Letter from Westminster – June 2016: On 23rd June the British people will decide whether Britain Remains or Leaves the European Union. The campaign has dominated the political scene for months, as this is an historic choice for our country. Even those wearied by the competing claims and counter-claims of each side should reflect that the referendum will be a positive day for our democracy, with the people rather than politicians having the final say on our future in Europe. I encourage all constituents over 18 on 23rd June to register to vote by the deadline of 7th June at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote. Whatever the outcome, a high turnout will settle our relationship with the EU for a generation or more. It is after all our children and grandchildren who will be most affected by this decision While many know how they will vote, as is evident from those public meetings I have attended so far, many others have yet to make up their mind about the EU referendum. I have been asked why I believe that the stronger, safer option for Britain and the Ludlow Constituency, is to remain within the European Union. So while some readers may have seen my thoughts on this topic before, given the significance of the vote later this month, I write again briefly with my reasons for supporting Remain. There are many elements of the European Union that can be improved, it is clearly not perfect. But the risks of leaving (both known and unknown) offer a far from perfect scenario for Britain’s future. In the end, my decision came down to a judgement call, based on my own experience. Last month, two Ludlow Constituency businesses were recognised with Queen’s Awards for Enterprise due to their thriving exports. Open access to the single market is vital to enable UK businesses to export, creating more jobs here in South Shropshire. Our economy and the jobs that go with it, depend on trade, and the EU is our largest trading partner. So we will need to negotiate access to the EU if we vote to Leave. There is no evidence that this will be on as good terms as we enjoy now. Indeed France and Germany have both indicated that it will not. A vote to Leave would be a leap into the dark, undermining jobs and job creators here in the Ludlow Constituency. As a Minister I have visited many countries meeting governments and companies around the world, in the Americas, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. There is a consistent clarity of message – they all want Britain to remain within the EU. They see Britain as the gateway to the single market, and invest here because of it. This creates jobs, and brings in revenue for the exchequer to pay for public services. As a Defence Minister I also have insight into the role the EU plays in our security. NATO remains the cornerstone of our defence. But the EU is increasingly important in complementing our security capabilities. Britain within the EU provides an effective buffer, with an enduring veto, against creation of an ‘EU Army’. Were we to leave, this would risk duplicating NATO structures, undermining its effectiveness, to the benefit of those who would do us harm. Shropshire’s rural economy is also deeply affected by the health of farming – 86% of the land area in the county supports agriculture. Leaving the EU would risk the future of farm subsidies and European export markets, potentially damaging this vital local industry. The National Farmers Union recently decided to support Remain, as did a clear majority of the farmers who attended the local branch NFU meeting I addressed in April. But this decision will be made by the British public and my vote will count the same as any other. I encourage all residents in the Ludlow Constituency to use their vote and have their say in this referendum. I have been clear to my constituents, including last month joining my predecessor as MP Matthew Green in making the case for Remain. I shall be taking part in more local debates this month, to convince constituents that Britain will be stronger, safer and better off if we vote to Remain on 23rd June.

Where are your savings and investments and how are they doing? We can’t predict the future but there is likely to be market uncertainty both here in the UK and in the wider world over the next few months. We have just seen Local Council Elections, Police Crime Commissioner Elections and Mayoral Elections in some parts of the Country and of course the European Referendum is on the 23 rd June. In November we will see the American Presidential Election with Hilary Clinton and Donald Trump the two main likely Candidates. If there is going to be uncertainty then the question then follows ‘what should I do with my savings and investments? ‘Should I leave them in the Bank or Building Society or should I consult an Independent Financial Adviser to get Independent Financial Advice? The Banks and Building Societies are in most cases providing poor returns on your investments with many accounts providing rates of return below the rate of inflation. The only guarantee they can give you is that your money will be worth less in real terms in twelve months’ time. An Independent Financial Adviser will search the whole market to find the most suitable investment for you and your family, given all of your circumstances. Most Independent Financial Advisers have years of experience and have built up a wealth of skills and knowledge to try and help you make the most of your savings and investments. FSC Investment Services Ltd have been based opposite the Molineux Stadium, in Waterloo Road since 1997 and have become a well-established, well known and well respected local Company. We have four Independent Advisers and hundreds of Clients, based in the Midlands and throughout the Country.
