Dear Portfolio Reader,
Three years ago, approximately, I arrived at Yachay with my goals very clear, and one of them was learning to speak English fluently. At the beginning, the experience was very hard because my first teacher spoke in English and the majority of my classmates understood him, but I did not understand him. As a result, I felt stressed and sad because that experience was very hard for me, and also because I had received 13 years of English classes in my school and high school, so I also felt defrauded. However, as the days went on, I was getting used to that big change because my nature has always been to overcome the obstacles and I have always been proud of myself for that. Today, I am less than two months from fulfilling one of my greatest goals, communicating in the English language. My writing, listening, and speaking have improved and that is just a result of my constant practice and effort. On the other hand, during the last level of English, which was one of the hardest, I have improved my level of English. It was entertaining because I really like writing and speaking in front of the public, and for that, I am happy because, now I can do what I like in another language.
First of all, writing is one of my favorite hobbies and I tried to do my best. During this semester, writing was one of the most important activities. I had to write essays, paragraphs, and a research paper about any interesting topic, so I chose something related to the education of children because it is an essential topic for me. Also, I spend a lot of time writing, because I like
to write and I am looking for perfection, and that was reflected in my grades which were improving every time. On the other hand, I have realized that my writing is better because during the semester I have learned about grammatical errors, APA format and the correct structure of a good essay, so I also have learned a lot. In addition, every achievement that I had, helped me to improve my writing. Also, I spend my time writing stories for children, but I just do this in Spanish language, so in a near future, the English language is going to help me reach out to more children around the world. As a result, I know that language is not going to be a limitation for me and that situation makes me happy because one of my greatest dreams is to write for children.
As a second point, speaking is important for me because I learn how to express my ideas. Other important activities used to improve my English were presentations. The presentations were difficult and it took a lot of effort, but I think I gave the best and I got good results. However, one of the obstacles I had in these activities was teamwork. I have always considered myself a person who seeks to obtain my best results individually, and therefore, I consider teamwork sometimes difficult. Although there were many presentations that involved working as a team, I realized that everything depends on each team having a good leader. Finally, I believe that my vocabulary has been enriched. This is the biggest advantage that I got along out these four months. The reason is that with a larger vocabulary, I can express my ideas more easily and better, so that others understand what I am saying. Before, it was difficult for me to express my opinions and I did not know how to formulate them, so I preferred to remain silent. Now, I am surprised by the ability I acquired to express my opinions, and that makes me happy because I like to express my ideas and that people hear me and then question me. In addition, as I mentioned before, the issues related to children and the critical issues with it are very interesting for me, and for that reason, I always try to leave messages in the audience that I am addressing. I know that managing the English language is a very important tool for forging my future, and in truth, I am happy to have fulfilled this goal since I know that I succeeded.
To conclude, I cannot miss the opportunity to thank with all my heart those who gave me this great opportunity, my teachers. Stalin Avila, Tyson Umberger, Monik Vinueza, Mathew Mackey, Hamilton Quezada, and Mark Poese. All of you have contributed greatly to my training and I am infinitely grateful to everyone. In addition, you have made me grow as a person, each one of you in different ways. Furthermore, when I arrived in Yachay, I considered English to be one of my greatest obstacles. Now, it has become a great tool and for this reason, I will continue to practice and opening new horizons. What I have left of this experience, apart from the knowledge and values acquired, is that I have confirmed to myself that all effort has its reward.

Censorship, A Good and Bad Tool.
In the world, a lot of information is available for us, and people have many different tools to obtain that information. Additionally, there exist different kinds of information which can be good or bad depending on the way that we use it. Also, we as human beings, have the right of using information because it can help us to expand our knowledge. However, nowadays, thousands of people around the world do not have access to certain information, and that situation is violating their rights. Governments in many countries around the world are controlling their citizens and the flux of information and ideas, which is a critical problem because human beings have the freedom to expand our knowledge and ideas using information as a powerful tool.
First, people can improve themselves and expand their ideas using information from different sources. Every person has created their ideas thanks to the information they receive. As a result, we could develop ourselves and expand our knowledge using information. Now, when governments limit information to their citizens, they are causing a critical problem. I disagree that the actions that governments have in order to hide the reality from people. Also, when citizens are limited by governments, their rights are violated.
Second, the information that allow people to know about the reality of the world must be free to read. Governments use their power as a tool for limiting populations. For example, China has forbidden its citizens the free access to important information, because the government wants to preserve its reputation. In this case, this is a real example of violence to the human rights. In china, people do not have social networks because they are tools for expanding bad news about government. People have the responsibility of using information searches for the benefit of the rest.
As a mentioned before, humanity has a great quantity of information in the net, but it can be bad or good. There exists good information about scientific achievements, books, research papers, or something about problems around the world, and this information helps people to know about our reality. However, there exists bad information which is free. For example, violence and drugs, homophobic pages, and pornography. Now, in this case, I agree that the governments must use censorship because that is a good way for avoiding that these industries around the world generate money.
Finally, societies around the world have the critical problem of limitation of information from the governments. I disagree with this situations because citizens should have the freedom of having knowledge about the reality of the world. Another reason is that when a government forbids its citizens to provide themselves with information, its knowledge is not developing. Also, governments need to know that their power to decide over people id violating the human rights.

Languages Can Influence the Way People Live and Think Verรณnica Quilumba Yachay Tech University
Author Note EPL - L6 - 018
Abstract
While people is growing, the manner in which they see the world is changing. According to Lera Boroditsky, languages are a human gift and they are useful in the life of every person in the world. With languages people can express their thoughts, feelings or ideas. However, languages can shade the way people think and, consequently, their behavior. In the following text, a bigger view point is showed, analyzing some advantages and disadvantages about language and how it influence the human thought.
Keywords: languages, thoughts, influence, human thought.
Languages Can Influence the Way People Live and Think Introduction
Languages influence our manner to see the world. There are thousands of different languages in the world and, as a result, thousands of different thoughts. Since people learn to talk, they are influenced to see the world in a different manner. Besides, a lot of things in the environment have different meaning depending on the language. Therefore, the way people think and the way they see the world can be influence by language at the moment of appreciate everything in their environment.
Research Questions The research question to be examined is the following:
How does our language shape the way we think?
Literature Review
Individuals change their thinking since they learn to talk. First of all, when every person born, they see the world that surround them as a group of things without name or definition. Then, while they are growing up, they can define everything how they want. However, when individuals are starting to learn a language, they need to change what they define already. For example, it is very common find different names of things in stories for children. The moon as a cheese or stars like lamps; those comparisons are forms of see the world before to learn their real names of real definitions. Then, the imaginary mint of a child is changed by an imminent reality obtained to talk which is important in their life.
Language is indispensable for every individual. As a second point, when individuals are able to talk, they have a lot of advantages that people who do not have the ability to talk. As Lira Boroditsky said: “Language is a uniquely human gift, central to our experience of being human. Appreciating its role in constructing our mental live brings us one step closer to understanding the very nature of humanity. Humans around the world meet their environment with every world they learn. However, things are known differently depending on the language.
On the other hand, time, space, gender, and others can be understanding in different manner and that situation can influence significantly human lives. Also, it can be possible that the languages that do not differentiate time in present and future are more effective. For example, people who speak Spanish, are used to thinking of past, present and future (there are a lot of conjugations for these three times); yet in other languages there is no future tense. For example, in Spanish we say "Ana is having lunch" or "Ana will go to lunch", which gives us a picture of how the situation is being given; but if somebody was in China, he or she would say simply "Ana lunch". Therefore, the process of learning another language can be simpler. Additionally, a study carried out by the Yale Business School where researchers analyzed data from 76 countries focusing on issues such as saving, exercise habits or consumption of snuff, it was found that speakers of languages timeless make better decisions. [1]
According to the research made by Boroditsky, in an Aboriginal community named Pormpuraaw, the locals Kuuk Thaayorre use cardinal directions terms to talk about space, instead "right," "left," "forward," and "back," which are commonly used in English. Then, it is evident that the locals Kuuk Thaayorre have a different way to see the world and everything related with the space. The reason is that language influences our thinking, reaching shape our perception of the world and how we relate to it.
However, there is a problem with respect to gender differentiation of things. It has been proven by several studies in countries where a language gender difference exists, women's participation in work is reduced by around 12%; unlike the countries where the language is not oriented to sexual differentiation where the participation of women in the workplace increases even up to 3%. [2]
As a third point, a problem related to the etymology exists. Languages are useful because people can communicate their ideas and thoughts, but there is a big problem with the meaning of each word that people learn. For example, all that exists and people know, to be defined in one word, can generated disagreements. Religion, family, education, man, women, God, feminisms, machismo, freedom, and others are some examples of words that to be defined, generate discussions. This situation is due to education that people receive since they are children. Also, problems such as vandalisms and disappointments can be caused by a bad use of words and, consequently, a bad communication. People need to learn the true meaning of each word for expressing their ideas correctly.
Conclusion
To sum up, people can be influenced by languages because it manages the way in which people see everything in their environments. There are a lot of different languages around the word. Also, every world can help us to express our ideas and thoughts. Problems mentioned in this text such as bad communication, the change of mind in children and the incorrect meaning of each word must be avoided for having a better communication between humans. Besides, languages must be a tool for knowing our world and between humans. It is evident that languages influence in the life and the way of thinking of each individuals.

“The Hands of the Protest, the Prayer and the Cry of the Ecuadorian Painter Guayasamin
Through painting, we can express our emotions and the reality in which we live. This was the main purpose of Oswaldo Guayasamin, an outstanding Ecuadorian painter, who through the artistic movement "The Cubism" succeeded in translating into each of his pictorials works the social, political and personal problems of human beings. We can highlight the talent of Guayasamin in one of his most valuable pictorial works, "The Hands of Protest," a work belonging to the project "The Age of Wrath." Additionally, lovers of cubist art from the works of Oswaldo Guayasamin will be able to discover in "The Hands of
Protest," the result of the thought of a lifetime. Also, the message that Oswaldo shouts in his paintings throughout a career is dedicated to the sensitivity for the most unprotected beings, and for that reason “The Hands of the Protest” is a mixture between a prayer and a cry.
"My painting is of two worlds. From the skin to the inside it is a cry against racism and poverty, and from the skin to the outside is the synthesis of the time that I had to live." (O. Guayasamin)
Oswaldo Guayasamín, the son of an indigenous father and a mestiza mother, was born in Quito on July 6, 1919. He started to draw when he was a child, and his talent excelled at a tender age. Oswaldo spent his time drawing caricatures of his classmates and teachers when he was eight years old, and that situation gave him fame among his friends and instructors. In addition, he sold his pictures to foreigners, and with that money he paid for his studies in the “Escuela de Bellas Artes” in Quito. When he was 20 years old, he won a scholarship to study arts and the opportunity to expose his pictorial works in Mexico. Years later, when he was 36 years old, he won the Great Prize of the Spanish-American Biennial in Barcelona and later the Great Prize of the Biennial of Sao Paulo.
Guayasamin did several humanist works where he reflected and expressed pain and misery that the society of his generation endured. He also denounced, through his pictorial work, the violence between human beings during the 20th century marked by world wars, civil wars, genocide, concentration camps, dictatorships, and torture. As a result of his work, Guayasamin marked the tendency of the social realism, and he became a reference of the Ecuadorian painting in the world.
“My painting is to hurt, to scratch and strike in the hearts of people. To show what man does against.” (O. Guayasamin). Through his pictures, Guayasamin searched for justice in society and a better life for all. For example, one of his most important collections of his pictorial stages is “The Age of Wrath” which contains the painting “The Hands of the Protest.” In the art sense, Oswaldo Guayasamin shows the despair of human beings against problems that affect them. Also, it reflects the misery that most of humanity suffers and denounces, the poverty, the corruption, the pain of a mother who loses her son due to the war, and the abuse of power of people who believed themselves superior to the others.
“I know that examples of physical and mental torture, of everyday crimes, are more or less known. But there is another form of official torture, less visible, less known, but more devastating, that aims at the same goal: the destruction of our peoples, annihilating our culture, making them consumers of products and concepts elaborated thousands of kilometers from our countries, in that total war that fascism has once again declared to culture.” (O. Guayasamin)
As Guayasamin said, there exists another type of war that annihilates the culture of our peoples, and we saw that in “The Hands of the Protest.” On the one hand, we saw the signs of despair in a human face and the position of two hands which cry silently for help for our world that is crumbling because of the ambitious man who consumes his mother earth. On the other hand, the battered hands of the man, the color of his skin and his facial features, bring to our minds the image of our indigenous peoples. These people are characterized by their hard work every day to achieve a "dignified" life that in the past was and nowadays is remunerated with unjust salaries. In addition, it reminds us of their future that is taken away by those who think themselves superior, the great landowners who nowadays disguise themselves as politicians; the picture reminds us of his struggle for equality and liberation.
As we mentioned before, “The Hands of the Protest” is part of “The Age of the Wrath,” and for that reason, it reflects the catastrophe. It also reflects the loss of lives of human beings under the ambition of individuals with the thirst for power for governing our planet causing violence, wars, and injustices. The color at the bottom of the picture gives us a feeling of sadness. The blue color gives us the idea of a man who has suffered and who has repressed his feelings for fear of being judged. Also, the mixture between blue and black shows us the sadness due to the slavery of our indigenous peoples and their culture.
“In spite of everything, we have not lost faith in man, in his ability to rise and build; because art covers life. It is a way of loving.” (O. Guayasamin). Finally, Oswaldo Guayasamin tried to give us a message represented by a cry which protests for freedom and justice for all those who have been repressed; a cry against the discrimination of aborigine peoples. Additionally, Guayasamin achieves to connect his feelings with the viewer and makes that the viewer feel the author feelings with the purpose of transmitting a profound message of protest.
To conclude, the pictorial work done by Oswaldo Guayasamin, “The Hands of the Protest,” shows the sensitivity that Guayasamin had for the most unprotected beings. Also, this is evident because the painting shows a desperate man who cries for the injustice of society. “The Hands of the Protest” is proof of the great talent that Guayasamin had, and we believe that his pictorials leave us a legacy of love for art.

Abstract
While children are growing up, they lose their creativity due the education that they receive from adults. It is a critical problem because the success of children in the future depends on their creativity, skills and human values. This research analyzes the four major problems that make education that adults offer their children a bad tool. These problems are the minimizing of the skills of children from adults, the correction of children when they are wrong, the excess of unnecessary tools, and the maturity of parents that slow it down the development in children. As a result, it is necessary to change the education that children receive from adults. On the other hand, it is essential to study this topic because children play an important role in society which will be productive in all areas if people who form it have been educated correctly.

Adults Kill Creativity and Skills in Children Due to the Limited Education They Offer
Childhood is the most important part in the life of a human being, because in this stage humans develop their creativity, skills, and human values. On the one hand, every child has a great opportunity to have a successful future due to their progress in the development of their abilities. On the other hand, we have an opposite viewpoint created by the influence of adults and the limitation they apply on their children. As a result, adults have created a critical problem, that is, while children are growing up, they are losing their creativity due the education that they receive from adults. Additionally, this research about the limitation in children from adults is relevant because everybody knows that children play an important role in society which will be productive in all areas if people who form it have been educated correctly. It is necessary to change the education that children receive from adults for having better individuals and, as a result, better societies. The main cause of the lack of creativity, skills and human values in children is due to the education they receive from adults, and the solution is to change the type of education adults offer.
The first problem is that adults can minimize the skills of children when they try to teach them to think how they think and to do what they do. “Family is a critically important influence on, and quite possibly the major force behind, the etiology of creative behavior. (Dacey,1989) Related to what Dacey mentioned, the abilities of children depend on the education they receive from their homes, because they can go to school, but the education of schools must be complemented at homes. From the mentioned idea, it is a fact that children can lose their freedom to create and think depending on the education that they receive from adults inside and outside their homes.
On the one hand, adults should teach children to develop their skills using diverse activities that help children to expand their abilities. On the other hand, adults should not enforce
children to do something that they do not want to do or something that they do not want to think. This idea refers to the limitation that children receive from adults at the moment of choosing what they really want to do, or to think. For example, parents want their children to be productive people in the future, then at a tender age, parents see their children as lawyers, doctors, or scientists. The problem is that parents convince their children to be what they want, but children should not worry about their future; they should be children and live in present.
The second problem lies in how parents correct their children when they are wrong. According to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry:
“A role model is a person who serves as an example by influencing others. For many children, the most important role models are their parents and caregivers. Children look up to a variety of role models to help shape how they behave in school, relationships or when making difficult decisions. Children also look up to other relatives, teachers and peers. Children may try to copy the behavior and appearance of celebrities, such as athletes and entertainers, and characters from books, TV, movies and video games.(AACAP, 2011)
Most parents do not realize that the actions of their children are the reflection of the behavior that adults have in front of them. As a result, parents correct their children incorrectly because they follow a model of rebuke based only on the word and not on the example. Accordingly with AACAP, it is necessary for parents to educate their children by providing them with a good behavioral model that begins with adults, so that children will repeat these good behaviors. Additionally, parents need to be careful with the actions their children see. Nowadays, children are exposed to the excess of information coming from different media such as TV, radios, newspapers, schools, and people outside their homes. There exists negative role models which may also influence children, and they are very popular. Young children may
assume that the behaviors of negative role models are typical, safe and acceptable. Parents and caregivers can intervene by emphasizing that role models that embrace inappropriate behavior, violence, sexuality, race and gender stereotypes, and drug and alcohol abuse are not acceptable.
The third problem arises from the lack of tools that encourage the skills of children and the excess of tools that slow it down. According to the newspaper El Universo, during the national census carried out in Ecuador in 2012, children under the age of ten have access to the use of technology. Part of the results from this census shows that 43.9% of children use computers, 28.1% have internet and 3.7%, cell phones. However, the problem is not in these statistics, but in the use that children can give these tools. One of the clearest examples is the generation of dependency between the child and a cell phone, computer, tablet or television. Nowadays, some children are obsessed when they are unable to communicate uninterrupted, are constantly checking for messages and become irritable if they have to be away from their phone for any period of time.
On the other side, children are connected about eight hours per day to the TV, social networks, phones, computers, videogames, or internet. This was the alert of a dramatic reality showed by a study about the habits of children in United States, and it was done by the Kaiser Family Foundation. Also, the results give some interesting features about how children are connected to the mentioned media:
1. Fewer children are reading magazines and newspapers, although reading this type of online media has increased.
2. About 50 percent of children use media while they are doing their homework. 3. Girls spend more time on social networking sites, listening to music and reading than boys.
4. Boys spend more time than girls using video games, computer games, or on YouTube or other sites watching videos.
5. The use of the media increases dramatically when children reach eleven. From these results, is easy to conclude that children are growing in an environment that is not helping with their development. It is obvious that children prefer to spend their time using technology instead reading books, drawing, dancing, creating stories, or discovering the nature. Additionally, the cause of this problem is that parents do not spend time with their children in the different activities mentioned before, and they simply they do not have time for their children.
The fourth problem refers to the fact that children must behave as children, and the maturity of parents must not affects their childhood. The idea of this problem is easy to understand if we compare the behavior of an adult and the behavior of a child. There exists a lot of differences, and those differences can cause problems in the development of children. However, adults may decline those problem using their own imagination. For example, Dave Devries has created The Monster Engine, a project based in the realistic illustration of monster imagined by children. This is a great strategy to combine the imagination of children and the imagination of adults in order to improve the creative abilities in children.
According Dave Devries:
“Children are more creative and are natural inventors. Their worldview is incomplete and demands discovery. They prosper because they embrace their ignorance instead of ignoring it. And they are willing to explore, investigate and put their ideas to the test because they are willing to fail. Unlike adults, they don’t care how other people perceive or evaluate their ideas, and they’re unconcerned with the impossible or what doesn’t work.” (Dave Devries, 2015)
Related to what Dave Devries said, children do not care about what people think about their behavior, or what they think or express, but adults are worried about what people think about themselves, and that situation limits them. The great problem lies in the fact that adults also are affected about what people think about the behavior of their children, and for that reason, parents limit their actions. Therefore, children are not going to be free to discover their talents because they are growing up thinking that everything they do is wrong. In addition, they are going to grow up with the fear of expressing what they think, and this situation is evident mainly in the classrooms. It is best to listen to what our children think and admire what they do, because in this way we encourage their self-esteem so that they grow as self-confident individuals.
As a final point, it is important to change the education that parents offer to their children in order to have better individuals for society. Education is one of the most important tools for forging de future of children and making productive individuals for society, but it also depends on the type of education that children receive from adults. On the other hand, education in school is important for the development of children, but more important is the education they receive at home by adults.
Growing up, to be sure, has its benefits. As we age, our intellect sharpens and willpower strengthens. We come to control our thoughts and desires. We identify goals and hone our skills. But growing up comes at a cost: we lose our naivetĂŠ that facilitates creativity and idea generation. Picasso was right: “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist
once we grow up. (Dave Devries, 2015)
Based on the four main problems raised above, it is necessary to change the model of education that children receive at home in order to solve these problems and avoid the lack of creativity, skills or values in children. It is necessary for parents to spend time with their
children doing activities to develop their skills such as drawing, painting, dancing, and discovering nature and human values. In addition, it should be the duty of parents to educate their children by example, so that when the child is mistaken, he realizes that what he or she did was wrong. Otherwise, if adults make the same mistakes, children will think it is okay and normal. Additionally, parents should allow their children to behave as such, following their instincts, their innocence and imagination; they cannot be limited by the maturity of adults.
However, children need to be educated for a real future. It is a fact that children have a large capacity to imagine and create, but they need to address the problems of the real future. If children are not educated with the knowledge and the rigorousness of an adult, they will fail in the imminent future. In addition, adults have much experience based on what they have lived, and they should teach children how to act although this situation limits them and their capacity to see the world in a different manner. It is necessary to educate children following the profile of an adult.
Adults know how the world works and they will guide children to a real future, because if children grow up without the influence of adults, they will not know how to deal with problems. For this reason, children will be limited and their ability to be creative or their ability to imagine will disappear over time. However, they will have the great advantage excelling in a difficult future.
To conclude, children are growing up losing their creativity due to the education that they receive from adults; for that reason, it is necessary to change that education. The incorrect education that adults offer to their children can create several problems that avoid or slow down the development of skills, creativity and human values in children. Also, bad education that adults offer is evident when adults minimize the skills of children when they try to teach them to think how they think and to do what they do. Other evidences is to seen in how parents correct
their children when they are wrong, the lack of tools that encourage the skills in children and the excess of tools that slow it down, and how the maturity of parents affects their childhood. Every evidence complement the idea that it is important change the education that parents offer to their children in order to have better individuals for society. Finally, society needs to consider the mentioned evidences as critical problems because the success of children in the future depends on their creativity, skills, and human values, and also because children are the basis for the future.
