Carlos Bustamante Orellana Yachay Tech University Imbabura, Ecuador Thursday, July 14th, 2016 Dear Portfolio Reader, My name is Carlos Bustamante. Thank you for reading my English Language Portfolio. This is a collection of the work that I have done during the semester at level six English class. My portfolio consists of for essays and a final research project that I made during the whole semester. I am very proud of everything I have done during the semester, and I am ready to take all the subjects in English the next semester. I have grown personally and professionally during this semester by improving and developing new skills, and overcoming some defects as well. I have always been responsible with all my works; however, my problem is that I use to make all my works the day before the presentation although I have more time to prepare those works. I could overcome that defect by making my final research project, which I developed gradually during the whole semester, so at the end I had almost all the work done. At the beginning of the semester, I expected to have more classes about grammar and vocabulary. However, level six English class was all about writing essays and making presentations, which at the beginning I considered very hard. But, after some days, those things became easier and I started to enjoy writing and speaking. Now, I really like to write essays because it help me to acquire new knowledge. In addition, I enjoy making presentations of my findings because I can give my opinion about a topic, explain my arguments, and see the reaction of my partners and the teacher.

I have learned some useful new skills in level six English class such as critical thinking, being specific, and working in-group. I learned critical thinking by reading some researches and analyzing them in order to develop my own opinion about the research. Being specific is another skill I learned by writing essays because it is required choosing a specific topic and putting only the essential arguments in an essay. In my first essay, I had a problem to pick the topic and write the thesis statement because I wanted to pick a general topic, which made very hard to write a thesis statement. After some advices from the teacher, I finally understood the reason of why it is important to be specific in an essay, and I could choose the adequate topic. I will never forget being specific in written works, and it definitely will be very useful for future works. Another important skill that I developed at level six is working in-group. I really enjoyed working in-group because everybody shared ideas, so it was easier to organize the arguments. In addition, the work was divided, so we had less work to do. Besides those benefits of working in-group, the most important is that by working of this way, we had the opportunity of getting different points of view and realizing of mistakes that we had not taken into account if we had worked separated. I feel proud about myself now as an English user because I have improved my skills in writing and speaking and I have learnt new useful skills. Now, I can write good essays, and make better presentations than before. I am also faster than before in developing thesis statements, making conclusions, and in general, I am a better writer and speaker. I think that my own effort and the assistance of the teacher Matthew Mackey helped me succeed as an English user. I made my best effort to improve my skills in writing and speaking. I took every advice that the teacher gave me for my essays and presentations, and I treated to improve the next assignments by not making the same

mistakes I had made before. My partners also helped me to improve my skills in writing and speaking because they gave me important feedback and helped me to find some mistakes that I had not realize. The next semester I will take all my classes in English, and I think I am prepared for that challenge because I understand very well when I listen to native English speakers. So, understanding the explanations of the teacher will not be a problem. In addition, I think I am able to write good laboratory reports and any other work because I have practiced writing essays at level six classes. Presentations will not be a problem neither because I have improved my fluency and gestures in order to make good presentations. I still need to learn more vocabulary, but that is something that I pretend to learn by reading books that are written in English. Although I have improved my skills in writing and speaking, I will continue practicing because I like to learn new things, so I will never stop learning. The level six was not as I expected, but it was the best that could have happened because it helped a lot to develop my potential. I know that I need to learn more vocabulary, and I will do it by reading many books, of this way I will become a better English language user. Thank you again for reading my portfolio. I made my best effort to complete this portfolio, and I hope you enjoy reading it. I am sure that you will agree with me that my progress as an English language user has been considerable.

Sincerely, Carlos Bustamante

Benefits of Learning Other Languages Carlos Bustamante Orellana Yachay University of Experimental Technology and Research May 30th, 2016

Benefits of Learning Other Languages How many languages do you know? Most of the people in Ecuador only know one and they think that it is not necessary to know others because they have not had the requirement of using a new language in their daily life, but learning a new language is never too much. Learning a new language allows us to communicate with more people in the world and even has other benefits. The article “How does our language shape the way we think? written by Lera Boroditsky (2009), makes us to think about the influence of language in everything we do or say. Since immemorial times, human beings have needed language to communicate between each other and interchange ideas. In fact, language is the most important faculty that a person has because it allows our communication and in general, it allows a person to have a normal life. For these reasons, it is difficult to imagine our lives without language. Each language is different from the others and needs different details to make a sentence and speak the language properly. So, learning a new language can change the way we see the world by allowing us to develop new skills, and pay attention to details we normally wouldn’t notice. Developing new skills, such as orientation, can be one of the benefits of learning a new language, which could be useful in the daily life. According to the research made by Lera Boroditsky (2009), the aborigines Kuuk Thaayorre talk about space in a different way than we do; they use cardinal-direction terms to define space, which means that a person that speaks this language has to be oriented at all times. Therefore, people who learn to speak this language also learn orientation, which is a useful skill in the daily life, such as in the case they were lost in a place they do not know. In this occasion, people would learn orientation, but the skills that people acquire will depend on the language they decide to learn. This is because each language requires the development of different abilities in order to speak the language properly. So, when we learn another language, we also acquire new useful skills that can help us in everyday life, which affect the way we see the world by giving us new tools to see the world. This is an advantage of learning a new language, but it is not the only one.

By learning a new language, we can also learn to pay more attention to seemingly small details. Boroditsky (2009) makes a comparison between the color perception of Russian and English speakers. That comparison shows that Russian speakers pay more attention to the details in colors because they know many types of the color that English speakers consider a single color. Consequently, if people that speak English learn Russian, they will also learn to pay more attention to the different shades of the color that they only considered as one. This learning could be very useful in many cases because it not only can be applied to colors, it can also be applied to many other things such as the details to consider in a building, the calculus needed for a trip to the moon, and many others. So, when we learn a new language, we have to learn all the necessary requirements in order to speak it in the correct way, making ourselves more attentive to the little details that we did not notice before. Being more attentive to the details can affect the way we see the world by seeing the world in a more focused way than before. Besides the two factors, which can change the way we see the world, there are other equally important. The way in which people see the world could change if they learned a new language, acquiring new ideas and points of view. An investigation conducted on English and Mandarin speakers revealed that people’s ideas about time differ between languages (Boroditsky, 2009). For example, English speakers talk about time using horizontal metaphors, while Mandarin speakers use vertical metaphors. So, if English speakers learned Mandarin, they would change the perception they have about time, and they would gain more points of view. Another example of how learning a new language can change the way we think is shown in the article, which refers to the gender of words in different languages. A study was made with German and Spanish speakers, which consisted in asking them to describe objects having opposite gender assignment in those two languages (Boroditsky, 2009). The result was that according to the gender that the word has in their language, they associate the terms to describe

it. So that, a word in feminine would be described as a woman, and a word in masculine would be described as a man. Therefore, our perception of the world can change when we learn other languages, obtaining new ideas and points of view. In conclusion, most of the people in Ecuador only know one language, but learning a new one will allow them communication with more people around the world, and it also can have some interesting benefits. The evidence found in the article shows that our way of thinking could be affected by the learning of a new language because a new language could have different metaphors to refer about time or different gender for the words we know. In addition, learning a new language can require that we become more attentive and develop new abilities. Therefore, with this evidence it is possible to say that learning other language have some benefits such as the development of new skills, the ability to pay attention to the little details, and, therefore, changing the way we see the world. For these reasons, it would be beneficial for a person to learn another language.

People Buy Unnecessary Things Because of the Influence of Commercials Carlos Bustamante Orellana Yachay University of Experimental Technology and Research May 20th, 2016

People Buy Unnecessary Things Because of the Influence of Commercials How many times have you buy a product that you do not need? Many people in the world buy products because of the influence of commercials that use misleading words or famous people to catch their attention, and make them to buy unnecessary products. Most of the commercials uses famous people or words that people like to listen in order to manipulate those people to buy a product. Because people are being manipulated by commercials to buy products that they do not need, they should be informed about this situation, and encouraged to research the real meaning of the commercials. People buy things based on commercials that only catch their attention but do not say anything about the real benefits or dangers of the product offered. According to Lutz (2008), advertisers use weasel words, which are words that say nothing in reality, to make everybody think they are making a statement when they are making any statement at all. Therefore, people buy items because they think these items are going to be useful for their necessities. However, it is possible that these products do not work as people expected. Furthermore, people can demand nothing if the product do not work as they expected because advertisers did not affirm that the product were going to work effectively, advertisers just make it seems this way. It is a problem that people buy things based on commercials because they can buy products that they do not need and even worst, they can buy products that can cause health problems. According to research made by Lutz (2008), some of the weasel words mostly used in advertising are “help” and “virtually”. The word “help” only means to aid or assist, but not cure while the word “virtually” simulates promises when there is no promise. So, when people see commercials where these words are used, they think that the product offered is going to cure them. However, the product just help to calm the symptoms that people feel, making the disease gets worst. Of this way, people that consume the product can develop serious health problems because of the misleading commercials that are transmitted through the media.

The aforementioned problem was generated because commercials offer products using words that people like to listen, but not the words they should use to describe the product. A study showed that the most popular words used in TV commercials in United States are: “new”, “improved”, “better”, “extra”, “fresh”, “clean”, “beautiful”, “free”, “good”, “great”, and “light” (Lutz, 2008). All these words are used instead of those that describe the product correctly because people like to listen them and because these words mean nothing at all. Of this way, advertisers tell people what they want to listen, and they do not make any affirmation. However, the right words, which are those that describe the real benefits and dangers of the product, should be used in commercials in order to give people all the information to make a decision. Currently, there are restrictions to avoid advertisers to affirm things that are not going to be accomplished. There are some laws designed to avoid fraudulent and untruthful claims in advertising (Lutz, 2008). These restrictions are useful because the advertisers cannot lie about their products, but these restrictions do not avoid that advertisers use weasel words. Consequently, advertisers use weasel words in order to attract people with commercials that do not inform anything about the product offered. Still, they do not receive any penalty because they are not disobeying the laws. A solution for this problem could be campaigns of information about the current commercials. Because people deserve to know what they are buying, there should be campaigns to inform people about the current commercials, and how these commercials sell products without saying anything about these products. In those campaigns people would be informed about the weasel words used in commercials, they would learn how to identify these weasel words and the denotation of them. Furthermore, they would be encouraged to search for information about the products offered in order to find enough information, and make a decision based in the information found. Of this way, people would make decisions based on

the real benefits of the product and not based on commercials that only use attractive words, and other ways of catching their attention. In conclusion, many people around the world buy unnecessary things because they are influenced by commercials. These commercials do not give enough information about the product offered, which is a problem because people can buy products that they do not need or cause damage to them. That problem was originated because of the commercials that offer products using words that people like to listen, but not the words they should use to describe the product. There are only restrictions to avoid lies in commercials, but not to avoid misleading words. For that, there should be campaigns to inform everybody about the current commercials and their way of selling items. So, because people are being manipulated by advertisements to buy unnecessary products, they should be informed about this situation, and encouraged to investigate the real meaning of the advertisements.

Interpretation essay

“Fear No More” Analysis and Interpretation Cynthia Arias, Isaac Bravo, Carlos Bustamante, and Andrés Orozco

Yachay University of Experimental Technology and Research June 17th, 2016

“Fear No More the Heat O’ the Sun” Analysis and Interpretation Nobody knows what there is after death, and because of that, most of people feel awareness to think about death. William Shakespeare, a famous British playwright, poet and actor who lived in the XVI century, thought about death in a positive way (Bio, n.d.) One example of his way of thinking is the poem “Fear No More the Heat O’ the Sun” written in between 1608 and 1609. He wanted to share with people his positive feelings about death in order to show us that we should not fear to death because death is only a part of the normal life cycle. The poem “Fear No More the Heat O’ the Sun” written by William Shakespeare describes death as a natural event that we should not be afraid because death is the end of a long path where we are going to rest in peace without worrying for the bad things. The most important characteristic of Shakespeare’s poem is the use of multiple metaphors to make abstract the message that death is something natural. A metaphor is a figure of speech, which makes an implicit, implied or hidden comparison between two things that are unrelated, but share some common characteristics (Literary Devices, n.d.). Most of the metaphors used in the poem have the same meaning. They mean that people should not be afraid to die because death could be a new life. In addition, Shakespeare used several times the phrase “Fear no more” to show that we do not know how death is, but despite of this we should not have fear. In addition, his last poem’s stanza talks about ghosts, witchcraft and exorcism. People could associate these things with fear, so all of these words are metaphors to talk about bad moments, bad feelings or maybe bad people that could disturb our peace or could cause us problems while we are alive. However, all of these will end at the moment of death, allowing people to rest in peace. Besides the use metaphors, Shakespeare used symmetry in his poem.

Symmetry could make us to think that life and death is the same thing, so that we should not fear to death. Symmetry refers to something that has both sides that are exactly or very similar to each other. The poem has four stanzas, and each one has six lines. It is possible to appreciate symmetry between the first four lines and the last two lines. So, by using symmetry Shakespeare was trying to express that there is another life after death where we are going to rest of the things we used to care in the past life, such as the job or the money. According to David Anderson, senior editor of Religion News Service, it is very possible that Shakespeare was Catholic. Therefore, the Catholic religion, belonging to Christianity, has beliefs in life after death. So, if we based on religious beliefs of the author of the poem, we can to say that he wrote the poem “Fear No More the Heat O’ the Sun” thinking in a new life after death, and he used the symmetry as a mean to express his positive thoughts about death. Moreover, other characteristic that makes beauty the poem is rhyme. This poem is composed by four sextuples that have rhymes that give the poem a beautiful sound, making reference that death could a good thing. A sextuple is a six-line stanza of eight-syllable lines rhymed either ababcc or aabccd. In this poem, each stanza is rhymed according the ababcc scheme, which means that the first line verse rhymes with the third, the second line verse rhymes with the fourth and the two last line verses rhyme with each other. It kind of writing the stanzas makes the poem to have musicality. If we read or declaim the poem, we can heard it nice and we can identify that the poem has rhythm, so it property could make us feel good. In this case, the rhythm helped the author express his ideas in a positive way, so we could catch the message about death in a positive way, too. Furthermore, the language of the poem is another important factor in the beauty of the poem. The language is other important aspect that makes the poem more beautiful, and helps to make people forget their fear to death. This poem is too deep and really confusing when we are trying to understand it at first time. It is because the poem was written according to the old English, which corresponds to the English that Shakespeare spoke in the middle age. Although

it is a little bit difficult to understand, the poem’s language is accessible and becomes understandable after reading it many times, so we can understand the author’s message and maybe we can change our point of view. Also, we can appreciate how much beautiful could be the end of life, and we could forget our fear about death. In conclusion, William Shakespeare had positive thoughts about death, which is reflected in the poem “Fear No More the Heat O’ the Sun”. The most important characteristics found in the poem are metaphors, symmetry, rhymes, and language. Metaphors mean that death is a natural event that we should not fear, and the symmetry symbolize that death and life are the same thing. In addition, rhyme and language help to make the poem more beautiful and make that people forget the fear they had about death. So, the poem “Fear No More the Heat O’ the Sun” written by Shakespeare refers to death as something natural that will happen sometime, and that we should not fear because when death comes we are going to rest in peace.

Should Censorship Be Practiced in Schools? Carlos Bustamante Orellana Yachay University of Experimental Technology and Research June 30th, 2016

Should Censorship Be Practiced in Schools? Do you know how many fights and bad behaviors have been avoided by using censorship in schools? Well, many of them have been avoided and indeed schools try to be a good place to study. Nowadays, schools authorities face many challenges when they have to decide if something should be allowed to use in schools. There is a great quantity of works that use inappropriate language for students such as racism or violence. Therefore, censorship should be practiced in schools in order to avoid wrong behaviors in students and unnecessary revolutions. Some works have language for adults and inappropriate terms that can provoke wrong behaviors in students. According to Petress (2005), one book was removed from three junior highschool libraries because of the use of detailed descriptions of sexual activity and drug addiction. It is very clear that the language used in the book, which was removed from highschool libraries, is inappropriate for highschool students because at that age, they are in the process of becoming adult men or women. So, if they read those descriptions of sexual activity and drug addiction, it is possible that they want to experiment with those things. This can provoke pregnant students and even worst, students with problems of drug addiction. Therefore, the use of censorship is necessary in order to avoid works that can cause wrong behaviors in students. The use of some accessories at school can provoke unnecessary revolutions in schools. Some teenagers were punished by black armbands at school in protest of the Vietnam war and incentive their peers to join them (Petress, 2005). If authorities have not act at time, perhaps a great protest was generated, causing suspension in classes and fights between the sides pro and con. So, censorship is very useful to avoid unnecessary fights and suspension of academic activities.

It is possible that people think that censorship violates the right of free expression that students have. Every person has the right to express his or her own ideas and feelings. So, some people think censorship violates the right of free expression because censorship prohibits to students use some accessories, wear some clothes, and even censorship in schools limits the access to some information in libraries. It is understandable that people think that censorship in schools violates students’ rights; however, it is not a violation to students’ rights to prohibit or limit some things. In fact, students can express their own ideas, at least if they do so in a way that does not fundamentally interfere with their school’s function (Petress, 2005). In addition, students can wear whatever they want in their house, the censorship is only at school. It is also important to remark that the use of censorship in schools is for the well-being of students. In conclusion, there are many works that use inappropriate language for students. The use of inappropriate language for students can provoke unexpected behaviors in them. In addition, a revolution can be caused by the use of some accessories. Therefore, censorship should be allowed in schools because the use of censorship is a way of avoiding inappropriate behaviors in students and fights that are not necessary.

FINAL RESEARCH PROJECT essay

Ethics of Using Suspended Animation for People That Are Almost Dead Carlos Bustamante Orellana Yachay University of Experimental Technology and Research July 08th, 2016

Ethics of Using Suspended Animation for People That Are Almost Dead Do you know how many people with penetrating wounds caused by gunshot or knife die because doctors do not have enough time to prepare a surgery? Statistics shows that nine in ten people, who are in those conditions, died (Murphy, 2014). However, there may be a new solution. Suspended animation has been described in many science fiction stories since a long time ago; but, what we considered science fiction in those times, now is becoming a reality. The work of many years of research is finally bearing fruits. Of course, suspended animation of reality does not work like its counterpart of science fiction stories, but it can help to save many lives by freezing people for a few hours until doctors perform a surgery. Therefore, suspended animation should be practiced because it is a safe technique for human beings and it can potentially save many lives. Suspended animation is a procedure that consists in freezing people with penetrating injuries, repairing those injuries, and reanimating them after some hours. To perform the procedure, a large tube is placed right in the patient’s aorta artery, and then, a cold saline solution is pumped through the heart and towards the brain first. The saline solution goes first to the brain because brain is the most susceptible organ and can only survive a few minutes deprived of oxygen. After that, the saline solution is pumped to the whole body, and the remains of blood are extracted (Yang, 2014). The main reasons of pumping a cold saline solution to the body is to keep cells alive and diminish the body temperature. The cold saline solution makes that the body temperature decreases until twentycentigrade degrees less than the normal body temperature (Robson, 2014), so patients would be practically frozen. By doing this procedure, patients will not have blood nor brain activity. The use of this technique will give doctors around two hours to achieve an operation and repair all the damages that the patient has. Finally, saline solution is replaced with blood, and the

patient is reanimated (Yang, 2014). Many experiments have been made in regarding to suspended animation. Experiments conducted on animals have proven that suspended animation is a safe technique. Researchers have made some experiments in pigs with near fatal injuries to show that suspended animation is safe and effective. After pigs came back from suspended animation, they were tested in order to prove that their brain have not been affected by the procedure. The results were that their brain worked as well as before being subjected to the procedure, and that there had not been serious side effects (Robson, 2014). So, researchers have proven that suspended animation is harmless using an animal with an organism very similar to the human organism. Therefore, the procedure should work in human beings as well as it worked in pigs, thus there is no reason to be afraid of this innovative technique. Besides the security of the technique, it is also important to mention that people, who will take the procedure, will be almost dead. The use of suspended animation can help to save a life that is almost lost. According to Murphy (2014) patients with catastrophic penetrating trauma caused by gunshot or knife would be the ideal candidates to be put in suspended animation because they have lost too much blood that they have gone into cardiac arrest, so their probability of surviving is less than ten percent. Therefore, because their probability to survive is very low, people in this situation are almost dead. So, they only have two choices which are being operated at normal circumstances and dying in the process; or subjecting to suspended animation, a technique that have very little risks, and increase their probability of surviving. Of this way, patients with catastrophic penetrating trauma have nothing to lose and a lot to win by taking the procedure. Another reason of the very low probability that a person with penetrating wounds survives is time. The implementation of suspended animation in suitable patients would give doctors more time to make a surgery. Doctors are fighting against time every single day, and the use

of suspended animation would give them the time they need to perform an operation in suitable patients and save their lives. According to Griggs (2014), when patients with penetrating wounds have bled so much that their heart stops, doctors know that they have very little chance of saving those patients. So, in case this happens in suitable patients, the use of suspended animation is necessary. This is because by being subjected to the procedure people would be frozen with a saline solution, which practically would freeze the time for a couple of hours, and it would give doctors enough time to operate patients in order to fix any damage they have. Besides the time, another point in favor of suspended animation is that at low temperature it is easier to repair injuries. Penetrating wounds could be repaired of an easier way and damage to important organs can be avoided if suitable patients are subjected to suspended animation. By inducing hypothermia, which is a drop in body temperature, in patients through the replacement of blood by a cold saline solution, the bleeding would stop and swelling could be reduced or prevented (Warmflash, 2015). Therefore, the use of the procedure would give doctors a great advantage because they would not have to deal with bleeding when they are performing an operation, which would provoke more precise and clean works. Of this way, the probability of making mistakes in an operation would be reduced, and the patient would have more chances to survive. In addition, the use of the technique avoids that both heart and brain suffer damage. Because the hearth has stopped in patients with catastrophic penetrating trauma, brain can only survive a few minutes (Yang, 2014). So, the use of suspended animation would avoid that the brain dies and the heart can resume beating after reanimation because injuries would be repaired. There may be people who argue that doctors practically will kill patients without their permission in order to prove a technique that does not give them any guaranty to survive. That way of thinking can be generated because suspended animation only could be applied in people

with catastrophic penetrating trauma caused by gunshot or knife, so they cannot decide whether or not to take the procedure because it is possible that they are unconscious. In addition, another cause of the concern that some people have about suspended animation is that after patients have been put in suspended animation, they would be clinically dead because they would not accomplish the necessary requirements to be alive. So, they think that people will not be the same after waking, or even worse, they do not wake up. People can decide to subject themselves or not to suspended animation in the future when they are in good conditions. It is true that some patients will be unconscious and they will not be able to decide whether or not to take the procedure at that moment. However, according to Warmflash (2015), people can sign a form specifically requesting that they do not want to be included in the study of the technique. So, doctors are not going to apply something new if the patient have not approved it before. Furthermore, it is important to remark that it is very possible that patients with catastrophic penetrating trauma die if they do not take the procedure because doctors have very limited time perform an operation before the patient’s brain is affected. Plus to the patient’s approval, suspended animation process has been studied in depth to make it as safe as possible. Experts have already considered all the risks of suspended animation in order to ensure the safety of people subjected to the procedure. Scientists have made many experiments, and the results have determined that suspended animation is safe to be applied in humans. For example, some experiments in pigs with near-fatal injuries have shown that suspended animation is safe and effective. Pigs proved to have almost no side effects after being waken up from suspended animation and the most important, all of them woke up (Robson, 2014), so there is no reason to be worried about this technique because the safety of people is guaranteed. In conclusion, suspended animation is a safe procedure that can be applied to human beings because some experiments have demonstrated that side effects are almost nonexistent

after an organism wakes up. This technique can also help to save lives that are almost lost because suspended animation would only be applied in specific cases with patients that have a very little possibility of surviving. In addition, by using this procedure doctors will have more time than they usually have to perform a surgery. Although there are some concerns about the use of this technique, experts have already studied all the risks and have designed a safe technique. So, even though real suspended animation is far away of its counterpart of science fiction stories, it can save many human lives. Therefore, suspended animation ought be practiced because it is a safe procedure for people and can save many lives. Suspended animation technique is safe for people and can help to save patients with little chance of surviving. In order to prove the effectivity of the procedure, an experiment conducted on pigs with near-fatal injuries was made. The experiment demonstrated that brain is not affected by the procedure and that there are not meaningful side effects. Patients with catastrophic penetrating trauma caused by gunshot or knife are the ideal candidates to be put in suspended animation because the probability that they survive is less than one in ten. Finally, this technique will help battle one of the greatest problems that doctors face everyday, which is time, and avoid damage to important organs.
