PORTFOLIO LETTER A SEMESTER DEVELOPING MY ENGLISH SKILLS
4
Andrés Riofrío Valdivieso. 212-212 Urcuquí, Imbabura, Ecuador.
December 8, 2015
Dear Portfolio Reader,
Thank you for reading my English Language Portfolio. It is a collection of my English works in the six level in Yachay Tech. So, I could elaborate this portfolio after years of studied English and I feel very happy because I never thought that I could learn English when I was child. I didn’t like watched English movies or listened English music; however, when I was in high school, I had a necessity to start learning English but I needed private teachers because learned this language was very difficult to me; so, I feel very grateful with myself and my English teachers that could help me in this way in spite of I know that the English learning never could finish because always there are new things to learn. Therefore, in this portfolio, I attached all the works that are part of the results to learnt English since I was in the high school such as infographic, response essay, interpretation presentation and research paper that let me increase my knowledge about academic writing and how to do a presentation. The infographic work was one of the first works that we have in the English six with our teacher Ercilia Delancer. The teacher introduced first to us with information about her and how was her life before to come Yachay; so, we could learn that our teacher born in the Dominican Republic, she immigrated to the United States when she was 19, she completes her studies in its country, she has a scattered family, she loves books and drink a good strong
5
coffee. Therefore, after learned about our teacher. We could introduce at our classmates; so, we worked in piktochart.com that is a webpage that our English teacher recommended to create our presentation and could introduce easier to us; then, this was one of the first work that permit better our speaking and knowledge about our classmates. The next work that I like to speak is the response essay that permit create a refutation of one article, research or video in this case the refutation was about education. We did a refutation at the article wrote by George Leef named Don't Buy the Hype. College Education Is Not an Investment and the TED video named Forget University? 4 steps to design your own education by Till H. This response essay was my first bad grade in this six level of English because in spite of I investment a lot time understanding the article and video I needed give more attention at the structure of a response assay; so, is important to me because in the life we need learned about our mistakes and after of that mistake I was creating in my mind that I need think first about what is the essay that I am writing and after this I could create my introduction and all the structure that has an essay. A group work that with my classmate did in the six semester was the interpretation presentation. So, in order to create this interpretation essay we needed to choice one piece of art and speak about it. Therefore, with my group decided to choose an Ecuadorian artist how was Oswaldo HuayasamĂn with his paint named Ternura (Tenderness) because this painter represent the love of the mothers and the discrimination that could receive the indigene’s mothers. Then, in this portfolio you could find this homework that was important to me because I could learn how work in group and how create an essay that has all our opinions. Finally, my final work was a research assay that all the level six students was creating since started the classes in September, this homework was of five pages and has our knowledge of English because personally I think that I investment a lot time searching material that could help me in the investigation about the English knowledge. So, I needed
6
search in a lot English documents in order to understand the English Ecuadorian problem, but after read and read I could create at document that involve the actual English problem with some possible forms to escape the problem for be a bilingual country. So, this homework is very important because the students used all the knowledge to searched and wrote an essay. In conclusion, this portfolio is a form to demonstrate all that I learnt since high school; so, I started writing my life in the infographic in order to introduce me at my classmates. After I could learn how create a response essay analyzing firstly the structure that needed have for it. Other different essay that I wrote was the interpretation of a work art that I did with my group of class in order to present about Oswaldo Huasamín and his paint named in English Tenderness that show the love of mother and discrimination of indigenous people. Finally, In the English class every student write a research paper that is our final work that represent that we could read and understand different topics. So, this semester we could increase our writing and speaking with essays and presentations; for this reason, is very important to approve English six in Yachay Tech in order to take science classes. Thank you again for reading my portfolio. I put in a great deal of effort into my portfolio, and I hope you enjoy reading it. I am confident that you will agree with me that I have become more proficient in English and I am ready to pursue my career.
Sincerely,
Andrés Riofrío.

Running head: IMPORTANCE OF A COLLEGE DEGREE
Importance of a College Degree in Our Professional Life Andrés Riofrío Yachay University of Experimental Technology and Research
9
IMPORTANCE OF A COLLEGE DEGREE Importance of a College Degree in Our Professional Life Degree of college could be important for your curriculum; however, the college degree is not guarantee of secure employment. Depending of your future job is necessary to obtain a college degree because we know that there are works how carpenter, chef and salesperson that not demanding a college certificate; on other hand, to have a college degree does not equal to have knowledge because there are terrible college that are not qualified to teach; for this reason, in Ecuador was closing around ten universities. So, we need to understand that there are people without studies, but with good knowledge and people with college degree without knowledge about their professional job; therefore, we need focused in say that universities and government don’t need sell us the idea of good college degree is same that good job. The essay is else focus in say that best grades is not meaning of best skills in the job. Good relationship between college degree and good job could exist 40 years ago, because had a degree college was equal that had good job. Currently, the students need new skills that are not to develop in the university; therefore, saying that to have a college degree is equal to have a job is incorrect. George Leef (2013) in his article “Don't buy The Hype, College Education is not an Investment”, explained the relation between college and job: “The technique of this study (and dozens like it) is to compare average earnings of workers who have college degrees with average earnings of workers who don’t and conclude that because the first group does significantly better, having gone to college was a good investment. That analysis is extremely Misleading from data based on earnings for college graduates going decades back. Conditions today, both with regard to college academic rigor and the labor market, are much different than they were 40 years ago”.
10
IMPORTANCE OF A COLLEGE DEGREE So, our thinking to obtain a job need to focus in the skills and knowledge that could make us better workers because there are professions that don´t need a college degree for example bartender or chef. The Ecuadorian government promoted technologies; however, the government could see that there are people with excellent grades in gastronomy and terrible skills in this profession. The job is different than college and we could see how brilliant school people could not develop skills how group work, be leader or work under stress. In other words, until the Ecuadorian government has the idea that certificate is synonym of job, but it does not have implemented laws that said that you need have a specific college degree for certain jobs; above all, there is not a law that you need at least one technology for some work. For this reason, could be better work to learn gastronomy than study a gastronomy technology. So, if we observe chef profession without college degree we observe that they are under stress all time, they are multitasking, they are a leader, and they know management people. They could increase their skills in the daily life work, because they started cleaned the kitchen, washing the dishes, cutting hundreds and hundreds of potatoes. The chef without college degree first worked in all the places of a cook for five, seven or more years. So, is really difficult to compare a chef with college degree with a chef without college degree because both have knowledge about the kitchen; however, is more easy know chefs with college degree that could not be leaders, work under stress or could not be management because they could to have best grades but their college does not develop the most important skills. We need take the education in our hands because the education is a tool to developed our professional skills and knowledge. A correct form to developed our knowledge is studding with responsibility because we expend our time and economical resources. So, if we like study in a college is necessary be sure that we could to obtain the correct knowledge and
11
IMPORTANCE OF A COLLEGE DEGREE specific skills as work under stress and work group. We need else accept that is more easy search a job with a college degree, but we need be sure that we develop our professional skills too. However, although study is good for our jobs, is necessary put in practice our knowledge for increase our capacities. Till GroB in his TED talk `` Forget University? 4 steps to design your own education ´´, explain that when we took with professional people he always says that is necessary put the knowledge in practice because they know that is important acquire new abilities. The professional people know that you only could learn in the real job because they know that each person has their own interests that could contrasted with ours such as get a promotion. Therefore, to progress in the professional field is necessary investigate which skill is necessary to develop for be a competitive people. In conclusion, the idea that knowledge is same that good job is sell for some universities and governments that does not adjusted at the actual moment of the employers that like skill people with ideas that could develop the industry and does not like people with a lot of knowledge without important abilities such as work in group. For this reason, it is important after to expend money in a major to know if it is really necessary study in the college and all the benefits that we could obtain in order to develop our professional life.

CRITICAL ANALYSIS THE STORY OF AN HOUR
Critical Analysis the Story of an Hour The attitudes when we fail at our couple in the marriage could be as similar as in 1894. According to Kate Chopin (1894) in her story “The Story of an Hour” She tell us how could be her attitudes when she widows at 32 years of age and how could be the attitudes when some people widow. Therefore, in the story of Chopin we observe that is difficult to accept when our partner is dead. The people could take his life differently than when they have their partner and the people do not think on bad moments. When our partner is dead could be difficult try to comprehend that our partner does not live with us more time. Such as in the story we read after that the partner is dead “… paralyzed inability to accept its significance” (Chopin, 1894). Because she knew that accept this information is difficult because we do not idea about how take this notice because we do not think what could happen if our partner die. For this reason, we act differently. We change our life style. Possible we do not like feel love again. When we lost, our partner is possible that we like run at another city where we do not think in our dead partner. In the story, we read that is possible found our dead partner anywhere “… but she felt it, creeping out of the sky, reaching towards her through the sound” (Chopin, 1894). So, we could travel to another country or city because we like forget at our dead partner but is difficult forget these feelings, on the other hand, we do not know if we really had felt love by our couple. When we fail one person we don’t think if we had knowledge about our feelings by the person that is die. We could read in the story “… and yet she had loved him sometimes often she had not” (Chopin, 1894). Therefore, the author said that him miss her wife how other people miss his couple but the people only focus in the feeling and the people does not think how was the story with their partner.
16
CRITICAL ANALYSIS THE STORY OF AN HOUR In conclusion, when somebody have failed at their couple does not like accept that he or she is dead. Could be possible they like go to other place or country where they do not have these feelings because they only think in the moment that was happy with his or her partner. For this reason, is necessary have a thinking that we could have a new life to enter in a new chapter of our lives.

20
TENDERNESS AN ARTISTIC EXPRESSION Interpretation Essay: Ternura (Tenderness) Artistic Expression of 20th Century in Ecuador “I dream my painting and I paint my dream.” - Vincent Van Gogh Ecuadorian identity is characteristic for a high cultural richness. Over time Ecuador has lived different times in the past Ecuadorian society suffered in highest levels poverty, discrimination and illiterate. One important aspect that it helped them to forgot it is the art in the way to express the discontent of all the population. A person who is a figure against the discrimination of natives is Oswaldo Guayasamín. He is a successful artist and characterized for his cubist style. He was born in Quito-Ecuador, his family was poor, and he was the eldest of ten siblings. In general, his pieces of art are known to develop topics such as discrimination, poverty, love and anger. Tenderness is one of the most relevant work of Guayasamin it was painted in 1989 and is an oil painting. Tenderness is an artistic expression of 20th century in Ecuador because it represents discrimination to natives, poverty extreme and mother’s love toward her sons. In this way, “Ternura” could be considered such as a way to express feelings of the real life of Ecuadorian mothers because in the painting is possible view feelings such as love, comprehension and tenderness. Ternura painting is part of work of art named Mientras Viva Siempre te Recordaré (While I Live I Will Always Remember You) and allows the mother love. Oswaldo Guayasamín’s work is divided in three parts each of one is characterized such as three different periods of Guayasmín’s life. The first one is named “Huacayañan”, it is a quechua word that means El Camino del Llanto (The way of Tears) all of this pieces of art represent the suffering of indigenous society and express bitter feelings. The second one is angry period constituted by 100 pieces of art, Guayasamín tried to express the feelings that natives suffered at the moment to fight against discrimination and racism. The third one is period of Tenderness that consist in a praise of all Ecuadorian mothers, the pieces of art show feelings such as love, comprehension, tenderness and happiness.
21
TENDERNESS AN ARTISTIC EXPRESSION Tenderness represent the mother’s love. According to María Otero, “the paintings in this series were homage to Oswaldo Guayasamín mother and to all the mothers of the word” (2011). Because he felt a lot of respect for the woman that was discriminated in this period. In the painting is possible observe the feelings of mother because her eyes expresses love, tenderness, comprehension. On the other hand, the child’s eyes show ingenuousness while her mother embraces him. Furthermore, it is possible to observe how the child is in the center of her mother allowing us to remember the pregnancy moment and how in its moment the mothers feel love for her children despite in the picture she is undernourished. Guayasamin fought to discrimination for being indigenous roots, and against what his father imposed on him not to paint (Otero, 2011). He showed the problems that were happening in Ecuador in the XX century such as the abuse and suffering, which caused on him a trauma. Guayasamin reflected on his painting the fear that they had felt by social discrimination. It explains how the mother with the head leaning protects her child firmly with her arms, and the child is scared and transmits a concern for what will happen. In the past indigenous people suffered a lot of discrimination and Guayasamín tried to fight it, today the racism and discrimination have been reduced thanks people such as Oswaldo. However, differences continue being high in this indigenous population but artistic expression is an opportunity to protest against injustice. In the 20th century in Ecuador, if people were indigenous race, they were economically disadvantaged, and did not have much to eat and suffered from malnutrition (Otero, 2011). In the painting, the ribs of the two people are notorious because they have bad feeding, they were poor, and they ate less food. In addition, it can be noticed a sample of what the most of indigenous people passed: malnutrition, and poverty. Guayasamín painted the physical aspects of an unjust world filled of poverty and suffering induced by the world economic system (Otero, 2011). Tenderness express how the malnutrition is presenting on
22
TENDERNESS AN ARTISTIC EXPRESSION indigenous society, but even so mother’s love is unwavering this is the expression of feelings of all the ecuadorian mothers. In conclusion, the author painted his mother feelings in his work of art because he had a strong relationship with his mother and he observed the indigenous discrimination that produced poverty in the year 1989 when he painted his work of art named Ternura. For this reason, Oswaldo Guayamín in his painting like allow the indigenous suffering to all over the world in order to stop the discrimination and give them a greater opportunity in their studies or works with the purpose to does not have more poverty in the ingenious families. In this way, author’s painting is a way to protest the indigenous discrimination in order to be grateful with the mothers because their care their children in spite of all problems.

LEGALIZE IT ALL Legalize it All How to Win the War on Drugs Delay the war on drugs could be the first step in order to decrease death by drugs. Currently, the use of drugs kill people around the world because drugs produce overdose and the criminal people kill in order to protect their drugs companies. For this reason, I agree with the article, Legalize it All How to Win the War on Drugs, and I go to speak about the prohibition on drugs that was created how as model of discrimination at the black people and the hippie’s movement when Nixon´s was president of United States; also, we could not delay the sales of drugs by the black market and we need to cause a decrease of deaths by drugs consume. Hippie’s community or shamans consumed drugs; however, when Nixon was president of United States. He promoted discrimination through the drugs laws because had a racist behavior with them. According to Baum (2016), “Associate the hippies with marihuana and blacks with heroin, and then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities” (p.22). Therefore, we need destroy laws that have born as one form of discrimination; on the other hand, at this moment is impossible stop drugs sales because its move a lot money in the world. The black market has moved billions of dollars with the sales of drugs, but we could stop it. According to Baum (2016), “half of American people that is 20 years consume drugs” (p.25). So, the black market is accessible of American people; therefore, legal stores could be better than black market because it could have drugs that not produce problems at the people that consume it; on the other hand, is possible that all the taxes collected could help at the people that is addicted because is possible create new buildings and ambulances to help addicted people. So, with the taxes that could produce the sales of drugs could be possible increase the help of addict people. According to Baum (2016), “in 2015 Colorado collected about 135$ million in marihuana taxes” (p.30). So, is possible buy new ambulances and to buy new devices in order to improve de medical center with the purpose of have least deaths by overdose. Then, if we like help at the people we need to stop of expend money on the war

LEGALIZE IT ALL on drugs and we need investment in medicine and health centers that help at the people that has consume problems. In conclusion, the laws that prohibited the drugs consume initialized how a form of discrimination and now is not necessary continuo investment money in the war on drugs because is impossible win this battle. Currently, the people that sell drugs earn a lot money in the black market because a lot people consume drugs; for this reason, the taxes could be used in order to create new building and ambulance that help at the people that are addict or have an overdose with the purpose to decrease all deaths that produce the drugs.

Learning of English in Ecuador´s Schools and the Need to Improve the Teaching of this Language. Andrés Riofrío Yachay University of Experimental Technology and Research

LEARNING OF ENGLISH IN ECUADOR´S SCHOOLS
Abstract Currently, education system in Ecuador pretended that students could learn English after eight school year with B1 level in the Common European Framework of Reference. To complete this goal the Ministry of Education has teachers with at least level B2; in contrast with the actual educational system, this paper affirmed that teachers need to have at least C1 level, for develop better the English knowledge of their students, Ecuadorian students need to study English from first day of school in order to have students with B2 level when the students finished the high school. Also, with helping of new technologies such as program computers and videos are possible increase the English knowledge of Ecuadorian students in order that they could travel to learn in the best universities with help of scholarships that the government granted. Therefore, the matter to teach English is necessary to change with new technologies such as computer programs and more qualified teachers in order to send students at the best universities with B2 level for change the matrix production (the way to increase the investment in the country) with new knowledge; on the other hand with students that has B2 level the country could increase the number of tourists, and could create new international alliances without the language barrier. Keywords: English, system of education, bilingual country.
32
LEARNING OF ENGLISH IN ECUADOR´S SCHOOLS
Learning of English in Ecuador´s Schools and the Need to Improve the Teaching of this Language. Currently, the English language is very important in Ecuador because now English is known as the lingua Franca. Ecuadorian people study twelve years before go to university. Ecuadorian educational system using the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) and this system trying that Ecuadorian students acquire level A1 when finishing night school year, A2 when finish first year of bachillerato, and B1 when finish third year of bachillerato; however, the results of teaching English in Ecuador is not satisfactory because the students do not know to speak English when the students finished high school in their twelve year (third year of bachillerato). For this reason, the Ministry of Education needs to change the specific English goal that want that Ecuadorian students learn English after eighth school year. Also, teachers could have at least C1 English level in the CEFR and finally the schools need provide more access to new technologies as computers in order to have a bilingual country. In the first place, If the Ecuadorian people like to have a bilingual country they need to demand that children could receive English since first year of school. Currently, the English access before the eighth year of school need to be mandatory in order to have students that could speak English after they finish high school and University. According to Ureña, “Re-design the curriculum so that English instructions begins at 1st grade and an allcontent class in English is taught in 12th grade. This new distribution of the different levels of English language proficiency in the Ecuadorian educational system can guarantee that high school graduates reach true B2 level upon graduation.” (2014). However, in the National Curriculum Guidelines we could find that students could acquire level B1 if they start study English in the eighth level of their studies. The educational system and the form to teach English improved in Ecuador with Rafael Correa’s government; however, the currently educational system is not enough yet. According to Villalba and Rosero (2014) the students could start their English learning when they are in eight and ninth of school year and finish in the third year of bachillerato with B1 English level (p. 7). So, exist
33
LEARNING OF ENGLISH IN ECUADOR´S SCHOOLS a syllabus for the Ecuadorian students; for this reason, English teachers need to achieve the goals of syllabus in order to have students that could this language. However, if the teachers could achieve the goals of syllabus; then, Ecuador would not have a lot private English institutes and the students would not need to take English classes when they like to travel at another country that has English speakers. Currently the students do not have B1 level because when they go to the University they need again to start studding English of zero. According to the British Council “bachelor’s students are required to graduate with at least B1 English. There is uncertainty as to how this is evaluated, and anecdotal evidence suggests that students take insufficient classes to reach this level.” (p. 26) For this reason, the English institutes increase in Ecuador in order to teach English to the students that could not learn in the schools because the people that really knew English learnt from first day of class in a private school or learnt in a private institute. So, is necessary that students could started learning English since first school day in order that students have an opportunity to studied in the best universities of the world. Second place, If the Ecuadorian government pretend that students could learn in the best universities of the world need to has teachers with at least C1 level. Ureña said that the English language requirement for secondary school teachers need be C1 because she knows that with this level the professors could obtain students with B2 (Ureña, 2014). So, if the teachers have a better English level they could have better students that could travel at the best universities of the world as like the Ecuadorian government in order to increase the commercial alliances of the country with the knowledge that students could acquire in international universities, and could create after new commercial alliances due English domain. So, a bilingual country need to have students with at least B2 level and the actual curriculum was designed in order to have students with B1 level. English teachers that have B2 level could understand and write complex texts and their students with B1 level could do same thing with simple texts. In the national curriculum guidelines is possible to find that teachers need B2 level in order to teach English in the secondary schools because the students need to have B1 level (Villalba & Rosero, 2014). Therefore, students could have a respectable English level if their teachers can meet the goals of the English syllabus; so, the government created the guidelines in order that teachers could work correctly with the syllabus with
34
LEARNING OF ENGLISH IN ECUADOR´S SCHOOLS the purpose that students could speak English and they could travel to different countries in order to be in the best universities of the world to help with the scholarship that government grant. The goal of Ministry of Education is that Ecuadorian´s students could finish high school with B1 level in order that they could travel at others countries and they could finish the university. However, Ureña said that is necessary at least B2 for entering a good university and proof the assessment of international universities that is about knowledge in the areas of reading, math and writing (Ureña, 2014). Same thinking has the British Council, “B1 English is not usually sufficient for the SAT or for entry to top universities in English-speaking countries, meaning that scholarships are likely to benefit students that achieve higher than B1 English through additional means, such as private lessons.” (2015). So, is important has better teachers with better English level that could use new technologies as computer in order to improve the actual English knowledge. Third place, the use of new methodologies to teach English through new technologies could help at the professors in the process of teaching. According to Haboud, “Within the context of bilingual intercultural schools, it will be necessary to develop teaching-learning techniques which will be easy to handle and will make the learning process something attractive to students.” Furthermore, we could use the computers and internet creating a new learning environment in order to have best result with the Ecuadorian English students. Then, we could use the computers that Ecuadorian government provides to schools in order that students could develop skills better than modern education. For example, the teachers could teach with videos or programs such as Duolingo or Kahoot in order to incentivize and have an better class; however, the new technologies also could produce distraction. The use of technology contribute at distraction and students could break the concentration that permit understand the English teacher explanation. According to Wilkins, “Rapport between students and teachers is essential to learning. Learners need to make a connection between the knowledge they receive and the person presenting it. The connection is especially important to second-language acquisition. Without a connection, learners can struggle to make sense of what they are trying to learn. However, more and more learners are turning to the internet to develop their language skills. Generally, there is a
35
LEARNING OF ENGLISH IN ECUADOR´S SCHOOLS lot of concern among learners and teachers that technology is affecting our studentrelationships.”
teacher
Therefore, is
important will not break the connection student-teacher that produce better results of learning than new technologies as cell phones, computers or internet. However, the purpose is use the new technologies as tool but without destroy the student-teacher relationships. Knowledge is transmitting better for teacher than computers programs or videos but the teachers could use these tools in order to students could learn by themselves when they have free time. According to Motteram, “technologies are ideally placed to help teachers working with learners, and learners working independently, to do the necessary languaging.” Therefore, the teacher possible could use new technologies as computer in order to develop the skills of the student with teachers that knows the programs and could help his students without cut the connection between teacher and students; so, is important use every tool that could help us in the goal of have a bilingual country in order to win the benefits of talk English as to attract new tourists in order boost our economy. In conclusion, English educational system that we have in Ecuador need be changed. Now, the goal of have English student with B1 level of English is not sufficiently for study in countries of English-speaker, change the matrix production, and Ecuador could increase its capacity to interact with other nationalities in order to have new commercial alliances and tourists. Therefore, English should be mandatory since the first school year, with teachers that should have at least C1 in order that their students could have B2 when finished their high school studies. Also, the teachers could to take advantage of new technologies in order to improve the English of their students with new English programs that could be installed in the students’ computers.
