PGA Golf Tips from Jeremy Nicholls at Ledene Golf Centre..... Varying your Pitch Shots A good way of saving shots around the greens is varying your pitch shots. If you are confronted with a hazard to go over you will need more loft in your hands eg a pitching wedge or sand wedge. If it’s a straight forward pitch up the green, a pitch and run is a safer option to use, especially if the green has undulations. 1. Using a 8 or 9 iron which is a straighter face club than your wedges adopt the method you would use on your putting stoke by keeping the wrists firmer and positioning the ball towards the back of your stance with the body leaning slightly towards the target, making sure the back swing is controlled by the shoulders and arms. 2. Try to visualise the shot where you want the ball to land, taking into account that the ball will run more with a pitch and run shot then when you’re playing a pitch shot with a more lofted club. 3. Finally always look to maintain your rhythm in your pitch shots do not get into the habit of swinging to far back then decelerate in the downswing thinking the ball only has a short distance to go, always try to maintain the same length of swing in the backswing and downswing enabling the club to flow at a good pace.
