Letter from Westminster – October 2016: Last week I met constituents from Shropshire MIND, which provides supports and services to those suffering with mental health conditions. This was a good chance to discuss their experience of service provision in the county, but also some of the wider problems that affect their daily lives. Mental health is now much more widely acknowledged than in previous generations. Progress has been made in reducing the stigma attached to mental health and other debilitating conditions of the brain, leading more people to seek the help they so need. Last month I undertook training to become a Dementia Friend, which was a great opportunity to learn more about how this disease affects peoples’ lives and how others in society can help to give greater consideration to those who suffer. I encourage constituents to consider becoming a Dementia Friend. It is estimated that at least one in four people will experience a mental health problem at some point in their life – so this is not a niche concern, nor confined to the elderly. One in ten children aged between five and sixteen have a mental health problem, and many continue into adulthood. It is vital we take mental health seriously, and provide the care people need to address underlying mental health issues. Just over 800,000 people accessed talking therapies in 2014/15, up from 700,000 in 2013/14, showing more people are coming forward to get the help they need. Your local GP is often the first point of call for those seeking help for a mental illness, but there are also some mental health services that will allow people to refer themselves. This commonly includes services for drug problems and alcohol problems, as well as some psychological therapies. The NHS Choices website has further information on how to access these services and also gives a good overview of different mental health conditions. The independent Mental Health Taskforce published its report, the Five Year Forward View for Mental Health, in February 2016. I am pleased the NHS and Government welcomed the report and the Department of Health is working on publishing a detailed and robust action plan for taking forward the Taskforce’s recommendations. In 2016, more is being invested in mental health. Spending on mental health has already increased to an estimated £11.7 billion in 2014/15, from £10.6 billion in 2009/10. Clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) are committed to increasing spending on mental health each year in line with the overall NHS funding allocations. For the first time ever, NHS England’s planning guidance for 2015/16 made the expectation clear that each CCG’s spend on mental health services in 2015/16 should increase in real terms, and grow by at least the same percentage as each CCG’s allocation increase. In January this year, the Government announced almost £1 billion of additional investment for mental health, which included £290 million of new investment over the next five years to provide perinatal mental healthcare; £247 million to invest in liaison mental health services in emergency departments; and over £400 million to enable round-the-clock treatment in communities as a safe and effective alternative to hospital. This is in addition to the £1.4 billion for children and young people and eating disorders. The Government has also invested £120million in the first ever waiting times standards for psychological therapies and early intervention in psychosis to ensure that more people have timely access to treatment. This action, taken cumulatively, shows continuing commitment to action on mental health. Though this is not within my Ministerial responsibilities within the Department of Health, I take a keen interest in this subject on behalf of residents in the Ludlow Constituency. I raised concerns as your local MP about continued provision of services in South Shropshire with the Interim Chief Executive of Shropshire CCG ahead of its board meeting last month to impress on him the need for continued access to mental health care for local residents.

The SME (Small to Medium size Enterprise) business sector is often seen as the nursery for the larger businesses of tomorrow. There’s no doubt that the people who take on the challenge of running their own businesses are brave, they must believe in themselves, they must have a solid business plan and a method to make the plan work. As a Financial Wealth Expert for over 35 years I have experienced seeing some clients make absolute fortunes from their little acorn becoming a mighty oak. When they do our services can help them to reduce the tax liabilities that undoubtedly become associated with running a successful and profitable business. What I’ve also come to learn is that companies and their chief executives and key personnel are often so busy becoming successful that they fail to look at the basic needs of themselves and more importantly their families. It is hard to argue against the fact that a managing director if pressed to replace themselves in their own company would struggle to find a single person who would work the hours they do, accept the remuneration that they do, have the depth of knowledge about the business that they do, have the understanding relationship with their Bank and Creditors that they do. In fact they would probably have to employ two or three people to cover all the things that they take for granted is part of their workload. The other aspect of this is that behind most business entrepreneurs there’s a partner at home sometimes with children and a mortgage that needs paying every month, school costs, food and all the other normal costs of living. In the unfortunate position of this entrepreneur loosing their life either due to accidents, terminal illnesses or indeed if they are prevented from working due to disability or long term illness, the business undoubtedly will suffer, but could it not also be argued that the partner and children and family of the entrepreneur will suffer a fate much worse. It’s sad but true in many cases the simple act of placing some life insurance cover or some other critical or terminal illness, income replacement insurance or indeed a cocktail of all of these, is the last thing on the mind of the entrepreneurial business owner, after all were all invincible aren’t we??? If it were to be pointed out that a large number of you currently reading this article would be putting yourself, your partner or your family into a worse financial position than a Local Public Transport bus driver would that shock you?? The reason I point this out is that Bus drivers (in the majority of cases) get 3 times their salary death in service life insurance, they get paid leave if their ill, they get a pension scheme and they can also select to have private medical insurance added to their package of employee benefits. So if you’re serious about your business, if you love your partner and your family don’t you think they at least deserve the security and peace of mind that is afforded to the families of a bus driver?
