designer spotlight: Botanica Naturalis Our very own Perth Upmarket florist creates beautiful ‘one of a kind’ blooms for lucky local brides. With 17 years experience, Anna from Botanica Naturalis knows how to listen carefully to her couples and creates stunning arrangements that reflect their past, present and dreams for their big day. Generally Anna spends up to a year communicating with the bride and groom to ensure that she gets it ‘just right’. She carefully hand selects a colour palette and then chooses the flowers best suited for the occasion. After arranging them in glorious original styles, Anna delivers and sets them up ready for the big day. She quips that she ‘loves to hand the bouquet to the bride and see her face light up’. As her florist name suggests Anna’s style is characterised by gorgeous free form natural arrangements. She is meticulous with detail and likes to add finishing touches to reflect her chosen theme. These may include using vintage suitcases, wrapping lace around jars, crocheted bottle covers and origami wreaths. A basket of white thongs for the bride on the dance floor is Anna’s favourite detail. Holding a diploma in Visual Arts as well as Installation and Sculpture, Anna is one multi-talented lady. Her latest creative extravaganza involved hanging flowers from the ceiling surrounded by bicycle wheels in a local gallery. Botanica Naturalis will be holding a stall at Perth Upmarket March 9th 2014. Grab yourself a pretty posy! www.facebook.com/BotanicaNaturalis www.etsy.com/au/shop/BotanicaNaturalis

designer spotlight: Wicked Wix How did you come up with the name Wicked Wix? To be honest there’s not really a story behind the name – we simply got together and started throwing some ideas around. We agreed we liked the sound of Wicked Wix and just went with it. We added ”The Natural Candle Company” as an extension of our name a few years later as we felt it really tied in with what our business is about. What does a typical day at work involve for you? Typically our work revolves around production and packaging of our products. As any business operator would know we also spend a lot of time behind the scenes on the computer – emails, phone calls, facebook, instagram and general business takes up a great deal of time. At the end of the day the “”making”” of the candles is what we enjoy doing – the hands on bit is the fun part! All the rest is just necessary to keep us operational! Can you give us a little insight into your process? We start with the wax in its raw flake form. Basically the wax is heated and then fragrances are added before pouring into glassware. It sounds quite a simple process but there is actually a lot of testing that takes place before the production can take place, we need to ensure the candle has the correct wick size, that is burns evenly and overall has an amazing scent quality. Once the candles are poured they are left to set, environmental conditions such as heat and cold affect the candles greatly. Once set, the tops of the candles are gently heated for a lovely smooth finish. The candles are then left to cure, usually for around 7 to 10 days before they are ready to be sold. What materials do you use? Our basic ingredients are Soy Wax, Perfume Oils and Essential Oils. All of our wicks are cotton and our glassware comes in from various suppliers around the country. Is each new work pre-planned or created very intuitively? We spend a lot of time planning for the major events in the calendar year such as Mothers Day and Christmas as obviously these are our peak times. The fragrances we select takes a lot of planning – like perfume its very hard to chose fragrances that people are going to love! In saying that the fragrances do seem to follow different “”trends”” – a few years ago we would never have dreamt that a caramel scented candle would be one of our best sellers – Our Brown Sugar & Vanilla has become a classic! This year romantic florals are very much on trend, our Mothers Day candle will certainly reflect that. www.wickedwix.com.au www.facebook.com/WickedW
