Portfolio Letter Osiris A. Roman T2-12 Yachay Way Yachay Tech University Urcuqui, Imbabura, Ecuador
December 6, 2016
Dear Portfolio Reader:
My name is Osiris Roman. I’m 22 years old, I’m from Santo Domingo de los Colorados. My English career began when I was a child. In my school, I discovered by first time the languages world, beginning with English. Although, I didn’t be interested in English because at the beginning it was so difficult for me. Then, the time passed and I went to the high school. I moved to another neighborhood and I got new friends who were good English speakers, writers and good English students. They made me got an interest by English songs. Then, they began to discuss the lyrics songs and I was quiet while they told about some ambiguous meanings which I had never tried to understand. To be able to talk with my friends about lyrics song, I began to translate words, phrases and sentences, doing a effort to understand what the song was talking about. My English skills got better a little, enough to one day be able to talk and understand a girl that came to my neighborhood in an exchange program. I was proud of my English learning because it allowed me to talk with another person from another culture. Today I decided never to waste another English class again. Pitifully when I took this decision, I finished high school and I began my life in Yachay.
3
Here at Yachay, I began from zero my formal academic English learning. I began learning about the “to be” verb and some greetings. My first teacher was Laura Reagan, and pitifully she left the university at the middle of the leveling course. Then, Shelly Camba took her place as English teacher, but even when Laura was in United States she tried to help me to improve my English. Sometimes we use to chat on Facebook about the university and whatever other things just to she knew how was evolving my English. Nowadays we lost contact but although, I remembered her because she was a great part on my English formation. That helps me so much in my English way. Shelly Camba also was an amazing teacher, because to teach in the leveling course she was so, so patient. She always used to say me nice words even when I made so bad, until the leveling course finished and I went to the next level. The next level brought me as my new teacher to Camille Williams. She was so nice because she had her smiley face all time. That was so helpful at the moment when I need to ask for something because thanks to this I didn’t feel uncomfortable by my English level. With her I got better my listening and speaking skills.
This level finished and I went to the next where I had as a teacher to Monik Vinueza. At that time, Yachay told to its students that English grades was not going to be taken into account for our scholarship. That was the beginning of the end because I decided to focus my attention in other subjects to save my scholarship. As expected, I miss these third level and I repeated the next time with Sunny Williams. Even when I was a lot of time without practicing English by the reasons that I already mentioned In this level I learned a lot of because my teacher allowed me to gain her trust. I felt confident when I talked her and when I asked questions. Thanks to her I learned a lot of vocabulary about different topics. I also learned some English native words that sometimes come to my mind when I need these. In this level I was not only got better my English, I got a good friend that nowadays is help me when I need her. The fourth level I had as my new teacher to Monik Vinueza again. Maybe life wanted that I pass all my designed teachers and I jumped her when I lost the third level. With Monik Vinueza I had some problems
4
at the beginning of the English level although thanks to her I learned a lot of grammar and pronunciation. I thought that these semester I will did so bad, but I got one of my highest grades in all my English levels. At the end of the level I finished making peace with her because despite of all problems that I had with her, I learned a lot.
After all the events in my academic English life I must took the fire proof. To be able to take my career classes, I must take the Crash Course. The crash course was designed to pass the fifth English level to begin career on level sixth. This consisted of 8 hours of English classes everyday by around 3 weeks with the objective of improve quickly our English talking, writing, listening and living with the English language every day. With all of this I got better my English and I carry to me to a next level. After these I was able to do a essays, letters, presentations without great problems. All my English career was evolving in a way that maybe at the beginning of all I could not have imagine. After this, I took my vacations before came back to the university and I decided to test myself and my English skills. On my vacations, I downloaded all seasons of a tv serie called “The Big Bang Theory”. It is a very nice entertained serie that in my opinion was going to help me with new science vocabulary. I decided to see this series to improve my English enough to took my career classes that was planned to be totally in English. My experiment was successful because thanks to this my listening skill improve. Enough in a way that currently I don’t have problems understanding anyone with a good English level.
In my sixth English level I realize that not all depend on how much vocabulary or how good is the grammar now when you try to present your ideas. How you write your ideas or how you present it in front an audience whatever topic could influence the listener or the reader. Ercilia Delancer is my current teacher. She is a great teacher because thanks to her way of teaching I have been able to improve my pronunciation and my speaking. Thanks to her I change my goals, now I will test to me. I want to travel to United States this vacations because now I feel capable enough to defend myself in an English-speaking country. With this new goal, I want to
5
improve my English enough to maybe in the future could get my TOEFL. Although these things are not the only things that I learned with her. Thanks to her I learned that culture, reading, critical thinking is very important. Works like my presentation about some piece of art helps me to understand that it is not enough to know English. All people must know a little about all topics to could give an idea or to be able to criticize a reading smartly.
Even though I've grown and am ready to move out of the English Language Program at Yachay, I will never stop learning and practicing English. I want to become an even better student. I know that I'll have to improve my communication, especially with professors. I also plan to read more because I know my reading will help improve my language use and my classes will require much more reading in the future.
Thanks, for reading my portfolio. I put in a great deal of effort into my portfolio, and I hope you enjoy reading it. I am confident that you will agree with me that I have become more proficient in English and am ready to pursue my career.
Sincerely,
Osiris Roman

College Will Not Ensure a Successful Future “The world doesn’t care what you know. What the world cares about is what you do with what you know.” (Tony Wagner). Nowadays education has become in one of the most important thing in the life of people. Students get a huge loan only to study in a prestige university. All people think that university is the key to reach the success. Most people study to be better than people who didn´t attend to the university. At the end, student don´t find a job easily and work in whatever job to pay the university loan. In USA a lot of college graduates work in jobs which not require great academic preparation. Students want a great and successful future going to university. People could have a higher quality education even when people don’t attend to normal classes. They don´t know that their future depends of their effort to increase their human capital. First of all, People get huge loans to invest in college education. There are a lot of colleges graduates who have loans because they invest in their college education. According to George Leef, author of the article: “Don't Buy the Hype, College Education Is Not an Investment” “Large numbers are either unemployed or employed in jobs that don’t call for any academic preparation. Many are struggling with their college loans” (Leef, 2013) Education has been the key to achieve the success. As we can see a lot of people didn’t find a job even when they finished the university long time ago. That is the reason why students after university accept whatever job. Everything that the do is only to pay the loan college. Second of all, students think that the university is the key to reach the success. As Leef George says in his article: “Don't Buy the Hype, College Education Is Not an Investment” “A recent study by the Public Policy Institute of California is a good example of this sort of thinking. It purports to show that earning a college degree
9
remains a good investment.” (Leef, 2013) This kind of researches base their thesis in the comparing one person which belongs to the small group of people who have success and another person who have an average earning. We must not infer from this investigation that all people who invest in college education have success, and the other ones not have, because that deduction is a wrong generalization. All these reasons show us that university is not the key to reach the success, all depend of students and their efforts. Third of all, Students must take advantage of their college life. The university is the perfect place where students can improve their academic skills and also learn others. The most important thing which students can take advantage in university is do something with their acquired knowledge. People who didn’t have the luck to find a great job after university try to work in any job, even when these jobs don’t need a lot of knowledge. In these cases, students waste their time and money invested in education. Nowadays enterprises want multitasks people. The problem is that all students believe that the college will gave them the necessary skills for their professional life. Fourth of all. You can get higher quality education by your own. As Till H. ted talker explain in his presentation “Forget university? 4 steps to design your own education” Students only need pass through 4 stages: (need develop their skills, learn from the best, learning is more important than making money, and hustle come first.) (2014) Students can develop all skills that they want, dedication and passion are the only necessary to achieve their desired skills. In order to be the best in their respective fields, they must try to learn from the experts. They can read the best books, newest researches, all these kind of activities in order to be the best in their respective fields. Money is important, but is not the only necessary. All these advices mean that
10
students must take advantage of curiosity, because this is the most important request to build by their own a higher quality education. In conclusion Students want a great and successful future going to university. They don´t know that their future depends of their effort to increase their human capital. The university could be a waste of time or the way to reach the success, all depend as how you take advantage of college life. College must not try to do misleading advertising because it could cause confusion in young people. Young people must do a deep investigation about university. A lot of people who leaves the university nowadays are the richest people who the world has ever seeing. The college could be the wonderful investment, but at the same time the greatest waste of money and time. Everything depend of the person, if it decides take advantage of all knowledge in university or only learn the necessary to approve the subjects to go on vacations.

The story of an Hour Written by Kate Chopin in 1894, she born in Sant Louis, MI in 1850. Her parents were Irish and French, for this reason she grew up in a bilingual/bicultural house hold. She was catholic and had 6 children, at the age of 32 she became a widow. In her book “The History of an Hour” it talks about a woman who became a widow. In her story, she let us know which are the thoughts and feelings that came to the mind of a young woman with heart troubles. The author use a lot of similes in the story, to help the reader to understand all the widow situation. Due to many situations in the widow’s life she died with a feeling of freedom and interior peace. The writer connected her life with the story. Thus, maybe she tried to express her feelings with the story. As we can see in the novel, she is confined largely to a room, a staircase, and a front door. With a limited setting, the author can focus the tale in the thoughts and feeling of the protagonist. The mood of the history change along with it. Thus, she decided to lock on her room. In the loneliness, she began to recreate different aspects of her life and the difficult situation. Absorbed by her thoughts, she started feeling freedom instead of sadness. Solving her condition and getting inner peace. And so on, the author give us many references and similes, to understand her own loss. The plot is simple, a woman who became widow and go through from sad to freedom. In conclusion, the limited setting helps the author to focus on the feelings and thoughts of the main character during a depression. Using a variety of similes, get close to the pain, sorrow, and loneliness of the loss of a loved one.

Interpretation Essay Corpus Hypercubus: The Difficulty of Understanding Science and Religion
17
Corpus Hypercubus: The Difficulty of Understanding Science and Religion Lenin Rueda, Osiris Romรกn, Cecilia Medina Yachay University of Experimental Technology and Research
18
Corpus Hypercubus: The Difficulty of Understanding Science and Religion “The atomic explosion of August 6, 1945, shook me seismically. Thenceforth, the atom was my favorite food for thought.” Salvador Dalí Scientific concepts are clearly represented in this famous painting: at first named Crucifixion. This piece of art emphasizes the mathematical shapes, hypercube, and for this reason it was well-known as Corpus Hypercubus. This was created by Salvador Dalí. He was born in 1904, and he was a Spanish surrealist painter. Moreover, there is an interesting fact about him and that could explain his genuine interest in the mind and the supernatural world, and it is that his older brother was named Salvador too. His brother died some months after the birth of the artist. And Salvador Dalí grew up with the idea that he was the reincarnation of his brother. Dalí produced several famous paintings that settle him as a great surrealist painter. However, Dalí’s interest about surrealism decreased because of the amazing discoveries on science that occurred during the epoch between 1940 and 1950. His interest increased with the bombing of Hiroshima in 1945. And the astonishment of this event left him a great ambition to resolve the mysteries of science and religion. His passion to understand those issues make him create several paintings considered his masterpieces. In the Corpus Hypercubus, the artist put a big effort to represent the closeness that science and religion has. Therefore, the Corpus Hypercubus is one of the most popular paintings made by Salvador Dalí, because it has a modern meaning of the crucifixion, a creative use of mathematics on art and a resourceful portrayal of the relationship between science, religion and art. Corpus Hypercubus could be interpreted with certain connotations according its details. This famous painting was made with oil on canvas and the canvas measures 194.5 x 124 cm (Hornik, 7 August 2010). In addition, this painting has a main approach
19
to Christ suspended in a cross of cubes, Dalí uses his imagination and colors to carry the painting beyond what is realistic. The artist uses Math to tell that there is no fulfilled to the holiest Trinity. (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) because it lacks an important element that is Mary. Therefore, faith is four dimensional. The painting shows the past, present and future of Christ. Mary in front of Christ indicates Christ's birth, the cross symbolizes the present that is the crucifixion and cross floating indicates future that is Christ's future resurrection (Piderit & Morey, 2012, p.234). The painting presents as if it is moving in a parallel movement from the cross, while from another angle it seems that Christ move towards the cross. This can represent the Christian belief that Christ know everything and sees everything. The chessboard represents different ways that human being can take. The piece of art painted by Salvador Dalí has a strong relationship between “Corpus Hypercubus” and religion. The major important part of the painting is the body of Christ. The body of Christ is elevated on the air representing the most famous scene “The crucifixion”. At the bottom of the painting Mary, the mother of Jesus is seeing his body. The feeling that this scene give to all painting is faith. The Latin cross is also an important part of the painting, is placed in the ground just below the Hypercubus. The entire painting demonstrate that Salvador Dalí was inspired by the religion at the moment when he creates this masterpiece. The religion was a great part of his life. The “Corpus Hypercubus” also had a heavy relationship between it and science. Salvador Dalí was amazed by all new discoveries of his age. He tried to represent all of his passion by the sciences and he included into the painting. Salvador Dalí expressed his passion by the latest discoveries about atomic disintegration, quantum mechanics and the fourth dimension. As the body of Christ is the major representation of religion, the unfolded Hypercubus is the major representation of science. The unfolded tesseract
20
dimension had recently been discovered by a mathematician. Salvador Dalí take advantage of this discovery to use in his painting as the representation of the cross where Christ was crucified. Geometry is also used when Dalí painted the shadow of the unfolded tesseract on the ground. These are the ways by how Dalí tried to represent his love by science, just as he did with other paintings. In conclusion Salvador Dalí was one of the most representative painters of his age. His pieces of art created a new theory of art that combined religion, mathematics, science, and Catalan culture in an attempt to revive classical values and techniques. Nuclear mysticism was named the new art theory created by Salvador Dalí. “Corpus Hypercubus” represent all the new concept presented by Dalí with the best mix between science and religion. “Corpus Hypercubus” has caused a lot of controversy. A lot of viewers see this painting as a good representation of the crucifixion of Jesus. At the same time, other viewers think that this painting violate his beliefs. Hence that this masterpiece has get so much fame in the world of art.

Argumentative Essay: All Countries Must Legalize Drugs Osiris Anael Romรกn Eras Yachay University for Experimental Technology and Research
24
All Countries Must Legalize Drugs “Prohibition of drugs is the stupidest law. We need to allow these and tax these as we did with alcohol or cigarettes.” (Morgan Freeman) Legalization of drugs is a controversial topic to discuss. A lot of countries have laws to allow them, thus taking advantage of these. Other countries prohibit these, claiming that this is a huge issue and that must be remove form the society. Although drugs should be legalized in all countries to control this problem and to take advantage of them. Because allowing drugs we could have safer drug users. If we legalize drugs, it will reduce drug trafficking significantly. Economy of the countries will increase quickly, giving them more resources. To maintain safer to the drug consumer, these ones should be legalized. According to the article “Legalize it all”, write by Baum Dan “death by overdose of heroin increase to 300 thousand of people in USA from 2010 to 2011” (Baum, 2016). With laws that allow drugs, it will create policies focused on the consumer. Thus, control will be more efficient and death by overdose will disappear. Because doctor and nurses, or any other specialist, will share information about drugs. At the same time, these people will control doses that they consume. Legalizing drugs, drug trafficking will lose one of its bigger income. In accordance with Baum, “organized crime still controls Portugal’s supply and distribution, and drug-related violence and corruption” (Baum, 2016). So, as we see, we can fight organize crime using part of its power. Government will take the distribution control to get a huge extra income. The drug business will have no sense if they are not the only ones who sell the same product.
25
The economy of countries will increase after legalization of drugs. According to Baum “dealing with addiction requires spend 40 billion dollars per year on enforcement, incarcerating half a million. With all this great income, governments will use is to build hospitals. Money will be used to educate people or any other need. In conclusion, legalization of drugs is a great option that could solve a lot of issues that prohibition causes. We could win the war against drugs, legalizing drugs we will maintain people safer.

The Importance of Motivating Creativity in Students Osiris Anael Romรกn Eras Yachay University for Experimental Technology and Research
29
Abstract This paper discusses the importance of creativity in order to explain reasons about the necessity of motivation of the creativity in students. In order to get great scientists, innovators and better professionals it is necessary to change curricula. This paper also discusses a little bit of history about some scientist that are so popular by their abilities. Them quotes about education and some thoughts that teach people why is important to think out the box, you will find here. We will know some examples about some successful people from the last twenty years who are recognized by their great creativity. Successful people that change their mind leaving educational places in order to achieve their dreams. The explanation about why is more important an idea that the hard work try to let you see another point of view where work hard sometimes is not all in life. Keywords: creativity, education, innovation, genius, scientists,
30
The Importance of Motivating Creativity in Students “After a certain high level of technical skill is achieved, science and art tend to coalesce in esthetics. plasticity, and form. The greatest scientist is always artist as well.” (Albert Einstein) Creativity is one of the most important characteristic of the human being. This characteristic allows human beings the ability of creating from things that already exist. The ability to think of something new and better have carried the society and civilization from the past where nothing existed, until now where all technology already exists. Despite of this, currently people do not give respectable value to creativity. Educational systems are killing creativity on people. Society has already a big problem which is how to motivate creativity in its students in order to get a society of innovators. Hence, in order to transform college students into good scientists, innovators or people who leave a mark on history. Universities must implement at least one art class into the curricula to motivate creativity in students. Creative people are more efficient at the moment when they are solving problems in real life. In addition, history has demonstrated that all genial people were artist and scientist too. Creativity was unknown for a long time, although currently is an important skill required of human being. According to Vinyets Joan, author of the article: The Importance of Creative Intelligence for Our Society “In today’s world of global competition and complex problems, creative intelligence and innovative capacity are fast becoming requirements for personal and professional success. Creativity is as important in education as literacy and we should treat it with the same status.” (Vinyets, 2014). The importance of creativity for our society has taken force on the last twenty years. Enterprises decided that will be required people who show them how to spend less sources to produce the same or better things. Universities do not do anything in
31
order to answer this demand of human talent. This action only does from creativity a more demanded skill with great value representing progress and future. These reasons made from creativity a necessary skill in currently professionals. The past has taught us that creative people have greater chances to reach success than non-creative people. Leonardo Da Vinci, this multifaceted Italian is considered one of the most outstanding painters of all time, but he also worked as an architect, sculptor, musician, scientist, mathematician, engineer, inventor, anatomist, geologist, cartographer, botanist, and writer. As we see, a great artist and scientist also that could combine perfectly both to create things that are discusses by experts even today Albert Einstein, the world of physics has not been the same since Einstein developed his theory of relativity, which made him one of the most popular scientists of the twentieth century. He also liked playing the violin. People like these characters that played an important role in the history of the world were famous by the talent of think out the box. History has taught us that from ancient times, even from many years before Christ, creativity has made a difference. “Genius is 1 percent inspiration, ninety-nine percent perspiration.” –Thomas Edison. This is the quote used by Meg in her article “Creativity is overrated” to open the counterclaim where she claims that by her experience, she knows that creativity is often interchanged with inspiration, and wrongly so. (Meg, 2012). Thus, there are people who believe that creativity is overrated. They believe that in most cases knowledge and hard work have created the world as we know it today. This article explains that people give a false value to creativity and this doesn’t deserve. According to Bell Beth Cooper author of the article “The Secret to creativity intelligence and scientific thinking” , lots of great writers, artists and scientists have talked about the importance of collecting ideas and bits of knowledge from the world
32
around us, and making connections between those dots to fuel creative thinking and new ideas.(Cooper, 2014). Nowadays exist a lot of successful people that they achieved made a great fortune leaving university and working in a great idea. “I failed in some subjects in exam, but my friend passed in all. Now he is an engineer in Microsoft and I am the owner of Microsoft” (Bill Gates). There are people that doesn’t even having the knowledge they succeeded. Steve Jobs, was the founder of the Apple company, and he studied only one semester in the university. He is behind inventions such as the iPod and iPad. He recently died under the name of "genius and visionary". Bill Gates, he is one of the richest men in the world. He studied for a few years at Harvard University but abandoned it to pursue her Microsoft project. Mark Zuckerberg, he entered Harvard University in 2003 but 3 years later left it. Mark Zuckerberg is now the young owner of Facebook, the most popular social network on the planet. People like these are not knowledgeable, although they made huge amounts of money. Their greats ideas were better to succeed than their knowledge which they acquire belonging to a university. In conclusion, activities such as painting, playing an instrument, reading poetry will motivate students to think outside the box. In order to develop the imagination of the students, universities should teach art classes. Art classes relieve stress and allow students to be themselves. Creativity is the most important skill to improve our world fulfill of technology and knowledge. Nowadays a great part of the knowledge has free access to get it. Although only few people take it and mix in a perfect way achieving great new things that change our world. Student has a huge access to this information sources that is why we need to motivate them to think out of the box, because only by this way we can achieve great scientist and a society of innovators.
