designer spotlight: Sarah Zel Chescoe How did the SZC brand get started? I launched my self-labelled Jewellery, Leather & Homewares Collection ‘Sarah Zel Chescoe’ four years ago. I was inspired to create a range of symbolic Silver Jewellery and a week later, found myself working with a Silversmith in Ubud to bring my designs to fruition. I then introduced Leather bags, clutches & accessories to my Collection and more recently Homewares. I have an extensive Art & Design background, with a Bachelor of Visual Arts with Honours and a Graduate Diploma of Education from Curtin University. I love creating and while continuing my Art Practice in Textiles, Wearable Art and Sculpture, I am also a Visual Arts Teacher and have been Director of Visual Arts at a private school for the past 12 years. What inspires you? I take inspiration from ancient, exotic and tribal cultures and have a fascination with sacred symbols, talismans, shrines and textiles of civilisations past. I am an avid traveller, cook, photographer and selfconfessed culture vulture: I love meandering through markets, galleries & museums and collecting interesting objects, art & artefacts. I delight in the aromas and colours of a spice market, the organic forms, hues and textures of nature and the patterns and designs found in architecture. What can we expect from SZC this year? Loads of new designs across the range including ‘Urban Nomad’ Bags in soft leather, animal print ‘Colloquial’ clutches and ‘Amazonia’ embossed leather wallets. A Bohemian-style collection entitled ‘Sea to Sky’ which as the name suggests conjures up shades of turquoise, teal and indigo. ‘Ode to Isis’ introduces an Egyptian influenced theme including exquisite Lapis Lazuli and silver rings while ‘Sacred Stories’ silver jewellery is inspired by ancient legends & mythology. What is your favourite part of the design process and why? I delight in the exhilaration of that ‘light-bulb’ moment when I am completely inspired and can only describe it as an inner knowing; where the design is exactly how I want it to be and what was once an idea evolves into something for the body or home! I enjoy all aspects of the creative process, especially selecting and acquiring interesting finds along my travels which may be incorporated into a piece or inspire a new design! designer spotlight: Botanica Naturalis How did you get started in your creative business? I started as a florist straight out of high school in 1995 and studied at the then Beaufort Floral Academy doing my five year apprenticeship by choosing to work under a mentor on the job. I then worked in London for a few years and returned full of inspiration. My first floral inspirers are my grandmothers who were both gardeners and taught me a lot of what I know about flowers. In 2005 I went back to study visual arts and installation and now include both in my own style of floristry. Working for myself as Botanica Naturalis I have the freedom to create and use all the materials that I love. What inspires you? I am inspired everyday by the smallest of things. Raindrops on leaves and piles of stacked sticks and am constantly distracted by the beauty around me - especially buying flowers. My floral rock stars are Grandaflora in Sydney, locally Wayne Stubbs and Deborah Hayes. My installation god is Andy Goldsworthy. I love the intricate details in all botanicals. I love texture and colour and my favourite materials are the simplistic sources of paper, bare sticks, feathers and moss. I love vessels of all types and am really inspired by ceramics. What is your favourite design at the moment? At the moment I am very fond of the 1940’s crescent bouquet. I love its vintage shape and detail. I am also having fun exploring different ways to suspend flowers in spherical armatures. What are 3 tips you could give to get flowers to last longer? The main tip I have is in the selection of blooms because if they are old when you purchase them it is hard to avoid them withering. Also if your florist asks if you would like water for the drive home~ say yes! Make sure that the vessel is clean first and change the vessel and water every two to three days. But my best tip is still half an aspirin~ it’s an oldie but a goodie. Flowers love it! www.facebook.com/BotanicaNaturalis 10

designer spotlight: Lollicakes What is a cake pop and what inspired you to start a cake pop business? A Cake Pop is a style of cake that is shaped like a lollipop. Little pieces of cake are rolled into a ball, stuck onto one end of a lollipop stick and dipped in gourmet chocolate, resulting in the perfect union between a crisp chocolate shell on the outside and a moist decadent cake on the inside. I was inspired to start a Cake Pop business when I saw the potential of it in Australia. It is very huge in the UK and the US but not as much in Australia. I saw a gap in a niche market, and combining my love for creating art and baking, I decided a Cake Pop business would be the perfect fit for the market and for myself. Which cake pops do you enjoy creating and why? I enjoy creating well known character cake pops such as minions, cookie monster and Disney characters, but I also enjoy simple elegant designs. I love creating characters as it gives me a chance to think outside the box and design my Cake Pops in such a unique way that really brings out the best creative side of me. What inspires your designs? I look at Pinterest a lot to get inspired, but I am also inspired by my own taste which is simple elegance. At the moment, I am very into rustic chic, vintage and geometric designs. I get inspiration from every where around me, shapes colours, repeating patterns all speak out to me whenever I see them. I then want to replicate what I can visualise onto my Cake Pops. What can we hope to see from Lollicakes in the next 12 months? I hope to see Lollicakes be taken to the next level very soon - that is either having my Cake Pops being sold at cafes in Perth or having my very own shopfront. I hope to also bring Lollicakes fully into the events industry - birthday parties, weddings and other special events where customised cake plays a large role. www.facebook.com/lollicakesperth www.lollicakes.com.au 14
designer spotlight: Luminessence Candles How did you get started in your creative business? Candles started after my husband had an accident which left him unable to work, which left me looking after him and a newborn bub, so I started with the idea to make some to help us get by, as I love candles, and the business has grown from there! Do you have any new products/scents for this market? We are hoping to have our new fragrance ready for Perth Upmarket, “Lotus Flower. Enjoy the peaceful aquatic floral scent of the lotus flower, combined with relaxing patchouli and spice.
What sets your candles/products apart for the rest? All our candles are made in beautiful Margaret River, and are manufactured with exceptionally high standards- we use the highest amount of fragrance for each candle and each candle is hand made with love. What is your favourite scent? It is really hard to choose as it depends on the weather as to what I enjoy. This week I am loving Rose + Geranium and I am enjoying burning our new scent Lotus Flower. www. luminessencecandles.com.au www.facebook.com/pages/LuminessenceCandles/464370176928409
