian speakers do not need make some distinctions in order to transmit information. With this point, the writer concludes saying that grammar affects how people perceive the environment, and as a consequence people encode only a small part of the information that they want to transmit. In the second section Lera is referring about the way in how people can be located in the space. This is a fundamental domain of thought. Moreover, she noticed

HOW DOES OUR LANGUAGE SHAPE THE WAY WE THINK? that some native languages such as Kuuk Thaayorre, it lets the speakers stay oriented all the time. This occurs because these language speakers should use cardinal directions in order to express something, so as a consequence the basic aspect of location perception can be affected by language. For this reason, people’s ideas of time differ across languages because in each one of them, the speakers build their own representation of time. Finally, in the third section after the composer made an experiment, she resolved that the cognitive performance is shaping by the language that each individual learns. For that reason, language can interfere with the orator way of thinking, so whereas one person is trying to acquire a new language he or she is intrinsically learning new ways of thinking. In the second place, language and visual perception have a strength loop. To illustrate this, Beroditsky stated that Russian speakers do not have a unique word which refers about blue, yet they should make a distinction between light blue and dark blue. At least, in the article the writer establishes that language shapes the way in which people think because grammar gender influences in the mental representations of concrete stuff. The main point I agree with Lera Beroditsky is the fact that she mentioned that “language is so fundamental to our experience.” This is because as she stated before language is a useful tool which lets us the chance to have a life. That is to say, do the things that connect people with the whole world. It is important to remind that language faculty is used by human beings since they are children. Also, as Hedeager Ulloa mentioned on the article Is Language unique to the human species?, language is a kind of communication system, and each one of them is unique because each one of it is

HOW DOES OUR LANGUAGE SHAPE THE WAY WE THINK? creative and unpredictable. By this way, both authors highlight the important role that language plays in the communication. Subsequently, I agree with the writer when she states that “language is normally involved in even surprisingly basic perceptual judgments.” The way in which people describe the world even it sounds such as a fundamental activity, it is deeply affected by the way in which they conceive the environment. To clarify, Lera also mentioned that “apparently flukes of grammar, like seemingly arbitrary assignment of gender to a noun, can have an effect on people´s ideas of concrete objects.” According to this idea, it is clear to notice that depending on the grammatical tools that each language gives to humans, they will acquire a peculiar perspective of life. To summarize, it is important to remind that each human being uses a different language and the one which he or she adopted is going to depend on the localization and even with her or his culture. In addition, it is worth to mention and emphasize that each language is different, but languages are useful because its main purpose is connect people and let the thoughts transference. Moreover, languages are a gadget that people use to transmit information with their crew, and this means expressing opinions or exchange. As people can notice, language is related to mold the way in which people think. To sum up, Steven Pinker correctly said that “the language we use influences the way we think.” Consequently, the best feature that different languages bring to the human being life is the faculty of being open mind.

FREEDOM IN LIFE

FREEDOM IN LIFE Mrs. Mallard closes the door to her room so that her sister Josephine cannot get in, yet she leaves the window open. Why does the author, Kate Chopin, point this out? How might this relate to the theme of freedom within the story? Where else can you see this?

Nicole Espinosa H.

Yachay Tech University

FREEDOM IN LIFE The most important human right is freedom. Currently, it is easy to see that this right is available for everyone. But on the past, this human condition not everybody could appreciate. To exemplify it, in other age’s women are the principal human beings who do not have their self-determination. This occurs because when a woman was a child she must obey her father until she gets married, because once she gets on an engagement, the husband takes the control over her. On the article The story of an hour written by Kate Chopin on 1894, the writer wants to show the readers that even when somebody wrongly thinks that he or she must be under the control of someone else; there will always be a light of hope saying freedom is for each one, and each person is responsible for him or herself. First of all, in order to show that on ancient ages women were subordinated under the control of men, the writer states that when Mrs. Mallard received in “veiled hints the new of her husband´s death” (Chopin, 1894), Richard (her husband´s friend) and Josephine (Mrs. Mallard´s sister) were expecting that she felt like other women the “paralyzed inability to accept its significance.” However, Mrs. Mallard does not do that. According to Kate, Mrs. Mallard shows sadness after heard the notice, but then she realized that she could be free. For this reason, Mrs. Mallard went away to her room, and once she was there she closed the door but leaves the windows open. In order to highlighting Mrs. Mallard´s achieved freedom, she was able to “see in the open square (the window) the tops of trees that were all aquiver with the new spring life” (Chopin, 1894). This means that Mrs. Mallard always lived in a subordinated life until she was available “to life for herself” (Chopin, 1894). In addition, it is worth to mention that from that time Mrs. Mallard realized that her life belongs absolutely to her. That is to say, that she have the control of her life over her hands.

FREEDOM IN LIFE With the aim of enjoy her freedom, Mr. Mallard “open and spread her arms” (Chopin, 1894) to taste the most important human right. This was the best sensation that Mrs. Mallard could feel because she was so excited to finally be “free by body and soul” (Chopin, 1894). At this point, it is important to bear in mind that the new days such as spring days and summer days will be for her. Knowing this, the reader can suggest that Mrs. Mallard heart´s trouble was not because of health. Instead of it, heart issue was because she was subordinated to her husband control. This can be a correct assumption because once Brently Mallard (Mrs. Mallard´s husband) arrived at the house, Mrs. Mallard died, and according to doctors joys killed her. In conclusion, The story of an hour shows that Mrs. Mallard lived a subordinated life. The main reason to state this is because Mrs. Mallard is a unique character who does not have a name; along the story in order to refer to her, the writer uses Mallard which is Brently´s last name (Brently was Mrs. Mallard´s husband). Another aspect which contributes to mentioned that Mrs. Mallard were not free. It is because the first mood of grief that she lived was not so long, yet the big joy that she experimented cost her life. On the other hand, achieving the freedom even for a short period of time makes her feel “like a goddess of victory” (Chopin, 1894). All the good sensations that she could feel; it means the little bite of freedom that she can taste were thanked to the window. This small object lets Mrs. Mallard observe the freedom on life, so this simple object gives her the opportunity to feel her freedom.

HUMAN BEINGS AND NATURE

HUMAN BEINGS AND NATURE The Dangerous Relationship Between a Man and Nature

Isaac Iglesias P. Martín Vélez F. Nicole Espinosa H.

Yachay Tech University

HUMAN BEINGS AND NATURE Currently, one of the best ways to catch society’s attention in order to transmit a message is by making something entertaining and easy to understand. Frequently, this communication system is used to let people know what is happening in the world. With this in mind, there are some problems that all human beings must need to be noticed about. An example of the main global issues is the devastating impact in the environment which is caused by human beings. With the aim of searching a solution for this, first it is required that all people know about it, and then they should become aware of it. For this, Steve Cutts uses a short animation story called “Man, in which he tries to show how each action made by human beings cause a huge devastation in the environment. To begin, it is important to know that in order to present the impact of human being in nature, there are many ways to illustrate different aspects of it. For example: pictures, books, documentaries, and short animations. Consequently, to portray some circumstances Cutts choses a short animation. In this gadget, the author exposes how human beings have been destroying their environment with the selfish aim of gaining their own comfort. To rephrase it, along the video people can see how the humanity destroys the nature because it brings to human raw material from which they can create stuff for its personal use. To understand this better, the short animation requires to be analyzed both in content and author. It is substantial to get to know Steve Cutts the author. He is a contemporaneous artist and a specialist with animation and cartoons which analyze and critique the modern human beings lifestyle. To do this, the author does constant research and keeps himself informed. Due to this, he knows the different problems that are in the world such as: the pollution by human contamination, and the unnecessary exploitation of natural resources which include animals and plants. It is important to notice that the

HUMAN BEINGS AND NATURE author defends animals, because the majority of his video shows how human convert animals in food or objects. To exemplify it, along the video Steve exhibits the way animals are used as tasting make-up experiments, raw material for clothes, musical instruments, food and even toys. Indeed, the author makes a huge emphasis on exhibit the brutality that the industries use in order to create stuff for the human being comfort. In the same way, the cruelty with which animals are exploited is one of the main reasons which motivated Steve in order to create a video in which the principal target is showing humans how they harm the environment, and with it raise awareness. This can be possible because as Dr Wayne Dyer said: “If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at changeâ€?. It is true, that Cutts uses the video due to the fact that he wants to aware the society about the damage that is caused by human beings so, once this goal could be achieved Steve expects a social change. According to the video, a regular man walks around the nature, and every animal which comes close to him is converted into an object which makes him feel good. Then, the man keeps on taking advantage of animals to have more pleasure, and yet the nature is devastated- this fact does not matter to that human-. This part of the video exposes how the humanity misspends the natural recourse. This is the result of human being consumption, which allows the nature pollution to happen. To clarify it based on the video, when the man leaves the forest and comes into the urbanistic city. It is easy to see the nature's destruction. Granted, all this merciless addressed the city to a collapse. By all means, the city becomes full of garbage´s mountains. In order to criticize it, the author makes a complaint. In addition, the human who appears on the video is ruthless and only thinks on the things which contribute to his own happiness; this is a selfish but realistic feature of

HUMAN BEINGS AND NATURE some human beings. This aspect calls the idea of consumerism which produces a lot of unnecessary materials which will eventually be trash. To explain it, the principal cause could be the urbanism, which allows the population growth and the increase of food and other sources demand. As a result, human beings must destroy natural habitats in order to create skyscrapers that they can use as houses or factories. When humans destroy the natural environment, wild animals may become homeless, and he machines that are used on the factories emit gases that pollute the environment. Accordingly, Steve maybe makes a possible prediction of planet´s future. That is to say, that he shows through a multimedia gadget the big impact that human beings produce on each simple, but very dangerous step that Steve makes around the environment. Consequently, every spectator can catch the video massage which is represented in a comic and very realistic way. Without doubt, the most important part of the video is at the end, specifically when the man arrives at the garbage mountain peak and looks very proud invert his destruction. To conclude, Steve Cutts wants to share his ideas about the misusing use of the natural resources in which animals and every living thing is considered such as raw materials. Although, the video is a cartoon and people in some cases do not take it seriously. However, it contains a serious massage which is that human being has been consuming their environment so excessive regardless the consequences that it have. This massage can impact every spectator. Finally, it is important to keep in mind that the destruction is already done, so now the human being duty is to try to apologize the disturbance by making a correct and conscientious use of the different materials that the nature provides free to the humanity.

ESTABLISHING A GLOBAL LANGUAGE

ESTABLISHING A GLOBAL LANGUAGE An overview of different implications that are on establishing a certain language as universal.

Nicole Espinosa H.

Yachay Tech University

ESTABLISHING A GLOBAL LANGUAGE How human can share their ideas, transmit feelings and ask for something? All these activities can be done thanks to a communicative tool which is language. It is important to keep in mind that nowadays around the world there are many different languages. Due to this fact, achieving a communication which can be available and understandable for everybody could be difficult, but it brings benefits. The idea of establishing a certain language as universal despite if it is refutable, people should notice the advantages that it could bring. First of all, it is important to notice that the idea of establishing a certain language as universal represents many challenges. For example, until today as Calleen Cancio states on his article What if everyone on Earth spoke the same language?, “there is no concrete evidence of a single mother tongue spoken by ancient humans.” This statement argues that the existence of multiple languages around the world has been a reality since the beginning of human beings. As everybody knows, people use a specific language in order to communicate, and this is going to depend according the place where the people is. For this reason, there are many languages around the world, but human beings should know that “today are fewer languages than yesterday” (Cancio, 2016). As a conclusion, sooner or later languages will disappear, and the one which stationed over the others will be consider as the dominant language. The fact that languages will disappear not represent damage because as Noam Chomsky states: “Every language that has existed is just a modification of something before it.” It means that on each new language there always are some aspects that came from previous tongues. In other words, “languages share a common source” (Cancio, 2016).

ESTABLISHING A GLOBAL LANGUAGE On the other hand, in order to talk about the benefits of having a unique language, it is important to be focused on the idea of transmitting or expressing ideas. If everybody around the world speaks the same language, communication could become easy because there are no misunderstandings, and every idea will be transmitted exactly as it should. The idea of stablishing a global language does not mean avoiding other ones, but creating a new one which gathers special features that improve communication. At this point, people must wonder about the special features that the global language should have in order to achieve their goals. In order to clarify the stated idea, it is important that people notice that the candidates to be a global tongue could be the language that has most speakers, but it cannot be true. The global language should be understandable for everyone and it must not have many idioms because it makes difficult to learn it. It is important to keep in mind that stablishing a global language could be fine for a certainly time. As a conclusion, the principal use of language is communicating people and let between them the ideas exchange. The fact of establishing a global language can be useful in order to transmit the accurate information. In addition, it is important to bear in mind that “learning a dominant language is useful for humans future, but using their native language is a connection to their past” (Cancio, 2016). That is to say that even there is a global language, there should be a tongue which linked people with their culture. However, not only the language is a culture bearer´s, so if a certain tongue can be useful in order to connect properly different human´s thoughts; establishing it could represent a progress on human beings development.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE IN SCIENCE

ENGLISH LANGUAGE IN SCIENCE: How does English Influences Yachay Tech University Students Life?

Nicole Espinosa H.

Yachay Tech University

ENGLISH LANGUAGE IN SCIENCE

ABSTRACT The main goal of this paper is to state and highlight the impact that language has on human beings life. Precisely, English influences on the development of Scientists due to the fact that this language is able to shape the way of thinking, brings access to information and lets the quick development of science.

Recently, in Ecuador Yachay Tech University has been built. This place is a new college which has as a main purpose to develop science. As a consequence of this, it is a necessary requirement that its students learn English because Ecuador does not have this language as its mother tongue. Learning the science official language could represent a big challenge for the students, but it is mandatory. Although, the big effort that required become an English speaker, Yachay Tech University students should be focused on the advantages that this language could bring to their future.

Key Words: Science, language, English

ENGLISH LANGUAGE IN SCIENCE “Language is only the instrument of science, and words are but the signs of ideas”, in this quote mentioned by Samuel Johnson, he states that the relation between science and language is only to gather ideas. However, he did not notice the few aspects that are involved when language embodies the science ideas. To start, language is a communication system which allows information transfer. Human beings use language in order to exchange ideas, knowledge, beliefs and thoughts. To achieve this, researchers use recordings and written works which are made in the language of the research owner. However, it is important to bear in mind that around the world there are a bunch of languages, so it means that the information could be in any mother tongue. This fact implies that the science data will be in a variety of languages, so gathering information could be difficult or even impossible because not of everything can be connected. On the other hand, science is a big field which is built upon the research of curious people. In order to assemble this discipline, it is necessary to set up blocks of information which come from everyone who wants to know beyond the visible. Human beings are the major science developers, especially those who are studying in order to become scientists. These selected groups of people are the builders of this subject. Every discovery, research or exploration that is made by them is captured because it is needed to develop science, but the way which the learned information is stored mostly is by using language. In order to avoid this problem, the scientific community has established English as the science official language. This occurs according to Adam Huttner K., in his article “Why Science's Universal Language Is a Problem for Research”, since the second half of the 20th century.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE IN SCIENCE Knowing that nowadays English is the science official language, the different institutions that are addressed to develop, create and improve science require that each student can be familiar with English. For this reason, Yachay Tech University needs that each student can use English as well as they use their mother tongue. Therefore, it is a requirement that each Yachay Tech University future research knows the influence that language has on their life. That is to say, that each student must notice that English shapes their way of thinking, brings access to information and lets the quick development of science. First of all, it is remarkable to highlight the importance that language has on each human being life. In order to clarify it, Mary Pipher says: “Language imparts identity, meaning, and perspective to our human condition.” With this in mind, it is easy to see that language shapes each human way of being. In other words, the mother tongue contributes to making each human who he or she is. In the same way, Lera Beroditsky mentioned in her article “How Does Our Language Shape the Way We Think,” that language is extremely fundamental to the human being experience. Both arguments converge to the idea that language plays an important role in each human being world perception because“A different language is a different vision of life” (Federico Fellini). This fact occurs due to “each language requires different things of their speakers” (Beroditsky). As a result of this, researchers should be able to focus on different elements that are in the environment. It means that thanks to the researcher curiosity almost the majority of elements that lie in the environment can be studied. After all, it is important to keep in mind that the information which comes by this way could be in any language precisely in the researcher’s language. So how other researchers can be able to use this information?

ENGLISH LANGUAGE IN SCIENCE As it was mentioned before, the obtained information is a description of the elements that the research perceives. It is substantial to know, that long time ago different discoveries were written in the language of the research owner (Huttner-Koros, 2015). In order to avoid this problem, and with the aim to make the information available for everyone; science requires that the information and knowledge are in English. Achieving this will be the principal way which guaranties the information unification, and the science development. This is the main reason why Yachay Tech University is focused on teaching English to their student who are future researchers. Due to the fact that Yachay Tech University has the aim of exploring, developing and creating science, it is necessary that the education imparted in this college is directed in English. This condition is relevant because English is a good preparation for the future scientific career of each student (Huttner-Koros, 2015). To repeat, science is developed in English, so if someone wants to get into the scientific world he or she must know and manage this language. Especially, because the majority amount of information is written and stored in this language. So, if this fact could be achievable, knowledge and information will be affordable for everybody. Lastly, having free access to information has a huge relationship with the quick development of science. This is because if all the information which is required to build a concept is available for everyone, the knowledge assemble could be rapid. Nevertheless, it is remarkable to say that English was not always the science official language. Due to the fact that science develops every day, Nina Porzucki claims in her article “How did English become the language of science?”, that the official science language changes according to different events on history. Thanked to this fact, English displaced Latin and German (both were the official’s science languages in the past),

ENGLISH LANGUAGE IN SCIENCE since the World War I “when international organizations to govern the science begin to function” (Porzucki 2014). Knowing that Yachay Tech University is located in Ecuador, it is important to take into account that in this country the mother tongue is Spanish instead of English. So learning this new language can represent a big challenge for the students who never have contact with English. In this way, Lynda Lampert on her article Advantages & Disadvantages of Studying English says: “Learning how to speak English requires a commitment.” This phrase remarks how hard it is learning English because it requires effort and dedication. If the entire endeavor is only invested in learning the new language, Yachay Tech University students who do not have mastery in English should decrease or stop their research. This bad effect can be produced due to the fact that doing a research and learning a new language requires time and the whole concentration of the apprentice. This argument against the fact that English has been established as the science official language is valid because science can be developed anywhere and by anyone who has curiosity. It is important to bear in mind that the person who makes knowledge not always is an English native speaker. Nevertheless, with the aim of making information universal and accessible for everyone, it is required that science has an official language regardless the effort that it needs. Yachay Tech students should not be focusing on how hard it could be learning a new language. They must be aware of the benefits and advantages that are involved in the fact of being or becoming an English speaker. For example, students should notice that English opens the door to different wonders in the scientific world. Also, it is important to take into account that there will be more scientific information and knowledge in English than in other languages.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE IN SCIENCE To sum up, the biggest benefit of establishing English as an official science´s language is that it connects knowledge and information that come from any far-flung corner of the world. Also, it is remarkable to mention that the language that each human being speaks influences their thoughts and their conception of the world. This aspect contributes to developing science because it lets that each individual can be focused on different elements of the surrounding. In order to be able of learning about this information, it is essential to put the knowledge in a way that could be affordable for anyone. This fact should be done if there is established a certain language as official. It is true that nowadays the majority of publications are written in English. For this, English is the official science language. To conclude, the fact in which English is established as an official science language brings to researchers benefits. In this context, a unique language makes it easy the way in which researchers can share and obtain information. In simple words, gathering the knowledge and information in a unique language which can be available and understandable for everyone could make big advances in science which imply the development of this field.
