MY ENGLISH JOURNEY

Camila Salvador Universidad Yachay Tech Imbabura, Ecuador

July 25, 2015

Dear Portfolio Reader:

My name is Camila Salvador and I will soon finish the last English level. I remember when I came to this University, this was a big change on my life, and I started my English classes from the first level. This was because I did not know English very well, but this experience through all levels was very inspiring and rewarding for me. I am really happy for this last level because now I know English. I also know that I need to practice more, but someday I will speak English very well.

I remember when somebody talked to me in English before I could not understand him, for this reason I was very nervous when people say that the classes will be all in English. At that moment I wanted to go back to my home, and return to Yachay when I could talk in English and understand when somebody talked to me. All these preoccupations were wrong, because since the first level my teachers could teach me everything I need to understand them.

Through the five English levels that I was completed, I learned a lot of things, for example the grammar such as all rules of English that you have to know to be a good English writer. Also, I learned how to do good essays with their structure, and with APA format. In my school I did not know what APA format was, but all my teachers taught me how I should use the APA in my essays. Now, I am sure that I am a very good English writer in APA style.

In level six we were practicing a lot of speaking, listening and writing. We were doing essays, presentations, debates, and one research project, but we also did the fun classes with our Friday labs. In my essays I also learned how to organize my ideas, and my English vocabulary is better. Still today I have problems with my speech, but with more practice I will be a good English speaker.

Finally, I think that all time that I spent in my English classes was worth it. I am really grateful to all my teachers for making me a person with values such as responsibility, honesty, and punctuality, but above all, to have taught to me English. I feel that I am ready to continue with my academic life in Yachay. Thank you very much for everything.

Sincerely,

Camila Salvador

Don´t Buy The Hype, College Education Is Not An Investment Camila Salvador Yachay Tech September, 2016

Don’t Buy The Hype, College Education Is Not An Investment

How would you feel if after five years of hard study at university you end up working on something completely different from your career? In fact, that is the case for many people. In the George Leef article Don’t Buy The Hype, College Education Is Not An Investment, the author explains that most college graduates do not have good economic income or are unemployed. Also, some of the young do not practice the degree that they got in college, or they are in jobs that do not require any academic preparation. In general, I agree with Leef’s article, but I believe that nowadays, the great majority of employers require their workers have a college degree.

In the article, the author says that “higher education boosters continue to proclaim that college is undoubtedly “worth it” and “still a good investment” (Leef, 2013). I think that college is not “undoubtedly” good. There are types of people of all kinds. Some people gain success after having gone to college while others get success without going there. The downside of the situation of people who do not go to college is that most cannot get a good job because they do not have a college degree. However, in these times, for people who have their college degree it is also difficult to get a good job.

Leef writes that if a college degree were a regulated investment opportunity, it would have to bear the standard warning that past performance is no guarantee of future performance (Leef, 2013). I totally agree with that. People should know that if they were good students in college, they are not necessarily going to be just as good on the job. That is because a job is completely different than studying. The most important

thing to achieve success in the job is the attitude. Everyone is different and everyone knows their strengths and weaknesses.

Leef used three examples of students. Student A is a good student and after graduating he finds a good job in his area. Student B does not have aptitude for academic pursuits, he goes to college, and finally he does not have a good job. Student C is not going to college, but she has abilities in certain activities that lead to success (Leef, 2013). I think that this are only three cases of people. As I said earlier, people are different and therefore have different skills and abilities. It depends on everyone knowing how to take advantage their capabilities. Sometimes college can help you develop your skills.

In conclusion, I think that Leef’s article is good, but he should know that nowadays a college degree is necessary to get a good job. Each person has different abilities, and sometimes college helps us develop them. If you put your mind to it, you can gain success on your own merits without a college degree. It all depends on your attitude and being productive. You decide which way to take, but you always have to progress personally. College can be a good investment if you know how to take it.

Interpretation Essay Camila Salvador Robert Angulo Domenica Monteverde Yachay Tech November 10, 2016

Interpretation Essay

"The purpose of art is to give body to the secret essence of things" (Aristotle). Each type of art expresses different meanings or feelings, be it music, painting, architecture, etc. This time we will focus on what expresses the art of painting. Painting is the art of graphic representation using pigments mixed with other organic or synthetic substances. The origin of this art is in prehistory with the paintings. Over time paintings have been classified according to the trends, fashions or styles of the times. However, all paintings have a great significance. It is not necessary to be a great critic to describe the art we see, which is why we will describe our reflection on the following paintings: "Pariendo UtopĂas" and "Women with head of flowers finding on the beach the remains of a piano."

In this picture we can see the technique and school of the author "The Magic Realism. This movement or school that was created in Latin America consists of a description of absolutely wonderful things, from fantastic animals to hidden cities, passing through sources of eternal youth and trees whose fruits were able to provide everything men needed for their livelihood.

The work that we are presenting has the name of "Pariendo utopias" by the painter Alejandro Costas. The theme is magical thinking because a new world can’t come out of a landscape of the Earth. The painting is made with oil on canvas, made in the 21st century under the contemporary style.

Utopia is closely related to the desire to give meaning to life and happiness, the need and the search for a better world, more solidarity and more just. There is a close relationship between justice and utopias. On the one hand, the need to imagine better worlds is exclusive to the human species and, on the other hand, this necessity inevitably arises. The fact of being free, of being able to dream of places better than that which surrounds us and of being able to act in the direction of these desires is intimately connected with our utopian nature.

The author basically treats to describe a utopia a change of the world and society to a perfect harmony. When we see this picture we think that our world is somber, but we can change that with a light towards a new world. The new world coming out of the shell means the change that the artist wants to be made to the planet towards a more utopian society where peace and equality reign. The light represents the hope of Alejandro and the people to get a world with more happiness and zero violence.

Trees accompanied by colorful mountains and houses signify the harmony and rebirth of society with nature, because not only must we seek peace as humanity we need to think like living beings surrounded by a great gift to live. This painting

transmits big feelings of hope that Alejandro have on their dream of change the world and link all of the humans.

This work is intimately related to the fashion of the 1930's, which was very light, because by the world crisis that was lived, had to leave aside some ostentatious garments to adapt to the economy of the moment, but despite this crisis it was also a very glamorous era. During the second half of that decade, DalĂ was in charge of designing models of headdresses (hat-chop, hat-ink, and hat-shoe) suits and other clothing in the women's wardrobe, in collaboration with high fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli.

Some of these models were published in fashion magazines such as "Harper's Bazaar." At that time, the image of the female figure was crowned by a head entirely made up of flowers, as can be seen in this composition.

The origin of this idea was disclosed in the International Surrealist Exhibition of 1936, held from June 11 to July 4 at the New Galleries Burlington. Nowadays, the

photos of the inauguration of the exhibition of his work are remembered with true interest, where Salvador Dalí had been in charge of hiring a model that he dressed in a unique way. The model was decorated entirely her head with flowers and also made her stroll through the gardens near the exhibition.

Some other works of this same series are necrophilous Spring or Surrealistic Flowers. The flower par excellence of Dalí was the narcissus that occupied a prominent place in a decisive moment of its life and its artistic race. One of the keys to the composition, as in the work Metamorphosis of Daffodil, are the last verses of the poem that Dalí dedicates to this last painting: "When the head cleaves, when this head cracks, when this head explodes, it will appear The new flower, the new Daffodil: Gala, my daffodil. "

In these works we can see how Dalí replaces human heads with different objects. This was because he disliked the lack of intelligence, frivolity and exaggerated perfumes of the rich who frequented the surrealist group. This work is in Kunsthaus, Zurich.

In conclusion, the first painting presented called "Pariendo Utopías" is magical realism consisting of the description of absolutely wonderful things. While in the second painting called "Women with head of flowers finding on the beach the remains of a piano" we can see a realism by the world crisis that was lived in that time, mixed with a little narcissism of the author. Finally, we believe that art has great meanings that we must revise with great caution to find them. We can all describe art as we feel it.

Government Censorship Camila Salvador Yachay Tech November 24, 2016

Government Censorship

We live in one century where all people are free, but is it really what happens? Well, this is not really true, because today we have a lot of situations where we cannot express our opinion, because government censors some activities or some kinds of freedom of expression. In this essay I want to talk about the reasons that the government censors, I will talk about the case of censorship in China that is an example of government censorship, and finally I will give my opinion about censorship.

There are many reasons for the government to practice censorship. The first reason is political. The government should be stable to maintain the country well. All countries have people who are opposing the government, and these people always want to destabilize the power. The way that use the government is censor the activities that should put in war to society. There are also other reasons for governments to censor. There are religious reasons. This has not happened in all the world, but in some countries this is real. One example is in Arabia where women should have “adequate clothes. These clothes should not show the face or hands or feet of women but this is a religious tradition, and the government penalizes women who do not do this.

The government of China censors all the internet in China. They have a lot of people who work daily found information to censor. In China the government censors social media like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to prevent people and organizations that want to destabilize the Communism that China has. All internet users in China might accept the terms and conditions that government give. Other reasons that the Chinesse government has for censorship is the children. The government does not allow

children to see programs that could damage their minds. For this reason I think that Chinesse people are very smart and innovative.

I agree with some cases of censorship for the government, but I also too disagree with other reasons that are the worst for me. I think that people should learn one good way to express themselves, because there are many people who disagree with some topic, and they go to express their opinion in the worst way. One example of this is people who are opposed to gays or lesbians, and they forget that these people are also humans, and I think that no one have the right to discriminate others. In this case the government should censor this speech. On the other hand I disagree with censorship the case of Arabian women, because women have the same right to express themselves, however they want.

In conclusion, the government has good and bad reasons to censor. The Chinesse government is very extreme with censorship, but maybe for this reason Chinesse people are very smart and innovative. People do not know how to express without hurting the feelings of others. Finally, I think that there are many ways to express our freedom, but it always should be with respect.

Literary Analysis Camila Salvador Yachay Tech October 18, 2016

Literary Analysis

All stories have a message that leaves us a reflection. I will write about two stories. These stories are “Stone Soup” and “Araby”. I choose these stories because I liked how the authors explained the details, and how two stories that are completely different can be related. I will start with a summary of these two stories. After that, I will compare the mood and the theme that the two stories have, and finally I will choose which story is more meaningful to me.

“Stone Soup” is a story that happened during the war. A tired soldier went to a little poor town. In this place he tried to find some food because he had not eaten in some days. The soldier went to all the houses that were in this town, but no one wanted to help him. After this, he could see some youngsters and he said to theirs that he would prepare the best stone soup, the youngsters gave the soldier water and some stones. The soldier started to prepare the soup, and little by little people gave to soldier tomatoes, salt, and other ingredients. Finally, all the people of the town ate this soup, and they felt bad because they could see that all town could eat with help of all.

“Araby” is a story about a boy who lived with a poor family. He played all day outside his house with his neighbors. One of his friends had a sister. The boy fell in love with this girl, but he never tried to talk with her. One day she started to talk with him. She asked him if he would go to “Araby” that is an annual festival. He said yes, and she asked him if he could buy a present in this festival for her. The boy said yes. In the day of festival the boy´s uncle forgot to give the boy the money and finally the boy could not buy anything for this girl.

The moods in both stories are a little different. In the “Stone Soup” story, the author related the events without many details. In fact, in the “Araby” story the author related the events with many details, and this permitted a lector to imagine all in his mind. The lector can create images and situations in his mind. In “Stone Soup” the soldier talked with youngsters in a sarcastic mode. While in “Araby” the boy always talked with truth, and with his heart. The first story had a good outcome because all the people received a good lesson about values, but in the second story the final ending is really sad because the boy cannot do something for his love.

The themes in both stories are similar. In “Stone Soup” the story happened in a poor town that a soldier found after war. In “Araby” the story happened in a poor neighborhood. In this story the author described this place and its dark side. Both principal scenes in both stories take place outside the houses.

In conclusion, for me, the more meaningful story is “Stone Soup”, because it gave me a really good message. This message is that people who work together are stronger, and in this way the money is less important. More important are the values and the teamwork.

Important Events in the History of Planet Earth Camila Salvador Yachay Tech December, 2016

Important Events in the History of Planet Earth

Introduction The formation of the Earth is a topic of controversy among scientists and religious believers. In my research I want to focus on the scientific side. It is necessary to know the physical evidence found during long years of painstaking research. Personally, I think it is very interesting to know the history of how the world on which we live was formed. At this time what I know about this topic is very little, which is why I want to investigate from the beginning to the end in every detail. I am sure it will be a beautiful journey from the past to the present that I will love, and I hope all readers will also enjoy it. We should all know how the planet where we lived was formed, and how it has evolved over time. The Earth is approximately 4500 million years old. This was verified by relative dating that is events are placed in an appropriate order using principles such as the law of superposition. This law say that states that the youngest rock layer is situated on the edge and the oldest at the bottom of the stratigraphic column (Tarbuck & Lutgens, 2010). It is necessary to know the data mentioned in the background since it is general culture and at least the readers should know. I will talk about the Earth formation, and its internal structure. Objectives The main objective of this research is to provide a thorough knowledge of the history of the geology of the Earth. With this project I want to clear up many questions on the topic. I hope that at the end of the investigation all responses obtained provide great satisfaction for me and for the readers. I think my work will contribute enough that readers can obtain a clear idea of the history of the place where we live. This

research may lead to positive and negative consequences. A positive consequence may be that readers finish happy to learn more about the science of our world.

Research Plan The research project that I will make is about the formation of planet Earth in a geological form and will have two chapters. In the first chapter I will discuss how the Earth formed until the cessation of meteorites crashing into it. The second chapter will be about the internal structure of the Earth. To investigate all the above issues I will use some resources such as books, the internet, research published by renowned scientists, and I will request the help of some PhD professors in geology here at Yachay Tech University. The time that I have to perform the research is around two and a half months. It was established that the project should be presented in six stages over that time.

Research Questions The research questions to be examined are: 1. How was the Earth formed and when did the planet stop its formation? 2. What is the internal structure of the Earth and what types of rock does it contain?

Thesis Statement The formation of the Earth had a series of events. The continents on our planet have not always been arranged the same way. Throughout all the time of the formation of the Earth there have been many forms of life. The objective of this research is to

know the history of where we live. I will do research supported by prominent researchers.

Chapter 1 Earth Formation To know how the earth was formed first we must know the origin of our galaxy called the Milky Way. We must also know that the Earth is a giant multidimensional system, that is to say that if we produce some change in one part it will also change another part of the Earth (Tarbuck & Lutgens, 2010). In 1788 James Hutton, who was a great physician, published his Theory of the Earth. From that publication was born the modern geology with the principle of uniformitarianism. It states that today's physical, chemical, and biological laws are the same as in the past. In an article published by Hutton he affirmed that they did not find vestiges of a beginning nor perspectives of an end. The origin of the Earth is located in the Precambrian era where the first unicellular and multicellular organisms appeared. This event covers about 3.96 billion years. As we can observe with these numbers, we realize that the formation of the Earth was a really long process (Tarbuck & Lutgens, 2010). The Earth is only a small part of a large system known as the Solar System, which, in turn, is part of an even larger subsystem called the Milky Way. The Big Bang theory is one of the scientific hypotheses that try to explain the origin of the universe and therefore of our Solar System including our planet Earth. This theory says that about 15 billion years ago a giant explosion threw out all the matter of the universe at incredible speeds. After that, with the remnants of the explosion that consisted almost

entirely of hydrogen and helium, the first stars and galaxies formed. In one of these galaxies, the Milky Way, was where our Solar System and planet Earth took shape. In order to explain the formation of our Solar System the hypothesis of the primitive nebula is applied. This hypothesis suggests that it all began when a cloud of dust and gases called the nebula began to collapse gravitationally. The gravitational energy was transformed into thermal energy which caused the nebula to heat up. After the formation of the Sun, the nebula cooled and caused the condensation of rocky and metallic material into small solid particles. These particles collided with each other repeatedly (accretion) until they joined together to form bodies the size of an asteroid. Finally in a few million years these bodies formed the planets (Tarbuck & Lutgens, 2010). Later, the high-speed impact of the nebula's remains and the disintegration of the radioactive elements caused a steady increase in the temperature of our planet. Due to this increase in temperature, iron and nickel began to melt producing heavy metal droplets that penetrated towards the center of the planet forming the Earth's core. There was also molten rock that rose to the surface and solidified forming the primitive crust (Tarbuck & Lutgens, 2010). Due to all the mentioned events, the Earth is formed by different materials of which its internal structure is composed. This we will see in the following chapter.

Chapter 2 Internal structure of the Earth The layers of the Earth are distinguished by their composition and are: inner nucleus, outer nucleus, lower mantle, asthenosphere, upper mantle and cortex. Earth was hit by large meteorites that altered the crust. The period of chemical segregation,

mentioned in the previous chapter, by which our planet passed, established the three basic divisions of the interior of the Earth: the iron-rich nucleus; the cloak (thick layer); and the primitive crust (thin layer). In fact, because of this chemical differentiation the interior of the Earth released large quantities of gaseous compounds that formed the atmosphere which allowed life to appear. After certain events the primitive bark eroded, but after that process appeared the continental crust (Walker, 2011). Below I will describe the layers of the Earth defined by its composition: Crust: It is the outer rock layer, divided into oceanic and continental crust. The oceanic crust is about 7 kilometers thick and is composed of basalt rocks that are dark igneous rocks. The continental crust has an average thickness of between 35 and 40 kilometers and consists of many types of rocks (Bogetti, 2010). han 82% content in the mantle. This is a solid rock structure that extends to a depth of 2900 kilometers (Bogetti, 2010).

of oxygen, silicon and sulfur (Bogetti, 2010). The Earth can be divided into five main layers depending on their physical properties:

layer of the Earth and comprises the crust and the upper mantle. This level tends to act as a unit that exhibits rigid behavior because it is cold and resistant. The asthenosphere or weak sphere has favorable temperature and pressure conditions for a portion of molten rock to allow the lithosphere to be able to move (Bogetti, 2010).

racts the effects of the higher temperature, and the resistance of the rocks grows gradually with depth. In the mesosphere the rocks are still very hot and are able to flow in a very gradual way (Bogetti, 2010). ď€ Internal and external core: The outer core is a liquid layer 2270 kilometers thick. The currents of the metallic iron in this zone are those that generate the magnetic field of the Earth. The inner core is a sphere with a radius of 1216 kilometers, and the inner core material behaves as a solid (Bogetti, 2010).

Opposing Viewpoints / Refutation I defend the theory of evolution, which says that our evolution is biological. This theory explains that living beings do not appear out of nowhere, but have an origin and are slowly changing. Most of the theory of evolution is explained by natural selection. The natural selection process required changes in living organisms, which are necessary to improve their lifestyle. The author of this theory is Charles Darwin, a renowned biologist and researcher. The theory of evolution appears as a result of pure observation. That is why this is the most successful theory about the origin of life (Walker, 2011). Another theory about the origin of life is the theory of creationism. Creationism is the religious belief that the universe and life originated by divine creation. This theory is endorsed by polytheists and monotheists, so every religion holds that the world was created by their god or gods. This theory is based on a well-known book which is "The Bible". For my part I cannot find strong evidence that this theory is correct. That is why my research project is based on the scientific aspect of the origin of the universe. It

should be noted that the two theories mentioned are just that, theories. That's because neither has been fully proven.

Conclusions Our planet Earth is 4.5 billion years old. The Earth together with the rest of the planets of our Solar System were formed from the Solar Nebula that are remnants of the formation of the sun. The layers of the Earth are distinguished by their composition and are: inner nucleus, outer nucleus, lower mantle, asthenosphere, upper mantle and cortex. The volume of the internal structure of the Earth is mainly occupied by rock material, which means that the planet has almost always had a solid crust.
