T he M a n B e h i nd Newby Nirmal Sethia’s connection with tea goes back as far as 1950s London, when a chance encounter led to his appointment as a 14-year old apprentice tea taster. By 16, he had started his own tea buying business in Calcutta, later buying a tea garden in Assam where he learnt every aspect of the craft. Many years later, his passion for quality provided the motivation to make Newby Teas the company the world’s most discerning hotels and restaurants would turn to for the very best teas, perfectly preserved … with every one bearing the Newby name still tasted and approved by the man himself. A company with purpose, a significant proportion of Newby Teas’ profits support the charitable works of the N. Sethia Foundation.

Newby Teas is part-owned by the N. Sethia Foundation, a UK-registered charity founded in 1995 which is heavily involved in projects including the support of education, medical research and disaster relief. The Chitra Sethia Centre for Robotics and Minimal Access Surgery at London’s University College Hospital, and the Chitra Sethia Autism Centre in Cambridge, benefit from the funding of the Foundation to continue their pioneering surgical, and diagnostic and support work, respectively. In addition to supporting a number of British medical charities, N. Sethia Foundation has contributed to international initiatives providing tsunami and earthquake relief, and hunger prevention projects.

T he Jou r ney of ou r Te a The tea leaves used by Newby are among the finest available. Only first and second-flush leaves, those picked in prime season when they are at their freshest, go into Newby products. Many companies continue to use the inferior and cheaper leaves of the later flushes in their teas. Just 5 % of the leaves grown worldwide are of a high enough standard for Newby’s consideration. Most of our black teas come from India, from areas such as Assam and Darjeeling, renowned for their quality. Our green teas and oolongs come mainly from China and Taiwan, and Newby’s popular English Breakfast blend contains some Kenyan tea. The Sri Lankan highlands contribute leaves for our Ceylon, while our Kan-Junga has its origins in the Himalayas. In addition to tea, the Newby range also includes several tisanes. These soothing infusions, in flavours such as Peppermint and Ginger & Lemon, have proven particularly popular in settings such as spas and health clubs.

W hy Newby? Quality First Our number one priority. Using just the leaves of a single estate means standards can vary from year to year. That’s why we select only the finest leaves from a variety of tea gardens, picked at just the right moment.

Total Quality Control Newby’s state-of-the-art factory in Kolkata, India consistently achieves an ‘A’ rating for food safety from BRC Global Standards, a leading quality certification program used in more than 120 countries.
