I’m going to let you into a secret... I’m going to tell you the answer to the question you’re not meant to ask a woman... in a couple of weeks’ time, I will turn 40! Thankfully I don’t have anxieties about this imminent change of decade, but I have found myself pondering the manic pace of life. The weeks fly by. And not just the weeks, it’s April already - where did the first quarter of 2013 go?! And not just the months, I’m almost 40 where did the last 10 years go?! It’s easy to imagine that when I face my 70th birthday, I’ll be saying similar things and wondering where the years have gone. Life is just so full, time flies. Thankfully I absolutely love my job, but most weeks there’s not much time for anything other than work and everyday chores. Surely there’s more to life than work and this frantic busyness? There are many things which bring us satisfaction in life - family, friends, work, community involvement and so on. But I believe we find true satisfaction and meaning in life when we explore the spiritual part of who we are; when we take time to discover what we believe about our spirituality, and about God. So, I encourage us all to try and make time to look beyond the busyness of everyday and ask ourselves what we truly think life is about. Please call if you’d like a chat.

Wild About Perton in April Spring is very much with us now that the clocks have gone forward. Longer daylight hours provides the energy from sunlight to enable plants to grow and develop, and for the birds to find and feed their young. Early spring flowers such as the Lesser Celadine are showing their many petaled yellow heads in the damp shady areas and the dawn chorus builds to a crescendo of sound. Our birds begin singing at different times with the first song often the melodic and mellow toned Blackbird, joined by the Robin’s long rapid tick, ick, ick ick and the loud and proclaiming Song Thrush. But like some of us ,some birds are late risers; no self respecting warbler for instance, will be singing when Wild About Perton begins its early morning dawn chorus walk. April is also when Springwatch Festival comes to Perton Library to celebrate our wildlife and wild places. This year there is a new outdoor area, with displays and flights by birds of prey, and inside the Library; ferret racing, meet the hedgehog, healthy herbs and woodland crafts. Visitors can also explore the wildlife garden, make a seed-bomb, identify the magnificent mini-beasts found in Perton lakes and get up close and personal with bats, as well as find out more about our endangered bumblebees. There is always a lot to see and do for all the family at this free festival which runs from 10.30AM to 3.00PM on Saturday 20 April 2013. Wild About Perton leads a wildlife walk every first Saturday each month starting from Perton Library. Dawn Chorus walk begins at 4.15AM on Saturday 27 April.

Tips from Your Local PGA Pro At Perton Park Golf Club WHY TAKE GOLF LESSONS? Do they really help? Should I take golf lessons? Can’t I just improve watching golf instruction videos? Don’t I just need a new set of clubs? These are some of the most asked questions. Are you satisfied with your game?Golf lessons can be beneficial for most people but not everyone. To help decide if you should take lessons, first decide if you are happy with your game? You could be shooting scores in the mid 90’s but be perfectly happy or be shooting in the 70’s and feel you could be improving. The point is regardless of what you shoot on the golf course; if you are happy with your golf game, skip the lessons. Do you have time and are you willing to practice and be open minded?Do you have the time and inclination to practice and are you open-minded to try new things and trust the teacher’s instruction? If not, save your money and skip lessons. If you feel you can and will improve, then read on. Do golf lessons really help? How useful the lessons are depends largely on you. The lessons themselves are no more magical than a new set of clubs. It’s not the clubs; it’s how well you use them. Likewise, it’s not the lessons; it’s how long and well you practice what you are taught. Advice for new golfers The proper swing is easiest to learn when you have no bad habits to correct. If you are a beginner interested in learning to play golf, taking lessons at the start will allow you to learn the fundamentals and allow you game to develop quicker. Skipping lessons at this crucial stage could set you back in your development. To make lessons work The cornerstone to successful lessons is finding a skilled instructor (such as myself) and most importantly, you must have the desire and dedication to follow through with the swing change by practicing diligently. Your golf teacher provides the key to your improvement, you must make the change Your golf teacher can give you the key points to improve your swing. They will show you the proper technique to help you feel and visualise the correct positions and motion and give you routines to practice. You must be prepared that you will probably hit the ball poorly and become frustrated whilst learning the swing change. Your swing will want to go back to it ‘old habits’ every step of the way. Have fun while learning, set yourself reasonable expectations The key is to work with your instructor, vary your drills and make them fun. This shouldn’t feel like boot camp. Don’t set your expectations too high for your first swing change. Allow yourself time to improve. Once you see the first change start to take hold and your game improve you will get an enormous boost both mentally and emotionally. You will become a believer for life that golf lessons, given by a properly trained and skilled teacher (like myself) work. So give me a call 01902 380073 opt1/ jeremy@pertongolfclub.co.uk

A Word From Your MP I was extremely excited to hear, last month, about how Jaguar Land Rover is set to invest a further £150 million in its new Engine Manufacturing Centre, in the i54 Business Park, near Bilbrook. This project is particularly close to my heart, as I worked hard to ensure the success of the original bid and helped secure around £10 million worth of support for the JLR centre. This money comes on top of the existing £355 million that the company is already putting into the plant. The extra funding will create an extra 700 skilled jobs for people in the local area, bringing the total number of jobs to be supplied by the facility up to around 1400. The long lasting impact that such investment can have on an area cannot be overstated and I am delighted that it will be the people of South Staffordshire who will be benefitting from this decision. During the recent Business Questions in Parliament, I asked whether it would be possible to have a debate about building on the success of the automotive industry, which has contributed so much to the economy of both the West Midlands and the UK as a whole. In his response, the Leader of the House of Commons, Andrew Lansley, touched on the 10 percent increase in new car sales over the course of the earliest part of this year (in comparison with the previous year). He also praised Jaguar Land Rover’s huge success in international markets and exports, saying that the fact that this has been reflected through investment in a new engine plant is something that is greatly supported right across the House. Not only does this this announcement highlight the strong commitment that Jaguar Land Rover is making towards manufacturing in South Staffordshire but, as importantly, it helps place a spotlight on what the area has to offer business as a whole. This is something that will be further emphasised at the South Staffordshire District’s first major job fayre on April 26th in Perton. The fayre is being organised in partnership with local job centre plus offices, South Staffs Work Clubs and other work club networks in the West Midlands. It will be a wonderful opportunity for Perton residents to meet with a series of local businesses and discover the many employment opportunities available to them in South Staffordshire. I would encourage everyone to pop by and very much look forward to meeting some of you at the event. To contact me call 01902 701479 or 0207 219 7150
