Winter Morejón Universidad Yachay Tech Imbabura, Ecuador

December 12, 2016

Dear Portfolio Reader:

My name is Winter Morejón. I really appreciate that you are going to read my English Language Portfolio. My Portfolio is a collection of the work accomplished this semester in my English class. This work is composed of three essays and my research project, which have helped me to improve my skills in English. It has given me many tools that will serve me throughout my university career and life. I am prepared to continue with my career in English and keep growing as an English speaker and writer. Since I was a teenager, English did not like English very much, and therefore I was not a good student in this subject. The last semester I got aware that I should strive more because I was soon to enter a career and I did not feel ready to receive all subjects in English. In the 4th semester, I was on level 5 of the English program. My teacher was Hamilton Quezada, and for my he was a cornerstone. I made a real effort to learn. He gave me the confidence to realize that I could really learn English and all this made it much easier, so I am very grateful with him. For example, he sent me a lot of “do’s” and one of those that I liked the most was the videos to improve the grammar. We had to see and present a summary for the class. In this 5th semester, I am at level 6 of English program. When it began, I felt a little nervous about whether I was able to take all my classes in English or not. My first

essay at this level of English was the response essay. In this essay, I improved the way to follow instructions. Another skill that I acquired was to cite correctly. Handling APA rules is very important for a scientific researcher. Therefore, it was of great help for my career. In the Interpretation Essay. I obtained teamwork skills because I really had to do my best effort. The grade was not only for me but also for the whole group, so I could not be the person that destroys the effort of others. It was a challenge to work in a group, but thanks to this experience, I learned what the best way to divide the work is and how to join the ideas in a compact assignment. Another thing that I understood is that I had many mistakes on grammar. My team allowed me to know which those mistakes were, and what the best way to solve them was. All this proved to be useful at the time of preparing my project in the field of Advanced Linear Algebra. For me, the most important assignment and the one I liked the most was the research paper. In this assignment, I put into practice all my knowledge acquired in the hours of classes and study. One things that I put in practice the APA style that for this assignment already had a better use. Another thing that I put into practice was good structuring an essay, spend doing tests the entire semester made me learn the best way to structure my writing. A new thing that I learned in this task was to do better transitions between paragraphs. It allowed me to realize that I have improved in grammar, however. I have a lot to learn because I have so many mistakes. In general, my larger learning was the organization of my time. These tasks demand great amount of time and the way in which organize will help a lot. Some of my strength were that I am always ready to learn, and I can follow the rules of the game. Personally, I think that I have many weaknesses in every aspect like grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary. All that only shows me that I am in a continue learning.

I hope that you really liked this introduction to my English Language Portfolio. I want you to like this. I hope that it will encourage you to go ahead and to forward all the effort that I have given in the English program. It is never too late to put all your effort.

Sincerely,

Winter Morejรณn.

Response to “The Ethics of Human Enhancement” article Winter Morejón Yachay Tech

My English Portfolio - Winter Morejón

Response to “The Ethics of Human Enhancement” article Freeman Dyson (1996) said, “The technologies that raise the fewest ethical problems are those that work on a human scale.” In the article, “The Ethics of Human Enhancement”, Andy Miah explains how scientific advances may give unfair advantages over others. Overall, I agree with Miah’s concerns. I think that people in the world do not know what the limit is regarding the use of enhancements. Technological advances allow the development of people and improve their life through accessories as modifications in biochemical, genetic, and physical levels. Humanity is now in a trans-human era where technology is important because it can be controlled by human interests with the aim of improving their lifestyle based on their needs. All those advances generate doubts in people who always look for development. As an example, a person who loses a limb can be helped with a prosthesis to improve his or her movement. Another way to improve a person's life quality can be through education or exercise, activities that are different and ethical in comparison with the use drugs or genetic modification. It makes a difference in which are the means used to improve their lives. In this way, it loses or gains ethical value according to the way in which they use the different things. Another reason is the individualistic thinking of the person in respect to being improved in order to have a better future or gain an advantage over other people. These improvements can come to harm the person in the long term as the use of drugs to the increase of physical force or stimulate creativity. It also plays an important role in the decision-making of governments for this way to develop policies of use to be proceedings to cover the social needs of a better way. According to all this, you can generate a loss of social conscience and of human identity because you play at being God. This is why it is necessary to know, what are the ethical limits of the improving

human at the global level? Investigating throughout the world and thus be able to manage strategies reasonable for the use of these technological improvements in humans. Nowadays, technology is an important part is an improvement and manipulation of the lifestyle. Miah (2016) said, “Humanity is entering a trans-human era, where biology is treated as something to be manipulated at will, depending on one’s lifestyle interests rather than health needs”. Biology plays an important role in it; it marks an inflection point of how biologic technology means an improvement in every aspect of life. In the case of the prosthesis, which helps to improve lifestyle or drugs which improve cerebral performance. However, this has ethics implications; for example, a prosthesis could mean an advantage for a person. In this way, it could create ethical problems because when technological advances get better and better to improve human lifestyle, this could become a disadvantage for others. A good example of this is the use of drugs to improve the physique performance of sportsmen because this makes them be an advantage above the others that made effort training every day. We can also talk about the called super soldiers that have an advantage above other armies thanks to improving genetics or having prosthesis as limbs. The different problems that are generated in society are true because if in society prosthesis is not available for everyone or for the people that need them, they could be used only for persons that look for their own good to have a better future. For example, Miah (2016) argues, “A further societal concern is that enhancements might undermine some essential quality of our human identity that we would rather preserve”. In this way, people are losing empathy for other people is what characterizes us as human and born individualism. However, this search for a better future can be a problem for health as it is shown in the article because the use of drugs or medicine can shorten life. Miah

(2016) comments “It's crucial to establish some general principles that govern the ethical conduct of human enhancement at all levels”. It is also important something mentioned about freedom of your body, but here, it is in risk an important factor: the government decisions and how we can use the technological advances to make them ethically correct to all society. I think that the objective of the article is to give a large idea of how the technological advances can be ethically incorrect when used in different ways because their limits are not marked or they are used in a correct way. Each one of the ways that the author uses to transmit her ideas is correct. The author does not focus only on to give reasons why it is ethically bad the use of technological advances, he also gives examples of good use of them and how they can become good for society. He always keeps the partiality of the topic and invites the readers to think and to create their own posture about this. The article is easy to understand because of the way that the author comments her ideas is simple. She structured the article in a way that the ideas are correctly supported and follow a logical sequence that technological advances can have big ethical complications because they break big paradigms. As a conclusion, I thought that it was a great article because that the idea of technological advances used to improve the lifestyle could come with big ethical problems. Now, this topic is new and the way it is applied is not always the best. That’s why it is necessary that the people know which are the limits of the improvements according to the ethics, and what are the disadvantages that can cause on the other people.

Interpretation of “The Persistence of Memory” by Salvador Dali Estefanía Benavides - Winter Morejón - Shary Mosquera - Emil Vega Yachay Tech

My English Portfolio - Winter Morejón

15

Interpretation of “The Persistence of Memory” by Salvador Dali Vincent Van Gogh once said, “Paintings have a life of their own that derives from the painter’s soul”. Painting is the art of the graphic representation using pigments and other substances. Painters design these works of art to convey their view about something or simply to express their deepest feelings. One of the most important painters around the world was Salvador Dalí. He was born on May 11, 1904 in Figueres, Catalonia, Spain. Dalí was among the most versatile artist of the twentieth century. He is remembered for his eccentric personality and his surrealistic technique. Salvador Dalí frequently described his paintings as “hand painted dream photographs¨. The Persistence of Memory, one of his most recognizable works, was based in time like theme, from the melting clocks to the decay implied by the swarming ants. Therefore, general interpretation is that the painting, which portrays many melting clocks, is a rejection of time as a firm and fatalist influence. The history behind the quality of Dalí’s paintings was born with the Surrealism in 1924. Surrealism is an artistic movement that emphasizes the unconscious. Surrealistic painters focus on a presentation of very deep reality created by the unconscious mind. For this reason, dreams are the main source of inspiration for this movement. Salvador Dalí joined to the Surrealism in 1929. He was one of the most well-known painters of this movement. In the article “15 Things You Did not Know About The Persistence Of Memory" there are many interesting facts about Dali and his painting. An interesting factor is that he had a great influence of the landscapes of his native Catalonia. In "The Persistence of Memory", the shadow of Mount Pani, where his family had a summerhouse, drapes the foreground. Another interesting fact of this painting is that some critics believe that the melting clocks in the piece have a relationship with Albert Einstein's theory of relativity. Dawn Ades said in her critique,

My English Portfolio - Winter Morejón

16

“the soft watches are an unconscious symbol of the relativity of space and time", but Dali said that his painting has not a relationship with this fact (Puchko, 2015). The artistic painting “The Persistence of Memory” has a very interesting color combination and many unreal things. The medium of this painting is oil in canvas. The measures are 9 1/2 x 13 inches, or 24.1 x 33 cm and it is on display at the Museum of Modern Art in New York (MoMA, 2016). The principal objects are melting clocks that are hanging on three different things. The first one is on the edge of a table. In addition, there is another clock on the table, which has many ants gathered in its center. The second thing is a dry branch where the clock looks like clothe on the clothesline. This branch grows from the table. The last one is like a bed sheet covering a fallen tree trunk with protruding branches that gives the appearance of a closed eye. In the bottom of the painting, there is a landscape. On the top there is a beautiful sunset that is a mixture between blue and orange. The second part is a very calm sea without waves that join with the sky. On the right, there is an orange and very dry crag. On the left, there is a big pool over the sand. The rest of the landscape is a desert. The color of the sand becomes darker until it reaches the inferior part of the painting. This change in color tone produces the idea that an object is casting shadow into the landscape. Note the big pool and the sea in a dessert, which support the idea that this painting is unreal. Likewise, the melting clocks and the branch grow from a table in a crag over the sand. Those things has no sense in the same painting. Furthermore, the Museum of Modern Art in New York has a description of the painting, which says, “Salvador Dalí frequently described his paintings as hand painted dream photographs” (MoMA, 2016). That description is very accurate because these things can only happen in dreams. This painting draws the attention of spectators who have felt passionate at first sight, and even more when they note the surrealism that it has. Furthermore, the

painting seems excellent because the contrast between strong and weak colors is magnificent. The most striking things are the three melting clocks like a symbol of the current time. In the article “The Persistence of Memory”, Sean Li (2010) says, “I see the painting as a play on time itself, the philosophical entity behind time, rather than its outer appearance.” Taking into account what Li said, we can say that the melted clocks represent the desire to stop the time and break schedules. Perhaps, the difference between these clocks is that one shows a past already worn, other show the present that is melting and the last one shows the future that is coming. We think that Dalí tried to photograph the dreams. His goal was to bring to light the strange visions that occur in his subconscious, and manifest each detail of his dreams. It is possible that the obsession with the passing of time and the space were the most used arguments by Dalí in this painting. In the same way, the sequence of melting clocks in a disjointed landscape is a depiction of a dream that Dali had experienced. “The Persistence of Memory” shows extremely detailed areas, as well as the use of light and perspective that gives us the three-dimensional and real aspect of the scene. One of the strangest things in the painting is an object located in the center. It has not a defined shape, but we dare to think that it is a representation of himself as a sleeping and dreaming being. In contrast with our interpretation, some art critics think that painting of Dalí shows human beings like slaves of time because it governs us. Daily actions of people are determined by the time that they have. Day to day, individuals maintain an incessant fight against the time, but it does not stop for any reason. “Persistence of Memory” is a painting that tries to make us to understand that “time is limitless, but our time is limited” (Chace, 2015). However, over the years people consider time like an absolute definer. Salvador Dalí realized it and for this reason, he drew melting clocks in order to express a new

My English Portfolio - Winter Morejón

18

idea about the time. The shape of these clocks express that time is not rigid. In other words, if we organize our time in a correct way, we can control it. It is as if Gold Meir said once “We must learn to govern the clock, not be governed by it”. On the other hand, some people think that the painting is quite visually disagreeable at the beginning. This is because the painting has unattractive colors and it looks like artwork very poor in details. However, Dalí used the range of brown colors to express sadness, desolation and frustration. The idea of the lack of details is wrong because the painting has small things that mean a lot, but they are not observed with the naked eye. Even this painting is the least surreal of the entire Dalí’s art collection. The landscape, which depict the shores of its native Catalonia, can be considered as beautiful. To sum up, Dalí aims to show some interpretations of an unreal world like a dream. He wants to fool the human eye through his paintings. “The Persistence of Memory” fulfills the purpose of most of works of Dalí: causing confusing in the spectators. This painting only can happen in a dream. The emotional interpretation that this painting produces is mainly about time, which is the only real thing in the world, and it can have a fatalistic influence. The painters show their feelings through their works and Dalí made a great work because he shared his deepest dreams and emotions with us.

Argumentative Essay from “Legalize It All” Imagine a world where all people walk in the street with effects of drugs like in this moment it is with the alcohol. Drugs had a bad impact in the society. For example, children that choose a bad life and accidents with effects of drugs or people with several problems with drugs. To decide “legalize it all” drugs is the wrong idea because the society will go to chaos. First, the number of accident or crime can increment in an exponential way. Baum, D. (2016, April) said, “Addiction is a hideous condition, but it’s rare. Most of what we hate and fear about drugs -the violence, the overdoses, and the criminalityderives from prohibition, not drugs.” The notion of drugs was not the problem with several crimes or accidents is a big mistake because all this types of crimes take force to the drugs. For example, there are many accidents with the drive with the drug’s effects or imagine that your daughter stays in a party with the drug’s effects and one boy sexual abuse. Those types of crimes can be happen. Second, the drugs are dangerous to health in a physical, emotional and mental way. People consumed all type of psychotropic substances with the excuse to feel better, but these drugs constitute a health problem like death or paranoia. For example, the crocodile is a drug that kill your cells and decompose your body. Finally, is true that like Baum, D. (2016, April) said “We have an opportunity to change course. Experiments in alternatives to harsh prohibition are already under way both in this country and abroad.” This reference to the problem about people consume drugs in United States. All people the world have this opportunity and it is correct to change course. The society of the United States in the street are happy and the accident maybe decay because this country have tools to resolve this kind of problem. However, apply this experiment in all world do not the better decision because other countries

have a different way to think and traditions. Another problem is that other countries do not have the same tools to combat the consequences to legalize drugs. In conclusion, legalizing drugs in all world can be a big problem for the life of people, security people. In this moment, other countries has several problem and the question is what happen with the thinking about drugs in other countries.

Ethics in Informatics Winter Morejรณn Yachay Tech

My English Portfolio - Winter Morejรณn

27

Abstract This research has as its background to analyze and understand the role that the ethics fulfill within the framework of computing. Ethics is a determining factor in all areas of life, it is for this reason that now that the computing is one of the biggest roles within human life is very important to know, analyze and understand, as it is, the behavior of ethics within this. The way in which the ethics operate in all fields is different; in order to be able to understand it within computing is necessary to know the boundaries that exist.

My English Portfolio - Winter Morejรณn

28

Ethics in Informatics Steven Levy said, “Computer technology is so built into our lives that it is part of the surround of every artist.” Computer technology was born around the Second World War with the English mathematician Alan Turing considered as the father of the computing and communications. Determining which the first computer is very difficult but among them, we have the Z1, the Colossus, the ABC and the ENIAC. Since the Second World War, there is a dispute as to what is the way of ethics to treat the information since the Second World War was stopped due to the fact that it was able to decrypt the information of the Nazis through the enigma machine. But was this ethical or not? Most people would agree that this was ethical. But what about the information of the Nazis? For that, ethics often determines the correct use of computing while respecting human rights. The behavior of ethics is rarely limited in the field of informatics because to know what the limitations are is difficult. It has always been a problem to determine the limits to know what is good ethically in computing or not. For example, in the video “The Ethical Dilemma of Self-Driving Cars” by Patrick Lin (2015). What happens if in these automated trucks must face a traffic accident? If was a person, would be considered a reaction but, what happens with the time of the programmer to do it? Would be a deliberate decision. (Ted-Ed, 2015). These type of examples make one think what are those limits, ethical and moral, from which the computer is governed. By this reason, I decided to perform a survey to thirty people of between twenty and fifty years who are students or professionals. In this survey, were questions such as: Do you think that ethics is important in computer science? To which twenty-two people answered that is essential part of this. Among other questions, was how do you believe

My English Portfolio - Winter Morejón

29

that ethics limit actions to persons engaged in computer science? Responses were that the seventeen people did not know how this can be limited to programmers, seven people responded that it's important because it avoids that they exist steals information, and six people who did not know if there is a correct way to limiting the use of the computer. Another question was, how do you think the ethics of the computer should act at the time of be scheduling a truck that it is driving alone? In addition, this reaction is efficient to a situation of accident. To the face is to the situation twenty-six people responded that not know that is it correct and the other four that it best would minimize damage. As surveys show the people in general, they do not know how to determine whether it can be considered ethical or no. This uncertainty generated much controversy that is good or bad. The best way to end the uncertainty is to analyze the behavior of individuals in computing. The behavior of the human being is determined by their environment and upbringing. In this way the influence on other areas of study such as medicine. For example, Miah, A. (2016, September 8) said, Humanity is entering a trans-human era, where biology is treated as something to be manipulated at will, depending on one’s lifestyle interests rather than health needs. Because of this, it was decided to interview on the use of the different technology devices to the Systems Engineer Elvis Moreira with questions about the importance of using technological gadgets in the life. He replied, "Is very important because as shown in the present technological gadgets created through computing help of great way to solve problems of the real life". Another question was, what do you think about how these technological gadgets created an advantage for certain people? The answer was, "that the technology is created to help even though I do not share that many times these devices are used in a bad way and this

My English Portfolio - Winter MorejĂłn

so warrant. For example systems, that used to bomb criminals through drones". This means that they are justified certain actions. Is it correct to justify the use of software to break certain ethical rules to achieve a goal by society? How hackers act to help the society? For example, the case of Julian Assange. This related to what happened on that Julian Assange is guilty of espionage and publication of secrets and crimes of people and important countries invading the privacy. In the survey previously mentioned, also was made questions such as what is justified what made Julian Assange in the case WikiLeaks? Twenty-three persons responded that grace to him was discovered this fraud already that had been able to discover another way and seven people said that it was bad because he also committed an offense. Another example of this is the crimes of espionage that committed by groups of people as anonymous which by this way we teach all over the world the bad things of the government which hide. The survey asked about opinions on the use of informatics this mere and someone said, "That is not correct justify this action is not correct but what another way the society can get to learn of these crimes". This can have social implications. That way all this works within the framework of the scientific and the social. At the time of a scientific research as they apply these standards and can evaluate these acts of ethical computing. For example, the advancement of technology at a scientific level. Miah, A. (2016, September 8) comments, “It's crucial to establish some general principles that govern the ethical conduct of human enhancement at all levels. For example, says that many times is "playing God" This saying that scientists through the technology they believe might be God and change things in life. All these mechanisms

My English Portfolio - Winter MorejĂłn

31

break the cycle of life and although it is considered that great way all this the policies that countries implement not many times are fulfilled. In the survey were asked if they were important policies that control the abuses of the use of the technology. All responded that they were in agreement with these implementations and an anonymous person commented "necessary these implementations as there is a large abuse of the Technology and Informatics. Which goes against the laws of nature but this may delay of several ways the advancement of society." The Engineer Elvis Moreira said about this, "I think that the ethical can delay the scientific advances since informatics is a fundamental piece, but it is necessary to establish a limit to be able to differentiate the way in which the person works. By this, the states establish rules that determine the use because of how to carry out the research not to infringe human rights." Then the municipalities as act. Government policies and institutions that allow that violate the computer privacy of a person. Whittaker, Z. (2012). The laws exceed ethical principles for this way to be able to access information from other people. For example in the article, “Yes, the FBI and CIA can read your email. Here's how. discusses how the agencies Americans like the CIA and FBI can access e-mails of persons without court orders. Said as to protect the safety of people and the country is necessary to revise the emails. In this article are presented reasons such as is need check e-mails for that have not possible attack or violation of the rights. It violates the right of privacy to an end better as stop potential threats global and thus discovers the implicated. The violating direct to privacy of individuals is a great crime that these people commit since first these agencies violate the privacy of the persons most times without having a justification that this person commits a threat. For this reason, the main

My English Portfolio - Winter MorejĂłn

32

problem is the justification for a violation of the integrity of the person by means information without any proof. Then the state can justify break rules and ethics behind the computer to carry out all activities of this type. The stay in the case as suspected terrorist’s acts so that you do not mind invade your privacy to find evidence that that person is a terrorist. They allege that a person because it is known from a criminal or perhaps encountered a person accused of terrorism, it is necessary to be investigated to carry out all kinds of research and invade your privacy regardless of the means to find out if is guilty. The engineer Elvis commented, "Governments break laws and use all type of software to find out personal data of other persons in an investigation virtually them hacking lives through the computing. However, when a person or group as anonymous performs these activities to publish the crimes of the state is bad. Where is the ethics of the State to determine these acts? As mentioned above this is just a way to justify that do not act in an ethical manner to achieve the objectives. The notions of the people are very different and it is necessary to know limitation, behavior, and benefits of computing if it is applied in an ethical manner. It is necessary to evaluate the behavior of the people in front of the ethical problems in the field of informatics. By passing laws that countries do not break justifying that make it so as to know crimes. If to carry out these acts, because punish persons as hackers who break and reveal crimes of the country. They would not be fighting crime, it can be seen as the ethics issue is a very controversial at the time of speaking of computing is already wrapped in all the areas of life and it is not easy to determine which is good. It is, therefore, necessary to be able to determine the correct behavior at the level of the computer as soon as possible. Do you think that it is necessary to perform all these actions as soon as possible? And, do as it should do?
