Dear Portfolio Reader:
Throughout our lives, we learn so many things that we wonder which one of them will be useful, but after all everything we learn help us to know a little more about the world. Since I was a child my life was surrounded by the English language, either because of my family, my teachers or my favorite songs. This language has been present whether I have chosen it or not, but to see how things have evolved, I appreciate that I have learned it. From a very young age my family enrolled me in English courses, because for them studying this language would mean a lot in my future life, and they were right!
As I grew up English became a fundamental part of my life, and when I traveled abroad it became my primary language. When I was in my final years of school I participated in several English intercollegiate competitions, I was always good at talking but my problem was writing. When I was admitted in Yachay University I started at level 4 where I started to write like never. I am currently attending the last level of English and it is Level 6 and I must say that I have learned a lot, more than I expected.
When you know something, it becomes very difficult if someone want to teach it again with different techniques and that is what happened to me, but I must say that I have progressed a lot. Writing has helped me grow and of course, improve on my writing but I still have a lot to learn and somehow it is difficult to know that my English schedule will be reduced, but I know I will learn
5
more with the passage of time. In this last level I, can say that I have improved a lot: writing papers, composing essays and interpreting different themes or art have helped me to express myself better.
I feel prepared for what will happen in the future, I now it will be more difficult and I will have more obstacles than I have now but with all the things that I have learned and with the great teachers that I have had the pleasure to know I can face what is coming. I know that what you will see in my portfolio will not be the greatest works nor the best that you will be able to read but I must say that they are the fruit of my progress. Also, I know that I can polish them a little more while I grow up academically but nowadays they make me feel proud. Few people can recognize how low they were until they reached the top, so these jobs are my foundation for professional growth.
I am so grateful with you, dear reader, for taking the time to walk with me through these small steps of my academic life, and to be able to read in depth some of my experiences, my criteria and my inquiries. We all grow over time but the small steps we take are those that will keep us on the ground and set the foundations of knowledge.
Gratefully,
Victoria Suรกrez

Benefits and Issues with Formal and Self-Education.
Imagine that you go to a library and you take some books then you read them and in a few instants, you get your college degree, this is what some people think that self-education is but it is not as simple as it seems. Usually people think that self-education is worthless because they do not put enough effort on certain topics; they just go through the easy way and do not make it with responsibility. (Young, 2010). Self-education is more difficult than formal education because there are aspects such as discipline, concentration, time or the correct resources that are not easy to follow when you do not have pressure that forces you to do it. First, discipline, it is hard to focus yourself to do something without distraction and even finish an activity. Self-education is as important as formal education, because even when you learn from certain topics, you must practice by yourself, for example in mathematics or statistics. (Young, 2010). I truly believe in the common phrase that said: “practice makes perfect” because in the moment you practice you learn more and you can solve exercises by yourself and do not depend on others. In second place is concentration and correct resources, for example there is a “T” model for learning that is divided in three parts: the broad, the narrow and the bottom. In the broad, there should be a range of things or topics that you have a basic understand of, in the narrow are the things or topics that you are an expert in or you have skills in, and in the bottom, should be the way you are going to develop to have deeper knowledge (Young, 2010). This model will help you to emphasized your priorities while you are studying. Also with formal education you have a pressure to study, for example when you are taking calculus 1 and the next semester you are taking physics you must take calculus 2 to understand physics. This forces you to get as much subjects as you can and that helps you to get more
9
knowledge. With formal education, there are things like quizzes, exams, assistance and grades that force you to go to classes and with self-education you must look for time. Third, time and practice, I truly believe that self-education is important and maybe could be one of the best ways of education. When you want to be self-educated you must know that time and discipline are one of the most important aspects, without mentioning practice. It does not work if you just read and leave it here, you should practice, learn deeper and not stop there. Finally, is acknowledgment because in my opinion self-education could be enough to get a major but it is not the best option. For example, with formal education you have a paper that certifies that you where studding something somewhere, and it gives you a credit for being there. With self-education, there is not a certified aside from your knowledge. In conclusion, formal education is seeming to be fundamental to get more opportunities and to back up your knowledge, you must be curious and suspicious. Formal education is necessary if you are trying to be hired in the most successful companies, because when you came from a known college, the opportunities came faster and easy than studying by yourself. Formal education just simplifies the way of how and where you get a job because of your degree, even when you do not get an excellent score, a professional certifies your knowledge, and that is a big deal.

Feelings Around Araby
If you were a young man trying to impress a beautiful girl, would you do everything to get her attention? This is how the kid from “Araby, a story by James Joyce, felt. There are three main things that Araby symbolizes to him which are: the coming of age that he was experimenting, the promises to the beautiful girl the right opportunity to impress her.
First, the coming of age, he was a kid that did not care about playing with his friends otherwise he enjoys talking to his love one (Joyce, 1914). It seems that the fillings he had, were a huge punch in his face, because he was growing up and did not notice it. Also, going alone to somewhere far meant a lot for him, because he was being able to do big things by himself.
Second is the promises to his love one; Araby was a fair in which the beautiful girl wanted to go but cannot, so he promised to buy something for her (Joyce, 1914). He was so excited to go because of her, he must have arrived on time to Araby and find something beautiful as her.
As Joyce (1914) mentioned, when the kid arrived to Araby it was closing, so he got nothing. He just walked away full of anger and anguish, this is way Araby is an important element of the story, because the boy realize that all his tires were useless and there was nothing to do about it.
12
Finally, is the opportunity that he had to impress the girl, Araby was the main topic of the conversation that they had, where he offered to buy something. All the emotion and love was center in Araby, because if he could go there and bring something he would be her hero.
In conclusion Araby us an important element in the story because all the feeling referred to it, for example the freaked of going there the impatience of arriving but most important the love of bringing something. In my opinion the main important things that Araby reflected are the coming of age, the promises to the girl and the opportunity to impress her. Araby involve the main feeling and conflicts that the kid experiments himself.

How is Culture Related with Ethics and Morality?
Through the years, ethics and morality have been related with culture and language, but is there a certain reason for doing this? I truly believe that culture has a greater effect on ethics and morality ad my strongest reasons are: culture help us to have an open mind and respect others.
First, since there are many cultures around the world people are interested on learning about them. For me having an open mind is very important for being and ethical and moral person and the best way of having an opened mind is knowing about different cultures. It is important because in your life you are going to work with different people and you must treat them as good as toy want to be treated.
Also with culture we learn how to respect others because as I mentioned before we are owing to meet a lot of different people and it is ethical and moral to respect how they are. With culture, we involved religion and many other counter topics and we must learn to respect them even when there do not believe in what they are believing. Culture help us to be better with ourselves and with others.
Per Sedivy (2016), morality changes in a foreign language and it is related with ethics because out moral compass is a combination of the egoist forces that have shaped us. This means that does not matter what or how many languages we know we always interact deeply with the ones that are
15
almost from the same place with us. Even when there are some studies that I do not support because for me being kind and respectful does nor interfere with the language toy speak. For example, if you see a poor child asking for help you just go near him and try to make he feel better or look for his parents, avoiding asking where is he from or what language does his parents speak.
In conclusion, your language does not internet with how good person you are, but your culture does. When you learn abut different cultures toy turn into a person with different points of views and opened mind, also with culture you learn to respect others and how to have a good relationship with people.

Is Animal Cloning as Good as It Seems?

Abstract
An efficient animal cloning technology would provide many new opportunities for livestock agriculture, human medicine, and animal conservation. Animal cloning is becoming a useful technique for producing transgenic farm animals and is likely to be used to produce clones from valuable adults. Other applications will also undoubtedly be discovered soon, such as for preserving endangered breeds and species. This project research is destined to learn about animal cloning and the benefits and issues with it. It is important to mention that there are many reasons to approve animal cloning in every country, but it will require some time. In my opinion the most important benefits of animal cloning, like the development of science with animal cloning, the products that cloned animals produce and the benefits of animal cloning.
2
Is Animal Cloning as Good as It Seems? Nowadays there are thousands of animal species that are in danger of extinction, some of them are more critical than others, but if there is not an intervention, there will disappear. According to Pond (2004), cloning is making a biological copy of another organism with the identical genetic makeup of an individual. Animal cloning has the same meaning but it refers to the creation of a new genetic replica of an original living or dead animal. It is important to highlight that animal cloning can mean a light of hope for animals that would otherwise disappear, and must consider that animal cloning could help scientists to understand many facts about the development of breeding or the advanced technology for cloning that we can use these days. There are three important things to analyze about animal cloning: the development of science with animal cloning, the products that cloned animals produce and the benefits of animal cloning. One of the most important things about animal cloning is the development of science that is required for a new species, we must consider that according to Fiester (2005), and the progress in animal cloning science has been exponential. Since 1995, when scientists at the Roslin Institute cloned two lambs, Megan and Morag, scientists have not only cloned other species, but they have advanced the science of cloning to now include genetic modifications that serve pharmaceutical purposes. Science is advancing every day so is the necessity to produce and develop new products based on animals. Cloning offered new options to people who depend on it, using science to improve the capacity and the quantity of producing new products.
3
Technology had advanced a lot from what it started, we must consider that animals may be hurt because of this process but scientists’ idea is to improve some deficiencies that some animals have. Pacelle’s research (2005) clearly specifies that animal cloning is unethical and anti-moral scientific progress, he is based on the idea that cloning is not being used in a useful manner. He cites the example of a family that lost their pet and were willing to pay the amount of money needed to have it back. People try to use animal cloning as a personal benefit and avoid the fact that it is a scientific process. They just care about themselves and forget the main reasons of why animal cloning was development. In Britt’s research (2005, there is established that canines are difficult to clone because their eggs released from the ovary earlier than in other mammals. It took 123 tries to create two puppies, the other ones died by pneumonia. Dog duplication and other cloning advances might eventually lead people to be less averse to the idea of human cloning. There will always be people who disagree or will avoid some advances but we must think on how many progresses we are making. With all the research that had been made animal cloning is a way of producing new products and try to avoid some animal extinction. Animal cloning must be a way to study science and produce a new way of improve the way of living. Science have priorities and satisfying a capricious family is not part of it. Another reason of why animal cloning is important is the products that cloned animals produce, how good or bad are they and the development that is required to produce them. The Biotechnology Industry Organization (2010) mentioned that consumers can benefit from cloning because meat and milk would be more healthy, consistent, and safe. Most of the foods from cloning will be from the offspring of clones that are not clones themselves, but sexually reproduced animals. Some research shown that food from cloned animals use the same ingredients that normal milk and will have the same reaction on people. This is why there is no safety reason to identify food
4 differently. Walsh (2003) announced that labels and warnings on food are typically used to identify ingredients that may cause illness to some people. When scientists produce a new cloned anima. They can change the wrong DNA that it has, and make it a better species that can survive for more time than was expected and contribute more with its owner. In the last eight years, scientists have not only cloned different species, but they have advanced the science of cloning to now include genetic modifications that serve pharmaceutical or agricultural purpose. These details will help farmers with the development of new products. This research specifies that with animal cloning scientist can modify the wrong facts that normal animal have, and with it many of the products will be healthier and saver (Fisher, 2005). Imagine modify something that is wrong and can hurt you and the ones you love and now imagine that you can correct this terrible fact. Finally, there are some benefits of cloning animals starting on the useful organs that doctors extract from a cloned pig. This fact will reduce the large waiting list that many people suffered, without mentioning that with more organs transplants will be faster. Per the National Human Genome Research Institute, another application for cloned animals is to build populations of endangered, or possibly even extinct, species of animals. In 2001, researchers produced the first clone of an endangered species: a type of Asian ox known as a guar. It is important to mention that animal cloning can prevent animal extinction because they will create new species for the ones that are losing, we will enjoy the species of animal that we love without the fear of losing them one day. There are some species that lose their reproductive ability and with cloning it won’t be a problem anymore. According to Newton (2015), cloning can be used in animal husbandry to create breeding animals that express a set of desired hereditary traits in agriculture, including higher milk and meat production. With cloned animals, there are many possibilities and facts that will help to the development of science and medicine. There are many issues or problems with cloning but with time that will not matter. Medicine is advancing every day, and science must do
5 it too. Even when there are many people that do not understand the real intention of cloning or the best uses that it has, we cannot judge good research just for a few people. There will be many people without counting farmers that will be benefit of cloning. Scientist hope that they could have a better life after the animal cloning process, they will be using their organs to improve their life, or make it longer. We must focus on all the people and animals that will be benefit with this type of research, and help scientists with the development of more techniques and projects that will make this research one of the most important ones in the history of genetics.
To conclude it is important to highlight that cloning is a progress of science and every day there are many new issues that are waiting to be solved. With animal cloning we have more benefits than cons and that is a big advanced. People should realize that this type of evolution in science is to help us to be better not to use it as a whim. Even when there a strong connection with a pet or something cloning do not meant to be like that. There are many possibilities of losing some animals while producing a new cloned, but the risk is worth it because we will be losing one animal but producing ten more without problems. We must focus on all the good things that animal cloning can provide us even when there are some issues. We lose or damage something but we learn about it and improve what we had done. Animal cloning has a lot of benefits but the most important ones are the development of science with animal cloning, the products that cloned animals produce and the ways that it helps medicine.
