Dear Portfolio Reader,
My name is Tamia Yanez. I am grateful to you for reading my portfolio. My portfolio is a compilation of my best written works and it has 4 essays, response essay, interpretation essay, augmentative and final research essay, that were written throughout the semester, level 6. My experiences at Yachay, as English learner were difficult because when I entered university I did have a bit of background in English and it was as a new language for me. But step by step I am getting better now still I have many problems in English but I want to continue learning more about this language because it is important for my professional life. Also, I need to improve my skills to continue with my college career at Yachay. As student, I could improve my skills in writing, reading and listening. Before entering level 6, I did have some problems in writing because I did had some knowledge about grammar tense, vocabulary. And my principal problem is do public presentation because I always get nervous and I forget the presentation. I know that I must improve my speaking and I want to improve it. Also, I improved because I began to investigate about each topic or grammar tense and I did my best. But I know that I have new knowledge as vocabulary, grammar tense to continue my career and to improve my professional life.
My principal achievements in this semester were valuable because I learned to do a well thesis for example when I started level 6 I write thesis like this: I agree with Leef’s article for many reasons: “the cost of college is expensive and some young people do not have money to pay and some people have success without a college degree because many people prefer do not spend money and time in a college and they look for developing their skills and to start an own business.” This thesis had a bunch of ideas that did not make sense and it is not clear and more specific, but now I can write a more specific and clear thesis for example: “Child maltreatment can produce negative consequences in the future of children that can last all lifetime and consequently it can bring bad behaviors and problems in children.” I think that it was a good achievement because I could improve my skills in the writing of essays. Another achievement in this semester was learning to integrate source in an essay. When I started level 6, I could not implement a source of correct way for example: In response essay I put: “Leef’s (2013) says that…” and I do not put the page or number paragraph, but my process was well because this is the way to integrate a source: According to World Health Organization (WHO) (2016) “child maltreatment causes suffering to children and families and can have long term consequences. (para. 9)”. It is a good progress. Another progress is the structure of the body of an essay and grammar, because I learned to do sentences that grammatical meaning have. I am very grateful that you have taken the time to read my portfolio. It was done with all affection and care. In this part I want to say that the learning of new knowledge does not end yet because we should improve our skills and to fight for complying our goals and purpose that as professional as have for the future. This semester I have learned to use my skills for learning more about English. Sincerely
Tamia Yanez
Don´t Buy The Hype, College Education Is Not An Investment. Tamia Yanez Yachay Tech University
Don´t Buy The Hype, College Education Is Not An Investment.
Don´t Buy the Hype, College Education Is Not an Investment by George Leef was an article that have the principals stereotypes about education for example Leef (2013) says: “going to college is not investment at all”. This article was interesting and confused to me, because Leef (2013) talks about education and college degree. People that have a college degree have not always success in the life because some people end university with debts and they have obligation to find any job for paying their loan, but it is not possible to find a job according to college degree obtained. However, some people end up working in job for which they do not need an academic preparation and they have more success. According to Leef ( 2013) “the education can be questionable factor for developing society because the system cannot be correct because there are many people that have a college degree and they have more preparation to start working.” There are people that do not have a college degree but they have more achievements; it occurs because some people have more intelligent and they do not waste your time on education, this is a reason for that many people believe that education it is not a good investment. Moreover, the government interferes in changing of the education system to improve it or worsen it and there are not guaranteed that the education is a good investment. However, many people believe that College cannot be a good option to continue their life because it is a great inversion that it needs many time and money. Leef (2013) says that “College itself isn’t an investment, just one way of increasing your value (N.p)” I think that it is true because a college degree can give us more opportunity in life but I think that the abilities are more important in all people than credential that many people obtain. I agree with Leef ´s article for many reasons: the cost of college is expensive and some young people do not have money to pay the cost of the college; and some people have success without a college degree because many people prefer do not spent money and time in a college and they look for developing their skills and to start an own business. First of all, many young people do not have money for paying of college because the cost of college is very expensive. Also, an investment on college is often wasted because
students can be skilled or cannot be skilled to the field to study applied and some students do not have the same abilities than others and it produces that they do not have more option to follow studying in fields of studying that are not of your interest and they end up working like frustrated professionals. Many students enter in private colleges and they have that paying an excessive cost to each month. Also, students do not have enough money and they make a decision to acquire a college loan to pay their university. According to Anderberg (2014) “Recent reports show that 10% (and the number is increasing) of student loans are in default. On government loans, this means they haven’t been paid in 9 months. Furthermore, only 4 in 10 student loan borrowers are paying back their loans at any given time (para. 20). This quote means that many students finish the college with many debts and they must find a job but in those jobs people cannot obtain enough money to pay the debts, it is a principal problem. Many students think that the can find a good job according to their capabilities but the reality is different and their debts should be paid as soon as possible. However, many people do not get debts and they prefer start to produce their own money with business and I think that it is a best way to have success in the life, but money only give us power and it does not make us good people. Secondly, a college degree is just a paper and it gives us superficial value but it cannot determine the capabilities that we have. Also, college is not a factor that influences in advance and progress of a society and countries, because college only strengthens cultures, values and spirit. Young people themselves can improve their capabilities without attending a college and they have not need to spend time and some students prefer to develop their skills, they start to improve themselves without relying of the quality of study that have because the capabilities are more important in people than a college degree. Also, some students that prefer do not attend to college, they create their own opportunity to improve the quality life and they can develop own capabilities for improving the economy within society, country and world. Also, I believe that they are
who progress in this life because they are not depending another people because they decide to work on something that they like. Thirdly, I disagree with the author with a college is not a good investment because the education can give more knowledge to be more productivity and a college degree can generate new opportunities to find a job. Also, A person that have a college degree can have more opportunities to receive a good salary and today in all world exist financial support for people with low economic sources and they can enjoy a good education in the best university. Besides, I think that it is a good opportunity to improve the quality life. Also, countries are implementing new education system and this new system look for help to young people to develop skills and capabilities. In addition, many jobs need a college degree to contract people and it is necessary have a degree. College degree give us opportunities to learn new languages and to travel other countries and to know new people and the most important is that education can motivate to look for solutions to problems of a country. In conclusion, education is important to develop skills and capabilities. Also, a college degree can be a just paper that can be obtain with effort or without effort for this a college not is at all to determine the capacities and abilities that people have. Moreover, the most important is the productivity of a person and a credentials have not validity, if a person have not abilities. I agree with any points and disagree with another points because it is true that a college degree may mean nothing but some employers need a degree to hire people. However, It is true that college is very expensive and it spend time and money and young people have to get a great debts but in some countries there are financial support for students I think that we would take responsibility for developing our economy.

Araby Literary analysis Tamia Yanez Yachay Tech University October 10, 2016
In Joyce (1914) short story “Araby the narrator tells the story of his own child hood. He lived on a quiet street called North Richmond Street, and in this street the protagonist and his friends played in their free time (para.1). The author relates his own sad story and the way in which his life was changed. The author knows a girl and he began to feels rare sensations and this feelings confused him. He was in loved. In this story Joyce treat to demonstrate the things that he can do by a girl but he was a child and his child hood had a transition to adolescent and it represent a drastic changing in his life. He uses literary elements as symbolism, anecdote, and plot for describing his story. First of all, the author describes his adolescence like anguished because his life changed very fast. He was begging to live his child hood and he knows a girl, she was his first love but these love was not true. Joyce like a child is always playing with friend and he enjoyed of Innocence of his childhood and he was a happy boy. Playing les sense when he knows to his friend's sister and he spend hours observing her. He have never a similar experience in the past and he was as an explorer in unknown lands and his attitude was stranger because Joyce have feelings that it confused him. Also, he wanted to do anything to her but in these moments he did not think things rights because loving can produce that a boy change his thought. The author use plot to show a sequence of events that occurring in his life. Second of all, the principal symbolism of his story is love. He began to feel new sense inside him but he did not have experience in these things because was a child that he become in adolescent. His love was an obsession that developing while he observed her and it was called love. His mind was always in his love. Another symbol is a bazaar because in these place he may recognized that all thing that it made no sense because he
was doing absurd things. And he recognize he was as a tool of her because Joyce (1914) says “It was drive by vanity of girl. Love can cause obsession because when a person is in love always thinking, imaging and dreaming with these person. The story show us the innocence of the first love and the author had an ephemeral love, he was remember to his first love with this story and his story is sad because he suffered for her. Thirdly, Joyce relates his first experience in loving. It was his first and bad experience in his life because he begin to act as a person that did not have basic principles as dignity or self-love. This story is an important anecdote in his life because with this experience he learn that first a person must have self-love and then he could be to love another person. When he went to bazaar in middle of darkness he discovered that he had committed a terrible error and it produced an immense sadness and pain in his heart. He had lived an adolescence that was very short because he become adults in an instant. Finally, Joyce relates an important story of his life because his life had a drastic changing. He knew the first love and he want to do anything for her. He began to develop new feelings in his life and it produced that he acted as an adult. He knew a new feeling in his life and for this reason he was shocked by the dazzling love. The transition that the author had appeared intermixed because he abandoned the familiar space and playing because he came out to experiment new things that appear in his life. He developed new feelings such as sad, joy, happiness, love, depression.

Romeo and Juliet scene III of the act V Interpretation essay Edwin Reyes y Tamia Yanez Yachay Tech University November 17, 2016
Theater creates a complete world for the audience. The viewer feels represented by the play. That is why theater can change people´s ways of seeing the world. William Shakespeare was an English poet that wrote many fantastic plays during his life. His most famous play is Romeo and Juliet. The story is about two lovers in Verona, they born in enemy families but against all the odds one day they fall in love. Their families will never accept their marriage. But Juliet creates an intricate plan to escape of her marriage for convenience and get marry with the man she loves. She writes a letter to Romeo explaining her plan and then drinks a potion that caused a deep dream simulating death. Romeo never received that letter, and in his painfully he went to the graveyard to fire his beloved. This scene represents how deep love can penetrate our hearts and transcend death, and it gives an important role to the unpredictable of destiny. We will interpret the scene III of the act V of this play. Love is one of the strongest feelings that humans have for that reason it can affect human’s decision. When Juliet finds his lover dead, she decided without hesitation follow him to heaven. She had the opportunity to continue her life and forget what had happened in that churchyard. And Friar Laurence offered his assistance “I’ll dispose of thee among a sisterhood of holy nuns” (Shakespeare, 1597, p.244). However, her decision was taken she could not imagine a life without Romeo. When one feeling is by far stronger that the others it could interfere with decisions. The brain prioritizes the feeling and all the decisions are made to protect it. The history is full of people who prioritize their feeling instead of what is socially correct. It's not wrong, in fact many of the most beautiful acts have been done out of love for example: Romeo went to his window to declare his love and Juliet pretended his death for that she do not be separated from his love. However, let our feelings flow is not always correct sometimes is better take a moment to breathe and
then decide because they taken their hastily feelings and it produced that they died. "Ah! Death, end of misfortune and beginning of happiness, be welcome. Do not be afraid to hurt me at this moment; do not prolong my life a second if you do not want my spirit to seek to find my loved one among those who lie there” (Shakespeare, 1597) with this phrase Juliet decide to commit suicide. In this part Shakespeare represent that love triumphs over death. Only six days are enough to create this love story. Only six days were enough to fall in love. Juliet was destined to get married to Paris, but she does not loved to Paris. The poison and dagger represents the arrival of death; however, the final kiss represented salvation and it was an opportunity to continue their love in heaven without earthly problems. Romeo and Juliet accept this future, and they welcome the grim reaper with happiness. “Life is what happens to us while we are making other plans.” Allen Saunders. Even if we spend one day, one week or one year planning what to do in a specific moment not everything will happen as planned. The nature of destiny is unpredictable and no one can control it. Juliet carefully thinks about a plan to escape from her marriage for convenience, but something unexpected happen the fray responsible for the letter cannot deliver it to Romeo. Romeo kills Paris, but for another game of destiny Juliet gets up a few moments later that he committed suicide. Fate finally reflect this nature at the final part of this play when Montague family and Capulet family decide to end their enmity in memory of his heirs. They have many ways to stop that enmity but the chosen was the lover’s tragedy. So, the tragedy that guides these young lovers is a current theme making us doubt about the freedom of our actions.
In conclusion, this scene represents transcendence and the things that destiny has prepared for the lovers. Although fate and the problems of our daily life can cloud the road, love can overcome all these problems. There is no reason to stop fighting for what
we feel. However, what we think first is not the best option all the times. Is a good idea to take a moment to analyze the situation and then make a decision. Destiny is unpredictable but make a plan can help us to deal with it. Is always a good idea to be prepared for possible situations.

Consequences of child maltreatment from parents to children Tamia Sisa Yanez Tamba Yachay Tech
Consequences of child maltreatment from parents to children Each day children die from child maltreatment and these children are younger than 3 years old. Child maltreatment is a problem that is present in all countries and consequences that produces the child maltreatment in the children affect to society because these children will be criminals in the future. Children are the future in all countries and it is necessary that they have dignified education. Also, Child maltreatment begin in house and the violence goes from generation to generation. Child maltreatment produce damages in children and it can affect to society. Around the world some children suffer violence into families and these children spread violence in society. In the words of Alicia Pekarsky (2014) in the article Overview of Child Maltreatment, she says: “Child maltreatment is behavior toward a child that is outside the norms of conduct and entails substantial risk of causing physical or emotional harm (para.1). Child maltreatment is the abuse that children have. Child maltreatment is an act of violence or negligence that have serious risk for children and society. Moreover, children can be victims of intrafamiliar or public maltreatment. There are various kinds of child maltreatment and these are: physic maltreatment, psychological maltreatment, child neglect and sexual abuse. The principal causes of child maltreatment are strict discipline because some parents use the violence as tool to punish or discipline to children. Parents are the principal actors of violence in house and children are who suffer of these violence. The violence do not help them to develop good values because children learn aggressive behavior during the first years of life. Parents are primarily responsible in education of his children for this reason they should be exemplary of no violence, respect, love, comprehension, tolerance and peace. Child maltreatment can produces some problems to society, children and our world because children are the future of this world. Child maltreatment can produce negative consequences in the future of children that can last all lifetime and consequently
it can bring bad behaviors and problems in children, because it leads to developing addictions, low self-esteem, depression and anxiety. Firstly, one consequence that child maltreatment produces in children is health problems to long term, illnesses can appear in the future when children become adult. Some children must go to hospital for causing of a severe maltreatment because parents used anything to hit to his children and these thing can be sticks, knives and work tools, these thing can produces tumors or serious internal damages that can causes the death of a children. As Child Welfare Information Gateway (2013) have noted in the book LongTerm Consequences of child Abuse and Neglect that: “the effects of abuse can be minor or exaggerated, an exaggerated effect can be broken bones, hemorrhage or even death and this consequences can be momentary but the consequences that have more effect in the life of a child is emotional pain that a child develop. Child maltreatment can have many consequences that can be affect the physical and mental health of a child. The results in the investigation of child maltreatment are that 28 percent of children had a chronic health condition (p. 3)”. Probably, child maltreatment is produced by people that has suffered a similar maltreatment in the past. Child maltreatment produces that children develop illnesses as cancer to causing of tumors that was produced in the past. According to World Health Organization (WHO) (2016) “child maltreatment causes suffering to children and families and can have long term consequences. Maltreatment causes stress that is Associated with disruption early brain development. Extreme stress can impair the development of the nervous and immune systems. (para. 9)”. Child maltreatment bring problems in the nervous system because maltreatment generates stress and the nervous system is altered. Consequently, the stress cause that increase blood pressure and the heart rate and then these produces a myocardial infarction or a stroke. But, there are more consequential diseases as encephalic trauma, malnutrition, low weight and size, vitamin deficiency, anemia, cardiovascular diseases. Also, the majority illnesses appears in the
future when children become adult but it is the parents´ fault. Also, children are denigrated because they were born with malformations or disabilities. Parents need to take awareness about this topic because children are a gift from God and a children must be treat with patience and tolerance. Secondly, Second consequence that child maltreatment produces in children are socialization problems because children are more susceptible to develop bad behavior that to society affect. Also, some children present behavior extreme because they develop aggression and violence to society, for this reason society pay the consequences of acts parents. As Kezelman (2016) have noted, “Isolation/social disconnection: cause lower levels of social support and an increased risk of living alone (para. 9)”. Children have fear to socialize with other people and they prefer to stay alone in desolate places, they prefer to separate from people. These children develop social phobia and fear to talk with other people. Many children that have a situation of maltreatment in a future they have disorders in the development of his adolescence because they live with a trauma because they believe all people are similar to people that mistreated them in his infancy. For this reason, many adolescence have problems to talk with his classmates in the school. But, many adolescence prefer to use violence when they feel that other person is trying to do damage and these is a bad effect to society because person that had been maltreatment in his infancy do not know about what is respect and dignity. As Child Welfare Information Gateway (2013) have noted in the book Long-Term Consequences of child Abuse and Neglect, “Several studies have documented the correlation between child abuse and future juvenile delinquency. Children who have experienced abuse are nine times more likely to become involved in criminal activities (Gold, Wolan Sullivan, & Lewis, 2011) (para. 23)” these children in the future can be criminals because they solve all problems with violence. Moreover, many children begin to use drugs to forget the pain of maltreatment
and it develop an addiction that cannot stop and these children in the future children become drug traffickers, rapists, offenders and it is a serious problem to society. Thirdly, third consequence that child maltreatment produces in children is psychological and emotional problems. It is a principal effect of maltreatment because it cause that a children develop low self-esteem, anxiety and depression. In the words of Patricelli (2005), “Victimized people commonly develop emotional or psychological problems secondary to their abuse, including anxiety disorders and various forms of depression. They may develop substance abuse disorders. If abuse has been very severe, the victim may be traumatized, and may develop a posttraumatic stress injury such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), or acute stress disorder (para.1)”. Many children are more susceptible to develop poor mental and they do not have probabilities to develop his skills and abilities. As Odhayani, et al (2013) have noted, “Adolescents who have experienced abuse might suffer from depression, anxiety, or social withdrawal. In addition, adolescents who live in violent situations tend to run away to what they perceive to be safer environments (para. 30)”. Children are more susceptible to develop psychological damages because the brain is who control our emotions and emotional maltreatment produces that the brain become more inactive. Many children commit suicide because they cannot all pain that have inside. In the article Optimism in Children Exposed to Child maltreatment by Beals (2010) says that the child maltreatment can have positive effects because these children obtain supporting by people that had similar experiences in the past and these people encourage them optimism, positivism and these people help to children to recuperate their self-esteem. Many people live similar situation of maltreat and in the future they are who create organizations to prevent and to help children that suffer child maltreatment. But, it is not true because these children lose confidence in people and they have fear to talk with
other people, children develop fear because his parents threaten them so that they do not count the environment in that they live. Also, it is true there are organizations that helping mistreated children but many children prefer do not talk with they. Moreover, children cannot overcome traumas of the past and it generates children have negative thoughts about the life, for this reason I think that child maltreatment have negative consequences. In conclusion, child maltreatment generates serious changes in the life of a children because these children develop bad behavior, low self-esteem, illnesses to long term, anxiety, and they can commit suicide. Also, child maltreatment generates disorders mental because of the stress that they suffer in his childhood. Moreover, a principal consequence of maltreatment in childhood is that it can be repeated from generation to generation because of parents of this children had suffered maltreatment in the past. Child maltreatment bring serious effects as social isolation, children prefer to stay along because they develop scare to feel similar environment of violence. Child maltreatment have social and personal effects but the most important effects is the economic effects because the cost of hospitals and medicines affects the economy of people. The society pay the consequences because these children are who develop aggressive behavior and it produces that children use the violence with other children. Child maltreatment produces another effects as malnutrition, many children develop dissociative personality and they can develop addictions to drugs or psychotropic substances. All children are susceptible to suffer maltreatment but parents should consider that children are the future of our countries and world.
